Mobo for Phenom II 550 - suggestions?
 

With the grief I'm having in this thread I reckon I might need a new mobo for a Phenom II 550.

Which I think means AM2+ or AM3 or AM3+ , am I right?

Can anyone recommend a good one?

I'm looking for full ATX size, lots of USB sockets, able to take a fair amount of memory, don't need integrated video, want good build quality, don't want to spend more than £90 if I can avoid it.

That looks pretty good. Don't need the onboard graphics but I suppose given the issues I've been having a backup option would be nice :) Bit measly about the mouse/keyboard socket though. I'll stick that one on the shortlist.

This one looks like the front runner at the mo or this one if go for the backup of onboard graphics. I'm guessing it's easy to turn them off if I don't need them? oops, no graphics, misread the description.

The onboard gfx will not create any issues :)

The second ones an Nforce chipset I would stick with Amd with and Amd cpu myself :) unless of course your want to run 2 nvidia gfx

Ah, more choice, just when I thought I'd worked out what I wanted :) That one looks quite good too.

I follow it - I've got an AMD processor, I'm going to stick an AMD (ATI) card in it, might as well have AMD do the other gubbins too. That other mobo has a special nvidia graphics unit that isn't actually a graphics unit, somehow, so you still need a graphics card. Mixing ATI & NV together doesn't sound like a great idea.

Appreciate everyone's suggestions :) keep them coming, will probably wait until next week before I buy stuff

I prefer AMD chips with an AMD chipset board my preference, The AMD chipset supports crossfire the NFORCE chipset supports SLI so if the OP wishes to run 2 Nvidia cards in SLI then he needs a Chipset that supports SLI. Simple enough I thought

I personally have a 990xa-ud3 that is running my 965 happily at 4.1GHz and 2.8 GHz NB, supports Bulldozer and supports Sli.

Not seen nowadays but used to be very common. I used to always use intel chipsets with my AMD CPUs as they always seemed to perform faster on the memory benchmarks.

The reviews I've seen mark the Phenom II 550 as being AM3 - and a possible x2 to X4 unlock with a suitable motherboard and some luck in getting one that unlocks well.

My reply or what I wrote about my system?
In the reply, the post by tizmeinnit is saying about how the second board is based off an nvidia nforce chipset while he prefers to use a amd based chipset with amd set-ups unless you want to use two nvidia gpu's in sli.
The vrms are what deliver power to components and the ones in question deliver power to the cpu cores, cpu-northbridge etc. If these are low quality and you have a cpu which draws a lot of power your board will die.
And the last line I have a gigabyte 990xa-ud3 motherboard which allowed my phenom ii x4 965 to be overclocked to 4.1GHz on the core and 2.8GHz on the cpu-northbridge. My motherboard also has full support for upcomming Bulldozer based "FX" cpu's that amd are briging out shortly and in the 9x0 series amd added support for nvidias sli.

If you want to unlock don't get a 9x0 chipset board .

What I'm thinking of getting is:

• Phenom X2 550 (already got)
• Asus M4A87TD EVO 870 Socket AM3
• Crucial 128GB 2.5" M4 SSD
• WD 2 TB drive (already got)
• Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz HyperX Blu Memory Kit CL9 1.5V
• Be Quiet EP 600W or Be Quiet Straight Power E8 600W

and turning it from my spare PC into my main PC.

Any particular reason for not getting the Crucial? I heard the OCZ had some reliability problems. I don't mind paying £12 more if it gets me better reliability, and a free 8Gb :)

If it's just speed, I'm pretty sure even the slowest SSD is going to seem astonishingly fast to me :shocked:

My Agility shipped with the newest firmware. Updating is very easy and I myself have had no issue with the drive

Yea thing with ssd's is the fast feeling of them is the same no matter the speed because they all have tiny access times and that's what makes programs start instantly etc. So unless you are transferring files from one ssd to another speed makes little difference.

I found the Kingston V+ line to be the best value to be honest. And yes, even a relatively slow SSD like that makes a monstrous difference. Something like 10x faster than a HDD, and you'd have to pay twice as much just to get another 50%.
