Modem only or Modem/Router
Should virgin issue a standalone modem, which can be used with any router the user so chooses, or a combined modem/router, such as the superhub?
vote and discuss this isnt a superhub hate thread btw I hope mods will enforce this, and at the same time it isnt a VMNG300 lover thread |
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
So if it's neither a modem or superhub thread. What's the point as your question will involve a response featuring one or the other?
|
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
Iv chosen standalone modem for the simple reason that people want their own routing to be done professionally, they want a router that can run custom firmware, some also want to run directly into the modem, with no router in between

I didnt want another argument about the number of people having problems with the superhub, or peoples love of the modem. lets pretend that virgin media have sent out a customer response questionniare asking whether users want virgin to offer a standalone modem, or a combined router/modem for their new packages |
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
If I were VM, I would have both, with an option for the customer - modem/router for those with "simpler" needs (on the whole), and a stand-alone router for those who wanted one.
I voted for modem/router, because it works for me (even though I have another modem/router upstairs plugged into the hub supplied). |

the thread also implies that either device would be fully functioning
|
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
you missed the option for both craig, I voted but I feel its an incomplete poll.

Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
Craig, would you like me to add a third option?

Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
I voted standalone modem because VM keep messing up their combi CPEs, which is a shame because I like the idea of both in one unit especially if it has a working bridge mode so the end user might have a choice.
Third time lucky perhaps? |

I voted for modem as it preserves customer choice and needs. As far as I'm concerned all any ISP has to do is supply the connection to one PC via a modem. What's the point of supplying wireless routers/hubs if they won't (or rather can't) give wireless support. I don't know of any ISP that does or will and rightly so due to the huge inconsitancies in a given premesis. |
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
ok then for my recast take one of the standalone and add to both result. :)
The idea is a good one for a combi unit but they should never have rolled it out so forcefully as the only option, that was the big mistake. |

And for me

supplying security software, custom routers etc. Ultimately all they should do is supply a connection to a single modem and thats it. |

Want to recast your vote again Chrys?

Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
nah I will stick to both. I think there is little harm if the end user can at least choose the modem.
The ideal situation would probably be modem supplied as part of service or for extra optional small fee to all in one device sold under the guise its cheaper for the user than to go out and buy one and its a device that VM will support. Common sense, everyone is happy and more cost effective. |
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
That would seem reasonable IMHO

Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
I'd say they should have a modem router combo with bridge mode, I'd say 90% of customers would be happy with that and the others can use bridge mode. I suppose that way they can MAss produce them. Hopefully they bring out a v2

Pity they didn't think of that in the beginnig JB, there would be no calling it derogatory juvinile names then would there.

there is a new superhub coming along, but its identical, the only difference being that its from another vendor |
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
Well you will be able to use the Superhub as a standalone modem once the firmware is on offer apart from that the will not be an option for a another modem to be supplied as the is already a lot of money invested in the hubs.
|
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
Right got it now , still would like modem/router combined.

and id rather have a smaller device, like the VMNG than the superhub if it is acting as a standalone modem, as it defeats the object if you have two bigger sized routers sat next to eachother |

I imagine it would be cisco, seem to have a good relationship with vm and the TiVo isn't bad for 1st attempt.

I like to have a choice, so went for.. "The option of either standalone modem or combined modem/router"
Any choice is better than Hobson's choice. BTW, it won't be Cisco. ;) |
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
I think there should def be the option for both of them, I personally havnt had an expierence with the Superhub yet, but I think when I upgrade to the 100MB I will. IM not too thrilled about it so going to try and keep my original modem/router I was supplied with too when I got the 50mb in.
|
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
I voted for "the option", but I'd accept having that option within a single device. No manufacturer will be able to produce a 'one size fits all' piece of kit, so no ISP (VM included) will be able to supply one. Why VM chose to force-release a device that didn't have modem-only capability from day 1, is something only they can answer.
|
Re: Modem only or Modem/Router
also gone for the option as I personally would like to be able to use my own router but realise that most folks (who wouldn't have a clue forums like this exist) would be happy with one box!!
