Intermitent browsing issue
Afternoon All,
Wondering if anyone can help me. Since yesterday morning I have noticed my 50MB internet connection acting a little odd. General browsing activity is very slow but it is very intermittent. Websites / clicked links can take a long long time to go anywhere. I have also noticed that uploading files is very slow. I have run speed and ping tests and both came back fine. I am running a continued ping –t test to various sites and notice the odd time out but nothing major perhaps 1 in 15 are timeouts. I would of ignored it but browsing the web is kinda useful J My VOIP phone also seems to be affected Skype is fine Iphone /ipad /laptop /pc all have same issue when browsing Nothing has changed software wise Tried 2 different routers Tried connecting direct to modem via PC. In short whatever browse I try just seems to hang there thinking about it and then maybe displays half a page as if it can’t load the rest yet sometimes it will be fine. The upload is the odd bit - my upload speed doing a speedtest is fine (around 4.80) yet sending a file via skype or ftp is very slow nearly 7 hours for a 20mb file also i just noticed my email outbox full of emails i thought i had sent. Something is going on here Any ideas? |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
This is exact same issue i am having with the websites and ever since the 8th of sept when modem went offline and im certain virgin was messing around with network.
Ever since also im getting odd increases of latency and if i reboot modem the latency issue vanishes and i also get this on my modem log now almost every day.. Lost MDD Timeout;CM-MAC=;CMTS-MAC=;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0; |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
did you contact virgin about it? i did - very hard to get anywhere when all they say is "everything is fine with the modem"
i've used virgin BB since the day it came out in my area probably 11 years ago now, i know a fault when i see one :) |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
ever since they messed about with peer to peer traffic the whole network has been a complete and utter shambles, can't stream videos from youtube, online gaming pings hitting a all time high.
honestly paying full whack for a substandard service is a joke, they should be paying us to use their god awful service. btw thats me being polite about vm |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
I'm getting the same issue in bracknell

:) Small world. Ok spent more time with virgin didnt get anywhere they said it was my wireless i explained only my iphone/ipad are connected via the wireless i have tried everything i can think of and im happy its not my fault. They connected to me using logmein and had a look i showed them web pages not loading or half loading. They then said use a proxy and made me enter in webcache.virginmedia.com on port 8080 This did make web browsing usable - it really was unusable beforehand. Web pages now loaded in 7-10 seconds instead of not at all. The virgin tech said ok happy to help bye. i said WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO what the hell are you on about? my web browsing is now usable but super slow. This change is for my PC i am not going to use that proxy on every other device i own or that anyone else brings round my house the problem is outside my local network and on your side. I said waiting 7-10 seconds for a web page to load is not fixed by any means. I use my connection everyday from 9-23:00 on and off so know what browsing should be like. I said look - you will have others phone you up just escalate the issue and save everyone time. He said no. i said fine i will call back in the morning and get even more grumpy with you. Fred i PM'd ya perhaps we can exchange notes to get this fixed. Oh and on top of that the remote session he had with me was funny - he clicked things and nothing happened then 30 seconds later lots of stuff happened all at once thsi kept happening. I said i told you my connection is playing up ;) ---------- Post added at 23:20 ---------- Previous post was at 22:32 ---------- a demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uofR-rQ-kng taken at a good time but image it the swirling loading icon all day... |

Re: Intermitent browsing issue
this morning web browsing is worse and it seems getting my emails via outlook is taking forever. I have never seen outlook take 30 mins to update the inbox before even the smallest of emails appears.
One odd thing i have noticed is i can pretty much always search google - clicking a link from a search result does not work but google always seems to work. any ideas how i can approach virgin? below are 2 sample tracerts that just show 1-2 timeouts Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1 2 6 ms 7 ms 5 ms 10.159.60.1 3 6 ms 5 ms 5 ms winn-core-1a-ge-116-956.network.virginmedia.net [62.253.121.81] 4 6 ms 5 ms 5 ms winn-bb-1a-so-130-0.network.virginmedia.net [62. 253.184.113] 5 33 ms 7 ms 7 ms winn-bb-1b-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net [213.10 5.172.162] 6 10 ms * 38 ms brnt-bb-1a-ae3-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253 .185.197] 7 18 ms * 10 ms glfd-bb-1b-as1-0.network.virginmedia.net [212.43 .163.105] 8 10 ms 9 ms 9 ms glfd-tmr-1-ae5-0.network.virginmedia.net [213.10 5.159.46] 9 10 ms 11 ms 11 ms tcl5-ic-1-as0-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253. 185.78] 10 10 ms 11 ms 11 ms 212.58.239.249 11 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms 212.58.238.133 12 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms virtual-vip-231.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131] Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1 2 8 ms 7 ms 5 ms 10.159.60.1 3 6 ms 5 ms 6 ms winn-core-1a-ge-116-956.network.virginmedia.net [62.253.121.81] 4 6 ms 5 ms 5 ms winn-bb-1a-so-130-0.network.virginmedia.net [62. 253.184.113] 5 6 ms 5 ms 7 ms winn-bb-1b-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net [213.10 5.172.162] 6 30 ms 8 ms 7 ms brnt-bb-1a-ae3-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253 .185.197] 7 10 ms 9 ms 9 ms glfd-bb-1b-as1-0.network.virginmedia.net [212.43 .163.105] 8 10 ms 10 ms 9 ms glfd-tmr-1-ae5-0.network.virginmedia.net [213.10 5.159.46] 9 12 ms * 11 ms tcl5-ic-1-as0-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253. 185.78] 10 10 ms 11 ms 13 ms 212.58.239.249 11 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms 212.58.238.133 12 12 ms 11 ms 11 ms virtual-vip-231.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131] ---------- Post added at 09:48 ---------- Previous post was at 09:33 ---------- Not sure how good it is but ran: a simple 50 pings and got 4%-6% packetloss this isnt much but i can assure u it took me a long time to get to this page to write this :) ---------- Post added at 09:57 ---------- Previous post was at 09:50 ---------- C:\>netstat -s -p tcp TCP Statistics for IPv4 Active Opens = 1933 Passive Opens = 229 Failed Connection Attempts = 261 Reset Connections = 641 Current Connections = 32 Segments Received = 921143 Segments Sent = 490881 Segments Retransmitted = 954 |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
perhaps unrelated but my tivo box is slow this morning.
even playing back a show on the local hard drive takes ages and often bugs out - for example click my shows (takes 1-2 mins) select a show (takes 1-2 mins) then find the folder is empty (its not) go back (1-2 mins) go back in (1-2 mins) shows are there - click play - takes awhile to start playing ---------- Post added at 12:35 ---------- Previous post was at 11:27 ---------- went as far as borrowing a friends laptop. connected directly to my modem still have same issue also found this in my event log in the modem - not sure it means much. Re: Intermitent browsing issue
I am in bracknell RG12 too.
Exact same problem. Been using Virgin 10mb for almost two years with no problems at all. Since yesterday morning web browser is almost unusable. it's taken me 30 minutes just to post this reply. Something is seriously wrong. |

Re: Intermitent browsing issue
Yep. That's about the size of it.
Just randomly pages will not load or only partially load. You seem to be getting a better success rate than me though. |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
today hasnt been as bad as yesterday and as i say in the video that was lucky
sometimes it kinds works other times its a no go. did u call virgin at all? |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
Not yet, but will do later.
I thought I'd check the forums first. There are few posts on Virgin community boards from others with similar problem in the same area. I'll post back after I've spoken to Virgin, but I don't have a high expectation... |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
if u get a support ID number let me know it will be handy to mention it if someone else calls - they refuse to accept its a problem :)
last support id i got was; 6812355 |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
Having the same problem in Edinburgh. Its daft speedtest is saying running full speed yet half the websites are taking dial up time to load
|
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
Virgin tell me they have had a number of calls from this postcode reporting this problem. They have identified a fault and are currently working on it. They expect it to be fixed in 24-48 hours and have suggested I call back on Saturday if the problem is still ongoing.
Thanks for posting SOSAGES. I'd likely be pulling my kit apart trying to find the issue otherwise. Let's hope they sort it out. I really don't want to spend another half hour listening to their hold music. |

Re: Intermitent browsing issue
That's really bizarre.
I had to wait an age on hold to actually talk to someone but they told me straight away there was a fault flagged up for this postcode. Afraid they didn't give me a support ID. I tried to reply to this http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...ys/td-p/762597 but couldn't even get through the registration process so I gave up. I'll give it 'till Saturday... |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
yeah i tried to reply :)
i will wait as well :) |

yes, packet loss is a killer
running -n 50 pings generally state packet loss is between 2-10% on average its 4-6% |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
Here are some of my SamKnows DNS stats from Wednesday late afternoon/early evening (I'm in Clydebank). The figure on the right is the DNS failure rate (as a %):
2011-10-05 19:00:00 42.86 2011-10-05 18:00:00 7.14 2011-10-05 17:00:00 0.00 2011-10-05 16:00:00 7.14 Packet loss stats from this period (%packets lost): 2011-10-05 19:00:00 19.21 2011-10-05 18:00:00 1.23 2011-10-05 17:00:00 11.66 2011-10-05 16:00:00 4.92 And here is my download speed stats from roughly the same period (average Mbps): 2011-10-05 20:00:00 50.68 2011-10-05 18:00:00 50.46 2011-10-05 14:00:00 50.72 Certainly shows no issue with download speeds, but something wrong with DNS. There are other stats too (latency, response times, etc) and they all show as well out of the norm. Settled down now, though. SamKnows quite useful after all! |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
anyone else think its better now?

Re: Intermitent browsing issue
Hi, Mine is worse today in RG12 I spoke to a tech today, who remoted onto my PC and saw the exact problem I am having, which is that some pages wont load, others partially load.
He has said he can't find a problem with my modem, but after looking at tracert's on my machine it seems there may be an issue with the network, so an engineer is coming to look at the green box outside, and my modem on Thursday. hopefully he can sort it, because it is driving me nuts! ---------- Post added at 13:36 ---------- Previous post was at 13:36 ---------- Hi, Mine is worse today in RG12 I spoke to a tech today, who remoted onto my PC and saw the exact problem I am having, which is that some pages wont load, others partially load. Re: Intermitent browsing issue
RG12 here too
Getting same issues for about 4 days now Rang today got told that they know about the issue eta is 12th Oct . and i will get a text when its fixed .. not holding me breath tho ;) webcache would suggest its masking the problem .. accessing a cache rather than asking the real web to me ... I think a router or something is dying somewhere that they need to find |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
Just got an automated phone call, tech has been cancelled!!! WTF
Oh well changed all my computers to use the cache all working.....for now btw the cache is 'the web' pete |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
Still no good for me. Web is unusable.
Another call to Virgin (sigh). Why do I feel this will run and run? I guess it's time to dig out the old Sky router. It may be slow but at least it's usable. So I am currently paying Virgin £20 per month for a worse service than I get from sky for free. How does that work then? |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
mine has been better than tues-weds-thurs but still a little iffy

Re: Intermitent browsing issue
Hi guys,
From Basingstoke RG22 and it is simply awful and has been since Wednesday. Tivo is effected as well as my 50mb BB with all the same faults as everyone else. Only manging to post this now as I'm on the nightshift! I had to suffer a 1.5 hour call to Virgin just to fault out and that was really really painfull. No matter how many times I said that it is a data issue within the area, as a good friend has issues with his Tivo, she still inisted I follow her script for a BB issue and that I ring again to book out the Tivo. Grrrrrr! There is no point ranting at the lady on the other side of the world as they can only follow a script and going off script with "I have already reset my modem & router, directly connected my modem to the PC, attemped to do a speedtest but cannot connect, do ping tests oh and my Tivo box is suffering as well" sends them into a spiral of flaff! So what happened in the end? Appointment this Friday morning but of course that is just for the BB and not for the Tivo. Shall make contact in the morning to increase the pro-rota refund to start from Wednesday gone using the proof of both the Virgin media community forum and here and perhaps get the issue resolved. Might even pop done to Hook to the main office there...! |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
I never did get around to calling Virgin again.
But no problems at all today and yesterday. Hopefully whatever it was is fixed and you are all seeing an improvement too. |
Re: Intermitent browsing issue
cool will try it out and take out the proxy inputs this evening :)
