Jamie McDonnell has linked up with new trainer Kevin Sanders as he builds toward a bantamweight world title shot in 2012.

McDonnell is edging closer to a fight against the division's top names after his September win over Stuart Hall secured the European, British and Commonwealth titles.

And the Doncaster man has now brought Sanders into his corner ahead of his European title defence against Malik Bouziane on 18 February

Top Ten Fights To Look Out For in 2012 (Part 1)

Quote:

Ahead of the first fights of the New Year, BoxingFancast runs through its wish list of fights for 2012 and the chances of each big bout coming to fruition. (Part 1 of 2).

10) Tyson Fury Vs David Price

For better or worse, Tyson Fury is fast becoming the general public’s blue eyed boy of boxing after a three fight showing on Channel 5 that has really improved the profile of the Manchester born heavyweight.

With promoter Mick Hennessy openly talking about a tilt at a world title in the next 18 months, the onus on Fury is to improve his physical conditioning and display evidence that his chin could stand up to jabs of the classier men in the division.

A fight against former Olympic bronze medalist, David Price, could be just the ticket for Fury to tick both those boxes. Price is fitter than his flamboyant rival and has shown no little power in cruising through 11 professional assignments to date. A win over old Fury foe, John McDermott should be a formality before the big domestic clash is delivered in May or June.

Likelihood rating: 8/10

9) George Groves Vs Sakio Bika

How do you solve a problem like George Groves? Since providing one of the shocks of 2011 in defeating James DeGale, Groves sat on his hands a little, allowing his former amateur rival a first shot at a European title before “Saint” George returned to the ring to dispatch Paul Smith inside two rounds at Wembley Arena in November.

Make no bones about it, the unblemished record of the two time ABA champion is something that DeGale would happily swap his European title for, however, he needs to kick on in 2012 to establish himself amongst the next wave of world class super middleweights on the horizon.

To that end, you could select any number of second tier operators in this divison for Groves to engage this year. Super Six whipping boy, Allan Green, might be a safe option else a meeting with former IBO champion Sakio Bika, may be an interesting assignment.

At 23, however, there is no rush for Groves. He will want to avoid facing a DeGale rematch this year, and despite pressure from new promoter Frank Warren, I would back him being able to delay a return fight until 2013.

Likelihood rating: 5/10

8 ) Manny Pacquiao Vs Juan Manuel Marquez

In any other year, this fight would be an absolute certainty. Juan Manuel Marquez has entered the ring on three previous occasions with the eight weight world champion only to feel let down by poor judging on each occasion. His complaints have a varying level of merit depending on the fight, however his November 2o11 meeting with the Filipino certainly had the feeling of an incredibly poor decision.

Pacquiao has taken a lot on in the last two years, both in and out of the ring, and for my money 2012 could be the final full year of his career. With political obligations pulling him one way and the constant battle to secure a meeting with Floyd Mayweather Jr dragging him in another, it may not be to much of stretch to suggest that Marquez could be the one to lose out.

The only saving grace for the Mexican could be Mayweather’s upcoming 90 day prison term that looks set to scupper hopes of a 5 May date for Pacquiao.

Likelihood rating: 5/10

7) Martin Murray Vs Darren Barker

With toppling Felix Sturm at home proving impossible for both Martin Murray and Matthew Macklin during 2010, there may well be clamour early in the New Year for a domestic middleweight elimination mega fight. Murray, who remains undefeated after his draw with Sturm in December, and Darren Barker, a man defeated for the first time by Sergio Martinez in October, will be looking to regain confidence ahead of further world title attempts ahead.

Murray may be more likely to secure rematch with the slippery Sturm, however with Macklin looking at a St Patrick’s Day showdown with Martinez, both men may look to wait for the outcome of that before making their next move.

Likelihood rating; 4/10

6) James DeGale Vs Andre Dirrell

Andre Dirrell formed part of the George Groves training camp in the run up to his meeting with DeGale last spring and as the American looks to reboot his own career after nearly two years out of the ring, who better to face than the current European champion?

DeGale has made no secret of his desire to make 2012 the year of his first world title and in a highly compact super-middleweight division, the former Olympic gold medalist must start the year with a bang and a big name target if his prophecy surrounding world glory is to come true.

For the American, however, a fight of this nature may come too soon into his comeback- defeat may leave the former Super Six contender with few options.

Likelihood rating: 5/10

http://www.opposingviews.com/i/sport...-khan-and-more

Ahead of the first fights of the New Year, BoxingFancast runs through its wish list of fights for 2012 and the chances of each big bout coming to fruition. (Part 2 of 2).

Quote:

5) David Haye Vs Vitali Klitschko

Say what you will about David Haye in the wake of his disappointing defeat to Wladimir Klitschko last July, but the brash Brit remains the most marketable prospect in the heavyweight division and a cash cow that the other Klitschko brother, Vitali, will want to take full advantage of.

As with Haye’s fight with Wladimir last year, Britain’s Dereck Chisora stands in the way of an immediate deal being struck, however Vitali will see that as no more than a warm up before the final major fight of his career. At 40, Haye will back his chances of toppling the elder Klitschko despite being out of the ring for a year by the time the first bell rings.

Likelihood rating; 8/10

4) Carl Froch Vs Mikkel Kessler

After two and a half years of must win bouts, Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch may find themselves in another one before the end of 2012. Froch must prove that his defeat to Andre Ward is not symptomatic of a decline at the highest level and Kessler needs to demonstrate that he is fully healed from the career threatening eye injury that scuppered his participation in the latter stages of the Super Six.

A UK based rematch of their 2010 slugfest would appear the most logical step although Froch’s frosty relationship with the Sauerland promotional team that controls the Danish former champion could put a spanner in the works.

Likelihood rating: 7/10

3) Andre Ward Vs Lucian Bute

Arguably the most unlikely fight on this list. Not because either man does not want the fight- two unbeaten world champions facing off is always attractive- but arguments on location could be a sticking point with both men loathe to fight away from home.

Ward has the WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine belts at this weight and may feel that he doesn’t need Bute’s IBF strap to validate his claim as top dog in the super middleweight division. If the fight is to be made, I would wager a Vegas showdown towards the back end of the year after each man has secured one further defence each.

Likelihood rating; 5/10

2) Amir Khan Vs Lamont Peterson

A fight certain to be made in 2012, all that remains to be resolved is whether Lamont Peterson enters the ring as unified light-welterweight champion of the world or if Khan’s controversial defeat in Washington during December will be overturned.

Either way, Khan will come at this rematch with much to prove. A second defeat in just over three years is not in the least bit terminal for his long term prospects, however, should the British fighter want a superfight against Floyd Mayweather in the next 18 months, he will need to beat Peterson handily. The concern for domestic fans will be that this fight may scupper hopes of a Khan meeting with undefeated Kell Brook in 2012. However, should both men avoid defeat before the autumn I would suggest a fight between the pair could be made in November or December.

Likelihood rating: 10/10

1) Manny Pacquiao Vs Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I came pretty close to leaving this fight off the 2012 list because, ultimately, what else is there to say? For the best part of three years, this has been the fight sports fans the world over have wanted to see yet all have been left disappointed. I had hoped to see this in early 2010, however Pacquiao elected to chase titles and money in a nonsense fight against Joshua Clottey and Mayweather made his annual appearance against a shopworn Sugar Shane Mosley.

The concern for both men as we enter 2012 is that, in a similar scenario facing Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson before their match up ten years ago, that time has moved on too long to benefit either man’s resume. In Pacquiao’s case, any win over Mayweather would be monumental, but for the American, with his Filipino rival showing slight signs of decline, boxing historians may bemoan a reluctance to make this match up two years ago.

Mayweather now appears more keen than ever to sign on the dotted line, however with an impending 90 day prison sentence, the chances of the fight happening before the summer are next to nil.

If the fight is to happen and remain relevant, 2012 will have to be the year. Even with the complications provided by Mayweather’s legal problems and drug test demands, there exists enough hope that all relevant sides finally want this fight to happen.

Likelihood rating: 6/10

What are your views about these potential fights and who do you think will be the big stars of 2012.

Amir Khan has accused an unidentified man of "interfering" with officials and the judges' scorecards during his defeat by Lamont Peterson.

Khan made the claims through Twitter by posting a number of images from last month's fight in Washington.

The Bolton fighter said the pictures highlighted his concerns about the appearance of a man at ringside.

Khan, 25, claimed the man talked to WBA supervisor Michael Welsh and interfered with the judges' scorecards.
Quote:

Among a string of tweets, Khan alleges that the unidentified man started to "interfere" with Welsh in round six and continued to do so until the end of the fight.

He also claims that the man talked to Welsh and handled the scorecards, which were handed to Welsh at the end of each round, and that Welsh admitted after the fight that his scorecards did not match the others.
Quote:

Khan's trainer Freddie Roach told BBC Sport he believes his charge "got screwed".

Roach said he wanted to see Cooper suspended from officiating future world title fights and that "the fight should 100% be looked into".

"I have no knowledge of any wrong-doing but it was unusual how long it took [for the scorecards to be tallied]," said Roach, Khan's trainer since 2008.

"Wrong-doing in boxing is always hard to prove but we got screwed in that fight. I hope something is done about it.

World Boxing Association president Gilberto Mendoza has called for a rematch of the bout between Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson.

Khan lost his WBA and IBF titles to Peterson in Washington DC in December but has questioned a number of aspects of the fight, including an unknown man seen talking to the judges.

"It generates a lot of controversy. There should be a rematch," said Mendoza.
Quote:

The Bolton fighter claimed the man talked to WBA supervisor Michael Welsh and also celebrated with Peterson after his win.

However, when contacted by BBC Sport, Welsh refused to answer any questions about the mystery man or what was said.

Mendoza added that the man claimed to be an IBF official but his true identity is not known to the WBA, and that Welsh was ignored when he raised concerns about the man at ringside.

"Welsh was concerned about the gentleman being around him and couldn't get the coordination to do his job properly during the fight," said Mendoza. "He said he was totally ignored by the commission in Washington."

Khan's business manager, Asif Vali, said that they had written to the boxing authorities for explanations to several areas of concern.
Quote:

"These are legitimate questions and if they give us sufficient reasons for it then I'll accept it. I want to see what the reasons are.

"We're not saying there is foul play involved in any way, shape or form. I just need the answers for the sequence of events that have taken place. Nothing else.

Re: Boxing 2012

the Khan thing looks too dodgy and is literally the icing on the cake. the ref himself was a complete plonker during the fight, it was written in the opening rounds with him getting in the way. I've only watched boxing for the past 10 years, albeit big fights but in that time I've never seen a ref so clumsy in the ring.. why he was ref is beyond me, there a few high profile refs that do a solid job.

Peterson kept his head down as a tactic but I'm sure before fights the refs say keeps your heads up, protect yourselves at all times etc. was that tactic against the rules?

anyway, its amazing to see that footage again with Khans old man and 'manager' or whoever he is behind not in the slightest bit concerned.. i know the fight was main attraction but surely an eye on the judges.

it was a great fight to watch though ignoring the negatives, both showing great stamina.

One claim is that an unknown man, who has now apparently been identified, was seen "interfering with" a WBA official.

"The WBA... will order an immediate rematch," said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.

"We received a verbal confirmation today [Saturday] and we will get a written confirmation by next Tuesday.

"That means that no fighter can take an interim fight, that the next fight for Peterson would be a rematch.

"We hope that the IBF will follow because that's the least they can do. The ruling of the WBA to order an immediate rematch should put additional pressures on the IBF."

This is another reason why the fight was dodgy as hell.

Peterson was warned numerous times in the fight to keep his head up. At one point the ref told his corner he'd deduct a point if he carried on. Yet he was then warned twice more for the same thing in the very same round with no points deduction, and in several other rounds afterwards.

That Khan had 2 points deducted for fouls that aren't even fouls in the laws of the sport, and Peterson failed to receive one despite constant warnings for something that is, shows how dodgy it was.

When I first watched the fight I thought Khan threw it away (although you can still say he did), but watching it back now it's clear that it wasn't in any way a fair fight.

I don't even like Khan, he's one of the most arrogant boxers around, for no real reason, I loved watching him throw his titles away, yet I think he got screwed.

Manny Pacquiao has paved the way for the world's first-ever $100million super-fight with Floyd Mayweather after declaring 'this is the fight the world wants'.

The Philippine superstar was responding after unbeaten American Mayweather called Pacquiao and demanded the pair finally collide on May 5.

However Pacquiao admitted he wants the bout to be stagedd later on in May and raised doubt as to whether Mayweather could guarantee his side of the lucrative purse

'This is the fight the world wants,' said Pacquiao.

'Mayweather wants a guaranteed purse so what he has to do is get a promoter who can give him the guarantee.

'I don’t have problems getting a guarantee because I have a promoter who will give me my guaranteed purse.

'If he gets a guarantee, then we are going to share the revenue on a 50-50 basis.'

And Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum added: 'There is no problem on our part - the problem is on Mayweather’s.

'Mayweather needs somebody on his side that’s going to guarantee his purse. 'Mayweather has nobody on his side and GBP (Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions) is not going to guarantee his purse.'

The Scot won the interim WBO lightweight belt by beating Michael Katsidis at Wembley Arena in November.

Burns said: 'I’m glad I've gone with this kind of fight. He's had one loss in 29 with 19 knock outs; you don’t get that kind of record if you can't punch. I'm sure it's going to be a cracking fight. I’m glad it’s in Glasgow, it’ll be good to fight back up in Scotland.
'I've not seen much footage of him, I can only go by his record. It's a risky fight and he's fought some good names. I can't afford to take him lightly; I treat all the fights the same and all the boxers I face with respect.'
'He will be a dangerous opponent,' Burns’ promoter Alex Morrison told STV. ‘He has several knockouts under his belt.

'He has won 28 out of 29 fights, so it will be a tough test for Ricky.'
Moses warned that he is coming to Scotland looking to become a two-time world champion.
He said: 'I’m pleased to have the opportunity to fight for a world title, I want to become a world champion again. I’m coming to win the fight.

Mayweather will face Cotto on May 5th.

Not exactly that superfight we were hoping for but who knows what happened.

Floyd claims this time round it was a simple case of accepting the terms which were apparently 50/50 with no hoops to jump through and Manny ducked him.

After Manny's last fight I feel he's slowly losing it and the best is probably past him. Mayweather is a boxing genius and Manny would need to be the person he was a while ago to edge Floyd. Anything can happen but I wouldn't favour Manny. The Floyd - Cotto meeting is still a decent fight but I feel Mayweather will show why he can take on anyone and win comfortably.

The Likelyhood of a Pacman and Money superfight has likely vanished now with Mayweather reporting to Prison a month after his match on May 5th and with neither fighters getting younger I just don't see it happening now.

Anyone got views on Pacman vs Bradley? I think its a stupid idea and Bradley has talked himself into a world of trouble. I bet he happens to get some form of 'injury' a week before the fight.

A update to the Chisora story.

Dereck Chisora has been arrested by German police after a brawl with fellow British boxer David Haye in Munich.

Chisora and his trainer, Don Charles, were taken from the city's airport by police as part of the investigation.

Haye and Chisora clashed at the post-fight press conference after Chisora was beaten on points by defending WBC champion Vitali Klitschko.

Police are still searching for Haye, who was not present at the hotel when sought for questioning.

Haye showed up at the news conference to confront Klitschko, who he believes changed his mind on a potential fight between the pair.

Chisora taunted an animal and he got bitten. Chisora and Frank Warren were baiting Haye into a fight which is now probably certain to happen and is a stupid idea and a bad move from both Warren and Chisora.

With 3 losses already to his name in quick succession he would have to start from the very back if he lost yet another fight. Watching the fight last night and seeing the way Chisora defended poorly against a very slow Vitali. He should think about that very carefully when picking an opponent that's massively faster than Vitali and has a devastating power punch.

This will be Audley Harrison all over again and We want to see Haye take on Vitali so not at all pleased with this. Based on last night's performance with Vitali I would be looking to avoid Haye at all costs.

Just let them fight, Chisora has it coming after the slaps and spitting. He was sat at the post press conference with this to say.

Quote:

"David, you and me can get it on in London. Be quiet. David Haye is an embarrassment.

"Sky Sports don't do Box Office because of David Haye. He messed up Box Office for all the young fighters and I'm going to give him two slaps for that."

Chisora continued: "If David Haye is a fighter he should fight me. Let's fight, me and you.

"David, how's your toe?"

Expect to see a Battle Of Britain, between Chisora and Haye very soon. This will be the next big fight they both have. Regardless of Frank Warren saying this wasn't staged, Haye was in Germany working for a Frank Warren channel and Frank was promoting the fight.

The British pair clashed at Saturday night's post-fight news conference in Munich after Chisora was beaten by Wladimir's brother Vitali.

"This behaviour kills the hard work of the people that have been polishing the image of the sport," said Klitschko.

"There has to be consequences otherwise boxing is going downhill fast."

Wladimir Klitschko, the IBF, WBO and WBA champion, has history with both men, having beaten Haye last summer and twice pulled out of bouts with Chisora through injury.

"This type of behaviour kills the hard work of former champs," he added. "And it teaches disrespect for the sport and fellow human beings."

Its this sort of hype and drama you need to spark up this dismal heavyweight division, Klitschko is talking out of his arse and He'll get his soon enough.

Now their's talks of lifetime bans. They cant be serious unless they willingly want to end British Heavyweight boxing.

I don't condone any of the actions but it makes up one hell of a promo and will be a massive draw for British Boxing. If the boxing board votes to ban the pair of them I don't see a future for Heavyweight boxing in Britain. If Vitali wants another big payday before retirement he knows David Haye is the only man that can generate a huge payday. It cant happen in Germany so it's about time these two brothers grew some balls and fought a big fight in the USA, Sick of seeing the Klits only taking on decent fighters in their own yard.

All Haye has to do is make a statement by destroying Chisora which shouldn't be too hard considering he couldn't duck a punch from a 40 year old man and has incredibly slow movement. Fully expect him to be Knocked out inside 3 rounds.

Chisora has already been fined for the slap. They can't punish him twice for that. He will be fined for the water spitting incident (which I think was the worst of the lot), and warned about his conduct after the fight (Haye threw the first blow didn't he).

No one will be banned from boxing - if they are it will be for 6 months (they probably wouldn't be fighting then anyway). Both will come out of their bans to take each other on, in a very anticipated fight which I for one would love to watch.

Haye and Vitali WILL happen. They simply cannot resist the urge. I seen what happened with Mormeck and lets be honest we can't say we didn't expect it.

Hats off to Wlad you knocked out a guy that's never been close to great. He was demolished at his prime by Haye.

Why go after Haye's victims if you can take Haye yourself. It's the simple fact this time round Haye has absolutely nothing to lose and will go out swinging those two arms round like windmills and to be fair if I was either of them.. I'd probably look to stay well away from a blot on my career at the stage the Klits are at.

Like I said Haye will talk Vitali into the ring and Vitali will get a fight the same way he did with Chisora as they simple have nothing to lose, the only difference being is David Haye is Faster, more agile and a whole world of power different than Chisora.

There's so many things about Mayweather's boxing that take a really fine eye to appreciate but show he truly is a master.
Many times during that fight the crowd was going mental for Cotto because he was throwing a load of punches and had Mayweather on the ropes, but that was exactly where Mayweather wanted to be, and the punches just weren't landing. Which was pretty much the same as the Ortiz fight, where people were convinced Ortiz was winning and Mayweather took the easy way out because he was getting hurt when in reality Ortiz was swinging a lot and missing with everything. Floyd is just ridiculously hard to hit.

It was interesting watching Mayweather fight in 10oz gloves, the extra size of them made for a completely different fight. Mayweather is all about precision and finding the gap in a guys guard, 10oz gives a far bigger guard compared to 8oz, so rather than being able to hit through he was throwing a weird sort of overhand right where it was starting out quite straight but then looping in at the end around Cotto's guard.

It's just crazy how much of an eye he has for everything, his reactions are just unbelievable. I hope Arum stops being a dick and lets the Manny fight happen, because Manny just isn't going to stand a chance, Floyd will wipe the floor with him and it'll finally shut up the "Floyd is ducking Manny" idiots.

Bute's only well known opponent before last night was Glen Johnson, I wouldn't judge his ability based on what was an undefeated record.

Brings back Memories of Khan vs Salita in which Salita was floored by the very first punch of the night.

Yeah, this is why I was backing Froch heavily. Froch's two defeats have came because he'll fight anyone.

Bute's record was because he had hand picked opponents he could beat, and even then he needed the referees help to stay undefeated when Andrade knocked him out in the dying seconds of the 12th, only for the referee to give the most ******** 10 count boxing has ever seen.

Anyone looking at this fight logically could see Froch should have been favourite. Bute is overhyped and relies on hometown advantage.

Quality shots from Froch. What suprised me was that the ref was actually counting out Bute after that awesome 3 punch combo that ended the fight. MAybe he had a bet on for a knockout in the later stages.

The tragic life of five-times boxing world champion Johnny Tapia has come to an end as he was found dead at home in Albuquerque. He was 45.

Paul Williams is also likely paralysed following a motorcycle crash.
Shame as him against Alvarez was looking like a good fight.

Khan vs Garcia (14th July)

Danny Garcia is undefeated but this will be a repeat of Carl Froch's fight.

Hasn't fought top fighters to prove himself and has everything to lose going into this fight. Khan's speed will get the better of him immediately.

Manny has just been screwed in one of the worst points decisions I've seen in Boxing.

Clear win for Manny that is daylight robbery.

When we get these terrible decisions it really does bring boxing into disrepute and this is not the first time it has happened lately.:td::(

I think the fight should be re-scored. That's a truly shocking decision, Khan's loss to Peterson could have been close even if it was controversial, This fight however was a country mile win for Pacman. Bradley knew he had been battered for the most and taking a look at the punches landed it's clear Manny dominated. There is simply so way in hell Timothy Bradley just beat Pacman.

There's no way in hell Pacquiao beat Marquez in his last fight either, so forgive me for not feeling too sorry for him.

Was flicking through the channels tonight, and came across the fight night on SKY. Why was the fight ruled as a draw after an accidental clash of heads? I know one had a cut above one eye, but thought it was a bit daft to rule the fight as a draw.

The hilarious decision re-looked at.

Can scream Marquez all day but fact is this fight was as one sided as they come.

Hopefully Bradley thinks he is unstoppable and climbs into the ring with Mayweather.

Simple fact: Manny can not and will not beat Floyd Mayweather, Nor will Tim Bradley or anyone else for that matter.
