Virgin blocking certain sites?
Hi all
I need your help please I have a D-link 685 which appeared to have started blocking website access to certain sites, however Ive just tried taking the the router out going straight to the PC and it still does not work! Is this a problem with Virgin?? When I try to access : www.photobucket.com or www.mountune.co.uk The browser just hangs, ive tried firefox, chrome and IE9 and my iphone, none work or load these sites. Ive just tried swapping the router out and it still does not work! Is this a problem with Virgin?? Please help! Thanks;) |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
I presume the first one is photobucket..
Both work for me.. It's more than likely to be a DNS or routing problem which you;re not he first one today to complain about.. |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Yup first one is photobucket (corrected now)
Is there any way I can fix this? Or is it virgin who need to fix it? This site (cableforum) is also painfully slow. ---------- Post added at 21:19 ---------- Previous post was at 21:18 ---------- And not loading fully or correctly :( Any fixes? |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Try this as a workaround http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/35250238-post5.html

Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
both work fine for me dude, but that being said, i use the google dns servers.
If you fancy changing some settings (which is easy so dont worry) try using the google dns servers and see if it helps. The following will take 30 seconds tops: Click on start, control panel, network and sharing, manager network connections. Right click your network connection and click on properties, this will launch a connections properties windows. Click on ipv4, properties, click on use the preferred dns servers and enter the following: 8.8.8.8. 8.8.4.4. and click on ok. To confirm the new setting you can click start, run, type in "cmd" and hit enter. This will launch a command prompt, type in "ipconfig /all" and hit enter. This will spit out all network connection info, the bit you want to look for is dns servers and make sure the ones you just entered are in there. After that you are sorted, open IE again and give those sites a try. |

Just tried that, followed the instructions exactly to the the letter but did not work though? What have virgin done? Thanks ;) |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?

It is a routing issue and according to other forums it is not just Virginmedia related. |

That did not work either. Is a routing issues something I can fix? Is it being fixed? Thanks |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Same here. Certain sites just not working. I can ping them but can't connect. Been like it for a few days now.
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Getting DNS server errors now on websites that were working 30 seconds ago.....
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
No problem with either site here.
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
It seems to be happening in waves. I can't get to the bbc news site now but it was perfectly fine a minute before.
And its ok again. Could even be an attack on some critical infrastructure that is causing the sporadic issues. |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
yeah changing dns wont fix dns issues. although it always helps to stop using VM's dns :p It wont fix this paticular problem
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Well the main BBC website has been slow for me since yesterday. Not bothered about the technical info yet as it keeps coming and going. But deffo the BBC main home page has been slow and cant often goto another site without first closing the page and re-opening another browser page.
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
If it is someone trying to bring down the internet, I wish they would stop it.
As its "B" annoying! Apps on my iphone for photobucket work but not the website :( |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Will this ever be fixed?
Photobucket still not loading |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
I was having problems on some sites yesterday , but all seems OK today ..
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
The issue is still ongoing though.

Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
So it's a virgin problem?
Still can not get into photobucket at home through virgin?? Will it 100% be sorted by 6pm today? Does anyone know? |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
its more severe then they may realise, its certianly not limited to https sites and a few banking sites. At a guess I would say I cannot access about 20-30% of the net without a proxy.

I should imagine even Masque cannot answer your question as it will be up to the network guys to solve. |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
:(
I hope they fix it soon it's very annoying now Surely they must be getting thousands of calls! |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Of course it's annoying and frustrating for quite a few users. Won't make it be fixed any sooner than it can though.
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Not sure about anybody else but the last 5 minutes or so web pages have been loading fine again; and faster then they ever have done before; touch wood this lasts
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Is there a VM update on this as its still not working and its now past 6pm?
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
I don't have a problem with the 2 links on the first page but i can't get Megashares to work, it works on BT though. :(
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
I'm no expert but I'm thinking this isnt a routing issue.
I can get the header/title of a page to load, but then the browser stops and you are left with a blank page. If it was a routing issue, you wouldn't get to the site full stop. I think virgin are doing something with their DPI and for whatever reason it is knobbling certain sites immediately after you connect. This would also explain why traceroutes show no issues. The DPI dosent see the contents of them as a problem so dosent intervene, while using a web connection obviously brings back the page and its contents which the DPI can then inspect and do its thing. Exactly what that is remains to be seen. |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Conspiracy theory!
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Hi Skie
This is just what has been happening in my post: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues that I posted a couple of days back. Just getting totally blank screens and thats it. Still virgin are still saying it's an issue with individual sites :D |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Quote:
a normal routing issue stops all connectivity or perhaps slows down speeds. this seems to be tcp packets getting corrupted. As he said sometimes sites partially load, and the upload test on speedtest.net also sometimes starts but then gets cut off. In all cases udp and icmp are fine. If it is inspection gone wonky I would also hazard a guess VM may be waiting for 3rd party support from their supplier hence the long length to fix. |
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
And its not like I'm just seeing one page cut off as if it was just me timing it badly. I can middle-click a bunch of links over a few minute period, see the titles of the pages appear in the tabs then go to the tabs and see nothing but white. On certain sites that are regularly being affected. Obviously something is getting through but then being cut off.
|
Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
It has to be a VM problem as I am on BT and when I clicked n a VM link on this forum it took ages to load compared to any other link.
This leads me to beleive it is a VM routing problem rather than a DNS problem, unless of course you have another reason. |

Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
This is nothing silly like Virgin carrying out some sort of monitoring software testing or blocking or something like that?
Ive called them twice and formally registered a complaint as the service is currently not fit for purpose. |

Re: Virgin blocking certain sites?
Your timed out to mountune just means the routers are not accepting or repesponding to a ping. It happens to me on my BT connection.
