Formula 1 2012 Pre-Season

Lets start discussion for next years 2012 season.

There's a few changes with Team lotus becoming Caterham and the Marussia Virgin team dropping the virgin name and no blown diffusers either next year.

I wonder if Rubens will retire and whether Torro Rosso will have a complete new lineup?

denphone 27-11-2011 18:23

Re: Formula 1 2012 Pre-Season

Obviously several questions in my mind and the first is how much difference will not having no blown diffusers make next year and the other question is can McLaren close the gap next year on Red Bull.

It will be a rather pointless exercise next year because unless you are mug enough to subscribe to SKY Sports a service you do not want in or to subscribe to SKY F1 or whatever they will call it you will only get to see one race per month.

Another issue will be if SKY allow Virgin Media access to the channel at the start as it will be dependent on the outcome of any negotiations with regards to showing the channel.

I fully expect the BBC to find that it is not cost effective to carry on with its coverage and for SKY to take all of the races at which time commercial breaks will no doubt appear and probably at vital moments.

If the is a free streaming service maybe that will be the answer to continued viewing as I will not pay to watch it.

The difference is I and many other people do not watch football or golf so it would be a rather expensive and pointless upgrade in order to then pay more to then watch an extra race per month.

I would rather find a channel online streaming F1 for free.

Exactly so many people will no longer see these races due to the cost involved especially for channels they will never watch.

Nothing different in that press release to the one Virgin issued with regards to Sky Atlantic as just to say they are in talks but whether we will get it in HD is another matter.

THe changes that need to be made for next year (although they have tried to do this in the past), is to close the gaps between the different teams.

It seems that this year there was a clear order as to which teams had the best cars:
  1. Redbull by a mile. I don't believe they had the best drivers, but as far as the cars go, other teams couldn't come close.
  2. Mclaren are still way behind Redbull, but only managed to stop an even wider gap by having far superior drivers (even if Lewis does occasionally push his luck)
  3. Ferarri probably aren't that far behind Mclaren, but their drivers are. This showed when Lewis came to Mclaren and showed him how to drive.
  4. Mercedes. It was unlikely that they would be able to maintain their form that they showed in their first year as Brawn GP. But they are still hanging in there. I think they could probably do better if they didn't have a driver who used to be great, but is now more of a has been.
  5. Renault are bringing up the rear of the top teams, but will have to watch out for Force India snapping at their heels.

I can't see it making any difference. They are still in F1, and Bernie is still the owner.

Bernie had nothing to do with FOTA in fact all the teams together had the effect of blocking Bernie on a few issues like the mid-season banning of blown diffusers.. The only reason why the two teams have dropped FOTA is that they're probably peeved off with not keeping blown diffusers

Kimi Räikkönen had his first seat fitting at Lotus Renault today.
Quote:

The last time I was at Enstone I quickly jumped into a seat, but this is indeed the first time I have properly sat in an F1 car with a helmet on since the last race of 2009. It felt a bit odd at first because the cockpit seems a bit small, but that’s normal. It’s just like in the past when I have done seat fittings – it feels a bit strange when you first step into the car but you quickly adjust. It will be nice to get back to racing.

I'm pleased that Bruno has joined Williams, but hope Rubens finds a new team for 2012. I've been a fan of his for years, even though he was never a title challenger.

To me I have always felt all along, that Fernando Alonso is one of the most spineless, cowardly, egotistical, and insecure drivers in the history of motorsports racing and there are many many times in the last 6 or 7 years where he has shown those qualities in abundance.

Never liked Alonso, my own viewpoint is that he's an arrogant little dummy spitter.

As far as Ruben's I'd had thought he would have retired at the end of last season, he's had a good run but should allow the younger drivers to come up into a spot he's taking up. He'll very easily grab a spot in the media as he's a really likeable chap.

"We're excited. I'm sure every team is a little apprehensive," Button said.

Among other notable features, the car does not have the platypus-style nose that is expected to feature on many designs this year as a result of a change in the rules requiring a lower nose height.

It's what caused the argument between Renualt Lotus (which is part owned by the Lotus Grp after the naming permissions) and the subsequent name change.. Even though they are called Caterham they are nothing to do with Lotus itself and have no history apart from Caterham licensing the Super Seven back from the mid-70s.

Caterham Cars was once a major dealer of Lotus, Lotus Renault GP has now renamed itself Lotus F1, now that Caterham has merged with Team Loyus and changed it name, they are largely the same, but with different names

Red Bull design guru Adrian Newey faces the new Formula One season lamenting the FIA's latest rules revisions he fears could put his team on the backfoot.

Newey's cars have enabled the team and driver Sebastian Vettel to become world champions over the past two years, with last season a particularly dominant one.

The 24-year-old German secured a new record for pole positions in a year (15), helping him to win 11 of the 19 grands prix en route to taking the title with four races to spare.

One of the strengths to the car was the exhaust blown diffuser, a device that created additional downforce, but for this season has been banned by motorsport's governing body.

The rule change has tested Newey's design skills to the limit and he is in the dark as to how the car, the RB8 revealed yesterday, will fare when it hits the track today for the first day of pre-season testing in Jerez.

McLaren failed to trouble the timesheets on day one of pre-season testing at Jerez but Jenson Button was content with their progress nonetheless.

Button ended the day eighth fastest of 12 runners, having given the team's new MP4-27 - the only car so far launched not to feature a step in its nose - its official debut.

"I could just about see over the front of the car! I think it's the lowest thing I think I've ever been in," the 2009 World Champion said afterwards.

"We did quite a bit of mileage today. It would have been nice to do more but it's the first day of testing so we were making sure everything was working correctly, and it was good to get a couple of reasonably long runs in."

BBC F1 presenter Jake Humphrey is joined by chief analyst Eddie Jordan and co-commentator David Coulthard to look ahead to the 2012 F1 season, which starts in Melbourne on 16 March.

The trio give their thoughts on the use of 'stepped' noses' as featured on several cars this season, designed to lower the nose to meet new regulations while increasing the airflow under the front of the car.

The team also predict Red Bull will face a "ferocious" battle from challengers attempting to surpass the reigning drivers' and constructors' champions.

Also, Adrian Sutil is going to appeal against his conviction for GBH. The prosecutor is also going to appeal, saying the sentence was not strong enough. Sutil of course is without a drive this coming season as Force India replaced him. They said it had nothing to do with the court case, but I bet it did.

Well that's down to the greed of Bernie. He doesn't care about the fans, he just cares about the money. Which is why it's going to Sky.

If though you want to see some great UK racing at a reasonable price then go to a BTCC weekend.. Great touring car racing, Porsche/Renault/Ginetta support races are included in the cost of the ticket.
