Who was your first isp and what year was it
Dosnt matter if it sucked lol. Jus post what ur first ever isp was :dozey:
Mine was Pipex I first got internet around 2004-2006  |
Re: Who was ur first isp and what year was it
1996/1997, Mistral Internet, ISP in Brighton.
|
Re: Who was ur first isp and what year was it
Supanet in 2000. Thankfully not for long.
|
Re: Who was ur first isp and what year was it
NTL, cant remember what year but at one point it was at a massive 2MB!
|
Re: Who was ur first isp and what year was it
1988/9 - Decnet (though not actually an ISP more of a work line especially as it was pre-internet) After that I had dial-in to UMRCC in early '90s and Demon by Mid '90s..
|
Re: Who was ur first isp and what year was it
Freeserve dialup in 1999, when it cost 1pence a minute!
Then when Cable came along in was Cambridge Cable around 2000-2001, before it came part of NTL. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
The first one I remember was Totalise in about 1998. Then Cable and Wireless in 1999. Got Broadband shortly before NTL took over in 2000. Stayed with NTL/Virgin media until about 2007. Been on Be broadband ever since.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
1995 Demon
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Screaming.net back in 2001 on dialup.
It wasnt bad as it was free after 6pm but it quickly became over subscribed and getting online took ages to connect. Then it went over to World Online. They were dreadful. Then it was ntl and have stayed with them through to Virginmedia. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
NTL, on their 3-2-1-0 telephone tariff, around late 2000 or early 2001 IIRC. Then NTL broadband on 512K, uplifted to 600K and 750K (I think ...). Moved off-net then and went to Virgin.net dialup (so still NTL really) and stuck with it ever since. Got their ADSL when the exchange was enabled; these days with BTW having done some infrastructure work hereabouts I normally get 2.5Mb, occassionally rising to 2.75Mb for a week or two once in a while. Not bad, given that the line length is 4 miles or more.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Jones Cable Leeds, in 1994.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
C&W, at 33.6kbps in 1996, or so I am informed by my son who was 15 at the time and an early computer/internet geek.
All I remember was how incredibly boring it seemed. :) |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
1996, Virgin.net dialup I believe.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
AOHell. for about 2 days in 95' - 96' I think it was? On 14.4K internal modem. Then gradually moved up to 56K.
I remember paying Nildram £57 a month for 512K ADSL. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
AOL (shudders) back in 2000 I believe on 56k Dialup

Dial into work. 1994/5 IIRC.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Compuserve about 1996. When that merged with AOL was just right to change to East Coast Cable.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
I remember constantly getting sent CD's from AOL, Freeserve, Yahoo, Compuserve, etc back in the dial up days.
|

Currant Bun which was offered by The Sun!!! Must have been around '99 or so. Then I recall moving onto Freeserve...
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Cable and Wireless dial up
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
1997/8 Cable & Wireless Dial-Up!
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
1996 Virgin net at 1p/min (Dialup) then one of the first to go to Screaming net (Plusnet) as it was the UK's very first flat rate internet solution.
When Broadband became available switched to BT mega fast 512kb/sec stingray ADSL offering, well mega fast compared to dial ups approx 3k/sec rate xD |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
AOL in 2000 l think
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
AOL dialup late 90's then Telewest broadband.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Force9 (now PlusNet) in 1998. Technically I still have a dial up account with them - just never use it.
Changed to NTL in 2003 as they were offering unlimited dialup and phone for £25 a month. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Compuserve around 1995

compuserve (via work subscription) c 1992 then Demon c1993
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Compuserve about 96-97 at an amazing 21.6 Kbps. After that madasafish, bt, demon then BT Broadband.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
I started off with x-stream (freel dial up connection) - then moved onto ntl dial up.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
AOL dial up sometime in the 90s. I then "progressed" via freeserve dial up to a nynex dial up (predeccessor to C&W, NTL and VM), before nynex finally introduced broadband via STB to my area.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
I got my first modem a US Robotics 33k dial up modem which had a flash update to take it to 56k.
That was with Global Internet now Madasafish (I still have a web domain with them). |
I started with Force 9 in the late 90's on a 14.4k modem and then moved on to ntl cable at 128k :)
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Mine was AOL dial up in 2002,moving to VM cable broadband in 2006.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
I think it was Freeserve which I think was around '97 '98 I had just made the move from bulletin boards iirc.
Edit: maybe it was UKREG, then freeserve... |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
First one ever? around 1994/5 on Pipex on a 99 hour trial program (including TCP/IP stack as it was on Win 3.11) that dialled a free number. I worked out what file it created in the system that you could delete and start again
First proper one was a local one in Southampton that used to run lines on Videotron so didn't have to pay any call costs only a subscription fee, long before Freeserve. Used to be a nightmare to actually get connected in evenings and weekeds though, lots of redialling! |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
For me it was Compuserve (or something like that) that was then taken over by AOL?. I remember compuserve very well because we used to get the free trial discs in the pc mags every month. Just used to keep setting up a new account for a free months trial lol. Was using a 14k modem back in those days to.
The first propper 1 all inclusive ISP would have been Freeserve |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Started with FreeServe dial-up in 1998 using a 28kb/s modem.
Got NTL cable in 2003, should have been the 128kb/s service but they messed up on the install dates and gave me 600kb/s as compensation, I've been on 10Mb/s service for several years but now it's seriously deteriorating I'm considering a move to BT Infinity. I still have the "Freeserve" dial-up, now run by Orange, as it comes in useful sometimes! |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Ah, memories of the days NTL used to sell 128k as 'broadband'. :D
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
First isp OMG I'm ashamed to admit aol in 97 v.5, I think the instillation disk actually came free to a Domino's pizza box that again ashamed was order thru sky interactive!!! but thankfully BCM came along and I ditched both sky and aol.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Compuserve
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
I have chosen to forget the horror of pre BB with NTL.
All those run off and fail to deliver ISPs because they couldn't actually service the members they did have especially if one was a cable phone user.AOL were the only ones who came anywhere near providing a service to cable telco users. but you still got cut off after two hours. Oh the fun year of of waiting for C&W to provide a Free 24/7 dial up service to my area only for them to withdraw it two months after I got the disc.. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Does anyone remember the ISP Redhotant? hehe
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
As I had a Cable phone line I had to use an ISP that offered it through that line as many at the time insisted on BT lines so we went with AOL.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
1994 ??
ComTel which later became CableTel who in turn rebranded as NTL Aahhh the heady days of dialup. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
mine was Currentbun from the sun and still makes me laff now lol
Back in around 1997ish i think it was on 56k |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
NTL dialup, think it was around 2000 - 2001.

i was on AOL for years on Dialup. I still have an account with them which i use from time to time i dont pay for it tho.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
My first ISP was 'Vossnet' probably going back to the early nineties.
Unfortunately, I didn't grasp the concept of a local rate call for Internet and found myself dialling a national number to get online. Fortunately, there wasn't a fat lot to do at the time and I moved onto Netcom on a 0845 number and stayed with them. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Demon about 1996, then aol then ntl about 1998 through my stb 128k!!
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Freeserve in 1998 with a 33k modem in my Win98 PC.
Switched to NTL dialup at some point, then 600k broadband when a 98-XP upgrade meant my modem didn't work anymore. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
swinternet from software warehouse in the mid 90s. I think it got swallowed up by freeserve eventually? Been with Telewest, then VM for about a decade now :)
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Tiny Dial-up 1998. It came bundled on a mates PC (obviously bought from tiny computers). Was an 0845 so not free but was as cheap as I could get because my Dad wouldn't pay for a subscription.
Switched to Xtream for a while from 1999 until It got to the point where even an hour of dialing couldn't get a connection. Eventually wore my Dad down and we got AOL, not my best decision but it was mostly reliable. Then in 2000 or 2001 we got Cable and wireless broadband through the pace stb I had in my room. Think it was 512k. Been with cable in one form or another ever since asside from 1 year when I lived in an un-cabled street and went with SKY BB. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
AOL dial up,2002,it was ok for the time but£15 a month was steep.:)
|

2002 AOL dial-up. I miss the sounds of the modem, though not after 10 at night.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it

Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
95ish Demon Internet.
I remember some of the conversations... "Hello Demon Internet?" "Hello, your Black Romp is down" "It Might be your Modem Sir, What modem are you using?" "US Robotics Courier V.Everything" "Ok Sir, I'll get in touch with our networking people and let them know the Black Romp is down" I still have that modem, and it still works. |

Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Freeserve was the first, then BT, switched to NTL afterwards after BT said we was using the internet too much.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
it's called the V.Everything because it supported everything, in fact the only thing it doesn't support that came out since then is the V.92 protocol. Security including ringback security - no problem. it's a hell of a piece of kit. The saying was 'If a Courier modem can't connect, it's not the Courier's fault' They also supported upwards speed negotiation. If they retrained on the line then they would seek the fastest stable speed. Most modems only retrained downwards. Amazon still list them between 192 and 322.
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
globalnet dial up 1997 -1998, freeserve dial up 1998 - 2000, then Blueyonder 2001 - present, was the first broadband I had, 512k... That blew me away at the time...

Prior to the internet there was FIDOnet, bulletin boards with dialup access using FrontDoor as a gateway to RemoteAccess Bulletin Board Systems. and X00.sys - Ray Gwinn's Double Aught Buckshot driver to give DOS access to more than 2 serial ports, BlueWave Offline Message reader for emails etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FidoNet |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
I started on Enterprise (based on the Isle of Man) and had a local PoP 0845 number. They are still going now and they offered a fantastic service. I then moved over to BT <spit> as they brought in an 0800 number for dialling up.
They were promptly sacked when they got rid of the 0800 number and / or brought caps in so it was off to ntl: for me after that. |
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
Was Enterprise out of this World? :-x
|
Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it
My first ISP was the original 'tenner a month' guys at Demon in 1994.
They charged 10 quid a month for a static IP dial-up service where the customer had to pay for the BT calls. I remember having to dial-in to their BBS to download bits of software which allowed me to run the connection - words like Trumpet windsock still send shivers down my spine. MS DOS 6, then Windows 3.1, floppy discs - those were the days! :erm: john |
