internet connection problems
I have a wireless connection to the internet . while i was on the net today i suddenly lost connection .
When i got back on my home page dissplayed but when i tried other web. sites it would not load them. I turned of the mains to reboot box but still nothing happened . All the lights on my virgin box were on that are ment to be on but still no joy. Then i noticed that on my belkin router there is a sighn that looks like the world and this was not flashing which i thought it should be . I pushed all cables in to make sure none were loose then a while later that world light started flashing, i then tried to connect again and this time alls working . Could the belkin box be on its way out , when i pushed wires in they did not seem loose and the world light did not flash straight away so im not sure if this was the problem. Also if this light keeps stoping and i have to get a new wireless box is it a straight forward swop as i have this box security enabled. many thanks |
Re: internet connection problems
you have a lifetime warranty with your belkin router, contact belkin support. they have a live chat option so you don't have to call premium lines. if it needs replacing they will replace it.
|
Re: internet connection problems
Thanks thenry i did not know about the life time warranty
|
Re: internet connection problems
I don't know for sure but judging by your post you have. The old Belkins routers all have lifetime warranties.
open this link, fill it out and submit to speak to an agent... http://en-uk-support.belkin.com/app/...Q2ZHJEaw%3D%3D |
Re: internet connection problems
I have just come home from work to find my internet down again. This time all lights on the belkin seem to be all on but the ready light on my ntl 200 box was out . I rebooted this and all ok for half hour then i lost connection again. when i checked the ready light was out again so i picked up the ntl box to check connections in this and when i tipped box up the ready light came back on with out a reeboot . like theres a loose wire someware . So perhaps its not the belkin thats at fault but the ntl box instead. Would virgin send me another if i phoned them .
|
Re: internet connection problems
yes. tell them what you've just said, its faulty etc. and they should send you new modem.
|
Re: internet connection problems
I have spoken to virgin and there sending out an engineer sat pm
|
Re: internet connection problems
Still have problems , came home from work on thursday and a message was on my answer phone saying many people in my area have complained of the same problem so engineers are working on it and this may be my problem so my appointment is now cancelled .
I phoned to say no i will cancelle if my problem gets fixed , to be told we have allready given someone else your appointment . so an engineer was then booked to come to me on monday night between 4-7 and the guy said its a good idea if i have a new modem as mine is getting old . Today sat. i phoned to see what time my modem may come and also confirmed the monday appointment to be told virgin have again cancelled and now booked again for tuesday eve . Anyway in the meentime my new wifi modem has arrived i phoned to get it acctivated then got put through to a tech . who has got me connected to the net. ( so far no dissconections ) but am unable to connect wifi . My wifi light is on but i have a message at the bottom of my screen telling the LAN wifi card is dissconected so unable to go wirsless . i was on phone for an hour to the tech and we checked my wifi updates are ok . So dont know if its a coincidence that my card has gone down . My son has a wifi laptop but his at work today so i will get him to try his later . If he cant connect wifi what could be the problem . The tech guy said alls well from there end to my home. And to get my LAN card checked by a computer shop. I dont know if the engineer if he comes on tuesday will be able to help. |
Re: internet connection problems
why do you want to connect 1 pc to the hub via both ethernet and cable?
|
Re: internet connection problems
i dont know what you meen , i just want to connect wifi and not have to use the ethernet cable like i have to at the moment .
|
Re: internet connection problems
are you behind a firewall? have you updated the wireless cards drivers? have you tried re-installing the wireless network card?
|
Re: internet connection problems
i have just tried again conecting to wireless , and a message is coming up unable to find a wireless connection.
My son is unabel to connect wireless as well on his lap top. Also if i click on conect to then a list of wifi connections come up my old connection is displayed now with a red cross through and says The savings set on this computor for the net work do not match the requirements of the net work. i dont know what that means. so at the moment i now have internet access but unable to connect wireless. so am lost of what i should do. |
Re: internet connection problems
have you reconnected your belkin device or are you trying to connect to the VM hub ?
the vm hub has a network name and password already set up, look at the back/bottom of the hub. have you gone over the settings on the hub using 182.168.0.1 in your browser. |
Re: internet connection problems
im not useing my old belkin i have a virgin netgear built in wifi
my wire less card allso has the latest updates. when i was on phone to tech. he got me to change the net work name / pass word. In end told me to go to computor repair shop. i know my pc is ok because my sons having same prob. with his lap top. |
Re: internet connection problems
did the tech try remotely? did he do anything to your computer from his side ?
repair shop, they need to be sent to the repair shop. does your laptop or any other device pick up the network when searching for the networks? what security is set up on your computer, firewall? have you gone over settings via 192.168.0.1 |
Re: internet connection problems
as far as im aware he did nothing to my pc from his side.
when searching it does not pick up net work I have norton security how do i go over settings and what am i looking for |
Re: internet connection problems
incompetent agent nothing surprising!. Every time I've called recently which is twice now.. hardly enough to prove this but read about.. support always ask to remotely connect.
anyway I have never used a VM Hub only a SuperHub, not sure whether the interfaces are the same. any who reset the hub to start off with... http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...ICLE_ID=322888 once done, try connecting via the laptop. the network name and password are at the back/bottom of the hub. http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...MER_TYPE=Cable |
Re: internet connection problems
i have tried still no joy , what is number of the tech department . when clicking on to connect to only my old wifi is listed , not the new one
|
Re: internet connection problems
i don't know if this will work for you I'm following SuperHub guide, it might be the it might not be.. hopefully someone else on here can advise too.
grab your sons laptop. download this and run it... http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ once the programs started it'll list networks in your area, take note of the channels in use, don't worry if yours doesn't appear. the channel range your looking at is 1-13.. find which are in use and take note of those channel numbers note in use or vice versa whatever works for you. 192.168.0.1 login advanced settings left hand side > wireless settings channel > set accordingly 802.11 mode > 145 Security Mode > WPA2 all of which above would I think been in use when using your belkins router if not even more enhanced. also make sure the device/router/VM netgear isn't near anything it could conflict with such TV, radiators.. place it in a clear space but not too extreme by means of placing it in an empty room just away from things. try connecting via wireless (laptop) |
Re: internet connection problems
My sons out at present so will do that tomorrow, one thing i get though is when i go to 192.168.0.1 it askes for a pass word . i have to put in admin then change me . ( The default setting ) when in i click on to wireless and i have changed the name there . Is the name there the name that should appear when i click connect to.
Also its the same name as i had before. Does that matter or should you just get two networks come up with same name. |
Re: internet connection problems
no whatever you change the network name to will show up when search for a wireless network.
did you say your system has wireless within it too? do what i said above on your system, if you have wireless capabilities on your system then try it. |
Re: internet connection problems
Thanks for your help thenry, will do that tomorrow .
Just one thing though i googled this problem and there are loads of people with this same problem. |
Re: internet connection problems
you have the vm hub mate, consider yourself lucky you haven't got the superduperpooperhub.
|
Re: internet connection problems
Hi thenry the wife is worried i will mess things up more if i mess around in 192.168.0.1 she says see if the engineer can put it right as were paying for the service , i suppose shes right in a way . He is due to come tuesday eve. Thats if virgin dont cancelle him again for a 3rd time.
I have been looking at bt infinity . If i cant get this running on wifi i may try them as im disscusted in the way we have been treated by virgin. It just seems strange that when i click on the connect to you get a list of all wifi connections around my area but my new set up is not listed . Only my old one which now has a red x through it. I bet its just some settings that are wrong someware . Anyway will have to wait hopefully engineer will turn up tuesday and fix the problem. |
Re: internet connection problems
engineers, techs don't really like to touch customers computers mainly because they don't want to leave themselves open to something negative so give him permission to take control of your systems.
if your belkins router is no longer in use then delete its settings off your systems, there will be a list of your saved network settings delete them. i doubt it would cause to much of an issue. the fact your wireless adapter/chip isn't picking up the network raises questions which is why I told you to do the above. The instructions above are very straight forward, you cannot do anything to bust the VM device and if anything goes wrong all you need to do is get a paper clip and press the reset button on the back. what operating systems are you running on the wireless devices (laptop, desktop)? XP, Vista, 7 ? and what are they as in manufacturer and model. |
Re: internet connection problems
If your wireless settings don't match you need to delete those settings and connect again. Start, wireless, right click network name, delete.
The original hub was worse than the Superhub. |

Anywho, just cropped up in another thread. If your wireless adapter is an atheros you MUST install the very latest drivers to get it to work with a superhub, so presumedly a basic hub too. |
Re: internet connection problems
strange thing my son has just connected an i phone to the my net work , and comes up strong signal with the modems number on so i know its working . But as to why we cant conect with our lap tops then is a mystery.
When clicking on connect too , my connection comes up (i thought it was my old connection as i named it the same ) but it has a red x on it saying the settings on this computor do not match the net work settings. I dont know what this means and how do i get rid of the settings then . That looks like it may be the problem as i say my son has connected an i phone ok. |
Re: internet connection problems
you've literally mixed up settings because you've named the new network on the VM hub the same as your own belkins router. delete the saved settings that were saved to connect to your belkins router and then try again. if you need help tell us what operating systems you want connecting, help with. laptop, desktop etc.
|
Re: internet connection problems
How do i delete settings saved for my belkin router .
Or can i just change the name if i went into the net gear site |
Re: internet connection problems
you can do either but as mentioned above, tell us what operating system your running on each device that has the settings saved so we can advise you further on deleting. xp, vista, 7 ?
|
Re: internet connection problems
I have a lap top with windows vista my sons lap top has windows 7
|
Re: internet connection problems
the method in this link works both in Vista and 7 > http://www.home-network-help.com/del...s-network.html
Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > (left hand side) Manage Wireless Networks > right click the saved network(s) and remove. |
Re: internet connection problems
Before doing this should i first Go into netgear site to change the name to somthing else . If so would i then reboot modem and lap top . Or could i just change the name in netgear then not worry about deleting the other . Many thanks
|
Re: internet connection problems
well your belkins is no longer in use so you might as well delete them saved settings. no reboots required.
delete the settings on your laptops > search for networks > find yours > enter the password (should be on the back of the hub or what ever you changed it to) > connect. |
Re: internet connection problems
