Want to buy a router to take over from my superhub
 

We currently have a superhub on the 100Mb plan and I'm looking at buying a third party router and then just using the superhub in modem mode. Does anyone have any suggestions for a gigabit ethernet router that will work with the superhub in modem mode at all?

It would be even better if the router supported DD-WRT as well.

Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

dlink dir655 is a gigabit variant of the dir615 but not sure if it supports ddwrt. Also the dir825.

The DIR-825 and WNDR3700 have both been extremely popular "high end" routers that run DD-WRT, though both are getting a bit dated. Either will readily hit over 200mbps on the wireless but not a whole lot more as it runs out of CPU at that point.

If you don't need 5ghz the ASUS RT-N16 is a gigabit N router that supports Tomato. It also sports 2 x USB ports and 3 external antenna.

An Ethernet only option is the MikroTik RouterBoard 450G @ £85 (http://linitx.com/product/12417). Currently doesn't support DD-WRT but the pre-installed RouterOS v5 is very feature rich (http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:TOC).

If you are after wireless support then the Buffalo products are worth looking at as many of them have a Buffalo branded DD-WRT pre-installed. The WZR-HP-G300NH gets a good review by PC Pro (http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/wifi-...-wzr-hp-g300nh) @ £70 (http://www.ebuyer.com/169005).

I have this and confirm its bloody amazing with Tomato USB/VPN installed. It was overspecced to let it handle a silly number of simultaneous connections compared to other routers (basically you can have a torrent with thousands of peers/seeds going at once and it wont care all the while running QOS and adblocking scripts). I'm pretty sure you can install DD-WRT on it too.

PC World (instore only) tend to have them for a bit cheaper than Amazon.

A cheaper option is MikroTik RouterBoard 750GL http://linitx.com/product/13148 which I'm currently using with no issues.

This also has 5 x gigabit ethernet ports but not quite as high specs as the one you linked to, still more that enough for running a home connection.

TP Link WR2843ND - not yet released but a beast! should be released this year sometime, hopefully early summer time.

Linksys E4200 v2 - if you can get hold of it :D

ASUS RT-N56U - decent

the tp link should be able to run dd wrt, not sure whether the linksys or asus, have a look via google

Thanks for pointing that out, I only started researching routers with gigabit interfaces yesterday. The 750GL is a better SOHO alternative to the 450G I suggested.

I'm looking for something to replace a PC Engines WRAP running m0n0wall. This is ok for 40Mb/s but would struggle when VM do their speed doubling thing. I have relented and am having a 30Mb/s XL connection installed on Thursday; our ADSL2+ connection is only good for 3Mb/s.

The TP-Link TL-WR1043ND is proving popular. It lacks some of the performance/features of the newer TP Link hardware. It also loses out to other high end routers in this regard, but it is priced at less than £50, offering a price/performance ratio that is pretty hard to beat. The DD-WRT website suggests that it is supported.

Speaking personally, I am keeping an eye on the Asus RT-N66U. It is as yet unreleased in this country, and it seems to be suffering with some fairly serious firmware bugs at the moment. The hardware looks to be pretty impressive, and earns badgerpoints by having external antennae. I would imagine that third party firmware support is pretty likely in the future. It might prove to be a very decent router when all the bugs have been squashed.

I am linksys all the way and I believe nearly all the current models support dd wrt

heard the e4200 v2 does not support dd wrt different chip.the e4200 v1 does support dd wrt as i was runing it on mine.
