50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
So, had 50mb bb switched on on thursday as an upgrade from 30mb and its slower then the 30mb service.
i have used speedtest, net at different times over 24hours. (9am, 1pm, 6pm, 9pm, 1am, 5am) and not once has the BB came back at over 24mb just under half of what it should be getting, even on the 30mb it would average between 29mb and 30mb. was it a mistake upgrading!? here is my connection info Connection Startup Procedure Procedure Status Comment Acquire Downstream Channel 314750000 Hz Locked Connectivity State OK Operational Boot State OK Operational Configuration File OK Security Enabled BPI+ Downstream Channels Lock Status Modulation Channel ID Max Raw Bit Rate Frequency Power SNR Docsis/EuroDocsis locked Locked QAM256 107 55616000 Kbits/sec 314750000 Hz 11.4 dBmV 37.9 dB Hybrid Locked QAM256 105 55616000 Kbits/sec 298750000 Hz 12.1 dBmV 38.0 dB Hybrid Locked QAM256 106 55616000 Kbits/sec 306750000 Hz 11.6 dBmV 38.1 dB Hybrid Locked QAM256 108 55616000 Kbits/sec 322750000 Hz 12.0 dBmV 38.2 dB Hybrid Unlocked Unknown 0 0 Ksym/sec 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV 0.0 dB Unknown Unlocked Unknown 0 0 Ksym/sec 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV 0.0 dB Unknown Unlocked Unknown 0 0 Ksym/sec 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV 0.0 dB Unknown Unlocked Unknown 0 0 Ksym/sec 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV 0.0 dB Unknown Upstream Channels Lock Status Modulation Channel ID Max Raw Bit Rate Frequency Power Locked ATDMA 5 20480 Kbits/sec 45800000 Hz 42.0 dBmV Unlocked Unknown 0 0 Ksym/sec 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV Unlocked Unknown 0 0 Ksym/sec 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV Unlocked Unknown 0 0 Ksym/sec 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV Primary Downstream Service Flow Downstream(0) SFID 27001 Max Traffic Rate 53000000 bps Max Traffic Burst 10000 bytes Mix Traffic Rate 0 bps Primary Upstream Service Flow Upstream(0) SFID 27000 Max Traffic Rate 5140000 bps Max Traffic Burst 8160 bytes Mix Traffic Rate 0 bps Max Concatenated Burst 8160 bytes Scheduling Type Best Effort |
Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
You need a technician with your downstreams being all around 12dBmV so call 0800 052 0431 which is the 50Mb support line.

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
Not that it's likely to help the speeds though.
Sounds like you may have moved to a different CMTS and, like many these days, it's showing the strain of supporting 100Mbps unlimited clients. Try setting up a TBB quality monitor - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/monitors.html - you'll need to enable "Respond to ping from WAN" somewhere in the advanced setup pages. Maybe a reboot would help if it's upstream congestion and doing it switches you to a different channel. |

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
Once it's run a while it should be clear what your connection is like. TBH it's not looking all that good at the start considering the time of day.

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
Yes I was just guessing on a CMTS move based on the fact his 30Mbps was apparently OK. Presumably that would require some physical cabling change further back in the network then? As is pretty obvious I don't know just what it is that determines which CMTS you run on.
Maybe just a different upstream channel then and upstream contention? Certainly the TBB quality monitor looks like it may generate into a dismal one. |

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
There are large numbers of people posting high power levels recently for some reason or other. I've never had high downstream but I have had 58 up in the past for several weeks until an engineer actually bothered to turn up as booked and that made precisely zero difference to speeds or errors.
I've seen folks post higher on the community board and the techs replying there never offered to book an engineer with some of them. I guess we'll know soon enough if the power adjustment cures the speed problems. |

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
My best ever speed with VM was actually on 20mb
when "seeding" things i could generally seed on 240kbs for days. now since the 30mb and 50mb I'm lucky to able to seed anything at over 50kbs for more then 1 hour. Anyway, at least while i was on 30mb speedtest would show an average 29 or even 31mb at peak times. |

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
Wireless Pab, I'm aware there will be a difference from Wired to Wireless, but i had ran wireless for years with no issues until the 30mb / 50mb was installed

I can remember when I upgraded from 20 Meg to 50, the best wireless speedtest I could get was approx 29 Meg ish, which at the time I was more than happy with because it left plenty of bandwidth available for everything else. A kind of automatic Qos if you like :) Have you tried speedtesting with a wired connection |

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
Speedtest's are inherently unreliable, but try testing (wired) to the London (namesco) server as I find it to be pretty decent.
Testing at peak time means you could be clashing with the world and his wife all testing at the same time, which can screw with your results a wee bit, I try to test between 10pm and midnight. |
Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
i shall try all three again around 11pm and report back :)

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
Well that has blown the suggestion that you can't get 50Mbps because the power level is a tad too high...
It also demonstrates once again that the Superhub wireless performance is often poor. The probable correction will be to use InSSIDer and find the least full WiFi channel then if the SH still makes a dog's breakfast of things switch it to modem mode and use a proper router. The solution to your congestion problem is to alter your sleeping habits and just use your connection from 2am to 4am. |

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
You are running the Superhub in G mode. You must have had it N before to have got 30Mbps from it as G tops out at about what you are seeing.
Channel 1 isn't a good choice for your Buffalo either as there is another strong signal already on it. The graphs show the free channels better. |
Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
The 30mb was generally "ok" was always between 29mb and 31mb maybe slowed to about 23mb at the usual peak times.
the uploads were always crap while seeding things - which is why VM said i should try the 50mb for an extra £6 pm When the guy came to "install" the 50mb he put another SuperHub in and took the old one |

Pretty much, done and dusted in all of less then 5mins! - i have now changed it to 145Mbps, seems to have improved some what.

Re: 50mb BB Slower then 30mb!?
You could try the Full Monty neighbour hostile 300Mbps mode - before the memory leak bug in the firmware was fixed that used to be a sure fire way of keeling mine over in a heap but it may well be OK now (I don't know for sure as I gave up on the SH and got hold of a VMNG300 instead).
Some of your earlier speedtests still suggest there may be peak time congestion - just how bad only time will show. |
