Batten down the hatches (it's Hurricane Bawbag)!

It's starting to get windy ... very windy. Schools here are closing at lunchtime on the assumption that the worst of the weather is due in the afternoon, but this storm looks like its coming in quicker than forecast. Central Scotland (where I am) has a Met Office red alert out for the wind at the moment.

If I'm feeling psychotic I might go and try to get some wild photos later today.

Anyone else feeling the effects yet? How far south into England have folks been warned to prepare for a battering?

No its not too bad down here yet as the wind is not really blowing that much at the moment.

The weather app on my new phone is insisting that it is a bright sunny day and yet it's wildly windy and raining at the moment..and of course this was the morning I chose for the hairdressers.

Oldham is always windy, imagine building a town centre on the top of a hill.
It's been really grim for a few days what with winds that blow you off your feet, sleet, rain and freezing cold. Roll on the snow.... :dunce:

I think as far south as Plymouth you're probably going to get away with it. However, right here, in a forest clearing in central Scotland, the noise of the wind is quite something, I can tell you.
EDIT
I typed that out at 10am ... Just as the power went off. My iPad has helpfully submitted it as soon as our interwebs came back on with the leccy.

SSE Landrovers have just passed the window even though the power's been on a few minutes now - looks like they have some proper damage to fix. Ah, rural living. :D

We're in an elevated position up on the northern tip of the sandstone ridge in Cheshire and it's getting a bit wild and nasty out there now after a relatively calm morning.

My nephew commutes from Edinburgh to East Lothian and he's been told to stay at home today.

Winds seem to be getting stronger now in Glasgow I hope my TV is ok tonight as we have a freesat dish. Never seen anything like this since 1969. Was that the January gales? I remember an old neighbour getting blown off her feet at the corner of our street. I stayed in East Kilbride at the time and the place was littered with trees and fences the next day.

There was quite a few people killed in Glasgow. My Mum knew a Woman who was kille when the chimney collapsed through the roof in her tenement.... think it was Dalmarnock road but might be my childhood memory playing tricks.

Most of Glagow looked the same to me in those days :)

Yes The old buildings caused a lot of problems. Anyone coming back to Glasgow now would not even find their street. Like all cities they change so much, for the better I suppose,

The sort of extreme weather caused by climate change is exactly the reason we need the wind turbines.

Lucky you weren't further north in the red alert zone then.

Our house still has no power, which means it's almost certainly going to be well into tomorrow before it does.

Still, we've gone 48 hours without leccy before now and our super duper fridge and freezer both cope with it very well. Asda delivered our Christmas meats just before we abandoned the house so they are currently freezing down nicely at the in-laws' house ... Where we are all about to spend a second night in exile.

Can anyone recommend a good brand of emergency generator? This is happening to us rather too often. I need one with enough output to run the central heating stove (auger, fans and water pump), the fridge and freezer so we don't have to leave them shut for the duration, and ideally a little left over to run an iMac and a BT Homehub.

Our house still has no power, which means it's almost certainly going to be well into tomorrow before it does.

Still, we've gone 48 hours without leccy before now and our super duper fridge and freezer both cope with it very well. You would probably need up to about 10KW to be comfortable. For a Honda engine petrol unit with electric start and enough capacity you're looking at about 2-2.5 grand for a new one. I would be wary of secondhand ones from ebay or the classifieds and even some of the old MOD surplus stuff because they do go wrong they'll end up causing you more problems than they solve.

I'm not looking for something to run the whole house off ... I'll need to look up the rating plates when I get home, but the demand from the stove is not high, well south of 500W IIRC. With the rest of it thrown in I would hope to get away with generating less than 2kW. We can do without lights, showers and the cooker.

What kind of stove is it?

...sorry I've just re-read your post (been a long week!) I had envisaged some kind of electric stove requiring a 30A outlet supping lots of juice and a separate electric heater but I guess you have an all-in-one unit. I have a couple of generators here: Honda EU20i which is the 2KVa model in their portable suitcase range and a 1KVa Clarke which is basically a re-badged Kipor generator made in China and a blatant attempt at cloning the EU10. For half the price of the equivalent Honda models I really can't say anything bad about the Clarke, ok it's a bit louder and sounds a tad unrefined when it's running close to idle in economy mode but the power delivery is consistent and I've never had any problems powering a laptop, radio equipment and TV so I would imagine that the 2KVa version under whatever guise it's badged is equally acceptable for less than 400 quid.

It's a biomass stove, burning compressed wood pellets. It has an electric element for ignition, but even at that stage the demand is under a kilowatt. Thereafter the power demand is from the central heating pump, fans and the fuel-delivery auger.

I'll look out for the Clarke brand. Presumably you would warn against the sub-£300 bargains sold by the likes of B&Q?

I would most defintely give any of those cheaper frame generators and such like from the DIY chains a very wide berth and certainly wouldn't plug any sensitive electronics into them. The Clarke generators you will also see badged-up with the Kipor brand name with a model number prefix of "IG" followed by the VA rating. This is the cheapest I've found the 2.2KVa model:

Hyundai also do a decent line of inverter generators which come somewhere between this price point and the genuine Hondas, certainly worth a look.

I've already bet 10p that it won't be a white Xmas this year. and I've cancelled the rock salt delivery.

does anyone have youtube clips or similiar of the rough seas in scotland last week? that pic on the sky site I like, I love watching rough seas.

I have a clip of Loch Lomond which I'll try to upload later. The water doesn't pile up in the same way as it does on the sea but it's still pretty wild.

How stupid can l get as l just looked at it and thought it was a picture:dozey::dunce: and l have just checked it again and it plays fine but it was certainly was a day to stay in keep warm and on bad weather my relatives certainly remember the winter last year as they had some truly terrible weather in Perth which seemed to last for a eternity.

There's more to come, according to the BBC. The Atlantic pressure charts for tomorrow and Thursday/Friday are looking pretty hairy. At the moment it looks like the high winds are tracking further south than they did last time as well.

Back in 1986 I spent 2 nights in a tent on the shores of Lock Lomond, and it wasn't that bad.

Unsurprisingly, it doesn't blow a gale every day of the week here. You would have been very unlucky to have had weather as bad as this when you visited. ;)
