Super Hub "IP Flood" Detection

1 Attachment(s)
I hope this may help other new users to the Superhub and may be get me some answers from the more experience forum member

I took delivery of my Superhub yesterday, took my Time Capsule out off the network, and replaced the whole network with my new VM hub

The wired result to my mac was very good 31 meg down 3+ meg up perfect

But the wireless performance was awful 3 meg up 0.4 meg down, even within 10 feet of the hub

So I configured my Time Capsule to go back into the network and just use the Hub as a modem , wireless speeds now back to normal

but today at a loose end I tried again, as I really only want to use one device if possible, I left the time Capsule settings as my original changes, took it out off my network completely and just switched back the wireless on the hub

Wola speeds on wireless at full belt, so I went back into the Hub to investigate, it seems that when I switched food detection on my speeds drop to 3meg, when I switch it off my speed are 30 meg

so why is that ? and perhaps more pertinent why is the hub shipped with flood detection switch on? if it slows the wireless part down so much and causes customer dissatisfaction

The attached is my readings using the wireless function of the Hub at a distance of 10 meters from the HUB

Re: Super Hub "IP Flood" Detection

The IP flood detection issues have been known since the device launched and one of the first things people are recommended to switch off.

Although I though the recent firmware meant that it was either off or didn't effect the connection now.

Thanks for the reply Stephen

Well I received my Hub yesterday, and there was no mention of switching flood detection off, I only stumbled across it by accident as I was setting up the HUB to go into bridge mode so I could use my Time Capsule, and one of the steps was to switch off flood detection

Had the hub performed yesterday as it is performing now I would have been on these Forums singing it's praises, as at the moment it is really fast and solid both wired and wireless

I think this message needs to go out to all new users so their experience out of the box is a positive one

Thanks again

I didn't mean officially. Most people on the forum aree aware that this is something to do to improve the superhub connection.

I take your point

but I have sympathy for all the poor souls who don't know about these forums and are persevering with the problem, when all they need to do is just un-tick a box

Hopefully release 28 will fix it for future users :)

Strange when i got my hub installed it already had the firewall and flood detection disabled, I guess its down to the installer who sets it up for you maybe?

also hows your time capsule running with the hub? Wouldn't mind trying that with mine but i was going to wait for the official bridge mode :)

My hub came as a self set up so did it all myself, and didn't know about disabling flood detection:(

I disabled food detection as part of setting up my Time Capsule following this excellent guide here

The TC works as it did before taking care of the wireless part of my network, backing up from Time Machine, and acting as a network drive, but you do loose the ability to run a second Guest Network

This seems to happen as you assign a new IP address to your hub so it stops the hub assigning an ip address to the guest network,

So if you can live without a guest network on your Time Capsule, then it woks perfectly, the big advantage for me is,

I can continue to back up via Time Machine, access the data on the TC's Drive and get a far better coverage using the TC's wireless function

following the instructions above the hub now acts just as a modem, with the TC taking care of the rest, took me about 10 mins to set up

It wouldn't be the installer. I am sure the most recent firmware automatically had the flood detection disabled.

Hi Stephen

I can only tell you my experience, and food detection and firewall was not disabled on the Hub I received Saturday 02-07-2011

The Firmware details on my hub are
Software Version "V5.5.2R26"
Hardware Version "2.00"
Maybe I don't have the latest version,

Once these were disabled the hub works brilliantly, good wireless range and solid speeds,

Initially I was disappointed with the HUB and it seemed to only confirm all the negative stuff I had heard about it,

But once these two were disabled the hub sprang into life and I was very pleased with it

The point I was trying to make was, there must be a way for VM to disable flood detection and firewall prior to shipping

Then customers first impression out of the box would be positive, not negative as mine was

I got my hub on June 2nd. Mine came with the same version as yours Kenoliver. My IP Flood Detection & Firewall were on and still are. I don't seem to have any issues with mine :s

I'd be amazed if the R25 firmware "fix" for the IP flood detection issue wasn't just a case of them ignoring whatever it was set to in the interface. It's a pretty pointless feature to have on a home router anyway.

Turning off the firewall could certainly have some effect but I seriously dobut that it has actually been possible to run the IP flood protection code for some time now. If somebody can demonstrate a repeatable test showing a difference between on and off I'll be interested to see it as it will knock some of my cynicism about the hub firmware coders.
