Quote:

Reigning champion Adrian Lewis survived a major scare on the opening night of the 2012 Ladbrokes World Darts Championship.

Quote:

"I was 2-0 down and was stung by a wasp in the break and that's when I thought it's not my day," said Lewis, who nonetheless insisted he never felt he was going to crash out.
Quote:

With Lewis clearly struggling for form, Heydon was in no mood to let up and double six took him into a two-set lead.

Quote:

Lewis hailed his opponent's play, telling Sky Sports: "He had me under the cosh. The way he was finishing in the first two sets was phenomenal."

Quote:

While Lewis survived, the same could not be said of sixth seed Mark Webster, who crashed out to Richie Burnett.

Quote:

Afterwards, Burnett said he believes he can still add another world title to his CV.

Quote:

Earlier in the night, Roland Scholten saw off Jamie Caven 3-1 in the tournament's opening match.
Quote:

Despite some 'double trouble', Jones beat Scott MacKenzie 3-1 in the day's final match to progress.

Thu 15 Dec 2011 - Evening Session

19:10 First Round Jamie Caven 1 - 3 Roland Scholten

20:15 Preliminary Round Paul Barham 2 - 4 Scott MacKenzie

Quote:

Phil Taylor averaged just short of a 100 as he moved into the second round of the Ladbrokes World Championship with a 3-0 victory over Japanese qualifier Haruki Muramatsu.

Quote:

Wes Newton produced an impressive display to show he will be hard to ignore. The world number five has enjoyed a fine year and he proved too good for Kurt van de Rijck, winning in three straight sets at the Alexandra Palace.
Quote:

Newton next face Justin Pipe, who overcame a poor start to see off Sean Reed 3-1 in the night's opening encounter.
Quote:

Co Stompe saw off Michael Smith, also by a 3-0 scoreline.
Can Phil the Power win his 16th world title early next year?

Steve Beaton battled back from the brink of defeat to beat Magnus Caris in an opening-round thriller at the PDC World Championship.
Quote:

The Swede then began the third set with a 13-darter but couldn't finish the job off, failing with three shots for the match as he seemingly became side-tracked by some heckling from the bumper crowd.
Quote:

Vincent van der Voort was also pushed hard in his opener on Saturday evening, eventually running out a 3-2 winner against Mark Hylton.
Quote:

Paul Nicholson found himself in a battle against Mensur Suljovic, the man who knocked out Michael van Gerwen and James Wade last year.
Quote:

The final first-round match of the night was short but not so sweet for Denis Ovens, as he was forced to pull out of his tie with Kevin Munch due to a back injury.

Yes while Phil will be the greatest darts player there ever was it would be nice if Gary Anderson or James Wade won it for once.

Have not had chance to watch any of it this year due to problems with both our internet and tv (missing most of the sky channels). So I am delighted that I have been able to catch up with this. Belgium's Kim Huybrechts continued his impressive run, 'The Hurricane' coming from a set down to record a superb 4-1 victory over Paul Nicholson.

Quote:

Nicholson looked to have got himself in a position to clinch the fifth but then missed seven more darts at a double to allow Huybrechts to steal in and take out 80 to secure a crucial break in the third leg.

It was to cost Nicholson dearly as, after he missed two more darts at a double to stay alive in the next, Huybrechts hit double-eight at the third time of asking to seal his place in the quarter-finals.

It was a case of 'after the Lord Mayor's show' for Dave Chisnall who crashed out of the Ladbrokes World Championship after being whitewashed 4-0 by Andy Hamilton.
Quote:

Chisnall never came close to hitting the heights of his victory over 15-time world champion Phil Taylor in the previous round and departed the tournament with barely a whimper.

Simon Whitlock withstood a terrific fightback from Michael van Gerwen to book his place in the quarter-finals with a 4-3 victory.

Andy Hamilton reached his second World Championship semi-final courtesy of a 5-2 victory against Belgium's Kim Huybrechts.

The Stoke thrower produced a fine display in the opening quarter-final of the day, which included 11 maximums and a three-dart average of over 102.
Quote:

"If I keep producing the good averages that I have achieved in my previous couple of matches then I have nothing to worry about."

Quote:

After the match Huybrechts said: "These last couple of weeks have been a great experience for me. It's the biggest achievement of career to date and I am extremely happy, despite today's loss.

A bit staggering for someone to blame his opponents girlfriend for his loss but typical Nicholson in my mind as he has a big mouth but when the crowd starts getting on to him his game falls apart and he oftens like to blame someone else for his failures.[COLOR="Silver"]

James Wade held his nerve to come through a dramatic sudden death leg and clinch a thrilling 5-4 victory over John Part in a World Championship classic at Alexandra Palace.

Quote:

However, the three-time world champion came roaring back to lead 4-3 and had the darts in the eighth set as he threw for the match.

Quote:

An enthralling seventh set saw Wade move two legs to one ahead with a 12-darter, but Part levelled and then hit tops after his opponent had missed the same double to move 4-3 ahead overall.

Fittingly Part forced a sudden death leg with a 13-dart leg of his own but, after Wade had got the darts by hitting bull, it was the Englishman who won out with an ice-cool two-dart finish of 85 with his opponent waiting on 40.

'The Machine' now faces the winner of Friday evening's clash between defending champion Adrian Lewis and Terry Jenkins in the last four

Reigning world champion Adrian Lewis secured a quite remarkable come-from-behind World Championship semi-final win over James Wade amid farcical scenes at Alexandra Palace.

Lewis won 10 legs in a row to come from 5-1 down to beat Wade 6-5 and book a final meeting with Andy Hamilton, but it had looked for such a long time that it would be his opponent that would be going through.

Wade, known as 'The Machine', had a dart to win the match in the eighth set but broke down, allowing 'Jackpot' Lewis in to checkout on 98, and the Stoke thrower did not lose a leg after that, whitewashing Wade in the final three sets

Adrian Lewis retained his PDC World Darts Championships title with victory in this year's final at Alexandra Palace.

The 26-year-old saw off fellow Stoke thrower Andy Hamilton 7-3 and land the £200,000 first prize and trophy.

Lewis showed few signs of tiredness, despite a late finish to his semi-final against James Wade the previous night, to see off his tenacious 44-year-old opponent.

Lewis said: "It's not quite sunk in yet. I take everything on the chin and have a busy year ahead. This is (title) number two and I'll have a lot more.

"The fightback against James Wade last night won me the tournament. I believed in myself."

Asked how many times he could win the world title, he said: "At least 10."

"But Andy hit a lot of good shots - I want to see him in the Premier League because he deserves a place."

Hamilton, who received £100,000 as runner-up, said: "It's been a great week for me. I wanted to win the final so badly but I'm happy to be here.

"Keep watching me. Next year I'll be back again and hopefully I'll be winning it then."

Lewis saw three darts bounce out in the first three legs of the match but hit back from the disappointment to take the first set with a 122 checkout in the fifth leg.

The defending champion hit the first 180 of the match in the second leg of the second set, enabling him to take it against the darts - but Hamilton won the set 3-1 to level the contest.

Hamilton started the third set with a maximum before Lewis almost replicated the nine-dart finish he produced in last year's final win over Gary Anderson. This time he missed double 12 - but hit it two darts later.

Lewis was gradually establishing control and a 12-dart leg gave him a 3-2 lead. Hamilton then struggled in the closing stages of the sixth set, with Lewis nailing double 15 to go 4-2 clear.

However, Hamilton took the opening leg of the seventh set. The confidence of 'The Hammer' was boosted further when he took the second leg against the darts and he held the advantage to win the set despite a 180 from Lewis.

Lewis, though, was dominant in the eighth set, hitting double 11 - the same double which won him the title last year - to win the fourth leg and restore his two-set advantage at 5-3.

Lewis set himself up for another nine-dart finish with successive 180s at the start of the third leg in the ninth set but missed the opportunity, although he was able to break after Hamilton had missed double 16.

Although Hamilton broke back with double eight, Lewis produced a 118 checkout to snatch the set and move to within one of the title.

Hamilton took the first two legs of the 10th set but Lewis won the third and took the next against the darts to move to the brink of victory.

Both players started the fifth leg with 180s and after each had missed doubles, Lewis nailed double top to wrap up the success.

World Championship finalist Andy Hamilton and Players Championship winner Kevin Painter have been given the two PDC wildcards for the 2012 McCoy's Premier League Darts.

Both players will make their debut in the tournament after Hamilton came off second best only to Adrian Lewis at Alexandra Palace and Painter claimed a first major triumph of his career in Doncaster last month.

Back-to-back world champion Lewis qualifies automatically along with the rest of the PDC's top four - Phil Taylor, James Wade and Gary Anderson - with Simon Whitlock and Raymond van Barneveld given Sky Sports Wildcards.

The eight players were confirmed at the PDC Annual Awards Dinner alongside the announcement of McCoy's as sponsors for the tournament, which begins in Manchester on February 9 and finishes at London's O2 Arena on May 17.

Prize money has risen to a total of £450,000, with £150,000 to the winner.

PDC chairman Barry Hearn said: "I'm delighted to welcome McCoy's as sponsors of what promises to be the best-ever Premier League Darts.

"The form of Andy Hamilton and Kevin Painter recently has seen them earn deserved Wildcards to play in the McCoy's Premier League, and I'm sure they will add great colour and quality to the tournament.

"Simon Whitlock was sensational in reaching the World Championship semi-finals and Raymond van Barneveld remains one of the most popular players throughout the darts world.

"With Gary Anderson defending his title, Adrian Lewis coming into the tournament as a two-time world champion and Phil Taylor and James Wade looking to win back the Premier League trophy, we're all hugely excited ahead of the tournament starting in Manchester next month."

BDO World Championship: Bobby George on the Lakeside contenders

Quote:

The BDO World Championship begins at the Lakeside on Saturday, with defending champion Martin Adams looking for his third successive crown, and fourth overall.

Among the 31 players trying to stop Adams are former champions Ted Hankey and John Walton, last year's beaten finalist Dean Winstanley, former PDC Grand Slam champion Scott Waites and eight tournament debutants.

BBC Sport pundit Bobby George, twice a finalist at the Lakeside, gives his view on some of the leading contenders.

Quote:

MARTIN ADAMS
Age: 55

Seeded: 1

Last year: Winner

Nickname: Wolfie

Bobby's view: "The three-time champion is always there or thereabouts, but he could be under pressure against Scott Mitchell in the first round. Even though he likes wearing pink shirts, Mitchell is no mug and could beat Adams, especially over the short, best-of-five format in round one.

"Adams has gone on the board of the BDO and it's difficult to run the game and play it, so I don't think it was a good move for him to have done that. He will have to be on the button because he could go out to Mitchell. After that he's got a reasonably good draw."

Did you know? Adams is an ambassador for the UK Wolf Conservation Trust and has adopted his own wolf, called Duma.

SCOTT WAITES
Age: 34

Seeded: 2

Last year: Second round

Nickname: Scotty 2 Hotty

Bobby's view: "To me, Scott Waites is the favourite, but he has never really performed at the Lakeside, much like Gary Anderson before he switched to the PDC. Since his move, Anderson has been very successful and, like the Scot, Waites has won and been runner-up at the PDC's Grand Slam, which is very impressive.

"Waites is up for it and he shouldn't have any problems with Andy Boulton in the first round. The thing Waites will have to do is hit his doubles. He will outscore most players but he has to finish well. He's playing good darts and he is more than capable of winning here."

Did you know? Waites's day job is as a carpenter, and his ambition is to play darts in the Woolpack from TV's Emmerdale.

DEAN WINSTANLEY
Age: 30

Seeded: 3

Last year: Runner-up

Nickname: Over The Top

Bobby's view: "The world rankings are not a fair reflection, because Winstanley should be world number one. He is right up there with Waites as a potential winner, but they are in the same half of the draw so could meet in the semi-finals, which is a shame.

"Winstanley was my outsider last year - no-one really knew him. He got to the final and had the chance to win, but couldn't take it. He has played good darts over the past year, including a good performance at the Grand Slam, where he got out of the group stages.

"His counting is not so good, but that's improving and the more he learns, the better he gets. In the first round Winstanley plays Joey ten Berge, who has been to the Lakeside a few times and is dangerous on his day, but I'll be very surprised if the number three seed is beaten."

Did you know? Winstanley's partner Lorraine Farlam is seeded fourth in the women's event.

TED HANKEY
Age: 43

Seeded: 15

Last year: First round

Nickname: The Count

Bobby's view: "I will back Hankey to get through his first-round match against Clive Barden, but then he could play Scott Waites in the second round and I don't think he's good enough to get past that.

"He sulks on stage and plays up to the crowd, but he isn't like that - he's a pussycat really. It's a show he puts on when he's in trouble. I think he does that to put the other player off.

"If you're playing well, then you don't hear the crowd but it's getting old hat now, much like Mervyn King before he moved to the PDC. If he plays darts, he's got a chance. If he plays up, he's got no chance."

Did you know? Hankey was first nicknamed the Count when he played Dracula in a school play at the age of 15.

TONY O'SHEA
Age: 50

Seeded: 8

Last year: First round

Nickname: Silverback

Bobby's view: "O'Shea is a pretty tidy player and should beat Steve West in the first round, even though he's not playing great at the moment. He has struggled of late but he's dangerous.

"He has been to final before and knows what it's about. He's a dangerous sort of player and is capable of winning it."

Did you know? O'Shea is a huge Stockport County fan and wears the club colours of blue and white when playing darts.

THE OUTSIDERS
Bobby's view: "Robbie Green against Darryl Fitton in the first round is the match I'm really looking forward to. Green is the fourth seed but that won't help him against Fitton. Fitton is playing well - and he's my outsider. If he beats Green, he could come up against another dangerous unseeded player, Martin Phillips, in the second round.

"Phillips is a dustman by trade and doesn't do much travelling to tournaments abroad, so misses out on the ranking points. No-one wants to play him in the early rounds and he could beat Wesley Harms in round one.

"If they get through, then the draw could open up for them. They are both very experienced and very capable players. Fitton is a good scorer but weak on his doubles; Phillips is a good all-rounder with a good temperament."

Defending champion Martin Adams says he will have the "upper hand" against Scott Mitchell in the first round of the BDO World Championship.

Adams, who beat Mitchell at the Dutch Open in November, is bidding for a record-equalling third successive Lakeside crown, and fourth overall.

Quote:

If he wins for a third successive year in a record-breaking 19th appearance at the Lakeside, Adams will match Eric Bristow, who triumphed in 1984, 1985 and 1986.
Quote:

"It would be immense for me, because I'd be able to equal another darting record and also set myself up to better that record," Adams added.

"I've got my eyes on three on the spin for the Lakeside and hopefully I can better it in 2013

Martin “The Assassin” Atkins produced a giant-killing display in the all-Yorkshire clash to gun down former world champ John Walton 3-1.

It took Leeds-based Atkins 44-minutes to bid seventh seed John Boy “good night” as he fired out his title intentions with an eye-catching 132 checkout.

And it was all the more remarkable because the former world title winner from Sheffield stole the opening set against the throw.

There was intense interest in the all-northern encounter with former Yorkshire favourite Dennis “Bimbo” Hickling who appeared in the world championships back in the 1990s among those in capacity crowd

Walton signalled his intentions hitting a maximum as he stole the throwing advantage in the opening set. He took the next and then blasted in a 97 checkout, finished on double 10, wrapping up the set in a speedy eight minutes.

All four opening legs of the second set went against the throw after both players misses 100 plus checkouts, Atkins levelling the match on double four, with his fourth attempt at a double after the former world champ missed bull for an 88 checkout and a 2-0 match lead.

The players traded the opening legs in the third set, Walton clinching double 18 against the throw to edge 2-1 in front but then fluffed double tops for a set-winning 100 finish, Atkins, who had hammered in a maximum, exited on 69, finished on double 18 to level the set. Despite a brace of 140s from John Boy, the Assassin hit his 72 checkout, gunning down the double 18 target with a single dart.

The opening legs of the fourth set went against the throw, Walton hitting his third 180 of the match in the next as he finished on 64, Atkins replying with a 13-darter. The Assassin had a place in the next round in his sights as he gunned down Walton, firing out a 180 and 140 followed with a superlative 132 victory checkout, finished on double 18.

Quote:

Sparkling debutant Paul Jennings tamed Garry “The Cougar” Thompson into a 3-1 submission to win through their first round clash.

But the 12th seed from Hartlepool was made to work for his victory in the 40-minute gripper by the never-say-die West Yorkshireman.

The newcomer made a dramatic start to his Lakeside debut hitting bull for an opening set winning 81 checkout, unchallenged by Thompson who has twice reached the last eight.

Showing no trace of first night nerves in his Frimley Green bow, Jennings surged 2-0 ahead, taming the man known as the Cougar, who scrambled to the next two legs, after impressive Jennings missed double 18 for a 147 set winner. In the deciding fifth leg Jenno fired out a maximum as he eased into a shock 2-0 match lead.

But Thompson is a scrapper and blitzed through the third set unchallenged, clinching it with an 81 checkout, finished on double 18, to tee up his 47th birthday celebrations tomorrow (Monday).

Double eight gave Jenno a 2-0 fourth set lead only to see the gritty Silsden man claw his way back taking the third leg on double tops and then firing out a 180 as he clinched the fourth leg on double five to take it into a deciding leg.

Thompson was favourite for the leg after hitting a maximum, Jennings sweeping back with 174 but then missing an astonishing six match-winning doubles before scrambling home on double four after Thomson himself had missed doubles to keep his tournament hopes alive.

“I’ve waited 15 years to play at Lakeside,” said a beaming Jennings after his win, spoiling Thompson’s birthday plans!

Joint favourite Scott Waites called the tune, despatching karaoke-loving Andy Boulton in an absorbing 42 minute encounter 3-1.

After a storming start to the match, the Yorkshireman had to dig deep after the man nicknamed X-Factor threatened to spoil the script but felt the full wrath of the man nicknamed “Scotty to Hotty.”

The 2011 World Master narrowly missed taking the opening leg of the match against the throw when he wired bull for a show-stopping 123 finish. He then levelled and followed up with eye-catching 106 and 116 checkouts to steamroller to a 3-1 opening set success.

As he romped to his third successive leg he blasted in the week’s biggest checkout – 156 finished on double 16 to annex the opening leg of the second set. The following two were swapped but Boulton missed double 11 for a set-winning 142 checkout, as Waites powered in a 180 and 72 finish completed on double tops. The deciding fifth leg was a hard fought affair but Boulton blasted in a 64 checkout to level the match.

Waites opened up a 2-1 lead in the third set but then missed two attempts for double 16 for the set, with Boulton needing 139. After hitting a perfect treble 20, he followed up with treble 19 and looking on in disbelief as his third dart narrowly missed a set saving double 11. Waites grateful of a second chance fired in double 18 with his second dart.

The Halifax player eased into a 2-0 lead in the fourth set including a 134 checkout finished with double 16 but then missed two shots at his favourite double 18 and a brace for double four to win the match, Boulton nipping in to clinch 65 on double four.

Leaving himself 140, Waites hit two 60s but then wired double 10, Boulton powerless to respond as the Yorkshireman returned, needing all three darts to cross the line with a match-winning double 10.

Lakeside newcomer Christian Kist showed he has lots of vroom, vroom as he motored into the second round, dumping out sixth seed Jan Dekker 3-2.

The 25-year-old from Vroomshop in central east Holland made a dramatic entrance, his fast-throwing emphatic style endearing him to the Frimley Green faithful as he won the all-Netherlands clash in a 48-minute encounter.

Kist is the latest player from the land of tulips and windmills to star at Lakeside, ironically dismissing the Dutch star who burst on to the scene 12 months ago and was expected to make a big impact this year.

Dekker known as “The Coat” marched confidently on to the stage in a trademark white jacket his opponent opting for a more traditional black playing shirt.

The match began at feverish pace as both players pounded the 60 sector with vengeance, Dekker hitting a 180 in the second leg but it was debutant Kist, who works on the roads, who laid down his intentions with a 3-1 success with the throw.

Both players hit maximums – a brace from Kist - in the next set as all four legs went with the throwing advantage. Kist fired in his third 180 to steal the momentum and snatched the advantage to exit on 81 with double 16, leaving a shell-shocked Dekker 2-0 down.

Games went with the darts in the next set, Kist agonising after missing bull for a huge 121 finish in the second leg. A brace of 140s steered Kist ahead in the next, Dekker snatching the leg against the throw with a 58 finish to pull back a set.

A maximum steered the roadworker to the opening leg of fourth set against the throw, Dekker delivering an 11-dart reply finished on 81 and defending his throw in the next. Despite hitting a maximum and 134, Kist nipped in to take out 64 with double 18 to level the set.

It was nip and tuck to the double, Dekker missing three match-saving doubles and then Kist two for victory, as a tense Dekker missed a further two darts for double six before hitting the all-important green bit to take the match into a deciding fifth set.

The opening three legs went with the throw, a 120 score paving the way for a match-winning double 10 for Kist - dart’s latest sensational young star.

Flying Dutchman Willy van de Wiel charged into the second round, sweeping aside former warhouseman Dave Prins 3-0 in a rapid 37 minutes.

It was clinical display from the 29-year-old 10th seed from southern Holland, who reaches the second round for the third time.

The Dutch carpenter nailed his intentions in the opening sets, annexing six of the opening seven legs as Peterlee’s Prins screwed his face in agony, suffering his third consecutive opening round dismissal.

The Dutch ace, wearing glasses for the first time in the world championship, stamped his authority right from the off in the opening set with a clinical 3-0 success, Prins struggling to settle in his third appearance on the Frimley Green stage with a new set of 26 gram darts.

Prins powered into the second set to take the opening leg with the throw on double 18, the Dutchman taking the next two and then opening up a 2-0 match lead after Prins failed to pressurise Van de Wiel.

There was more of the same in the third set as Van de Wiel, with the throwing advantage took a 2-1 lead and then booked his passage in the second round with a 54 checkout, completed on double 16.

Afterwards the delighted Dutchman said: “Dave can play much better than that but the first round is always difficult.”

And the 10th seed said that when he feels good on stage his play speeds up.

“My hand shakes when I play so I try to throw quickly. I feel good when I am throwing fast.”

Promising Dutch newcomer Wesley Harms coasted into the last 16 repelling battling left-handed Welshman Martin Phillips 3-1.

"Sparky" the Dutch electrician short-circuited the hopes of the experienced Dolgellau double semi finalist, punishing him for countless missed doubles.

Harms from north Holland produced a performance which betrayed his youthful 27 years against Wales' most capped international.

Sparky charged into the match annexing six of the opening seven legs, including taking the throwing advantage away from Phillips in the opening set.

The man from the Principality took the deciding fifth leg of the third set to begin his comeback and despite losing the opening leg of the fourth set he took the second and third legs.

Harms levelled the set but Phillips who had consistently missed doubles failed to peg double 10 in the deciding fifth leg to save his tournament hopes as the talented Dutchman hit double one to move into the second round

Former double winner Ted "The Count" Hankey eased into the last 16 after burying impressive debutant Clive Barden 3-2 remaining cool in soaring temperatures on stage.

Losing a 2-0 lead the Shropshire-based 15th seed had to dig deep as the match was taken to a nailbiting fifth set.

Hankey used his experience to overcome dangerous Barden, deliberately trying to slow the quick-throwing 33-year-old but the Lakeside newcomer took it all in his stride.

Bullying his opponent, Hankey fired out a maximum as he annexed the opening set unchallenged against the throw, his power throwing giving him the luxury of having time to miss doubles.

The Count missed double tops for a 120 checkout in the opening leg of the second as Barden exited on double four, both players hitting 180s as legs were traded, the 15th seed missing the chance to take the set after fluffing an attempt for double 20. In the deciding fifth, Hankey nailed his title intentions on the match, producing a superb 120 finish, completed on double tops.

Despite missing doubles Hankey stole the opening leg of the third set against the throw but Hot Dog leapt in to grab the next with a 97 checkout, finished on double 12, adding the next with a 51 checkout, The Count pouncing to take the fourth witha 145 finish. But despite a 140 from Hankey it was Barden who produced the goods, snatching the set with double 16.

And he piled on the pressure in the opening leg of the fourth, producing the tournament's highest checkout of 160 to stun The Count, who needed three double attempts to level in the next. Barden annexed the next for a 2-1 set lead, holding his nerve to level the match on double five.

The former world champ hit double 18 against the throw to open the deciding fifth set, followed up taking the second and then clinched victory with a two dart 85 checkout finished on double tops after newcomer Barden missed.

Afterwards confident a profusely sweating Hankey who said the temperature on stage was the hottest he had known, said he knew Clive Barden was a dangerous opponent.

"He has been up there in all the tournaments he has played during the past 12 months. I did not want to come off stage after two sets for the break. He went loony afterwards scoring well and hitting doubles.

"However once I got the opening leg of the fifth set I knew I could win and I believe I can win this week, My next match againt Scott will be tough, he is a brilliant player but I have just got to go out and play darts," said Hankey

Little known Belgian Geert de Vos made a big name for himself grounding 11th seed Tony “Tornado” West 3-1, the 11th seed with a confident display in his Frimley Green debut.

West was forced to borrow the darts of Tony Martin - husband of women’s semi finalist Anastasia Dobromyslova - after leaving one of his darts in Holland. He had tried using darts from several players but when he tried Martin’s he hit a maximum and opted to use them in the match.

Despite the strange darts he still managed to notch two 180s and a 13-darter but was unable to catch the in-a-hurry 31-year-old Belgian.

De Vos made a dream start, taking the opening leg in 15 darts but then stole the throw in the next for a shock 2-0 lead. West grabbed the third and then the man who lives near Brussels missed four darts for the set as the seed piled on the pressure. Both players hit 180s in the deciding fifth leg but it was the man from Aalst in West Flanders who clinched double six for a 78 set winning finish.

Legs went with the throw in the next set including a 13-dart third leg from West who then fluffed chances to take the set in the fourth as the grateful De Vos leapt to finish on double tops. A maximum from West with his makeshift darts, gave him an impressive lead and he capitalised by firing in double 12 at the second attempt.

With the throwing advantage in the next set De Vos leapt into a 2-0 lead, aided by a maximum in the second leg and then cheekily clinched the set with a 99 checkout finished with two double tops.

His fourth successive leg gave him the opening leg of the fourth set against the throw and he then turned the screw clinching his favourite double tops for a 2-0 lead in the set, needing a single leg for a shock victory.

West delayed the agony firing out 137 and 100 scores as he exited on double four but the confident Belgian hit 140 and 121 to open up a lead but then missed two double tops, West missed double tops for a 108 finish and then three bids for double 10 as De Vos nailed double 10 for victory with his third double attempt.

It was case of the teacher and the pupil as the experienced 39-year-old much travelled Norris bullied the teenager – a 150/1 rank outsider - into submission in the 41-minute gripper.

Both players topped 30 plus per dart averages as Norris blasted in eight 180s while the teenager himself fired out three.

Norris blazed into the opening set, hitting three 180s in the first two legs, taking the throwing advantage from the Dutchman, including a 12-darter.

Van de Pas pinched the third but quick-throwing Norris nipped in for double 20 against the throw.

The teenager hit a maximum but then missed double 20 and then double 10 to steal the opening leg of the second set against the throw, Norris exiting on double 12 at third attempt. The following two legs went against the advantage and the fourth leg appeared to be heading in the same way as Norris powered in his fifth maximum but squandered darts for a double as the cool Dutchman fired in double 15 to level the match.

It was business-like Norris in the third set as he blasted out a two further maximums and a 11-dart checkout to open up a 2-0 lead, wiring double 10 for a set-winning 128, finishing it off with double five on his return to the oche to edge into a 2-1 match lead.

The opening four legs of the fourth set went with the throw after Norris missed double tops for a match-winning 106 checkout in the fourth leg. Chuck looked comfortable in the next but the brilliant young player from the Lowlands produced a match-saving 119 checkout finished on double tops.

Norris surged into the final set, hitting his 10th 180 and pulling off a pressure double 18 against the throw after the teenager tensed up and missed doubles. He defended his throw in the next but a maximum steered Van de Pas to the third leg.

It was nip and tuck in the next as Norris clinched victory with a 74 victory checkout, finished on double 20.

Both players hit a maximum in the opening set and despite a 13-darter from Jennings, both missed crucial doubles before Douglas snatched the deciding fifth leg against the throw with a show-stopping 121, finished on bull.

Jennings opened up a 2-0 lead in the next, left-hander Douglas blazing into the third leg with back-to-back 180s but then missing the all-important seventh 60 to set up a nine dart finish.
Jennings missed double eight for a set-winning 76 in the next, Douglas missing double 10 and then double five for a set-levelling finish. Jennings fired in double seven to level the match.

Jenno won the race to the double with the throw in the deciding fifth but wobbled on his finishing once again, missing double tops and double 10 but the Kent man was unable to put pressure on and the Hartlepool hot shot exited on double 10 with his second dart to open up a 2-1 match lead.

Fourth seed Robbie Green crashed sensationally 4-1 out of the tournament, short-circuited by the talented electrician Wesley Harms from the Netherlands.

Debutant Harms, a 28/1 outsider, followed up his dismissal of experienced Welsh international Martin Phillips, producing an electrifying performance to sweep aside the 14/1 sixth favourite in 46 minutes.

Sparky produced a 30.24 per dart average as he fired out an 11 and 12 darter and four 180s to topple Kong.

It was workmanlike performance from the fourth seed in the opening set as he santched the second leg against the throw, despite a 180 from Harms, who narrowly missed double 16 for 94. In the next Green missed double tops for a 120 to take the set, returning to the board to snap up double tops with his second dart.

But the Dutch newcomer threw down his gauntlet in the next exiting on 60 with the darts and then taking the second against the throw with double eight, coolly hitting the same double in the next to level the match.

Harm stormed into the third set hitting 180, 140, 145 but missing double 18 for a 11 darter, eventually taking the opening leg against the throw with his fifth double, adding the next with 12 darts after narrowly missing double 16 for a 132 finish after hitting double bullseyes. He romped to the third, including a 180 to take a 2-1 match lead.

An 11-darter, including his fourth 180, paved the way for a 3-2 success in the fourth set for the remarkable Dutchman after Kong missed double 16 for what would have been a crucial 112 finish in the third leg.

Defending champ Martin Adams delivered a superclass in darts, pile-driving Scots fence erector Gary Stone out of the championship 4-0.

It took Adams the joint favourite 44-minutes to dismiss the playoff qualifier and move into the last eight.

Adams is bidding to equal Eric Bristow’s three-in-a-row success achieved between 1984-86, the only player to record three successive title wins in the championship.

Wolfie was steady, consistent ,dependable but pressurised when it was needed. It was the kind of bullying that Adams had referred to after his opening round victory over Scott Mitchell.

And it was the same bullying tactics employed by the great Crafty Cockney in his heyday to flatten his opponents.

Experience has taught the 55-year-old Peterborough grandfather how to graft , not get flustered and let your opponents do the worrying.

He bullied his way through the opening set taking the third leg against the throw and then holding his throw in the next after the Scot missed two attempts for double 16 to lay out his intention, just as a wolf will mark out its territory...

Stone hit a 180 in the opening leg of the second set but Adams matched it and exited on 85, adding second maximum to take the third leg, the Scot taking the match into a deciding fifth leg after hitting double 20 with his second dart. Wolfie hit his third maximum of the set to motor ahead and finish on 13 for a 2-0 match lead.

Stone took the opening leg of the third with the throw and unleashed a 180 but was bullied into submission with a faultless 102 checkout from Adams who followed up exiting on 76 against the throw. Stoney missed bull for a 161 finish but recovered to exit on 25 to level.

Bespectacled Stone stepped up the pressure with a 180 in the deciding fifth leg, missed double tops for 78 and three further attempts for double 10 as Wolfie screamed in with 74 completed on double 16 to leave the man from Larkhall pondering on what might have been.

Adams hit his favourite double 16 with the throw to start the fourth set, Stone sweeping back to take out 120 on double tops and then in the next he missed tops for 110, a further dart for double tops and two thwarted attempts for double 10. Adams nipped in to finish on double 10.

The world champ held his nerve in the next to power in the killer double – his favourite double tops.

Delighted Adams said after his victory: “I am still on course to win three titles on the spin. Only one other player has done that – Eric Bristow.

“I want to equal his record and then perhaps I can try to get four on the trot,” declared Wolfie, who confirmed that he had the longest winning sequence in the tournament since the Crafty Cockney back in the 1980s.

The England skipper said that preparation for this year was no different from the past two years.

“Same thing but on a different day,” he smiled

With 99 years of experience on the stage, the clash between between the eighth (O’Shea) and ninth (Montgomery) seeds and the spice of an England versus Scotland clash, the ingredients were there for a tasty encounter.

Montgomery added his own blend of ingredient entertaining the capacity Lakeside venue with an impromptu spell of dancing to his theme music, sporting a new pair of eye-catching white spectacles but he was crushed into submission by Silverback.

The opening set went with the throw to O’Shea, the Stockport sharpshooter then snatched the opening leg of the second set against the throw and then defended his throw, Montgomery missing bull for an 86 finish but recovering to exit on double eight after Silverback missed doubles. The Cheshire ace held his throw in the fourth leg to move ominously 2-0 ahead.

O’Shea surged through the third set unchallenged firing out a couple of 180s and an 81 finish completed on bull to extend his match lead.

And then in the fourth he fought back from 1-0 down to level and jettison a 102 leg winning checkout finished on double tops. The Scot leapt in to exit on double six after Silverback failed to clinch a match-winning 141. And then the former American footballer with the Glasgow Diamonds touched down with 96, finished on double nine to pull back a set.

In the fifth Montgomery hit double tops for an eye-catching 120 finish, O’Shea replying with a 104 checkout finished on double 16, adding a 92 finish completed with bull in the next to move within one leg of victory.

Leaving himself on 36, O’Shea agonised as the Scot, who needed 160 hit the two 60s, Montgomery breaking into a broad smile as his third dart failed to find double tops. Silverback fired in double 18 with his first dart.

The Dutchman staged a massive comeback from 3-0 down, pulling back to 3-2, Atkins scrambling through on his favourite double tops.

“I thought of the game three years ago when I missed a double to win 4-0 and went out. Willy is such a good player. I got to 3-0 by the skin of my teeth and then he started to come back at me and I thought, oh no, not again!

“But I have broken my duck. This is the furthest I have been in the tournament, I never did anything as a seed. Perhaps next year I should come back as a qualifier!”

The Assassin found his range in the opening set unleashing a volley of precision doubles for a 3-0 success against the throwing advantage.

A maximum steered the Dutchman into a 2-0 in the next and despite his second maximum he conceded the third leg, Atkins himself hitting a maximum in the fourth. Van de Wiel notched his third 180 of the set but confident Atkins replied with a 137 and moved into a 2-0 match lead with an 88 finish, completed on double seven.

“Free Willy” missed bull for a 90 finish in the opening leg of the next set, Atkins swooping to pick off double eight and then on target with a maximum in the next as he moved 2-0 ahead in the set. The Leeds man captured his sixth successive leg for a surprise 3-0 match lead over the 10th seed.

Twice Atkins had darts for doubles in the opening legs of the fourth set, double 10 for the first and then double 2-0 for a 117 finish, Van de Wiel capturing both with double 16. Atkins raced to the third, exiting on 136 with double 16 but the Dutchman replied with a maximum and clinched the set on his favourite double 16.

Van de Wiel suffered more double trouble in the opening leg of the fifth set but pounced after Atkins fluffed bull for 83 and then the Yorkshireman missed double tops for 151, the man in orange nipping out on double four.

Atkins coasted to double 20, taking the match into a fifth leg and Atkins seized the initiative with a maximum but Van de Wiel pinched the set with 70, completed on that double 16, pulling the score back to 3-2.

As the Dutchman grimaced and constantly chastised his flyaway darts, Atkins defended his throw in the opening leg of the sixth set, missed double 10 for a showpiece 120 exit in the next, recovering to hit double 10 and a 2-0 set lead. Van de Wiel missed double 14 for a match-saving 107 in the third leg, Atkins - who had left 40 after hitting 138 - made no mistake this time to end the gripping 50-minute encounter

Both players served up some tasty darts in the opening set, fast-throwing Waites surging into a 2-0 lead but then missing two darts for the set in the third as The Count nailed double 10. Hankey swooped to notch a brace of 180s to level. Waites agonised as he missed a further five doubles for the set, Hankey pouncing for a set-winning checkout against the throw, with double five.

Hankey drilled in his fifth maximum to take the opening leg of the second set but costly bull misses for 121 and 90 in the following legs let in Waites for a 2-1 lead and despite missing double 16 for 86 and a further five doubles, he levelled the match with double two.

Remarkably the Halifax player missed 11 darts as he moved into a 2-1 lead with the throw in the next including a 100 checkout, finished with single 20, two double tops. He held his nerve in the next after Hankey failed to exit on 76, taking 2-1 match lead with double 18.

The crucial fourth set saw the Count edge 2-0 in front but it was Waite who clinched the third against the throw and the fourth after missing two doubles before grabbing double five. In the deciding fifth leg the Telford player missed 66 for double tops, Waites missing double 18 and then double nine for a set winning 50. Not believing his luck Hankey missed two double and gratefully slotted the third in double five to level the match.

The fifth also went the full distance, both players still trying to reproduce their best form, Waites hitting the solitary 180 and then missing tops for 120, Hankey repeating the feat and watching on helpless as the Halifax man exited on double 10.

The Count fired in a maximum and 12-darter at the start of a 3-0 rout in the sixth set to plunge the match into a nail-biting deciding set.

And then he added his fourth successive leg, taking the throwing advantage in the seventh set, nervously missing three double attempts before striking double 10 to move within a leg of victory. As Waites grimaced and snatched his darts, Hankey fluffed five match-winning doubles, the gritty Yorkshireman scrambling to double four.

A fallen dart in the next leg failed to deter Hankey as he eyed up a place in the last eight, producing a match-winning 144 checkout finished on double 12.

Dutch roadworker Christian Kist won the battle of Benelux, steamrolling Belgian Geert de Vos 4-2 to reach the quarter finals in his first championship.

It took the fast-throwing confident newcomer to world darts just 54 minutes to win through to the last eight and further reduce his betting odds. He started the week as a 66/1 outsider and saw his odds reduced to 12/1 after toppling fellow countryman and sixth seed Jan Dekker in his opener.

And he produced a sky-high standard, finishing the match with a 32.17 per dart average, firing out two 12 and four 13 dart checkouts as he battled back from 2-1 down.

A man of few words he said after the match: “I am very happy and my girlfriend Kirsten is very happy. That game was harder than my first match.”

He took the opening set against the throw unchallenged, including two 13 darters but the Belg raced back to take the next two, which went the distance.

The Dutchman replied by taking the fourth and fifth legs including 12 and 13 darters, including a 92 checkout.

With the momentum behind him, Kist had clear road in the match-winning sixth set, which included a brace of 180s and 14 and 13 dart checkouts.

Quote:

Battling Alan Norris provided one of the great Lakeside comebacks to topple Frimley Green favourite and third seed Dean Winstanley 4-3 in a 63-minute

Remarkably, the 39-year-old stockily-built Somerset-born sharpshooter had been playing darts for more than 14 hours!

Although focused Norris had been practising since 7.30am and didn’t start his match until 9.38pm he showed no signs of tiredness as he put in a terrier-like challenge, repeatedly pressurising the third seed, battling back from 3-1 down.

Nice guy Winstanley, who retained a beaming smile on his face throughout the match and even after defeat had notched seven maximums and a 30.64 average as he dipped out.

He signalled his intentions in the first leg, narrowly missing bull for the game’s highest checkout -170. He took the leg and five of the next six to open up a solid 2-0 match lead.

Norris led the third 2-0 despite a 180 from Deano, who then followed up with a further maximum to pull back a leg, the Doncaster man then swooping to take double five after Norris failed to nail double 16 for a 143 set-winning finish. Yeovil-born Norris held his nerve to clinch double nine to pull the match back to 2-1.

The opening legs of the fourth set went against the throwing advantage, the next two going with the darts , Winstanley missing two attempts at double tops for the set. But he made amends in the next, clinching 94 with double six.

Norris motored into the fifth set, taking the opening leg with 130 finished on bull, Winstanley hitting his sixth 180 as he levelled the set. Norris, with the throw, held his nerve in the fifth leg driving in 86 completed on double 16 to pull the match back to 3-2.

Punishing a lack-lustre spell from the South Yorkshire player, Norris swept through the sixth set unchallenged and finished off with an eye-catching 100 checkout.

Norris, with the throwing advantage, took the opening leg of the deciding seventh set with double 12, amazingly the first time he had led the match. Winstanley defended his throw and Norris replied with a maximum and a 116 finished on double tops.

Another maximum followed a leg later, adding 140 and then Norris clinched victory coolly clinching victory with 84, finished on double 12 to capture the scalp of the ninth seed of the week.

Tournament sensation and Dutch electrician Wesley Harms continued to shock as he fused Paul Jennings title aspirations 5-3, to coast into the semi finals.

But the 13th seed was made to fight all the way by the Hartlepool hotshot who just didn’t know when to give up in the 88-minute clash.

Harms from north west Holland, who started the tournament as a 50/1 outsider had his odds slashed to 10/1 before the game and now they are likely to be further revised.

The opening sets went with the throw, although Harms after hitting a maximum in the deciding leg of the first set missed two darts to finish 58 and then in his next throw he bust 20, which would have given him the advantage.

After the opening legs of the second set went with the throw the Dutchman pounced to take the third on double tops. He raced into a commanding lead in the fourth but needed eight double attempts and double one to clinch the set.

Jenno seized the initiative in the next opening up a 2-0 lead, against the throw, Sparky clinching the third in 13 darts but then missing double 14 for a set-levelling 121 checkout as Jennnings coolly fired in double 19 to level the match with a 115 finish.

A 15-darter paved the way for a 3-0 rout for the Dutchman in the fifth for a 3-2 match lead, who then turned the power up to hit consecutive doubles (five and 15) after he missed double tops with his first dart to lead the set 2-1.

Sparky fired in a spectacular 107 checkout, finished on double 16, sending the orange-clad supporters in the crowd into fits of ecstasy as he took control of the match with a 4-2 interval lead.

He stole the opening leg of the sixth with a 15 dart checkout but then bust an attempt to take the next with 98, Jennings nipping in to exit on double tops, repeating the feat in the next leg against the throw. He held his nerve in the tense fourth to smash in an 11-dart checkout to pull back a set.

The opening three legs of the eighth set went with the darts, Jennings hitting a mere 27 as he suffered a bounce-out in the crucial leg, Harms powering in a 133, which left him 59. A single 19 left him his favourite double tops but nerves forced the dart below the double ring as he confidently steered his third dart into the match-winning double 10 for a place in the last four.

Stockport’s eight seed Tony O’Shea ended defending champion Martin Adams’ hopes of a record-equalling third successive world title, dumping him out 5-2.

Adams, top seed and 2/1 title favourite never settled in the clash between darts two elder statesmen – both in their 50s and both grandfathers – as they battled for a place in the last four in the 63-minute encounter.

Silverback’s victory ends near three-year unbeaten spell at Frimley Green for the England skipper and newly appointed BDO director.

He had suffered a pre-match scare when one of the lens dropped out of his only set of glasses. He managed to replace and tighten the frame in time for the match start.

The defending champ dropped his first set of the week as Silverback powered in two maximums and clinched the fourth leg on double six, Adams having missing double tops for a 117 finish in the previous leg for the opening set.

Despite a second maximum from Wolfie, rampant O’Shea clinched victory in the second with a three dart 81 finish to edge into a surprise 2-0 lead.

Taking the opening leg of the third set with his favourite double 16, O’Shea fired out a maximum but was stunned when the defending champ pulled off a 161, finished on bull to put himself in line for the £3000 highest checkout award. Silverback replied taking the third leg against the throw on double 16.

But not to be outdone Wolfie sent his fans into howls of excitement as he nailed 118 finished with double tops to pull back a set.

O’Shea took the opening leg of the fourth with the throw, Adams missing double tops for 160 and the Stockport man immediately producing the game’s top finish of 170 to steal Adams’ prizemoney for the top shot-out but more importantly move 2-0 ahead in the set. Wolfie missed double 16 for a set-saving 56, the eighth seed pouncing to finish the same required score on double tops for a 3-1 match lead.

Adams is renowned for being a scrapper and he surged through the fifth set unchallenged but O’Shea notched another maximum to defend his throw in the opening leg of the next set and pouncing for double 16 after Adams missed four attempts for doubles. With Adams trailing in the next the Cheshire county player exited on double 16 with his third dart for a comfortable 4-2 match lead.

He rushed into the seventh set, hitting a maximum and notching a two dart 81 finish completed on double 12 against the throw, stunned Adams watching on is disbelief. In the next Wolfie missed tops for 80 and O’Shea again jumped in to exit on double 10.

Adams defended his throw in the third leg, nervously needing four darts but Silverback swept in his third 180 of the set to set up a memorable 52 checkout, completed on his favourite double 16.

Russian Anastasia Dobromyslova was crowned champion of the world for a second time after toppling top seed Deta Hedman 2-1.

The 27-year-old had to comeback from losing the opening set against the throw and finished the final with a 90 checkout finished on bull, ending the 46 minute encounter.

The East European practised with men’s quarter finalist Alan Norris ahead of the final, adding the title she won back in 2008.

But for Hedman will be the memory of miscounting in the second set, losing the throwing advantage to the former champ.

Dobromyslova won the race to the double in the first leg, with the throw but suffered final jitters, finally exiting on double five after Hedman powered in 118 to pressure the shot. The Russian had the chance to extend her lead after Hedman missed a bull finish but missed three doubles, the Witham ace shooting out on double nine.

Hedman powered in a 125 to take the advantage in the next leaving herself 25 but hitting treble five but recovering to clinch double three and a 2-1 lead against the throw. She missed bull for an 86 set winner in the next, the Russian pouncing to capture double 10, against the throw to level the set.

With both players giving each other the utmost respect the big scores were missing as the two protagonists vied for supremacy, the Ellesmere Port player missing four attempts for double tops and one for double 10 to defend the throwing advantage.

Needing 82, Hedman hit single 11 but recovered brilliantly with treble 13 and pierced the double 16 for a set-winning 82 checkout – against the advantage.

She blasted in a maximum in the opening leg of the second set and powered in double 18 after former world champ failed to finish 141. The Russian set the pace in the next but missed two double 16s, Hedman missing bull for a 122 checkout, Dobromyslova missing a further three doubles. The Essex player miss double eight and then double four, the confident Russian wading in to level the set on double four.

In the third with 42 left Hedman threw for double 16 thinking she needed 32, realising her mistake and missing the remaining double 13, her opponent seizing the opportunity to take a 2-1 set lead against the throw, turning to acknowledge her husband in the crowd.

But Hedman recovered immediately to hit a two-dart 100 checkout to steal the fourth and nullify her opponent’s previous leg, Dobromyslova missing tops for a 120 but having time to exit on double five.

Both players missed doubles to take the crucial opening leg of the third set, the former champ holding her throw to finish on double eight. Hedman fluffed bull for 84 in the next as the Russian made no mistake with double tops for a 78 checkout clinching the impressive silver trophy and the £10,000 first prize.

Afterwards she wiped away the tears of emotion and said: “I never give up, that is my problem. I have a lot of respect for Deta and did think after beating her, oh not again! It was hard playing against my friend. When I got back to 1-1 it gave me a break.

“I cannot describe what it means winning the world title again, it’s just amazing.

“I could have split the shot at the end but went for the bull because Deta was not far behind, so I just had to take it,” said the jubilant champion.

Tournament sensation and road worker Christian Kist continued his giant-killing to drive out fancied Alan Norris 5-1.

Norris who had floored third seed Dean Winstanley in the second round simply had nothing in his extensive armoury to cope with the robotic Kist, who showed no trace of tension in his first quarter final appearance in his debut tournament.

Yeovil-born Norris blasted in nine maximums in the 46-minute game and recorded a 30 plus average but simply could not match the firepower of the new kid on the block.

The two fast throwing players, who are good friends off the oche, set an amazingly quick pace in a match that had almost everything – including a nine darter...

The flying Dutchman swooped into the match capturing the first set against the throw unchallenged with a show-stopping 110 checkout finished on double 18. He wrapped up the second set by the same score with only 12 minutes play, clinching the winning leg with a 120 finish, completed on double tops.

And Kist had four darts to make it 3-0, Norris nipping in for a sparkling 11 dart checkout finished on double 16 and then he took the opening leg of the fourth against the throw after the Dutch road worker motored into the leg with back-to-back 180s but missed the crucial seventh to set up a possible nine darter.

Kist scrambled to the next leg after missing doubles, Chuck blazing into the third with seven consecutive 60s, striking a perfect treble 19 but agonising as the ninth finished outside double 12 for what would have been the perfect game. Double trouble saw him gift the leg to Kist who hit 96, finished on double 18. Both players hit 180s in the next, Kist hitting a two-dart 47 to restore a two set lead at 3-1.

Norris sped into a 2-0 lead in the fifth, Kist replying with 121 finished on bull, 98 on double 12 in the next and then in the deciding fifth leg against the throw he grabbed double 18 after Norris missed bull for 121 for the set.

Norris fired out a further maximum in the opening leg of the sixth but grimaced as he missed bull for 125, cool Kist picking off 54 on double tops. Despite another 180 from Norris in the next, the astonishing Dutchman exited on double eight, wrapping up the match with a two-dart 60 checkout, completed on double tops in the next leg.

Super Ted Hankey edged into the last four after toppling Martin Atkins 5-1 in a scrappy 58-minute quarter final encounter.

Neither player managed to reach the heights of their game, struggling to find the treble 20 bed and missing countless doubles.

But the double world champion and 15th seed from Telford was able to call on his vast experience at Frimley Green to peg back The Assassin who simply lacked the firepower.

The legs went with the throw in the opening set, Hankey missing bull for a blockbusting 170 checkout, finally exiting on double three.

The opening four legs of the second set went with the throw, both players missing to take the advantage. In the deciding fifth leg Hankey reached the double first but missed double two and one with Atkins also missing opportunities before The Count hit appropriately the “mad house” – double one for a 2-0 match lead.

In a scrappy third set Hankey hit a maximum as he annexed three of the four legs, winning the set on 52, finished on double 20 after both players struggled to find consistency on the 60 bed.

Twice The Count led in the next set after stealing the throw in the opening leg with a 90 finish completed with double 10. He fired a 180 and 41 checkout for the 11 dart third leg and followed p with double five after Atkins failed with a bull shot for a set-winning 121.

The Shropshire player blazed into the opening leg of the fifth with a 180, following up with double 10 only to see the gritty Yorkshireman annex the next three as he hit a brace of maximums, driving the stake into The Count to pull a set back.

Hankey stole the opening leg of the sixth against the throw after Atkins missed double tops for 109, The Count hitting a maximum and clinching double 10 for the second leg.

He wrapped up the match with a 64, finished on double eight to sweep into the last four.

Afterwards the double world champ admitted: “I played absolute garbage, terrible and need to go away and learn how to play darts overnight or Christian will destroy me.”

Christian Kist battled back from the brink to beat Ted Hankey 6-5 and reach the BDO World Championship final.

Kist began the stronger, taking a 2-1 lead before Hankey found his rhythm and stormed into lead 5-3 at the Lakeside.

But when Hankey narrowly missed hitting the bull for the match at 5-4, Kist seized the opportunity and levelled the match at 5-5.

Hankey then lost his concentration as he appeared to complain about a draft, leaving Kist to coast to victory

Dutchman Kist will face either 2009 Lakeside finalist Tony O'Shea or Wesley Harms in his first World Championship final.

Hankey, the number 15 seed who has won the tournament on two previous occasions, looked to have the match won when he clinched the eighth set to lead 5-3.

Kist won the next set to reduce the deficit to 5-4 but Hankey had a chance to win the match by hitting the bull, only for his dart to land the wrong side of the wire.

The Dutchman stole the set to level the match before completing an unlikely victory as Hankey appeared to give up after he appeared to say that a draft had put him off.

Quote:

Tony O’Shea justified his 13/8 favourite’s tag, scrambling through a tense 11-set clash to win through to the final, shocking Dutch electrician Wesley Harms into a 6-5 submission.

But Sparky, the battling Dutch sharpshooter made a whole legion of new fans with his never-say-die effort to try to make it an all-Dutch final, the 13th seeding proving unlucky on this occasion against veteran chucker O’Shea.

Remarkably the Stockport player suffered more than 10 bounce outs, which prompted a board change during the 92-minute game.

Both players missed doubles in the tense opening set of the clash as Harms fluffed double tops for 64 to move into a match lead, O’Shea blazing back with a maximum and double tops outshot to steal the advantage.

Harms wasted no time taking all three legs in the second set, hitting a 180 and clinching the match-levelling 81 checkout on bull to level.

The opening three legs of the next set went with the throwing advantage, Silverback swinging in to clinch a 2-1 match lead, capturing the fourth leg against the throw.

Sparky led 2-0 in the fourth set, O’Shea unleashing a 12-darter but missed double 18 and then double nine for a set-saving 66 checkout. Harms who had missed doubles scrambled to double one to level the match at 2-2.

Legs went with the throw in the fifth set, O’Shea taking the third against the throw with double 10. He then missed bull for a 164 set-winning finish, Harms coolly levelling with 62, finished on double 16 and holding his nerve to finish off 72 on double 16 again in the deciding fifth leg, easing into a 3-2 match lead.

In the see-saw encounter the Stockport sharpshooter took the opening two legs of the sixth set with double 16 but then miscounted for a 120 finish, recovering to exit on double two after Harms missed double 10, levelling the match for the third time.

The opening legs of the seventh set went against the advantage, Sparky taking the third with the throw, finishing 52 on double 16 after O’Shea struggled with his scoring, He defended his throw in the next, as Harms sneaked home in the deciding leg clinching double eight after Silverback failed to finish off 102.

Silverback swept through the eighth unchallenged, hitting a maximum in the third and clinching a 100 finish to level the match at 4-4.

The opening four legs of the ninth set went with the throw, Harms finishing on 90 while O’Shea replied with 103 and 121 checkouts, Silverback coolly clinching the set with a two dart 71 completed on double 16.

But the Cheshire player who seemed to blow hot and cold trailed in the next 2-0 as lacklustre scoring allowed Harms to steal the initiative and take the set 3-1 to level the match at 5-5.

Play was suspended following the set after O’Shea complained about a draught blowing across the stage – caused by air conditioning in the club. It was also agreed with both players to change the board after O’Shea had suffered 13 bounce outs.

On the return for a sudden death deciding set, both players missed doubles, the grandfather from Stockport easing to double eight. He missed a nerve-wracking six doubles in the next before scrambling to the same double after Harms missed double 12 for 98 to level.

Harms nipped in for the third with double two, O’Shea taking victory on double 10 in the fourth leg after the young Dutchman missed double tops for a match-saving 76 finish, tears welling up in his eyes as he celebrated.

Afterwards O’Shea said: “It is unbelievable, I am so overwhelmed. That young lad (Wesley) has got a great future. It was he who suggested that we change the board because I had suffered so many bounce-outs. He is a real gentleman.

“The draught affected us both. I threw two darts and one went right and the other went left,” said O’Shea.

Defeated Harms admitted: “It was a great game, I gave away the last set. Losing hurts a little bit because the first leg I missed darts to get that leg but I am proud I reached the semi finals.”
