Every single cabinet in the country has either been refurbished or replaced and we are talking about over 11000.

Can't remember mine being refurbished or replaced, in fact half of them have been cleared out and empty for about 6 months i have noticed.

Wish they would come & replace ours , it is full of rust & holes at the bottom.

Doors held together with sticky tape. Doors bent and hanging off. Some others with no doors at all. They can start here any time they like !

sooner this is completed the better.

@ Digital Fanatic - when did the upgrades begin so we know a rough completion date?

The work is not just cosmetic either, we are adding capacity to the network for future expansion and new services.

does the mean we are getting the faster upload soon ???

Uddingston is amplifier limited so they might be replacing those 30MHz return path amps as they are upgrading the cabinets, would make sense to. :)

Actually that it makes sense probably excludes it, never mind :p:

that indicates modulation, showing your upstream has fallen back to QPSK, which suggests there is noise on the network, nothing to with 2.6mb upload speed

In my road, and the adjacent roads, only one cabinet has been replaced and that was because it was badly damaged. None of the others have had any upgrade work done in recent years including the cabinet 2 streets away that has had the door missing for over 2 years!!! I was speaking to a VM technician a few weeks ago whilst he was working on the cabinet opposite my house, he was only there to cut off a subscriber!

Incidentally we still have the old flimsy grey Andover Cablevision cabinets installed over 20 years ago!!!

No it indicates a DOCSIS 1.1 TDMA upstream rather than a DOCSIS 2 ATDMA upstream. An upstream that has fallen back to QPSK shows as 10240kbits/s ATDMA.

why is a 50mbit user on a docsis 1.1 upstream?

EDIT: of course, non upgraded upstream area, doh!

Correct.

Locked TDMA 3 10240 Kbits/sec 25800000 Hz 33.5 dBmV

I prefer to think of them less as 'non-upgraded' and more as 'non-standard'. It's not an upgrade when it's the standard performance for the service.

If the pit cover in front of the box says CATV it is a VM Box.

It looks like one - and pretty well dog-peed on too..

Think we have the definative answer now with the forthcoming speed upgrades:
(From VM's community forum announcement on the upgrade)

"Why do I have to wait for my Speed Boost?

Over the next 18 months we're going to be upgrading over four million customers. Doubling everyone’s speed is a pretty big job so it can’t happen overnight. Our engineers will be working as fast as they can to upgrade 38,000 street cabinets and 186,000km of cable (enough to go around the equator four times).... "

Note: cable not fibre.

Nothing sinister about that and it goes hand in hand with the refurbishment of street cabinets, remembering that 5 out of 6 (circa) are cable not fibre.

There will obviously be replacement of tired lasers (curing SNR issues) and additional fibre added where necessary for more channel capacity.

It's a matter of survival IMO for VM ( a bit dramatically put) because BT Infinity will be present at more than 75% of the UK.

from what I've seen so far cab upgrades have started way up north so is this going to gradually come southbound or is it picked mains then to areas ?

I'd say the 100 meg roll-out plan is an indicator of when the street cab crew are coming.

this is all very delightful, but ARE THEY GOING TO UPGRADE THEIR GODDAMN OVERCROWDED CMTS's, so that they can deliver a service that is fit for purpose at the times of day when people are actually able to use them??

How do you know it hasn't been overhauled? Some cabs only require a few hours to make changes inside, others may take a little longer.

thenry 12-01-2012 16:49

Re: virgin media are replacing all the green boxes in my area

is there downtime involved in this?

Peter_ 12-01-2012 19:17

Re: virgin media are replacing all the green boxes in my area

The average downtime is around 4 hours but it can be offline from 8am to 6pm.

Sephiroth 12-01-2012 19:18

Re: virgin media are replacing all the green boxes in my area

They don't have to be overhauled if they're performing OK

thenry 12-01-2012 19:20

Re: virgin media are replacing all the green boxes in my area

I'm guessing customers get warned before hand ?

is the cab upgrades part of this speed upgrade or separate, can it function properly without the cabs being upgrades or will each area get upgraded cabs before the speed goes through?

Sephiroth 12-01-2012 19:47

Re: virgin media are replacing all the green boxes in my area

The cabs (apart from optical nodes) house amplifiers. These amplifiers are hooked up to the 48 or 16 (according to cab size) local users and the next cab further away from the optical node. Some of these amps are 15 or more years old and are thus potentially phutted.

The cabhave to be done in daylight and I've never seen VM give a warning.

The optical nodes may need more node devices fitted, more fibre pulled and tired lasers renewed. They deduce this from the SNR stats they collect.

The CMTSs at the VM end need the new higher capacity line cards and in some areas, new CMTSs have to be added to handle load.

Can 100 meg function without the cab upgrade? Badly, IMO, where a cab upgrade is needed. But prolly the optical node is more critical to 100 meg than the coax street cab.

Hope that explains more. Igni can amplify or correct anything I'bve not got right.

They are getting whatever work is required, be it a full replacement, tidy up or refurb, but each and everyone of the 11000+ cabinets is having some form of upgrade work done them, it is on our intranet and they proudly like to keep us updated as to the progress of the work with photographs showing before and after.

The same intranet that tells you to use Internet Explorer as a speed test then can't tell the difference between megabits and megabytes per second?

Yeah I'll take that with a pinch of salt, thanks. Especially since everything interesting or useful is never dissemminated, I'd rather take Seph's word over someone who's demonstrated complete incompetance at understanding technological concepts.

So someone who is not employed by Virgin Media and does not have access to our intranet can know more about the upgrading of our 11000+ cabinets, now even for you that is stretching your imagination a bit far, maybe he is really one of the management in your imagination.

You're adhering to the misguided belief that your intranet is always right, even when in clear defiance of logic. I'm merely stating your intranet has been proven to be wrong in the past. You also keep changing sides in clear defiance of logic just to suit yourself.

Nobody's disagreeing that cabinets that need work done will get work done. On the other hand you seem to be the only one who thinks VM are in a position where they can waste money getting people to go round and dust off some cables in thousands of cabinets that are working perfectly fine just because there's pictures of shiny things on the intranet.

As every single cabinet in the country is down for remedial work in some way or another be it a general tidy up or even a complete replacement then how can you even think to state that I am incorrect, would Virgin Media customers accept anything less than the programme of work being taken out, and you then state that a person who does not work for the company is correct in any shape or form over this work and you would take notice of them instead, now that is exceptionally odd.

The facts still stand that work is being done on every single one of the 11000+ cabinets in the country regardless of anyone thinking the is nothing wrong with their particular one because their connection is running fine.

If anyone has an issue with another member then you have three choices.

1# Report the members posts if they are breaking our T&Cs
2# Put the person on ignore
3# Leave the thread

Continuing the argument abusively within a post (whether you include technical information or not) will never be acceptable especially after a warning.

Any more off topic content will invite infractions as there have been enough warnings in this and another thread already.

what i really meant to say was i have had no downtime and tbh my cab is quite an old looking cab and is rusty in parts.. :erm::erm:

and i would have thought it would be repaired or replaced @ some point....but it aint happened yet

Even though my name's been mentioned in all the foregoing frolick, I've kept away, obviously.

I do look to the likes of Masque to provide solid framework information, such as the fact that ALL of the VM street cabinets are having remedial work performed.

The difference between a VM employee and myself is that I can speculate on the detail of the type of work that might be carried out according to need at each cabinet, including the optical node. It is rare for VM or its employees on the forum to go into such detail for reasons of perceived sensitivity.

I may well be picked up on the use of the word "speculate", for that is all that an outsider can do piecing together his/her technical knowledge of the subject.

But I think the mix of insider and technically competent outsider works well in the forums, especially the VM Community Forum where I have some technical material stickied.

Whats your intranet say about my cabinet?

still awaiting its upgrade.

Re: virgin media are replacing all the green boxes in my area

via the speed upgrade site...

Hi, I'm Richard Branson < HELLO SIR :)

Quote:

I'll be doubling speeds for over 4 million Virgin Media customers over the next 18 months. Good job I've got my best engineers on the case.

They're taking a region at a time and before long, Virgin Broadband customers will be enjoying double speeds. Once the job's completed, a total of 186,000km of cable and 38,000 street cabinets will have been upgraded.
i guess its now safe to say cabs will be upgraded before speed goes through ?

Did that 11,000+ figure come from the intranet? The PR blurb suggests over 38,000 and while that's certainly 11,000+ it's a pretty big +.

As they are on the intranet then no as they would be classed as business sensitive.

You may get an idea of what is being done from this Google link

Not from the intranet sorry only the ones in that link but you can see the few really neat ones compared to the tatty ones.

The cabinet replacement isn't related to the upstream uplift directly. You aren't going to be upgraded the moment the cabinets are worked on.

While I don't go through a cabinet, it's all in underground pits, they did the work on my area on 23rd August and I still don't have the upgrade.

No. If I were in Uddingston I wouldn't be commenting I'd instead be waiting, per the published schedule and the information from VM staffers, for February to roll around.

ive not heard/read of many posts stating cabs have been worked on. is this plan still active and is the delay to various areas due to upgrades needed to a vast amount of cabinets?

Actually that it makes sense probably excludes it, never mind :p:

Howdy I joined 2 weeks ago had an engineer visit to replace cable from cab to house, he told me that all the amplifiers in my area (Croftfoot) needed replaced but they weren't doing it til after the olympics. Maybe that explains the crappy speeds I'm getting.

Thought the plan was to do this as part of the speed upgrade programme. Doesn't seem to be the case. Nothing changed in this area. Still doors held shut with insulating tape.
