Rugby World Cup 2011

Well it's getting closer folks so we're going to need a thread for all the action.

;)

After years of relative underperformance, are New Zealand going to go down as just about the biggest chokers in RU history or is home advantage going to work for them?

Me too. Loads of pressure on NZ to perform which should work to the advantage of the other teams. Let's hope it's a spectacular try fest. :)

Not looking forward to it from an England perspective - but then again I felt the same in 2007 and they almost turned it round!!

Apparently there are loads still available in Australia.. :D

ESPN Classic was showing England's RWC 2003 matches the other day. Not sure if they're repeating them though.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2011

Whilst I'd love England to win, I'd also love to see the team who play the most entertaining rugby triumph. Although England have recently shown they can score lots of tries and play an exciting and expansive game, history shows that they've done best in these competitons when they've played tight, utilised their forwards and ground out results. On such a stage I don't see England wanting to risk chucking the ball around too much to win fans amongst the press corps and imagine they'll play in a controlled manner, hoping to minimise risks and win their games by hook or by crook. From what I've seen so far, however, I don't see Manu Tuilagi settling for anything less than 100% power, speed and aggression on the pitch and maybe his role in galvanising his teamates will determine how England play in spite of what Johnson set outs in the dressing room.

Yes a comfortable win but its when it gets to the knockout stages then the All Blacks will feel the pressure and will they then live up to their chokers tag.

All Blacks stats for the last few years...

2010 stats - played 14, won 13

2009 stats - played 10, won 5

2008 stats - played 16, won 14

With that record, I wish the England team were "chokers"......;)

Nice reply but my point is made about the last 5 world cups and when it comes to a crucial match at the knockout stage they have fallen short thus their last world cup they won was in 1987.

And by the way who is your tip.

So according to your viewpoint, England have choked twice in the finals and once in the quarter-finals of the World Cup....:D

My tip? My heart is with England, but my brain is with SA or NZ.

Ah but we were discussing the All Blacks and their record in the world cup but England generally apart from the Woodward era have never been good enough.;)

Re: Rugby World Cup 2011

The point about NZ is that IMHO they've been the outstanding team in the world for years but have failed to translate all that domination into proportionate World Cup success. I haven't got all the stats but, with the exception of 2003, I don't think England have been all that high in the world rankings over the years yet their World Cup results have been better than they'd suggest.

I have a feeling the Aussies are going to cap a rotten 6 months for NZ.

New Zealand's rugby union side are pretty much the text-book definition of chokers in sport. Always the favourite by some distance for the last few world cups but when it comes to the crunch they fail to deliver time after time.

England looking very ponderous and shaky against Argentina. Reminds me of the last world cup. We got to the final then but never really played fluently and I don't see the tournament treating us quite so kindly this time around if there isn't a rapid improvement. Too many penalties could already have cost us dear. Whilst on balance I feel a really tough test is the best way to start a tournament like this, England could easily lose this if they don't get focused and cut out the sloppy mistakes. Johnson will be incandescent I reckon.

Oh and I must say, I just hate the choice of kit. Whose bright idea was that?

Well l have to say England have been utterly shocking in the first half and we were supposed to be well prepared and yes which stupid idiot designed this kit for us as our kit should be all white.

Maybe it's all a plan - the runner up in Pool B will play the winner of Pool A which will probably be NZ. Maybe Johnson feels the only way to be credible RWC winners this time out will be to knock NZ out..... :erm:

Re: Rugby World Cup 2011

World Cups should be about tough games, not 80-3 thrashings of no hopers and if I had a choice I'd want a really tough opener not a stroll in the park. Argentina gave us that. They are a much improved side and have shown England that if they want to progress in this competition they have a lot of work to do. I haven't seen any of the second half yet but the score doesn't suggest that very much changed during the last 40 mins so this is indeed a wake-up call. Great sides rise to such challenges, so it'll be interesting to see whether or not England react positively or implode under the pressure.

denphone 10-09-2011 13:11

Re: Rugby World Cup 2011

But the trouble is in the last 2 or 3 years England have been a average side as their game is based too much on attritional rugby and not enough on playing the more expansive side of the game like the top sides do.

Osem 10-09-2011 13:55

Re: Rugby World Cup 2011

Johnson will want England to be playing the game they need to win not just entertain. If they can do both so much the better but the 2 previous RWC competitions have shown England perform best when they've had to grind out results. IIRC NZ lost a key match against Australia in the recent tri-nations series because they declined to take safe penalty points in favour of tries which never came. Their style is wonderfully attractive for the most part but has sometimes cost them dear when it really matters. The reverse seems to be truer for England - it may not be pretty but it's got them the winners and runners up medals in the last 2 competitions.

They will have to improve considerably even playing the grinding out game to stand any chance Osem but l will still be supporting them even though l am pessimistic about their chances.

Although Australia won 67-5 against the USA they are showing some signs of instability and definitely no signs of their status as favorites to win the contest.

Yes for me l still think South Africa are the team to beat as l am still not convinced by the All Blacks or Australia and England have to up there game hugely even to make the semi's.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2011

We should remember that there are very few 'easy' games these days. The lesser teams have all the incentive to put 110% into their matches against the 'big guns' in order to 'go out with a bang' whilst the top teams need to win well but avoid injuries and match bans to their key players. History has shown it takes a combination of skill, tenacity and a degree of luck to progress to and win a world cup final and I think this time around will be no different. When it comes to the knock out stages, anything can happen.

I wouldn't take much notice of how a team performs at this stage anyway. You don't want to be playing your best now, it's a long tournament.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2011

I'm trying to think which group of players are stupider. Football players or Rugby players.

Watched football yesterday, and some of the stupid things the footballers were doing, which you knew would result in a freekick/penalty, I shook my head and wondered, "Why do it?".

Now watching Scotland vs Argentina, and simarly, two scottish players offside, they must know it will result in a penalty, but they still do it.

Maybe it's the excitement factor..I just don't remember being that excited, heck, even sex wouldn't stop me being careful.

Maybe it's me :D

Nah, they deserved to lose. The number of times they had a chance to run the ball, and decided to just try and plough through the middle was disappointing.

Gives me a chance to cheer Ireland and Wales :D

From what I can see there's only two big games left in the group stages

Ireland v Italy and of course England v Scotland

Yes and we must beat the Scots or else my scottish friends will conveniently keep reminding me of how they beat the English.
