The jarrow march 2011
It is always sad when people have to go to extreme lengths to achieve something to survive.
I never thought in my lifetime that l would ever hear about The Jarrow March in an area where things have vastly improved in financial terms, since the days of the last march. But the way things are going is that Kids won't have the most important thing to survive and that is Jobs, the unemployment record in this country isd now very high and the cuts being brought in by the coalition is now staring to bite severely, with redundancies to our armed services and we are now depending on volunteers ect. I give my support to this march, and l think everyone should be the same, I am five years away from retiring, BUT am in fear of losing the job l love to do, through job cuts.. |

Re: The jarrow march 2011
The politics in the initial post aside I am happy to give this march wholehearted support, our youth deserve a far better deal than the one politicians of every colour have given them.

Re: The jarrow march 2011
l agree with that sentiment.

Organiser Claire Laker-Mansfield said: “We are marching to demand that the Government invests in a decent future for young people... there are almost a million out of work.”

Re: The jarrow march 2011
I don't think the situation now compared to 1936 is even similar .Although unemployment is rising it isn't as high as it was in the early 80's .Today we have a comprehensive welfare system ,it has it's problems but it is there, back then the system was still in it's infancy ,people were literally starving ,being forcibly evicted and where treated as a underclass .Society is totally different now ,we have safeguards in place to prevent the sort of poverty that the original marchers protested against .All this march will achieve will be to give cameron some tv time making supportive noises and slagging of the labour party

Re: The jarrow march 2011
Agreed Hugh it's nowhere near the same scale, however youth unemployment and underemployment is truly horrifying and is disenfranchising an entire generation from society.

Re: The jarrow march 2011
Once again, I agree with you - not sure what the answer is, though....

Re: The jarrow march 2011
In the current climate there have to be winners and losers sadly, everyone can't win, so the only solutions will have to hurt other people.
I suspect you and I are in the position where we lose whatever so it's fine :D |
Re: The jarrow march 2011
but to be fair, even when we lose, we are still "comfortable"....

Re: The jarrow march 2011
Someone on this thread brought up an interesting comment, concerning jobs are being taken by immigrants.
Employers choose to pay a lower rate of wage, so that immigrants will taken them, as most of there money is sent back home or wasted. No one can expect anyone with a family to take a job on low pay, it just would not work, no matter what the government say, you can get help BUT you have to work so many weeks before getting benefit, but then you are checked out and need a pay slip etc. It just is not worth the hassle. |
Re: The jarrow march 2011
We've a minimum wage, most of the jobs created are crap, so quite appropriately pay minimum wage.
Unskilled, poorly educated, barely if at all literate/numerate Brits turn their nose up at such things. I can't remember the last time a takeaway was delivered by a Brit, either Polish or Asian, house move we had Polish movers, Polish and Asians working at KFC / Wimpy. |
Re: The jarrow march 2011
Ignitionnet, l do agree BUT these companies are allowed to get away with paying the minimum wage, and some companies pay less, and also offer part time work, which means they can sack them before there time is up.
On the news today, a company has been found that they sacked most of there staff, and took them back on again at a lower rate. What this government has to do, promote more jobs, stop making people redundant, promote British companies, and not let contracts be allowed to go abroad, British companies have good record for producing quality products, its about time the government chose it, instead of allowing it to go to slave companies abroad. |
Re: The jarrow march 2011
"British companies have a good record for producing quality products"????
Two words for you - "British Leyland". |

I wholeheartedly agree Cameron is thick just following thatcher sadly can see very similar paterns in his policies. She who caused a generation devestation to many all they did was create half brained schemes. That was stupid which all it did keep you off the streets rather career oportunities. I feel for them I hope it makes a difference its sickening whats happening with youth unemployment they do deserve better. Fear if nothing changes they could be the next generation get 10 years struggle. |

There is absolutely no way, whatsoever, that the plight of the current 16 - 21 year olds can be laid at the foot of either Cameron or Thatcher, the people in charge of parenting policy, welfare policy, I mention those because they're the two most relevant to this discussion, youth training and education while the above were between 2 and 14 and 7 and 19 respectively was the Labour party. The concern over Cameron is that he shows no signs of reversing this desperately awful trend, continuing to allocate resources badly, the only hope is that through welfare and taxation they'll get a grip and accept that, on the whole, 2 parent families do better than 1 and reflect this within tax and benefits rather than incentivising 1 parent families. |
Re: The jarrow march 2011
I reckon someone really ought to be asking the last 'lot' just what jobs they were expecting our youth to take in the future. It was they who opened the floodgates to cheap EU labour which took many of the 'starter jobs' whilst at the same time deluding themselves that we could churn out a generation of graduates and that they'd all somehow find worthwhile and rewarding careers commensurate with their academic achievement. Adding fees into the equation was simply pouring salt on the wound they'd created and adding yet more debt burden on the young. HMG and UK PLC are now truly in between a rock and a hard place! God only knows where all this is going to end but jobs can't be created from nothing (unless you're Labour that is  ) and there's nothing to stop more migrants hoovering up what jobs there are. As the parent of two teenagers I have great concern about their future in terms of education, employment, their tax burden and welfare. Still, "things can only get better" eh?

Re: The jarrow march 2011
There are people up and down the whole length of Great Britain, who are unemployed, and it will get worse.
You cannot produce jobs, if there are no jobs there, yes we have supermarket chains opening up, but there are long queues waiting to be told, yes you can have a job, but then you have to start looking, but l don't know what area is worse than others, as the government don't tell you that. It is no good the government talking about how to solve debt, we have to get people back to work, and get the employment chain running again, it does not help when the government are forcing cuts, or when they award contracts that this country can do, to oversea's companies. To get this country moving again, this is where they have to start again. The government can always open the mines, and bring work and warmth to us. |

Btw for those critical of Thatcher's employment training schemes, I was a victim of one myself in the late 1980s. I was taught how to operate computers and how to type, and haven't been out of work for any significant length of time since. |
