ITV and Sky have an exclusive carriage deal for the HD channels at present. There is no published date I am aware of for the end of that deal, although it's bound to end at some point when ITV wants to start switching its SD broadcasts off. That could be some years away yet though.

Only exclusive on satellite.

Once again it comes done to money. ITV were presumably asking silly prices to carry these channels when they launched last year. Sky were prepared to pay, VM were (still are?) not.

Same presumably applies to the UKTV HD channels due to launch shortly.

Didn't Sky help out with the infrastructure as part of the deal?

The issue here is that ITV apparently thinks its additional channels are worth more than the market thinks they are worth. It has lost a tonne of advertising revenue over the last few years and it thinks it can plug the gap by getting a bit of the pay-TV action. It has managed to achieve a deal with Sky because Sky feels threatened by Freesat. It is in Sky's interests to make its basic subscription line-up as compelling as possible when compared with the free alternative. Sky is therefore willing to pay whatever stupid amount ITV has asked for.

On the other hand, VM is pursuing a strategy based around TV on demand. It has little to gain by paying over the odds for channels whose original content is largely confined to cycling and the bits of BGT that are so crap even ITV1 won't show them. If carrying those channels in HD doesn't benefit VM's business, then VM won't pay, and we are left with ITV2, 3 & 4 exclusive to Sky. For what it's worth.

Take time and read your first post were you state ITV have an exclusive deal with Sky for the ITV HD channels

Now read the following

ITV was in talks with other providers, Crozier said, including Virgin Media, but the deal was exclusive to Sky among satellite platforms.

But hey what does Adam Crozier know ;)

The same old tired lines , every company wants to much.

ITV2 HD is ITV2’s digital station, it’s available on Sky and it’s bursting with the best bits of ITV2 in high definition. From October 7th, you’ll be treated to your current favourite ITV2 shows in HD, like Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries and The Xtra Factor. If that’s not enough, the unmissable The Only Way Is Essex is available in ITV2 HD, as well as the new series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here Now!

How do I get ITV2 HD?
ITV2 HD is currently only available on Sky and you need to be a Sky+HD customer. You can find out more about Sky+HD and sign up here. If you're a Sky+HD customer you'll be able to find ITV2 HD on Sky channel 118.
http://www.itv.com/channels/itv2/itv2shows/itv2hd/

I know before it said been exclusively on SKY

This forum is something of a biased sample. The actual popularity of any TV channel is determined by BARB viewing figures, not by a straw poll conducted somewhere on the interwebs.

Thats bit like asking why digitise a photo taken in 70's to display on your 'hi-res' monitor, when in fact the monitor has not yet been invented to fully justify a quality photo

I'd guess 'none' of it was recorded digitally ('SD' by your definition) and that most of it was recorded on film/video tape which would not only stand being converted to be broadcast at todays lousy 1080i digital res but in the case of actual "films" could be scanned at as much as 5000 before broadcast PQ stops improving, so you will need to wait along time before you get chance to see those films in their full glory

While many of the classic shows from the 60s and 70s were shot on film and could be rescanned in HD, have any of them actually been rescanned for ITV? I thought they were broadcasting from the same old PAL videotape and upscaling it.

Who knows what res they scanned them in the first place & if they're showing them directly from tape they'd easily upscale it to HD, but either way they would benefit from being shown in HD. The 'old PAL videotape' still captured faaaaaaaaar more detail than lousy 1080 res we are being treated to at the mo

I've seen a few of the old Sean Connery Bond movies in HD on my telebox and they are clearly much better than in SD

Really? What resolution would you expect to get from the tapes commonly in use when film prints of Batman, The Professionals, The Saint etc were being copied over (I'm assuming the tape format would be Betacam, or one of its successors)? So far, I've not been able to find any source that suggests that family of professional recording/mastering tapes was capable of capturing resolution in excess of 1080. Discussion of quality regarding those formats seems to revolve around the composite recording technique, which AFAIK would not improve the resolution of the image.

Again, the question is, have they gone back to the original prints and remasterd the broadcast tape, or are they upscaling? If the former then it's no surprise it looks better. If the latter then all well and good, but as you can get home equipment that does a perfectly competent job of upscaling, it draws us back to the original issue ... What, really, is the advantage in having an HD version of a channel on your EPG when that channel's output consists largely of upscaled SD programmes?

The main point should be,

If you get them and they're free do you really care if some of the content is not HD?

I was really disappointed recently when ITV broadcast the original Star Wars trilogy. All 3 were broadcast in 4:3 and were clearly not HD. I couldn't believe how terrible it looked. It's 2011 ITV, not 1985!

ITV 4 HD shows cycling , motorsport , Darts , football , films in HD , ITV2 HD has a decent amount of HD , but I agree ITV3 HD can be patchy. I personally like having them as theirs sport and movies in HD plus I find it handy to be able to record a show when repeated on ITV2 HD when a clash occurs on its original airing on ITV1 HD.

Once people start leaving! surely it would be better to add more HD to stop them in the first place,as once they go they may not return.

I have a feeling they will probably give the same answers though.

this is the reply from itv viewer services

Quote:

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for your enquiry regarding HD services.

ITV2HD, ITV3HD and ITV4HD are available exclusively to Sky HD viewers only. ITV is always happy to negotiate with all broadcasters for carriage of its services but I have not been informed of any plans to change the current arrangement. However, if changes are to be made an announcement will appear on our website in due course. Meanwhile, I have passed your enquiry to our Channels Manager and I’ll be in touch shortly if further information is available.

Once again, thank you for taking the trouble to contact ITV.

Regards

ITV get a slice of the £10 HD charge on Sky, on VM it would have to come out of the XL pack charge.. might be why it's taking a while to sort? Just my thoughts :)

Chris 22-08-2011 18:58

Re: Itv2,3,4,hd

This is very likely. ITV has been desperate to wring more earnings out of its channels which is why they went for encryption on 2/3/4-HD, despite being partners in the Freesat programme, where by rights all of those channels should have been from day one.

l suspect you are right but a question is do you think Virgins tv packages are inflexible to some extent DF.

possibly for some people, but most are enjoying the extra HD, TV choice, Music On Demand, ESPN etc included already...

Most people don't want to pay any more and VM are probably trying to get the best price for their customers.

stop the slating, people including myself ask questions on twitter on the phone email the ceo office to try n find things out.
And all some people do is slag off moan. Look what happened to Big Red he left the site after giving some very slightly inacurate info as things can change but the info he did bring was good.

Exactly. Posting replies of the word 'no' worded slightly differently isn't good information, its just an excuse to post.
