End of the world, Saturday, 21st May

I had a quick mooch and couldn't see any other threads on this, anyway, that reknowned nutcase Harold Camping believes the end of the world begins this Saturday with 200 million Christians being raptured.

http://www.familyradio.com/

Fortunately most Christian leaders are rubbishing it rather than whipping everyone up into a pointless frenzy.

Anybody want to have a sweepstake on what excuse he'll use when he wakes up on Sunday morning and nothing's changed?

Best bumper sticker I ever saw was in Atlanta, which said -

"If the Rapture comes, grab the steering wheel!"....:D

I wonder if we could delay it 'till the end of the upcoming two parter of Doctor Who. I'd hate to die not knowing what happened.

I love these doomsday predictions from loonies. There was one not so long ago that said the same thing and nothing happened, then there was Y2K, they really looked like fools with that one.

I do think something is going to happen in 2012 though, but I dont think it's going to end the world. I think theres a slight possibility of solar activity causing major disruption to power grids and sattelites which worse case would see us all with no power or technology for a few weeks or months, but it's hardly the end of the world.

I'll probably be drunk this saturday so if anything happens i wont know about it anyway, just dont end the world before britains got talent.

As already mentioned and just to bring some facts in to this thread, nobody is saying the world will end tomorrow. The Rapture is believed by some to be the starting point of the end of the world which actually takes 7 years so it would still be some time away. What is believed will happen is all the Christians in the world will disapear at once and the rest of you are left to fend for yourself as the anti-Christ rises to power. He will be very charismatic and seen as being almost saint-like (think Tony Blair in 1997) and certainly no-one will guess who he is.

Cue loads of natural disasters, wars etc.

Then the battle to end all battles, but you can find out more about that yourself :)

I believe the Rapture and End of the World will occur if that's any help?

Only I have no reason to expect it to happen tomorrow or in 10, 20 or even 100 years' time. If they're going to read the bible word for word then they'd know that not even Big J knows when it'll happen so I'd have to doubt the predictive abilities of the guy in the OP.

Is it just me or has this nutjob sort of buggered himself by announcing this to his follwers i mean what happens when they wake up sunday it's going to be a bit hard to keep the faith going isn't it. Even taking what Russ says if any of them are still here in eight years they are going to be thinking something is a little wrong.

Now i know i have given a little serious thought to something totally stupid but you do have to wonder how much of a nutter you have to be to buy into this rubbish. Out of curiosity how does all this happen anyway spaceships come down take them to another world or the clouds come down swallow them all up and they go off for tea and sarnies with god ?.

Apparently, that doesn't bother him, seeing he's previously predicted that the Rapture would occur in September 1994.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Camping

Quote:

Harold Egbert Camping (born July 19, 1921) is a Christian radio broadcaster[1] and president of Family Radio, a California-based religious broadcasting network that spans more than 150 outlets in the United States as well as a website.

Camping's trademarks include his deep, sonorous voice coupled with a slow cadence. He has also used Bible-based numerology to predict dates for the end of the world.[2] His current end times prediction is that the Rapture will be on May 21, 2011 and that God will completely destroy the Earth and the universe five months later on October 21.[3][4] He had previously predicted that the Rapture would occur in September 1994

From what I can gather, you still have time to save yourself. you just need to let God know that you believe in him and you will be saved.

a bit like a once in a lifetime limited offer. you only have a few hours left. so get to it people.

Some good videos here. music is really good too.

The Rapture After Party in Fayetteville, North Carolina, is a two-day event organised by the Central North Carolina Atheists and Humanists.
Promoters of Harold Camping's prediction in New York, 13 May 2011 This prediction has been given an unusually high level of publicity

"Though the absurdity of this claim is obvious to the majority of the world, it's a great opportunity to highlight some of the most bizarre beliefs often put forth by religious fundamentalists and raise awareness of the need for reason," said a posting about the party on the group's website.

Atheists in Tacoma, Washington, have headed their celebration "countdown to back-pedalling".

Events are also planned in Houston, Florida and California.

An atheist and entrepreneur from North Hampshire, Bart Centre, is enjoying a boost in business for Eternal Earth-bound Pets, which he set up to look after the pets of those who believe they will be raptured.

He has more than 250 clients who are paying up to $135 (£83) to have their pets picked up and cared for after the rapture.

They would be disappointed twice, he told the Wall Street Journal. "Once because they weren't raptured and again because I don't do refunds."

Bill Tinker has decided that since his pets can't go where he's going, he intends to have them put to sleep.
"I don't want them to be suffering if the earthquake doesn't kill them," he said Thursday, outside his chaotically cluttered home on 1st Avenue.

The Bible-quoting proselytizer owns two parrots, three cats and a small dog.

If he believes what he believes is true then he's only looking after the animals interests.

I read somewhere the 'time' is 18:00 in the US so that's 23:00 here.

And that's assuming it's on the east coast time zone...

Still holding breath - lol.

The conviction that the world will end at 6pm today comes from a mathematical system he claims to have devised for unearthing prophesies hidden in the Bible. By his logic, 21 May 2011 is exactly 722,500 days from 1 April AD33, which he believes was the day of Christ's Crucifixion. The figure of 722,500 is important because you get it by multiplying three holy numbers (five, 10 and 17) together twice.
I'm disappointed because it's looking like it's all based on guess work. I thought it was more than that. :(

Re: End of the world, Saturday, 21st May

His argument is not ridiculous, unless you want to now retract every statement dealing with freedom of religion. If this man is not able to humanely put down his animals because he loves them and is worried about the, than the wall of separation of church and state is now moot.

I didn't realise freedom of religion included destroying healthy, adoptable animals due to one's superstitious beliefs. Silly me.

More so that I'm not going to see Jesus.

I wanted to know whether he's still wearing old fashioned clothes or whether he's moved with the times.
