Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
...and is severely annoyed that it can't, because of an inconvenient little thing called the National Veto. The UK Treasury has stated that it will resist any attempt to impose a Europe-wide tax on institutional transactions between banks, not least because up to 80% of the revenue generated by any such tax would come from activity in London.
No matter, in the undemocratic world of European bureucracy, the "constraints of unanimity" could be circumvented by "further changes to the Treaty of Lisbon". So says Jose Manuel Barroso, some Portuguese bloke none of us ever voted into a position where he can either impose taxes on us, or for that matter a position where he can threaten to change the rules in his favour if we try to stop him imposing taxes on us. More astonishing Euro-arrogance here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15090761 |
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
We should be grateful for the opportunity to give the EU more money ,damn cheek if you ask me us even having a veto ,we should ,without further delay renounce all sovereign rights and accept our new overlords

Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
How about a tax on hot air the EU could solve the eurozone debt crisis in a matter of weeks. Seriously how long is it going to take for any politician to have the backbone to give the UK people what they want and allow us to vote on leaving this discredited, corrupt institution. Lets just get to a free trade zone in europe with us having decent relations with our european neighbours because we choose too not because some stuffed shirt tells us all we have to get along.
As far as i am concerned the federal EU dream is simply not realistic and most people in europe are starting to realise that and oppose the idea and the institution. Just making us all one continent won't solve the old problems some think it will if anything i think it will make nationalism worse then it is now, no free trade yes, cooperation in some things yes but federal system and things being decided\run from brussels or by a federal EU i would rather chew my limbs off. |
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
according to sky news on tv now ,france and germany are going to go ahead with it anyway regardless of what we do and Bill Gates(in his role as adviser to the g20) says it's a good idea ...so there you go
|
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
To be fair, even the UK Treasury admits it's a decent idea in principle - *if* it's implemented globally, by international treaty. Gates will be supporting the notion on that basis, I should imagine.
France and Germany can do whatever they want. If they want to go on paying for Greece's party, more fool them. |
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
so if i understand this correctly ,the idea behind implementing such a tax would be to make sure there is enough money in the Euro pot to bail out countries that may default on loans ...like greece ?
|
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
I believe that's the idea, yes. And Barroso would like it if he could impose that on the UK whether the UK likes it or not. Thankfully we still have a veto on tax issues so he can't. But that simply has him thinking that he would like to re-open the Lisbon treaty for renegotiation in order to try to remove the veto on tax.
... all of which means we very much need the Coalition legislation that will guarantee us a referendum on all future treaty negotiations as soon as possible. |
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
So the Germans could not rule Europe by force so now they will do it via a political system and as is the norm the french role over and help them. Sooner we have the vote and leave the better. I never voted to be part of this why should i have to suffer. We need all the money in this country.

It's a percentage charged on every transaction where at least one of the institutions is within the EU. Seeing as 80% of institutional financial transactions within the EU occur in London .... well, do the maths. :erm: :D

The government will "resist" these taxes from the EU.
So, lots of fist-shaking whilst being able to do nothing about Eurocrats going ahead with it anyway. |

Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
I'm waiting on Nick Clegg to come and tell us it's a fantastic idea, wonderful for Europe and Britain, well, 40% of our exports (and 50% of our imports but let's ignore that bit) are from Europe, though of course this would change without the European tariffs.
Bit like the Common Fisheries Policy, Common Agricultural Policy, free movement of people, etc. Clegg and his crew of Eurosycophants I'm sure will have some excuse why this is great. Just as an idea of how sycophantic they are there's a group in the European Parliament - the Union of European Federalists. Its President is a Liberal Democrat MEP. He loves this. |

Dan Hannan for Prime Minister ...
How is it that this country's most recognisable Euro-MPs are also the arch-sceptics? :D ---------- Post added at 10:13 ---------- Previous post was at 09:51 ---------- Nigel Farage puts the boot in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ii0Yc...layer_embedded |

Nice one Chris, my friend Andrew Duff, so obviously anti-British and Euro-sycophantic popped in with a question there I see - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ii0Yc...ailpage#t=275s

Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
Ah Nigel Farage, I was almost sold on him, going by that clip. Until I remembered him making such a plank of himself on Have I Got News For You.
|
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
That just means he's a genuine politician. It's their job to make a plank of themselves on HIGNFY. ;)
|
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
Well yeah but there's good plank and bad plank when it comes to that show and it was the negative for him. He was doing that "I'll ask the questions that the public really want answering!!" thing however he was in a charisma-vacuum at the time and no-one had any interest in (or idea of) what he was talking about.
You know, UKIP style. |

Cameron will tell us that we the public just don't understand and gleefully sign it. After finding a way to weasel out of giving us a referendum of course. Democracy is such an inconvenience within the European project but easily avoided and failing that perverted - the EU can use money paid by member states to flood them with propaganda on the rare occasions they do get to vote on such things. |

Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
Cable in Government is a bumbling fool. TBH I'm glad he's there right now as it is putting to bed some of the starry-eyed nonsense along the lines of 'best chancellor we'll never have' that was doing the rounds prior to the 2010 election. The Lib Dems are performing a useful function right now, lending additional legitimacy to a Government at a time when hard decisions need to be taken (granted, you have said in the past they're not taking all the decisions they should be, but hey ho).
All being well, come 2015 we will have constituencies redrawn so that the level of support required in order to get elected is more or less the same in each, and we will have a Liberal Democrat Party that has shown itself to be an incompetent bunch no longer deserving a place at the top table. All of which, I hope, will mean a true, full Conservative administration from 2015 to 2020. ... and as an aside, based on Ed Millipede's performance with Nick Robinson yesterday, there's little sign of him transforming himself, or Liebour, into a credible contender by 2015. The ship being tugged into Birkenhead docks over Ed's left shoulder was more interesting to watch. Total and utter lack of charisma, credibility, believability, you name it, he's not got it. Anyway, to return to the topic, I wonder what Dan Hannan's chances of getting a seat in the Mother of all Parliaments is. I'd love to see more of him in public life and there is no question that if the British public are ever going to be motivated enough to complain about Europe loud enough for our politicians to take note, they are going to need a domestic cheerleader ... and one not encumbered with the 'negative plank' image that Russ says Nigel Farrage has got. :D |
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...
The idea of Dan Hannan as an MP scares Cameron witless I imagine. He is probably concerned enough at Hannan being in the European Parliament let alone him being the centrepiece of his EU-sceptic MPs in Parliament.
I took care to write EU-sceptic rather than Euro-sceptic there as it seems to be a convenient line of attack for EU-sycophants to accuse anyone sceptical over the ever growing tendrils of the EU of being anti-Europe which of course the overwhelming majority are not. |
Re: Europe wants to impose financial transaction taxes ...

* In the September 2004 issue of The Ecologist magazine, Keiser correctly predicted the 2008 collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac when he wrote, "My guess is that the two stocks that look the likeliest to implode at the hands of derivative-wielding Wall Street financial types (and other fundamentalists) preying on a US economy made weak by cheap money are Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac." * In 2006 he correctly predicted that sub-prime mortgage-backed securities would be the cause of recession by 2008. * In 2007 he correctly predicted the break-down of Iceland's economy in 2008." .. sounds pretty serious to me. |
