TiVo Commander Android App

As several others have reported, the TiVo Commander App works well with the 15.2 upgrade. I have to say what a pleasant suprise I had when I ran this as it is free, a nice interface and more useful than I was expecting. Definitely worth two thumbs up.
I haven't looked very hard to see if there are other good non-Virgin apps so if others are out there it would be good to hear about them. An app to stream recorded content would be cool.

LOL. Yes, but not what I had in mind. Uncool.

How do you get this app to work and where are the settings for MAK?

Thanks

MAK is Media Access Key. You will find it listed in System Info.
You will also need to switch remote network connection on.
The IP adress that it needs is the adress of the Tivo on your home network - probably something like 192.168.x.y
Leave the TiVo Port as 1413 (defaulted) and leave the TiVo service number blank. This will autofill later.
I'm not sure but I think you will also need to rerun the connect to the Connect to the Virgin Mrdia Service Now dialogue.

Looking forward to this on my TiVo.

Is it sad that I have already installed the app on my phone and connected TiVo to the router in preparation for the 15.2 update next week?! :D

Nah, not sad. Might be a bit geeky but we like our toys don't we? Just a shame that Virgin don't seem to be interested in knocking down the barriers to getting us the full interconnectivity that they have in the US. Then we would have more features to play with or to look forward to. Still at least this is a significant start, let's hope that they continue to extend the capabilities that the technology is capable of.

Nope I have network cables sitting on my desk waiting to be plugged in, last month I bought a network switch for the living room and a router for the bedroom and am now waiting in anticipation of 15.2 next week.

No surprise there... TiVo's use of Flash in the HD side of the STB really slows things down.

I think what I'm looking forward to most is being able to schedule/organise shows without going into the menus, doing it all in the background via phone so the TiVo itself is in fullscreen mode. Combined with VM's own TV Guide app, could be pretty useful.

Couldn't agree more. I already got my TiVo hooked up to the household ethernet switch and installed the app... even went as far as to put the TiVo's MAC address into the router DHCP list so I know which IP it will get when the port is enabled!

...and the geeks shall inherit the earth...

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

Must admit I'm impressed with this app, works a treat and took all of 2 minutes to set up.

Hopefully VM will release an official version of it as there are a few buttons missing on the remote compared to the VM remote but on the whole it's pretty damn good :D

zekeisaszekedoes 23-11-2011 14:52

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

Yep, found it very easy to get things working. Go into custom settings and enter TSN/MAK/IP details and it's good to go. Whenever I get a problem it's because the WiFi connection on my Samsung Galaxy has dropped for some reason: software itself is stable and fast.

Nice for Android users to get the better app before iDevice folks, eh? :P :D

Cheapest, easiest way is to buy a cheap router or two that can be flashed with DD-WRT firmware (I'd recommend budget D-Link models) and set one up as a wireless bridge. Then you can have up to five devices that are ethernet only on the wireless network instead.

An even easier way than that, although not as inexpensive, is to use Homeplugs.

scaseman 24-11-2011 11:58

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

Tivo Commander seems to work for me except I get an error code BD72 in settings and when I tap on a programme I get a busy symbol spinning in the tv screen. I suspect it may be a flash problem but if any one can help please let me know. The App is still very useful even as it is.

You can get Powerline adapters for £35 now http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-P.../dp/B004INVKP4 so not that bad. Personally go for them over wireless

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

D-Link DIR-615 D2 routers can usually be picked up for around £10 from eBay and DD-WRT for it is free so it is cheaper, and in my experience wireless bridging can work very well if your regular wireless in the house is reliable in the first place.

I've never used them but yeah, generally wired is far more reliable, presumably even if it's piggybacking across the house electrical supply.

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

I have got Tivo Commander working - but I must say I'm a little disappointed. Fairly limited in what it can do. Would be far better if you could:
  1. Cancel recordings without going into SD menu and losing what you're watching
  2. Browse planned recordings (again avoiding SD menus on your TV)
  3. Basically doing any of the things which mean that you lose audio and video

If I'm watching TV, the only advantage I can see in this app is if you can avoid going into menus which disturb the viewing pleasure of anyone in the room.

Or am I missing something???

zantarous 24-11-2011 14:32

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

The problem with wireless is that for stuff like the apps they are fine but if you have two Tivos streaming will not work well. I was having a browse of some my recordings today and had a look at the file sizes and some movies were clocking in at 23GB.

Also if you are going wireless you can get wireless dongals that fit in the ethernet port although you will need one that doesn't need a driver installed. Some folks may find that easier then setting up a bridge.

Remember it's not an official app, so some of what it does will be a workaround.

I'm sure the official app, when released for Android, won't have those limitations

You can schedule series links without a hitch. Can't do WishLists though, or a second Series Link for a show that has one already on a different channel. It's a good basic app though and I quite like it... last night I set up about ten series links with it, using the search function in a few cases.

My favourite things are going right into My Shows to see what is recording without bringing up the Info menu, or playing a show from My Shows without going into those menus, which even with the F11 SD menu can be slower.

Still need the VM TV Guide app for EPG. It's a workaround using both but hey, still better than just rudimentary Peanut app iOS has.

Are you talking about seeing a movie clocking in at 23GB on the VM TiVo itself?! If so how did you do that?

Easier indeed, but I find using a proper router as a wireless bridge gives you much better range than a smaller dongle. If reliability is an issue it's something to consider when devising a solution.

Not having much getting this working:dunce:

I'm pretty sure all info is correct (IP address, MAK,service number).

I have noticed on Network Diagnostics (on Tivo box)the "Port Configuration test" shows as failed? could this be the problem and if so how do I rectify it please? It also wont get an IP using DHCP and if I use a static IP address it still wont connect!

The app itself goes through searching and then says "No results found"

Thanks in advance
Just remembered I used the network cable for the PS3 so it (Tivo) wasn't plugged in to the network!!!!!

The Premiere is one of the US TiVo boxes which is what the app is actually designed for. You need to go into custom settings and manually enter the IP address and MAK of your TiVo.

Does it work with WPA though? I know that there are very few WDS systems that support WPA (dynamic keys can't work, static can but rarely do). I'd be very wary of implementing a bridge using just WEP because it can be cracked in a matter of minutes using a freely available app which then renders even MAC filtering irrelvant. I switched a long time ago from WEP WDS to homeplug and never regretted it. Ping times are much, much better and throughput is much better too.

Of course, DD-WRT bridging supports whatever your main router supports regardless of whether that main router is running DD-WRT or not. I used to use it for extending WPA2-AES (maximum strength encryption for consumer units, I believe) around the house before everything was hardwired.

Have a read!

Hi, i've been reading through this thread as I was having issues getting TiVo commander to work..but eventually, it's now working, so a big thanks to everyone who's posted :)

Now, here's a question, and I apologise in advance if it seems like a stupid one coming from a blatant TiVo n00b...

But what exactly is the point of TiVo commander? I mean, I can only use it in the house when connected to my home network by wifi. I thought it meant I could set things to record while out of the house? The remote part seems pretty cool, but if I can only use it in the house, then i'll just use the normal remote :erm: Am I missing something?

Try this.

Download the apk either direct to your phone or via computer and download via USB or something like that. Get it now before TiVo try and erase that, too, spoilsports that they are.

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

After some hours of tweaking and general annoyance I have managed to get TiVo Commander to control the TiVo from anywhere. Not just on WLANs, but via 3G too!

The tough part was setting up a working PPTP VPN (required; won't work any other way) using my router with DD-WRT firmware. When that's done entering the details in an Android device is pretty easy.

Now it's done I can schedule shows and manage the hard drive remotely with far more control than is possible using the VM TV Guide webapp thing. It's not quite as fast as using it across the LAN, but considering how many hops it has to perform to get from 3G to my home network it's still impressive!

zekeisaszekedoes 04-12-2011 11:03

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

After more testing it doesn't seem quite as successful as I had hoped. I'm loathe to crosspost between forums, but here's something I wrote over at VM Community:

Quote:

However the functionality of the app is severely impaired: it doesn't appear to schedule recordings and series links correctly or at all as it would if it were directly on the LAN. Sometimes it seems to parse several requests at once, things I've tried earlier via the app but seemed to fail at the time.

This might be related to a speed issue the VPN appears to have. When streaming video from my NAS PC via FTP outside the LAN the buffering is efficient enough to prevent dropouts assuming the file size isn't too large to overwhelm the 3Mb/s upload speed of my broadband. However, the exact same videos are terrible when played via SMB over VPN, almost as if VPN has a bitrate overhead impacting performance. These tests were performed on my laptop but the VPN itself seems really unstable on my phone too, and doesn't appear to stay connected even when the notification bar hasn't informed me of a disconnect.

Probably completely the wrong place to post all of this, but being new to VPN I could use some hints here.

On your router it should be possible to 'fix' the IP address used by the Tivo. On mine it is in the 'DHCP reservations' list - the router will always allocate the same IP address to the Tivo even after a disconnection.

the ip address i use on the tivo is the etherent ip address. this is the one that changes.

Yes I've done the same, added DHCP reservations for both TIVO's on the Superhub and it's been fine.

I've actually given the Tivo a fixed IP, so will never change, you can do that within the settings on the Tivo box, instead of DHCP, just use fixed IP, you can set the last 2 digits to one that isn't being used by any other device.

I just plugged the TiVo in, downloaded the app and it works. I think its great, much better than the VM app which I find very slow and cumbersome.

Virgin won't connect TiVo to the SuperHub as it's not officially lauched yet, but you have to do so for the app to work

Cheers, took about 10 mins to get a local ip address

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

Anyone know how to use this from an external ip address?
Ive put in port forwarding (1413) to the tivo's IP but it says it cannot be found.

Wanted to show the app to a few friends and colleagues who won't be visiting the house to see ot

Has the new FW update broken the Tivo Commander and messed up multiroom streaming/networking as well?

Had a browse on D/S denphone and it does seem with the new update they are trialing will strip the aility to network from TiVo and i guess all of the unofficiaL apps people are usng including the one posted on another forum section which gave the ability to use reminders on TiVo.:(

Well they certainly have done something and there could be a lot of unhappy people when they realise whats happened.

If they have they kept it very quite denphone think i read there were no updates imminent officially! Its only through a person reporting his ability to network had gone after an update that this has come to light at all.

Crafty devils.

And yes i am guessing people will not be overjoyed about it as no warning had been issued well none i have seen anyhow.

Nothing wrong really, they don't want 3rd party companies connecting with the box, like most companies. Only problem being they haven't bothered to actually release the official version in nearly a year now.

Maybe its for TiVo to iOS/Android device streaming... :hyper:

Thats the nub of the problem 3rd party apps are only out there because VM have not released official ones as yet.

There is an app also from a 3rd party that gives the reminder function to TiVo now if a 3rd party can programme one why not VM.

TonyHoyle 20-01-2012 18:42

Re: TiVo Commander Android App

Tivo themselves have no problem with 3rd party apps - they even document the protocols on their website. This is purely VM being anal about it.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that the TiVo Commander app was pulled from the Android Market at TiVo's request.

Oh dear. It's official. Virgin are disabling access and their own app is scheduled for "later in the year". Back to using the remote to key in search terms again.

What a disappointment. Mine is still working at the moment so I guess my area is not part of the pilot. Here's hoping that common sense rules before this software update (sic) is rolled out nationally.

:( :td: :td:

Wow a backwards step indeed. One of the best features of TIVO disabled, and the official app nowhere to be seen. Poor show VM.

According to the author it was pulled because he used the Tivo logo and other TM artwork. He said that when he had time and resources he would update the app and remove these.

Its a pretty crappy move, this is something that would have put it over sky and it would have been big with techies now we have to wait for Virgin to remove all the good features on their Buddy app and may be getting it released sometime "later in the year"

This is laughable. One of the few functions of TiVo that works very well and VM are going to disable it. What a joke of a company, completely out of touch with their customers.

Maybe not VM but TiVo themselves.

Mr K 22-01-2012 13:16

Nope, VM are a joke. If they had an official app fair enough, but they don't. No reason for this downgrade, they could tell 'TiVo inc' where to go if they are the ones demanding this, they couldn't afford to lose VM.

As has been pointed out Tivo have documentation that shows you how to use their networking features to create network apps. This is a VM decision, Tivo in the US is quite a open platform and lets you do a lot more with the network side of things.

Yes and not a decision thats gone down very well in many peoples minds.

Just had a good whinge on the support forum about this. No doubt it'll be ignored but its made me feel better anyway !

To have something that works well and deliberately knacker it seems bonkers. TiVo needs all it can get it the battle with Sky, and remote control was a major advantage which they've taken away.

We'll be waiting months/years for a VM app which I'm betting won't be as good or restricted to Apple or some such nonsense.

I'd of thought it was almost ready if they've done that... understand the frustration though.
