Well how couldn't they be? They are the only provider with 100mb. At least until BT bring out their 300mb next year.

Edit: Oops sorry, I thought you were talking about VM, not Sky.

Well I think one thing being a Virginmedia customer has taught a lot of people is.....

Hitting 50mb on Speedtest.net does not mean you have a usable high quality internet connection. It just means you can hit 50mb on Speedtest.net.

Sky fanboy?

Ok , I have Sky for TV, I have VM internet and I have BT ADSL internet how would that make me a fanboy?

By the way how do you decide which words you're going to put a capital letter at the beggining? Or is it random?

Names and places should always have a capital letter. By the way Sky internet is just a pants as VM's but BT really has a quality service. Yes I am a BT fanboy as they are giving me Infinity very soon.

I'm lucky to hit 70mb, and I'm supposed to have 100.

And what do VM say about it?

---------- Post added at 12:48 ---------- Previous post was at 12:44 ----------

I had a VM engineer come out this moring. He said that there is a fault, but it isn't with my modem, and it isn't the cable between my house and the box in the street. But it is somewhere else on the network. So he is reporting it.

Well as long as they do fix it, then it should push my speeds up to much closer to the 100mb that it should be. And it should also stop outages.

I was also told that very few outages are actually displayed by VM. So don't take their word that there isn't a network problem, if tech support try telling you that.

They can only report a problem once it has been passed to networks and they are in the process of investigating the problem, a power outage or total loss due to network plant is easy to find and report, intermitent problems that may not come to light until a number of customers have reported problems and had visits from service can take a while to be reported/fixed.

So there is no conspiracy of VM not reporting faults to make them look better

I didn't say there was.

On many occasions over the years I have been told that there is no fault in my area. So I have then had to wait in for an engineer (because tech support said it must be a problem with my modem), only to be told by the engineer that it is a problem with the network in my area.

All I am saying is that there should be a system to log faults that are grouped in areas. So that if lets say I am the third person in my area to report a problem, then the operator could tell me that there have been other reports, and it will therefore be investigated.

Instead I had someone in an overseas call centre telling me:
  1. They can't help me because I pay extra to get the 100mb service
  2. There isn't a fault in my area
  3. An engineer will have to come out in 4 days, so I'll have to wait in

This already happens, we have a Outage Surveillance Team that look for things like that all day/night. The problem comes when only 1 or 2 people report a fault, as is likely with 100mb.

1st line can check if there are SNR/FEC or utilisation problems with your CMTS/Cable and escalate to that team too.

Other times the customer is adamant that they have a single user issue and 1st line will leave notes to that effect, so no further action is taken until the service engineer visits.

In my eyes the best bit about Virgin Media is its broadband!

Well correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't 50mb and 100mb use the same cable??

Still may only be a few on a particular cable upstream.

So there was no real reason why technical support couldn't have helped me then.

I have actually had this confirmed by someone in the 100mb team.
