UK unemployment increases to 2.62m

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15747103

Quote:

UK unemployment rose by 129,000 in the three months to September to 2.62 million, as youth unemployment also rose above a million.

Quote:

"These figures show just how much our economy is being affected by the crisis in the eurozone," said Employment Minister Chris Grayling.

Not a very good picture as it stands and it is highly likely to get worse before it gets better.

Sad news really. The only possible silver lining is that economies tend to start recovering before unemployment starts falling. But, I guess that is grasping at straws

Why do they blame the Eurozone? I think they are just looking for a scapegoat to blame. The fact is business's here have no money to employ new staff because they are taxed to the hilt.

Yes there is some truth to that as all companies and people seem to be getting at the moment is rising taxes and they seem to bring them in stealthily.

small businesses need definate relief for sure not sure on big businesses they to me need to change there ways to keep jobs or indeed increase them. When you hear they drop jobs increase bosses pay or meet rediculous pre-arranged shareholders dividends on shrinking profits.

Sadly do see massive increase read somewhere if it bites hard 2m could lose jobs.

If we could see that sort losses then we could be introuble.

Anybody got stats pre government financial problems to what is now to see how far its gone up now. thats when we not hit it hard yet. would expect it to slowly asselerate.

We yet to see impact shareholders pulling out shares too.

Are these "stealth taxes", as you stated in your post, and if so, could you provide some examples where they were "stealthily" increased?

A stealth tax is a tax levied in such a way that is largely unnoticed, or not recognized as a tax and one example of this is where the British Government diverted revenue from the National Lottery to fund public spending and also stamp duty is a stealth tax and also the revaluation of houses for council tax was a stealth tax as well.

Hugh 16-11-2011 20:01

Re: UK unemployment increases to 2.62m

You mean the stamp duty they abolished for first time buyers for properties under £150k, and the rest of the stamp duty rises were widely announced (unless you mean that being publicised in all the national press and media is the evil Tories sneaky way of hiding things away....;)).

Do you mean this stealthy council tax revaluation that didn't happen, and hasn't happened since 1993? BBC
Quote:

There will be no revaluation of council tax bands in England during this Parliament, the government has pledged.

It means there will be no rise in local taxes for householders based solely on the increased value of their homes.

Every property in England is in one of eight council tax bands, depending on value, and these were last set in 1993.
btw, you appear to be reaching into the past for examples, when you said in your post when you mentioned stealth taxes

Now Hugh did l mentioned the Tories no l did not because l did not want to be political but non political and as for recent stealth taxes don't you remember the wheelie bin taxes or the Green ‘stealth tax to encourage wind farms and nuclear power and also do not forget the (Hips) home information packs.

David Cameron and Clegg have to resign, they have no idea of how to get out of the problem.

Its at an all time high for 17 years, and all he is very about is abroad, he has to concentrate of BRITISH workers, and getting this country back on its feet.

He is getting involved in countries that should not concern him, he has to stop putting so many taxes on us, you cannot get blood out of a stone.

They both state that they will introduce training schemes to get people back to work, what for there is NO guaranteed work at the end of the scheme - l should know, l have been on a so called training scheme run by the government.:(

HIPS were abolished a year and a half ago (so not so much "at the moment", are they ;) ), and it would be helpful if you could provide a link to this Green stealth tax*, as I don't remember having to pay this.

*unless you mean the Carbon Reduction Commitment, which isn't intended to be implemented until 2013

*or this made up story that the Mail had to retract

denphone 17-11-2011 04:52

Re: UK unemployment increases to 2.62m

l am surprised you went into the Daily Mail :) as l did not get it from there but there are stealth taxes but people generally don't realise it as here are several examples of stealth taxes either now or being implemented in the coming years like Janusz Lewandowski, the European budget commissioner, wants tax raising powers to shift EU funding from national government transfers to EU-wide taxation on energy, travel or banking thus raising £3 billion from hard pressed UK taxpayers then there is the new €100 household charge which is also known as the property tax and also don't forget the wheelie bin tax which l have already mentioned in a previous post and l am sure there are several more which people don't realise that they are paying.

The biggest tax which affects business's is fuel tax. It drives up the general cost of everything including electricity to light the business, the cost of delivering and receiving stock, and even the cost of the dinner time sandwich.

Totally agree.

However, if these taxes aren't collected, difficult to support what the Government spend (as Governments have no actual money, just that which they collect in taxes).

I understand that, but we should cut fuel tax first, instead of anything else including corporation tax and income tax.

Yes paying out for fuel is becoming a financial noose round households and businesses neck at the present time and its likely to get worse then get better.

Hugh 17-11-2011 07:46

Wow - "a financial noose"!

Sure it isn't a "gullotine cutting of the life-blood of families", or "a plague decimating our countries spirit".

Do you have a "Daily Mail/Express Handy Headlines For All Occasions*" booklet? - it seems that way....:D

Perhaps a bit over the top but in our family and l suspect many others fuel and energy bills have reduced our disposable income significantly and even you will admit its going to get worse before it gets better and as for a handbook perhaps you can suggest something.:D

And l do like your signature below and l wonder who does that remind me of.;)

Yes, it will get worse before it gets better - that would be that world-wide recession thingy......

As for the handbook - read what you write, and if you think "that reads like something from a Daily Mail / Express / Metro headline", re-write it...;)

l do not take many headlines from the above mentioned as l am a Guardian / BBC man myself and remember most media and news organisations all have a particular bias one way or another towards a headline or story to suit their political whims of the day.

I think it is now time for this Government to resign and we should have a new election in 2012 or 2013

or

we need to start some big infrastucture projects, increase taxes (for the rich most of all) and launch a state owned development bank for small, medium and large business based in britain

The government doesn't have a clue on how to solve it, and slightly changed of subject, it been said that if NHS hospital don't do the 18 week waiting list the hospitals will get fined.

The NHS is having problems as well, and yet the government will fine them.

The government are always talking about what we can do to help the unemployed, but even hospitals are cutting back on staff.

Why do we have this trouble when there is Tory government, riots, unemployment going up, The puppets have one rule for the rich and one for the poor.

I found this atricle from the Guardian interesting this morning. Apparently the young employed are now required to work voluntarily to get jobseekers allowance. I wonder why the policy is not for all unemployed people regardless of age.

This I agree with and is one of the best posts gregarding tax I have read for a while.

Income taxes are efficient and fair and should not be cut.

Fuel tax hits everyone rich or poor badly and in addition it affects prices of good on almost everything.
Another bad tax is the stealth one on wholesale gas which is due very soon and will be responsible for upcoming price rises in that area.

At the same time tho tax isnt the root of all problems in the country, corporate greed is, companies like centrica laying off staff when they not struggling and other companies offshoring etc. We have a wealth distribution problem that no government will tackle.

I agree. Not just corporate greed, all greed. People used to and some do still work for the enjoyment of the job, ie seeing the affect there job has on the people who are affected, most these days those just try and screw as much money out of the person or company they are dealing with as possible. I HATE and detest the culture of compensation we have now as that has drove up insurance premiums (and of course there greed), so pushing up the amount all business's have to pay out.

Isn't it about time that Cameron and Clegg lovers on this forum realise one thing, this country is in a total mess, far worse than what Labour ever caused.

We have unemployment at an all time high, and instead of trying to improve things they are not, Budget cuts are hitting hard, do we find the government saying right we will cut some MPs to save money and merge MPs to cover other regions, to save money, of course they won't.

Cuts have to start at the top, and that means MPs salaries, l have watched Parliament on Tv, and most of them are asleep and come out with silly questions which extend time in the house.

A few weeks ago they house was totally full when a vote was needed, and then the house was cleared, and there was a few MPs talking silly business.

The government have now gone on a short holiday to have a break, Soon it will be Xmas then they will have another holiday.

I bet when the strike happens, Clegg and Cameron will be out of the country.

I think there is proposal to shelve some MP's I dont think its right to be fair.

Whats is needed is VALUE for money make these MP'S SIT more sessions.

I would argue they should get two options wage wise.

Minimum pay like us all paid on sittings in seat and constituency work and them claim with reason expenses to XX point.

Other give them XX wage but tell them everything comes out of it no claiming expenses.

Give them little top up for cabinet work we will see the END of gorging.

Do this with lords too.

The economy sucking is hurting Arthur, not the cuts.

http://www.tfa.net/wp-content/upload.../11/Graph1.png

Quote:

In percentage terms, Labour cut spending as a share of GDP by 8%, or 2.67% per year.
http://www.tfa.net/wp-content/upload.../11/Graph2.png

Quote:

The Coalition are cutting spending as a share of GDP by 13.8%, which, over 5 years, is 2.77% per year. Almost exactly the same as Labour.
I don't remember screams of 'too far, too fast' with Blair, the state was not grown at the same speed as the economy then. It's all about the economy and a good part of this is actually outside of our control for now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J52BQFdPLJ4

EDIT: Oh yes and look at the numbers on the sides - however did we cope with the state only being 37.5% of the economy let alone the 34.7% it was in 2000 while we struggle with it being in the mid-40s and people are bitterly hurting due to brutal state cuts.

As I remember it we coped fairly well. Must just be me.
