Virgin Media signs BBC sports coverage deal
 
Virgin Media has struck a deal with the BBC to give viewers access to hundreds of hours of extra coverage of major sports events next year, including live video streams from the London 2012 Olympics, through its TiVo service.

The wide-ranging deal will give Virgin Media customers access to "enhanced" BBC TV services – the additional video streams and interactive content accessed via the red button – for a range of the corporation's news and sports coverage next year.

Significantly, Virgin Media customers will now have access to all 24 streams of coverage that the BBC is broadcasting of various Olympic events.

Virgin Media and the BBC today announced a new deal that will bring next-generation BBC TV services to the Virgin Media TiVo® Service in 2012, continuing the successful partnership which saw BBC iPlayer launch on its first TV platform.

The BBC and Virgin Media will now begin to develop new applications and user experiences for TiVo homes - paving the way for Virgin Media customers to gain access to the BBC’s interactive coverage of next year’s major sporting events via a brand new Red Button experience, including Formula 1, Wimbledon, Euro 2012 and the London 2012 Olympics.

A forthcoming BBC Sport app will build on these “enhanced Red Button” services to bring next-generation viewing experiences to connected TVs in 2012. The new app will bring together all the live streams from the BBC’s existing Red Button service, video streams on-demand and additional content from BBC Online - providing a next-generation TV experience of Wimbledon, Formula 1, Euro 2012 and London 2012.

The BBC Sport app will sit alongside the BBC’s existing BBC News and BBC iPlayer apps.

The partnership between Virgin Media and the BBC has already delivered full integration of BBC iPlayer into Virgin Media’s TiVo Service. BBC catch-up programmes are now even easier to access through the search, menus, and EPG, made possible by the openness and flexibility of the TiVo platform.

The award-winning BBC News app, which brings together the best of BBC News on TV and online in an on-demand service will launch on Virgin Media TiVo. Accessible via the Red Button and the Virgin Media TiVo ‘Apps and Games’ section, it is expected to launch in the first quarter of next year

My advice to you is to get a Tivo as once you have one you will not want to go back to your old box.

Very good news, But there is one flaw with this? How many sports have the BBC now done with other providers and how many will be going as well?

Yes 2 Apps, the BBC News App will have interactive content from BBC Online :) It will make the BBC Multi-screen app look prehistoric! :D

You get a lot for your £3.
l am very happy to pay the £3 but not everybody will feel that way.

Great news. I would say celebrity app , weather app will be no longer needed when the 2 BBC apps come in Q1 next year.

I'm pretty sure a very similar service with the same content will be made available via Youview which launches in a couple of months. There is nothing to suggest this is exclusive to Virgin, and seeing BBC are one of the drivers and content providers of Youview it's almost a guarantee a similar service will be rolled out on Youview.

Yes i agree. The good news is Tivo will have 24 live streams.

Do Sky only have 5 live streams ?

Why:confused: It is one of the greatest sporting events for a generation to happen in this country and people have to miss out? I was a Athlete when I was younger for a club in Barnsley and when we traveled we were glad for the people that came and saw us. If it was televised we would have wanted it to go out to the widest audience.

Its BBC so they're essentially not allowed to do exclusives, as it should be considering everyone pays £100+ a year for it.

Excellent news from VM well done.

I am quite willing to convert to TiVo once the features i would like are up and running ie the ones i can now use on my V+ , the £3 is not really an issue with me just the fuctionality.:)

And now that functionality is only weeks or months away Richard and once you get a Tivo you will not regret it.

Am I the only one that has thought this that the red button will become almost redundant? So for all of those that were asking when it will come will now be angry as it would take you to a choice of apps?

It will probably have a BBC bridge if you press red on a BBC Channel.

We'll have to give it a miss as we forked out £99.95 for a second V+ box so no money left in the pot. Is there any chance of any of this content being available online through virgin media player or something.

Doing that would encourage a lot of non Virgin TV customers to Yourview

Well i now read The guardian fully and i think that is incorrect.

That says nothing about whether they will be on YouView or not.

It's saying as a Virgin Media customer you'll need TiVo i.e. it won't be on the V+/V HD or V Box

Well Sky , Freesat will only have 5 live streams ( getting reduced to 1 after the olympics ) Freeview will only have 1 stream.

Wrong Skys STB is Internet connected as are some freesat boxes and Youview is freeview with Internet connectivity granted Skys STB can't run apps in its current form but Youview almost certainly will.

Well for some people the Olympics will pass them by l suspect but l have always been a big sports fan so l will be glued to the action and having 24 streams will give us a great choice from which to pick what we want to watch.
