Do Virgin customers want more HD channels

Do Virgin customers want more HD channels and my answer is yes.

IMHO only certain content warrants HD at the moment.

Really cannot fathom why anyone would say no, unless they were blindly defending their inactive masters;)

Can we have a guess on who voted no?

I said no because on my 32" because SD is good enough for me, if I had a 46" I may change my mind.

You don't need a poll. Most customers don't want HD, but a significant minority do.

Well its a very significant minority then with nearly 40% of Sky's and Virgin having HD enabled boxes and double that percentage with HD TV's plus the increasing amount of Freeview HD boxes being sold as well.

I would have thought that as it is VM policy to hold on to their high value customers that HD would have been a priority to hold on to these customers.

Shouldn't the question be "Are Virgin customers willing to pay more for extra HD channels"?

We have already debated that to death on another thread.

But we are talking about Virgin customers - why bring in Sky?

btw, can I ask where you got your stats from, please?

Because you don't have an HD STB?

"HD-ready TV sets are now in six in ten UK homes, with a third of homes receiving HDTV channels"

But some people think some are willing to pay, and others disagree - a poll would show peoples' potential intentions, surely?

Ain't you slightly trying to move the goalposts as in your earlier posting you just stated why don;t we have a poll to see if people wanted more HD channels so thats what l did but feel free to change the wordings of the poll questions if you want to Hugh.;)

But as Mr Henke said "who would turn down extra HD channels if they are offered?"; it's a (mostly) no-brainer, as HD crap content is still crap content, so I wouldn't be interested in that.

However, asking if people would be willing to pay for it, would surely provide an appropriate measure of support for paying for extra HD?

It's like asking "would you like some chocolate?". Most people would answer "yes" (not counting diabetics and dieters). If you asked "would you like some chocolate, but it will cost your £3?", you might get a different answer.....;)

btw, my request for a poll was in response to the post above mine, which mentioned a price

The no charge thing is a complete red herring. What do people want HD for in the main? Sport and Movies = £7 charge. Think most would be willing to pay the extra £3 to gain parity with sky. Obviously not most on here due to the village of the damned mentality.;)

UKTV's planned channels are three HD versions of existing SD channels, and will see Watch HD and Dave HD launch in 2011 and Alibi HD in 2012. The new HD brands will likely follow similar strategies to their parent channels, with Watch HD and Alibi HD launching on pay TV platforms in basic HD packages and Dave HD launching FTA. Freeview, which provides UKTV with its greatest channel reach, is not a particularly attractive platform for HD rollout, forecast to support only 424,000 HD homes by end of year 2011. To reach a significant audience therefore, any new FTA HD channels must launch on satellite and hit the 1m Freesat HD subscribers and 4.5m Sky HD subscribers and Virgin have about 1.8 million HD subscribers as well.

i agree but theres no guarantee everyone will let VM have all the channels and as been pointed out before the channels are sold in bundles so price could be too high

Not true at all. Many people are buying new HDTVs but not all of them will view HD on it.

I know for a fact my parents and most older people do not cae about HD.

But if your TV/set-top box does that, why buy an HD channel?;)

There is a world of difference between a programme upscaled in realtime, i.e. by a box or TV, and a dedicated upscaling platform that can take 10 hours to upscale 1 hour of footage.

Also an sd channel tends to have a much lower bitrate than a hd channel and bitrate can effect picture quality far more than resolution.

John

Good Food HD. Why?
Eden HD. Definite yes. Nature progs look great in HD. Some series(eg Yellowstone, Life) are being shown again on BBC HD.

As there is a limit on capacity, any HD channels must be justified by the added quality. Is there any real point in the Good Food channel being in HD?

Why not? Why sports but not food?Viewers come in all sorts of flavours with some very different interests.Food is colourful and very much something we view with all our senses so I cannot see the problem with the Good Food being in HD.;)

It depends what the channels are - Good Food, Eden and all that I couldn't care, but if it was free, then fine, good for those who like it, I wouldn't watch tho.

If we're talking about Sky Atlantic, I'd rip your arms off to get it.
