Funny place to leave a 4x4...

People were rather surprised to find a 4x4 parked up near the summit of Snowdon. Apparently to drive any car up that far is considered dangerous enough that even the national park officers and emergency services will not drive up there..

To be honest I think the real surprise is that someone used a 4x4 for offroad driving instead of using to ferry their offspring to and from school in a densely populated area.

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

Come on it was near a train track (which is what the car more than likely used.)

Plus a Land Rover was driven to the summit of Mount Elbrus 5,642 metres (18,510 ft); Mount Snowdon is altitude of 1,085 metres (3,560 ft).

So not that hard really.

The difficulty would be determined by the width/quality of the path, not how high above sea level it is. There are plenty of peaks in the UK - all of them less lofty than Elbrus - where you couldn't contemplate taking any 4-wheeled vehicle.

Some people are so stupid you would think they really should have been put out of their misery long ago.

He bought a Frontera!

"50 things to do before you die"

What a pathetic excuse from a selfish individual.. He's done more harm to those that use bye-ways legally than probably all the inconsiderate illegal off-roaders in the UK.

i think dismantling it and charging him for the pleasure would be fair

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

Why not just let him drive it back down?

Chris 06-09-2011 14:07

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

Because some people aren't prepared to accept that the guy's punishment is set by a magistrate and want to find ways of putting their own boots into him.

Don't get me wrong, I think the guy's a complete idiot, but at the end of the day what has he added to the pollution and erosion that already exists on that particular mountainside? Snowdon is possibly the worst day out in the entire UK if you actually care about our mountains and wild places, thanks to the railway and the pub at the top. I can't see how one Vauxhall Frontera has added the sort of damage that some of the mouth-frothing brigade are claiming.

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

I think he should be treated like a rioter and giving a long prison sentence. Now other people are likely to try to do this and there needs to be a deterrent.

Chris 06-09-2011 15:04

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

He has not opened the floodgates on mass unrest or a breakdown of social order and most certainly does not require to be treated as if he has.

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

Why do they not drain it of petrol and then roll it down it would save a lot of time and cost? (apart from the clearing of the debris)

danielf 06-09-2011 15:14

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

I think he should definitely be made to pay for the cost of removing the vehicle. Possibly a fine in top, but that's about it. Nobody will be any the wiser if this guy goes to jail.

So, what's to stop other trying? Far better to stop it in it's infacy than to have copycats - who may end up harming others.

The simple fact that the majority of the population are not utter morons. Hang on... Forget I said that.

To be honest, I'm not usually wanting the law to be heavy handed but with the sentences for the rioters so strict, I'm just feeling that every crime should be punished strictly, which suprises me. In a few months I'm sure that feeling will go away

Well, I thought many of the sentences for the rioters were too strict.

Let's not forget that prison is a rather expensive option (~40k per year per person) when it comes to punishment.

Either way, you can't compare the massive looting and rioting that we've seen with one moron that drives a 4x4 up Snowdonia. The scale and public outrage over the events are rather different.

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

Maybe i'm missing somehere but what's to investigate ? locate the registered keeper ,ask if the vehicle was stolen ,if not ask why he drove the vehicle up there and can he please remove it by driving it back down on his way the police station .If the owner cannot be located then start looking over the cliff edge 'cos maybe he had an accident and is lying in some crevice badly injured

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

I don't understand what all the fuss is about, a guy drives his 4x4 off road.

Surely all the people and the train cause more damage than 1 car?

When I first heard about this story I was hoping they'd discovered Jeremy Clarkson's remains in the driving seat. :D

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

They eventually brought the 4x4 down via the train. He's also now being charged with Dangerous driving which I'm not surprised as the footpath isn't a bye-way with vehicular access.

They're just annoyed that somebody done something off their own back without having to think will anyone be offended, will anyone disapprove, and will I have to ask a jobsworth if it's ok.

they won't make him pay for the train ride because he could have drove it down.

Kymmy 16-09-2011 15:20

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

It's nothing to do with offending someone, just a simple fact that it was illegal and dangerous.. The footpath could be used 24/7..

There's enough excuses for downgrading of byeways to footpaths without this idiot proving them right.. All he's done is to help tighten the laws and restrict those who enjoy off-roading and greenlaning on byeways

The same vehicle has been driven to the top of Snowdon again:

Get it back down via the same route as before then crush it. Then charge the owner for the removal and crushing and ban him from driving for a year or two.

the drive up snowdon is a motorway compared to roads in Bolivia http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/pi...ous-roads.html

Police have arrested a 39yo, they don't say though if it's the same 39yo involved in the first incident.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-n...wales-15141652

Police this time will decide how to remove the 4x4 so there's a good chance it'll probably be confiscated..

Gary L 02-10-2011 13:59

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

Did they throw the criminal damage in for good measure, or did he actually break a stone or two?

Kymmy 02-10-2011 14:03

Re: Funny place to leave a 4x4...

You ever seen a footpath when a 4x4 has been aggressively driven on it? The ruts left will be criminal damage..

As I said early on in this thread just one idiot can do so much harm to legal usage of the byeways.. It's ever so easy for someone to abuse a site which means that everyone gets restricted where it's very hard to open up again a byeway after a restriction.

He's up in front of Caernarfon magistrates next month charged with dangerous driving and driving on common land.
