One week on with 100Mbit on VMNG300

Well... what do you expect this post is going to say?

Since install, not one reboot of my router or of the modem, I've had this VMNG300 since I got 50Mbit when it was first released.

All devices connected via wireless and I've been using loading the modem as hard as I can to see if I can get it to fail, and I can't :)

Why oh why couldn't Virgin have put a modem in a decent router, the wndr3700 is brilliant, that would have been a great starting point for any all in one design!

For those who are still having problems with their superhub, don't accept it, it isn't right, the device shouldn't reboot or require a reboot. The device isn't performing as it should. Complain, complain and complain some more.

The VMNG300 is faultless, choose a router of your own, and browse happy!

Ive the same experiance, my net has been flawless since the vmng300, why couldnt they just cellotape an ambit and a d-link and chuck them in that stupid big sooperhub casing!

Re: One week on with 100Mbit on VMNG300

Because that would "increase complexity for customers" if the tape fell off.

I quite agree with OP. I didn't even allow a Superhub to be connected when the tech guy arrived.

*In before VM reps arrive to say how it's going to break on 100Mb in the near future, but judging how long it's taking them to defecate the mythical 'modem only' mode I suspect it might be some time yet.

Its not bickering boss honest ..

Although to be honest the "Superhub Defence League" sounds like a great title for a film ..

I could be the mad professor and Masque the Captain America type person .. except instead of a shield he'll have a Superhub ..

In other news, I don't think there is anyone in the whole wide world of forums that likes the Superhub more than the VMNG ..

The VMNG is king .. but the Superhub looks good :D

See no bickering ..

Yup!

I think the problem is windows users who are conditioned to restart anything at the moment it even has a hint of a problem. If you have the patience to wait, i don't know 30 seconds or so the need to restart will probably have passed.

Well I had R27T2 firmware pushed to my 'Super Hub' today and I stuck it in Modem Mode within 2 minutes, let's see how it goes :)

(advised no more stock of VMNG300 left btw)

The damn thing spontaneously REBOOTS ITSELF several times most days. Patience or Windows has nothing to do with it.

Does it do it when you visit particular websites or is it sporadic? when I was on BT the home-hub would restart its self if I uploaded photos to image-shack but was OK. with nearly everything else

Don't mean to be rude, but my point is that I've pushed the VMNG300 and my router to try to make them fail, they haven't had an easy week. Over 2.5tb of WAN data over wireless in one week (so not counting LAN traffic over wireless), you have moved 117Gb in 38 days!

If you tried to move that much data over wireless on the superhub it will probably reboot...

is that what they stated R28 would be or is this another one before R28 is released?

They did state the next release was R28

This is pre-release, I assume a work in progress before the official version. All I know is Modem Mode and my own networking kit back in play is a joy - but I still would have preferred a vmng300 back from them :D

That "Transmit rate 145" may have a lot to do with it staying up for more than a few days at a time. Mine was much more stable in 145 mode but it means network transfers are intolerably slow. Of course if you only have the one machine on the network in the same room as the hub it would probably be OK.

No; thats the speed that my wifi card maxes out at; its on 300 MB on the hub :) this is a 2+ year old laptop:dozey:

Re: One week on with 100Mbit on VMNG300

Ah. My laptop supports 300Mbps and doing a large network transfer using it fails (I checked it with a TrueImage backup). After it fails the only way to reconnect with any WiFi device is to reboot the hub. I have had the same thing when set to 145Mbps but that may just be the number of different wireless clients (mostly smartphones) or something else entirely.

So it looks like yours didn't need rebooting because you haven't subjected it to any significant load over that period. That probably goes some way towards explaining why others are complaining and you aren't.

I know the superhub has WiFi issues. I've no idea what causes the random self-rebooting reported by some people though.

Maybe; i'm buying a new mac mini to use with my tv in a couple of months and i'm pretty sure that does 300 mb/s wifi so ill report back then :)

also no idea if this is any use to you

It seems to be completely random. It even does it when no computers are switched on.

I'm not sure what you were trying to draw my attention to but as I scanned through it I noticed WakeOnLan mentioned - that's something else that doesn't work properly with the SuperHub.

I don't know either but i'm not that fluent with networking and there seemed to be alot of details on there that could be useful LOL

How do you test wake on lan?

kwikbreaks 23-06-2011 17:14

Re: One week on with 100Mbit on VMNG300

I use it through LogMeIn if I want to wake up and use a home machine remotely. It used to work fine when I was on 20Mbps but I had to resort to port forwarding to a single machine with the hub. Now I've piggybacked a router on it I can't make it work at all. I'll try it again when my modem turns up.

CEO's office, the guy that arranged the unreleased firmware. Or rather, he said the VMNG300 wasn't really suited to 100meg. I wasn't going to argue the toss since I'd bagged the firmware to enable Modem Mode and I'd come round to the fact that getting a VMNG300 would only be until it burnt out and I'd be sent a SH again anyway

(well I keep telling that myself to make me feel better, I *did* really want a VMNG300 back!)

VM offered me the old modem back when I had cancelled my services only to tell me 2 weeks later that there are no modems available in the UK.

I cancelled my services once and for all...

I was wondering myself as the replacement hub arrived by courier the day after I was promised one on the forum. The (apparently brand new) vmng300 arrived by normal post 3 days after I was promised it - I guess the hubs are handled by some central facility but the modems are just posted out by the ceo office staff.

Unless they are refurbing the returns from upgrades they will eventually run out but maybe by then the firmware will have got a bit closer to fit for purpose but it sure as hell has a long way to go to meet that standard. Just allowing it to be used as a modem isn't really a proper solution. IMO VM would be well advised to grasp the nettle and get some new kit design sorted out before it gets enormously expensive to replace those in the field as people understand that rebooting a router frequently to get it working again isn't the norm.

Can You Possibly Do Some Speedtests please?

Would Be Interesting To See the Results :)

Did all of these at peak time, around 18:30, IMO not bad speeds for peak time! Also did a test with a torrent and got 11.8Mb/sec download, so still getting great speed on torrents even at peak time.

The Paris server is normally good for tests.

100meg is easy for me to achieve, but I can't say the same with the upstream, only getting 5-6meg thanks to ~95% utilisation across all 4 upstream cables in the local area network :( ETA fix 8th July, we'll see.

I'll join in the fun, these are from Telford (Shrops) - with a Super Hub running R27T2 firmware;

to Brummy-land;
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/06/1.png

to Paris;
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/06/2.png

(oh and yes, these upstream speeds are good, but it's best not to assume they've fixed it, it could be 4-5meg in a few minutes).
