What would you like in the next Tivo update?

The question is now after the 15.2 update what would you really like to be added in their next update whenever that is.

Re: What would you like in the next Tivo update next year?

  • Grooveshark and Amazon Music players.
  • Addition of rew/ff/colour button control on USB keyboards
  • Web browser (no chance!)
  • Red button features working
  • Multi-room streaming working
  • SMS-style text entry working on all apps, not just TiVo HD menus and iPlayer
  • Ability to copy content to/from the TiVo harddrive
  • Ability to use TiVo to stream from other non-TiVo devices via SMB/FTP/other method(s)
  • Support for pyTiVo/Streambaby if the one above isn't an option
  • Faster UI (it's good now since 15.2 but could always be better)
  • More and better quality apps, i.e. support for third-party maybe with screening process (never gonna happen)
  • Ability to have three recordings going and still watch a live TV stream minus buffering (next to impossible technically, I'm guessing)

I'm sure there are more but most are just never going to happen because they're asking so much. As long as 15.3 or whatever it is keeps things the same or better than they are now I definitely feel I'm getting my £9.50 a month worth!

Yes quite a few of these features would be nice in the next update.

Along with the above, Netflix and any other subscription movie/TV Show services.

Same with music; more options than just Spotify, e.g. Napster and WE7 as well.

Online backup of series links and whishlists, in case you need a box swap; very important in my view.

Associated with this, the ability to change recording options, delete recordings and add whishlists on line.

agree with them, i hate it when you get a new box and have to set everything up again, it should also back up settings and config of menus as well

Re: What would you like in the next Tivo update next year?

A settings screen so default options for express series links can be set is a must surely?

Get the red button stuff and multi room streaming working too and I'll be extremely happy :-)

Re: What would you like in the next Tivo update next year?

Defining your own express series link settings. 4 minutes at the end is way too much for most shows.

Force TiVo to not record a suggestion if there is only one available tuner. I constantly seem to have all 3 recording lights on when I get home :erm:

Even if you could just manually save a data file to a USB stick would be nice, but I realise there is no driver support apparently, though this could maybe be included in a firmware update?

Would definately like program reminders as you miss start of some programs, also in apps wish I could access my picture folders in picasa instead of just seing a random selection of pictures, I can do this on my Panasonic Blue Ray when connected to internet so it can be done.

That's a good one. I am constantly being annoyed by messages to change channel when watching live football as it tries to record suggestions at the same time. Drives me crazy!

heavyside 26-11-2011 15:16

Re: What would you like in the next Tivo update next year?

My wish list would be (in no particular order)

Fully functioning red button.

Streaming between TiVo boxes.

Only using one tuner when recording consecutive programmes on the same channel.

Speed improvements (even with the 15.2 update my TiVo is still slower displaying menus than my old SA V+).

Reminders.

User specified global padding.

All menus in HD.

Lots more apps (I'd love to see the iPad's wonderful Ultimate Alphabet app available).

Totally agree (how did I forget that one?)

---------- Post added at 14:57 ---------- Previous post was at 14:42 ----------

When recording clashes occur on series links/recordings, Tivo looks at the +! channel as well. It should have an option to tell it not to do that if you want the HD version only.

Oh here's one...

  • Make Suggestions prefer HD or best SD source where available. (Might stop TiVo recording things from audio description channels)

Good suggestion there.

Perfect Choice 26-11-2011 16:28

Re: What would you like in the next Tivo update next year?

Another one from me: expand search to cover any source content.

This is partly what is on Tivo Premiere now from a You Tube demo I've seen, so as an example and subject to all the deals being in place, you could search for a film across all TV channels, Filmflex, Netflix, Blockbuster, Lovefilms, etc.

The same would apply to a TV programme from any source including online content providers.

The value VM has is that separate broadband link directly into Tivo, if VM can use that to give on-demand access to content form anywhere, they really start to break the link from channels and gives them a distinct advantage over the competition especially for HD streaming without having to wait for the download.

How the search database would work for this I cannot see right now (search request could be to a VM server which does the real search for you and then presents findings back to Tivo?) but something is covered on the USA Tivo premiere aas that searches multiple film content providers now.

That's a great idea.

Although it's probably outside the scope of a software upgrade, I would also like to see a dynamic EPG. If not that, then at least one with accurate programme information.

To record programs with actual start and finish times. And if something like F1 over runs, or switches to another channel because it has over run. Then if it could still record it in full then that would be brilliant.

Thank good ness it's not just me then - I had finally got my wife round to appreciating that the Tivo did have some extra uses over the V+ box and we enjoyed a series of Youtube videos easily searched for and found watched immediately - now? Youtube finally opens after you have watched the red line below the logo "rev up" for a minute or so, then you try a search and watch a sort of circle thing chase it's tail for a while and mostly after that a blank screen with nothing to do but exit back to live TV and start all over again - wife now thinks they are taking the ****.... (That should read as another word for urine)

Grrrrr

Old YouTube app still exists... go Apps & Games -> All Apps & Games and that is the one you want. Sadly YouTube searches via HDUI menus are still mapped to new YouTube app but that'll do as a workaround.

Ok then I'll get behind the call for the damned thing to take MY recording choices first and foremost over what it "Thinks" I might like, and No, I don't want to change the channel or cancel the recording, so sod off and do as you're told... :D

Make the blue button 'sticky' - I like to set it to view favourites only but it randomly resets itself to All channels which is *very* annoying.

Agree with the working red button, all menus in HD etc. Hope someone's listening as I wasn't too impressed with the 15.2 upgrade ...

I'm sure you can do that now by just pressing the clear button on your remote. Not tried it myself but sure I've read it somewhere on this forum.

Here's a good one:

  • When a promo for a show comes up and you think "oh, that looks interesting" you can press one of the coloured buttons to add it to the planned recordings list without having to search and add manually.

Now THAT would be transparency (and a nightmare to implement no doubt.) Something for the future though.

Most important update for me would be the ability to set/change the defaults for express series link. I want to be able keep more than 10 episodes sometimes, and keep my recordings until I delete them!

As far as I'm aware Sky only implement this feature on their own channels. I'm not sure why that is but I'm sure it's a huge technical effort and VM don't the luxury of their own channel line up to test it on.

Sky already do this with the green button remind me feature allowing you to add a reminder for the show or set a series link , I agree its an excellent idea.

Have all programs linked to their on demand page. Only on one show/film have I seen 'Watch now On Demand' when I was exploring the show even though I know others I have explored are available.

What would be good is an option for the Pic in Pic mini-screen not to show any tuner thats recording. Its turned off here simply because I don't want to see bits of recording programmes while I'm going through the menus

When watching a recording and you need to stop it to say, make a cup of tea or go to the shops or whatever, why not make the stop button on the remote actually stop the playing of the programme? Maybe it's me but I can only get the darned thing to stop if I go back to live TV..... (Unless of course, one of you knows better?)

The stop button does actually make it stop now in the new release (jums back to the previous menu usually, or if its in the last few minutes, pops up the keep/delete screen first)

That was fixed in the 15.2 update, so should work now. (the old workaround was Pause followed by Stop).

Re: What would you like in the next Tivo update next year?

The Express Series Link is a great improvement over what was there before, but I'd still like to set my own defaults. In particular the number of shows that are kept, and whether to keep until I delete or delete when space is needed. When I set a new series link, I still have to go into the Series Links to amend these options.

When the mini guide is open, the info button now does the same as the record button. Why can't the info button have the same functionality everywhere, including the EPG?

The speed of the UI isn't a major problem, but it does have its moments while you're waiting for a screen to be drawn or have the spinning red cirlce. The Sky Movies on demand menus are particularly slow.

Exploring On Demand can be painful, with several screens to navigate through before you can actually get to play the content you've selected.

The YouTube app doesn't seem to be working for me (won't play the video), but that issue asside, it's great that we can enter text using the numeric pad on the remote, but the YouTube search screen has a 2-row alphabet layout (yuck) and the remote can't be used.

Out of these, my highest priority would be the ability to set your own series link defaults.

However, still like Tivo, and wouldn't go back!

Able to tag recordings and process as a block, especially true in suggestions. i.e. tag and delete

To create a group and move all suggestions to that group from a single recording in suggestions.

To order by series/episode/to create sub groups for series.

To have a proper dynamic EPG so you record the program not the time slot.

To have the record engine look through the EPG to best record all the recordings wanted.

to be able to edit the program after its recorded so you can cut out the ads etc and then watch the program ad free etc when ever you want, so it is a soap watch it all way through with no ad break

Its been confirmed many times and explained that the 15.2 update adds support for red button access. All that is needed now are the actual apps, which will be released as and when they are ready.

Red button is already in TiVo now ;) Just no way to access it lol.

  • Better controls in the BBC iPlayer app. Right now it's very sluggish, doesn't support USB keyboards and is often laggy on HD streams especially when scrolling through to find the point you were at last!

Faster UI.

Just one improvement:

Ability to remember where you are in the TV Listings when exiting and then re-entering the guide. Being able to type in the channel number to jump to that channel in the guide helps, but I miss the V+'s ability to remember where you were.

Was there an additional update last night? My son said that the Tivo rebooted itself in the middle of the night.

The ability to set as many reminders for a particular time spot.
Here's why, As the reminders appear having set them up earlier
I can then determine which programme I want to watch right
then and what to record if any without having to trawl through
the EPG again. This in my opinion gives you a viewing menu
made personal and is a good way of setting up your Telly!

No it's just it probably does it loads when you are not looking.
I'm sure that is why the uptime has been removed as my S1 Tivo had that and it was always nice to see it had been up and running for hundreds of days....:D

If you're in the Cardiff area, all STBs were rebooted overnight for some network engineering work.

Text is part of the red button.

Whether it is or not the point is neither text nor red button services are available on TiVO yet, therefore people are requesting them.

Maybe you missed the point of the thread and should go back and read it all again. From the start. Paying attention this time.

They are requesting something that will not happen because the red button apps will appear at anytime and no Software update is needed.

What you've just posted basically says "they want something they won't get because they will get it eventually" which is contradictory and makes no sense whatsoever.

The title of the thread says "next TiVo update", not "next TiVo software/firmware update". Technically that means anything new counts as an update - not limited to a firmware update - including the Spotify app that came out less than 48 hours ago. Therefore red button/text apps count as updates and people have every right to keep requesting/mentioning them until they are available to all TiVo STBs.

That's about as straightforward as I can make it.

Just because Red Button functionality exists in 15.2 firmware basically means it doesn't count as a feature until it is enabled and available to the end user, which is why people are continuing to request it.

For example, I have a bike I bought for my son. It has wheels, but those wheels aren't mounted to the bike, so technically the bike is available but cannot be used until I update it by fitting the wheels. Until I fit those wheels, the bike is not enabled and available to the end user, i.e. my son, and he will continue to request it until the bike can be used.

If that childlike analogy doesn't explain it to you, I doubt anything will.

Ask Den what the title is actually meant to mean.

I class that as the next software/firmware update.

I can't speak for denphone but I'm sure it doesn't bother him or anyone else that people are taking it to mean firmware update and/or intermediary non-firmware update (i.e. a new app, enabling a feature that exists but can't be used yet). The point is people are throwing ideas out there in the hope Virgin Media will listen, which is a good thing.

The only one it seems to be bothering is you, as if everyone who isn't interpreting the thread in the same way as you is automatically wrong. That makes you wrong, not everyone else.

Have one of these. :dunce:

The second one cancels out the first one, because it's only the SD menus which don't have the PiP window.

Impossible, there's no eSATA port for it on the back like the US TiVo boxes. The only way to extend capacity would be crack open the VM TiVo using the right screwdrivers and replace the internal harddrive with something larger.

Just use a proper computer. The TiVo is not a desktop system replacement, nor should it be when there are more important tweaks needed (i.e. massive overhaul of the iPlayer app). Even I mentioned the absurdity of including a mobile browser because it would require implementing USB mouse support and a bunch of other things.

The rest of your suggestions were alright, although of course they've already come up before. :p: :)

I hope we are able to record Match choice and Champions League (2012 - 2013 season) games somehow.

What's hard to realise that VM red button match choice doesn't include being able to record each game , it makes me wonder do you actually watch Match Choice if you did you'd see that it always emphasises Sky+ users can select there game to record.

Yes i know and that means nothing.

Going by what Peter chapman said it sounds like they are allowed to do it.

but Virgin Media would need to make it work somehow.

1. Fix the video output.

2. Implement the 'Copy to DVD' functionality as in V+ (assuming this is possible!)

Just realised it would be possible if you used a harddrive that works via USB, although I very much doubt even the US TiVo's have USB HDD support so the VM TiVo won't get it.

from what i have read US Tivos DO have usb hdd support enabled

Re: What would you like in the next Tivo update?

Huh, guess I was thrown off by the prompt you get when plugging something storage-based into the VM TiVo and the lengths TiVo US go to to sell their Western Digital official eSATA add-on HDDs.

Personally I wouldn't want to add an eSATA drive to TiVo because then you're running two HDDs which is louder/less energy efficient and as soon as the second one is twinned up you can't remove it without losing all the content that was recorded from the time it was added. I like the idea of being able to hook up an independent FAT32/NTFS/EXT3/HFS+ drive that can be moved between systems easily so media can be played on anything that will support it!

Oh, they could fix the damn iPlayer app, it's really buggy. Keeps crashing my entire TiVo HDUI forcing it to reboot itself, and when it doesn't do that it's often laggy on HD streams.

Maybe make On Demand streams not use a tuner, too. That'd be nice.
