MAJOR NETWORK ISSUE (17 Jan 2012)

All,

It seems that VM have some bad routing issues right now. Most people won't be able to get to some sites...

150 is engaged, so must be a serious one!

I assume this is affecting everyone (comments welcome)

Apparently (not sure where the quote is from, presumably their NOC)..

"Virgin seeing high temperature alarms in their Poplar site. Kit has been rebooted but only 3 of 4 elements have recovered. An engineer will be attending site to check out environmentals and to try to restore fully. Next update from Virgin should be at approx 18.30"

The concept of rebooting machines because your aircon wasn't working raised an eyebrow or three..

Calm down everyone.

It's just been announced that the outage is due to an electrician checking some building wiring in an apartment block in the South of England and accidentally uncovering the HQ of the national modem cloning network.

Police and tactical firearms experts along with two qualified technicians (not necessarily VM technicians) are attending the scene and normal service shall be resuming shortly.

Thank you for your patience.

Saw this on the virgin media forums:

  • F1861007 Intermittent Connection Issues F1861007 Intermittent Connection Issues
    on 17-01-2012 18:58

  • We're aware that some of our customers are experiencing intermittant broadband connection issues on our network currently.

Our network team are currently investigating this at the highest priority.

Broadcast TV remains unaffected, however TiVo and other interactive services may be intermittent.

As this is a general network issue you don't need to call us to report it, we're already working to restore your service.

We'll update this announcement when we have more news.

re: MAJOR NETWORK ISSUE (17 Jan 2012)

Good to see them make good use of Social media when there is a nationwide issue - not!.

Why is it so hard for them to put a message up saying they are working on the issue, they have just ignored everyone for the past 2 hours. Even if the Twitter and Facebook teams have gone home surely you have some sort of contingency (like a manager that can post) to get important messages out to customers.

EDIT: Seems they have finally posted something.

We're aware of a network issue that may be affecting some customers' broadband service. Investigations are underway and we're hoping for a resolution as soon as possible. Due to call volumes, if you're trying to report this issue, lines may be engaged.

Back here (just outside Guildford) in the last 5 minutes.

Same as others really, intermittent problems with different sites from about lunchtime then total Broadband and On Demand (TiVo) loss and a dead 150.

Still can't get over the fact that the only way to get decent info about what is going on in these circumstances is online, which of course you can't access!

will we all get some compensation for loss of service?

Only at Virgin's discretion may they compensate angry/irate/agitated customers. However remember you pay for an "up to" service and you don't pay for a Service Level Agreement, so technically they're not obliged to give you a single penny. :)

Sounds like their core network switches had a problem if it knocked out a lot of their internet and TV delivery. There will be an internal investigation no doubt, but don't expect the findings to be made public.

Or putting a mop into the bottom of the racks and soaking the cables...

No, only total loss of service for more that 24 hours. it's in the T&C's, no service provider can guarantee a faultless service.

that sounds like atlantic 252 when they switched over to the other transmitter at 7pm, it would go dead for a few seconds and they said it was the cleaner just plugging in the hoover :-)
