VM S-t-r-e-t-c-h-y vision - when can we have 16:9 broadcasts?

Everyday I watch Judge Judy on ITV2 in S-t-r-e-t-c-h-y vision = prehistoric 3:4 broadcast widened to 16:9

I notice there still quite a lot of stuff on VM still broadcast in 3:4

Widescreen has been around for 20 years so when can we expect VM to broadcast in proper 16:9

P.S. and yes i know i can watch 3:4 un-stretched but i want to know why it's not broadcast in proper 16:9

Well they were recorded in the last 20 years :)

Not for sure but I think most are in 16:9 on freeview - just not on VM cable

Nope - I mean 3:4 (height:width)- you can look at any ratio anyway around (it's not just a 'TV thing')

There's always someone smarter ;)

It only affects specific channels/programmes - not whooooooooole media networks so your sweeping statement has no meaning

As i say i am no expert on TV i will leave that to Spiderplant

My post was a serious question, who's trying to be smarter?,I had no idea there was a 3:4 format (hence the post),seems a bit of a paranoid response to a valid question if you ask me.

It is inconsistant to quote one ratio as 3:4 and the other as 16:9;)

Re the second comment I was referring to the same programme not a whole platform.

I'll need to do a bit of research myself (haven't watched freeview for months) but I'm pretty confident that some channels being broadcast in widescreen on freeview are not by VM

Re: VM S-t-r-e-t-c-h-y vision - when can we have 16:9 broadcasts?

I can't believe that this question has been seriously asked

Whether you stretch it or VM stretches it it's still being stretched and will never be a true 16:9 format..

Just turn off WSS on your TV and set everything to 16:9

Personally though I'd rather not see Judith Sheindlin's face any more stretched.. I don't think my heart could take it..

Oh on a simple note you could ask VM to take some 16:9 cameras back in time and ask them to film every single 4:3 show with them.. or is that as ridiculous as this request???

... and you could always insist on telling the world you're feeling gay when you wake up in a good mood. You may have pedantry on your side, but most people will assume you mean something else.

The entire TV industry uses 4:3 - without exception - when referring to pre-16:9 aspect ratio. But if feeling right is more important to you than being understood, you go right ahead.

Chris he could have his screen rotated by 90 degrees and be truly watching 3:4 and 9:16 format.. Perhaps that's why he wants the picture stretching to Lowry proportions

Re: VM S-t-r-e-t-c-h-y vision - when can we have 16:9 broadcasts?

There are a number of channels still broadcasting on all platforms in 4:3, notably from Turner Broadcasting (CNN, Cartoon Network, TCM), the various kids and music channels and the majority of the higher numbers on each EPG area. Nothing to do with VM - complain to the broadcaster. I suspect your Judge Judy was not recorded in widescreen as ITV is normally in widescreen.
16:9 adoption has been slower than "the last twenty years" as the US lagged behind until it moved to digital HD standards.

Re: VM S-t-r-e-t-c-h-y vision - when can we have 16:9 broadcasts?

The simple answer is to set the TV to 4:3 aspect ratio. Anything that is not broadcast with a Widescreen ID will revert to 4:3 automatically. Some broadcasters (Eurosport for example) process 4:3 pictures so they are pillarboxed on widescreen TV's. However this then affects anyone watching on an older 4:3 TV, who will still see the black borders.

All VM's channels are broadcast in the format the channel owner gives them. It's the same on all platforms.

There is no reason for VM to make a widescreen programme/channel 4:3

I just had to read the whole thread as I could not believe the naivety of the OP who thought it possible to widen old format television shows, I wonder what he would have made of Z Cars if it was ever to be repeated.:D:D:D

Z-Cars? No doubt Virgin Media would short-change its customers by stripping the colour off the pictures. We don't pay our colour telly licences so they can pull tricks like that. Rage against the machine!
