Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hi All,
I have just had a virgin media engineer come to my house to fix my problem.. which as I tried to tell the call centre on the phone it's not a hardware issue (or software) issue and it's def to do with virgin's routing. Two things: World of Warcraft gets to 90% log in and then disconnects and certain sites work (youtube.com is ok) and some don't e.g rarlab.com (makers of winrar) When I fire up my browser (Firefox, IE, Chrome) I can load youtube.com with no issue, however for example Rarlab.com just hangs and the page never loads. When I connect to my VPN (so I can watch US TV shows) I can connect to both rarlab.com and also play World of Warcraft. I also have a 3G dongle which again can connect to all these sites/games. Here are some tracert's YOUTUBE.COM VIA VIRGIN - WORKS Quote:

Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hmm.
I get there fine. I do use the google dns servers though: Code:
Tracing route to rarlab.com [217.70.129.242] |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hi Skie
Just to add I have tried it through both Virgin and OpenDNS and Google's DNS service - I dont think this is a DNS issue but I Could have always missed something. Can you get to rarlab.com okay via your browser? |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Yep, via browser was fine.

Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
I decided to upload a video of what's happening to youtube, the quality is quite low but just good enough to see. Basically I do this:
Show the IP address (to show it's on virgin) go to youtube.com (which works) go to rarlab.com (which doesnt) Start the vpn Show the IP address (showing a vpn IP address) go to youtube.com (which works) go to rarlab.com (which works) This shows the routing is something virgin's side? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ima7wH1DgE |

all I can say is rarlab.com works here. I use in this order for dns servers.
1 - my own hosted on a dedicated server. 2 - google dns 3 - router, which has VM's dns assigned via dhcp. 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms home.gateway2 [192.168.1.1] 2 8 ms 8 ms 11 ms cpc14-leic14-2-0-gw.8-1.cable.virginmedia.com [8 2.30.112.1] 3 6 ms 7 ms 6 ms leic-core-1a-ae3-2232.network.virginmedia.net [8 2.3.33.49] 4 37 ms 10 ms 11 ms leed-bb-1a-as8-0.network.virginmedia.net [213.10 5.172.17] 5 17 ms 14 ms 17 ms tcl3-ic-1-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net [212.43. 163.198] 6 15 ms 14 ms 13 ms ldn-b2-link.telia.net [213.248.93.69] 7 12 ms 11 ms 17 ms ldn-bb1-link.telia.net [80.91.250.225] 8 27 ms 26 ms 25 ms hbg-bb1-link.telia.net [80.91.250.220] 9 35 ms 33 ms 35 ms bei-b2-link.telia.net [80.91.254.207] 10 38 ms 38 ms 40 ms dnsnet-ic-134271-bei-b2.c.telia.net [213.248.69. 26] 11 37 ms 34 ms 37 ms 217.70.136.60 12 38 ms 34 ms 45 ms www.rarlab.com [217.70.129.242] |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
So I just got off with virgin who tell me that the reason I cannot get to these sites is probably because my IP address is Blacklisted - but they refuse to change my IP address. They require me to contact all websites that do not load up to enquire why they do this. I also need to contact blizzard to see why they are blocking my IP - this comes from second line support!
I referred them to the posts on wow europe with people having lots of problems but to no avail. They basically said that the onus is on myself to contact the providers to see why this is the case and even though about 25% of sites are not working they are not going forward until I have had proof of response from these providers. Does that sound right? The amount of people on WOW that are having virgin issues: See: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2123515896 http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2123452594 What I find strange is that despite using FOUR machines and 2 iphones that certain webpages will not load - yet will ping and virgin are saying it's up to me to get my IP address unbarred? Any help? |

Hi Masque
Thanks for your reply. Could you have a look at the link I posted on youtube and tell me what you think in regards to this issue I have done a video of it to show what is happening. Thanks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ima7wH1DgE I think my next step might have to be ofcom! |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Try Changing your PC/Router's mac address that should assign you a new ip.

Do you have a standalone modem and router if so have you tried changing the MAC address of either your computer if no router is involved or the router itself. The are many sites that can help with doing the above. Here is a link to the OFCOM website http://www.ofcom.org.uk/ |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hi Masque
Thanks for your reply's I get more sense from this site than the horrible 2nd line support. This is what I have done: Swapped the Superhub for the old Modem/Dlink 615 (Which should have changed the IP as I had to ring up virgin to swap it over) with still the same issue i.e. sites not showing content and wow getting to 90% before disconncting. Changed DNS providers (Virgin, OpenDNS, Google) Tried on over 4 machines (Running Different OS) and 2 Iphones Other people on this site can get to these sites. 75% of sites do work, 25% do not. Sites work OK if I connect via VPN or Mobile broadband. Virgin claim that the onus is on me to sort out and contact the webpages directly and I should be the one contacting all parties - My VPN subscription (which is £15 a month) has now run out so the only way I can contact the sites is to pay on top of my internet connection just so I can fix this issue. Both threads I linked earlier on the post to wow-europe.com have had a blue post saying their techs have looked into the issue and it's not their side. I think I can raise my claim with Ofcom as I am paying for a service I cannot use. As you prob can tell in my post I'm not clueless when it comes to IT but expecting someone to contact sites individually to get them to 'fix' the problem is very lengthy process. Thanks |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
I am surprised that you still have issues with your standalone kit, have you tried changing the MAC address to see if you get a connection or even OpenDNS or Googles DNS servers.

Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hi Masque
Again thanks for your help - I know you don't have to and It really is appreciated. Last night I plugged in the VMNG300v2 Modem and the old DLINK 615 and registered it with virgin - Should this change the IP address? If not, I don't beleive you can change the IP from the DLINK or the Modem? |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Quote:
In fact have you tried a direct connection to the modem to what happens when you get a new ip address, remember to reboot the modem. |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hi
I have swapped the superhub for the VMNG300v2 + Dlink Router DIR-615 combo and got virgin to swap over the connection to it. Would swapping the router - which has a different mac address change the IP? If not is there anywhere in the Virgin Modem/Dlink router that allows you to change the mac address as I was sure the DLINK is customer firmware that doesnt have this option? |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Swapping the superhub for the VMNG300 should have given you a new ip address. Strange that it didnt.
|
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
sounds like an issue with telia to me. do a tracert to some sites that you can access, then some to those you cant
|
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
His tracerts were using an identical route to mine though, but just with Manchester early on. The off VM network stuff was identical.

Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
I know you've tried with two routers, so this is unlikely to be the problem, but can you make sure that no ICMP is being blocked on them? This looks a lot like a PMTU discovery problem.

Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hi All
I cannot access RARLAB.COM TUMBLR.COM (Both sites just sit there in a white screen in the browser - in chrome, firefox, ie) and never time out just sit there connecting.. The only items I have ticked in my settings are: Ipsec PassThrough PPTP PassThrough Multicast I have tried the sites with them all ticked, them all unticked and every combo basically :D |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
for what its worth I have issues now but not on same sites.
nvidia.com and speedtest.net are both currently giving me issues as well as some random sites I come across. all works via a proxy. |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
The is an issue with the World of Warcraft servers due to be resolved tomorrow and it is a third party issue.

Hi chrysalis
Speediest. Doesn't work for me either it partially loads and then says I don't have flash installed... On all 5 of my machines. Pretty sure I been watching YouTube today. I must admit I really regret going with virgin not because of routing issues but the onus was put on me to contact all sites involved to ask why! |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Anyone else still having issues with sites?
|
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
For me www.time.com did not work but just time.com did. This resolved to www.time.com/time/ and the page loaded.

Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
It's a shame that virgin will not take control of this - they first told me I had a Bad IP address - and I have had 3 IP addresses recently as I have swapped modems around. They then told me I should contact all sites responsible to enquire why (even though I cannot get to them) and 2nd line support are saying it's not their issue
|
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
nothing consistent on traceroutes.
Is this a fault with either traffic shaping or some kind of inspection equipment because the fact all affected sites work fine with icmp and udp shows only tcp is affected. Also sometimes on namesco it starts an upload and then gets cut off which also suggests some kind of intermediate processing device causing issues. |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
speedtest.net is working for me but nvidia.com isn't.
I'm also having issues with bbc.co.uk in that the main page is loading but any page off of that is taking ages. |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
To the virgin Mods
Can we please have a ticket or something to raise this as everytime I call tech support they fob me off - even the 50mb team have just told me to contact all sites involved - this is not good enough. |
