Another reason we love our Macs

1 Attachment(s)
Apparently Mc'Donnalds are to offer free Wi-Fi to their diners so they can surf the net whilst munching on their Burgers

To prepare for this they have added connection instructions to their menu's
as attached screen shot below

Demonstrating yet again why we Mac users just "Love our Mac's"

That has been available for years and once you register your device automatically logs on when you access broadband in any branch that has free wifi, I have found this to be useful many times when visiting one of their restaurants.

McDonalds have offered free wifi in their restaurants for years.. It's operated by The Cloud..

That is (I believe) an American leaflet.

Also, it's worth noting that not only can the Mac make joining a WiFi network as complicated as the leaflet makes joining a Wifi network on Windows, but Joining a Wifi network on Windows can be as easy as that network makes doing it on a Mac look..

Yeah this is slightly old news. I first used their free wifi back in 2008.

Re: Another reason we love our Mac's

To be honest all the leaflet tells people to do on Windows is check the settings are on default, which unless they've changed it would be uneccessary. The rest of the time it'd just be double click, done.

I don't think it's supposed to be news, it's supposed to be a wee chuckle at how much more complicated the instructions are for connecting from Windows compared to OSX.

I won't link to it for obvious reasons but my response to that is what Maddox says about "what PC owners can do that Mac owners can't".

You are right Chris :D thats all it was,

Funnily enough I went in to MacDonalds yesterday with this laptop for the first time. Clicked on my browser, it took me to The Cloud's sign-in page. Put in my details and I was online in seconds.

OoooOOooOOoooo let's set up a thread to tell the world how easy that was on my Win7 laptop...

They've had wifi in the Mc Donald's over stoke for about 4/5 years

edit: re-read the first post. LOL!

I think that it is a good free service and very easy to use regardless of device as my Nokia N8 connects without any issue and the thread is tongue in cheek but also lets others know the service is available.

Re: Another reason we love our Mac's

These days I'd hope any wifi-enabled device on any OS, whether desktop or mobile, would effortlessly connect to a hotspot when available.

I think the point is, OSX seems to have been able to do it effortlessly for a lot longer than anything else, hence two whole pages of instructions to cover all eventualities in two versions of windows, versus half a page for all iterations of OSX, of which IIRC there were 5, or maybe 6, at the time Windows Vista was MS' most up-to-date OS.

Anyways, it's all a bit of fun, those of us with Macs don't really need to post threads to vindicate our choice. We know we're superior. :p:

While I appreciate the humour, that really isn't an appropriate link for a family forum. There are young children looking over my shoulders while I surf the web on a Sunday afternoon and I don't expect I'm the only one.

Russ managed to mention it without linking. ;)

Sorry, and point taken.

Though one wonders why kids would be here.....(Colin wonders)

[Scene opens to a family sitting around a table]
"daddy", says the son, "Can I chat on cable forum with you pleaseeeeeee", using his especially whining voice

Father:"Son, if you do all your homework..and are especially good, then yes, you can come on with me..but just to watch", he says sanctimoniously

Daughter shouts " Get stuf@*%", mother, recoiling in shock"OMG, where did you learn that word!"

Daughter, 13 and precocious:"I was on cable forum last night...that handsome and cute Colin25 used that word, why, is it a bad word?"

Mother:"OMG yes", as always , using her favourite word from big brother. "That is the type of language you would normally learn in the playground...we don't use those words ", saying it in the usually socially dysfunctual way she has

Oh Russ,

when I read that I had no idea what you meant but now I have seen it from another contributor to this thread I am surprised a moderator who is responsible for Forum decorum, you would do such a thing

The site is disgusting and foulmouthed and to suggest such a thing is no credit to you at all, as a man or as a Forum moderator, if you have children and a family you should be ashamed of yourself

Learning "get stuffed" at 13? Half the kids have kids at 13.

ive read somewhere Tesco is also gonna start offering shoppers free wifi which made me laff with all the apps for mobiles out there that allows u to scan barcodes and see if u can get things cheaper elsewhere which will in my opinion will entice more people to use the apps if they dont have to use their own WAP bandwith which they maybe limited on.

It remembers every wireless network it has ever joined, if you have that option checked in System Preferences. I've just looked and found networks there that it's not been near for 3 or 4 years. It is remembering the network name and security type, don't know what else.

Incidentally, it's Mac, after the Scottish surname, not MAC, after Media Access Control. ;)

As Chris has already answered this question I'll just add the screenshot I was going to use to illustrate the point.

Yes, Windows does that to. But what is seemingly being suggested it that it remembers the IP information to, and that if you have static ip set for one wireless network then you don't need to change this if connecting to another.

The fact that people are laughing that the windows instructions are longer than the MAC instructions because they contain information on ensuring the adapter is set to DHCP seems to suggest that MAC users have no need to do this

Exactly, the windows instructions are longer because they're the absolute worst case if your network is currently set up to not use dhcp, whereas the mac ones assume that you're using dhcp so just connect.
If you're using dhcp already on windows it's just a right click, connect to network.
