When did they announce the third variant of TiVo with the VERY SMALL disk?

A 1GB disk would only allow you to record about 7 minutes of HD programming.

Just rang to order the 500gb. I really should have read the small print £49.95 + installation LMFAO, you must be joking.

My V+ does the job - upscales very well, records what I want and has BBC iplayer.

Virgin you can ram your boxes on these deals you swines, get a big warehouse. You'll need it.

Indeed it does however there are a lot of reports stating it is useless at the moment and full of bugs. apologies for the lack of clarity.

it may be unfair to slate tivo but virgin are making a hash of it. im sure it will come good but for now best off at arms lenghth.

If you do not like it or are wary of it there is one simple solution. Stay away and do not get it? I won one of the 1TB boxes and with all the faults that it has, I would not go back to the V+.

This is my choice and do not want to push my choice on anyone.

I know that VM have a hash of the initial offerings of TiVo but what have they done now to make it a Hash?

I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these. I couldn't really justify the cost of the 1Tb and don't really keep recordings that long that I'd need that space but £50 for the mini TiVo and £40 for activation is pretty tempting.... now how to persuade my other half;)

At £50 for the set thats brilliant but the £40 installation is holding me back.

That is your choice but you do get a lot extra for that money. I think lack of red button functionality might hold some back but the price for what after all is the latest tivo box is pretty good I would have thought.

The thing that interests me is that in the short term VM want to move there entire TV customer base over to TiVo. I am quite happy to stay on the V+ service for a number of years.

The only way in the future that I would end up with TiVo is a change in policy where any replacement boxes would be TiVo only!

I would love to know people's opinion's on this matter.

There's always a premium for early adopters. I think prices will go down but it could be some years before it's free. There will be a fair amount of V+ boxes in stock just now to replace any faulty existing ones.

Hi LondonRoad,

Sorry cannot find the direct quote but Cindy Rose says it the next few years they want the entire TV base to be on TiVo, this would make comerical sense on two levels

1. No support require for legacy TV software solutions
2. Probable migration from mpeg2 to mpeg4 (think of how many ours of HD recordings your could get on you PVR then;))

VM keep telling us we don't own the boxes so they can do what they like to an extent.

PS I am not angling for a free upgrade, I am just happy with the box and service that I have got and at present have no intension of paying any upgrade/installation fee!

Have you priced a FreeView HD Recorder? How much would it cost to add a lifetime warranty to that machine? Can you even get such a device with 3 tuners.

At £89.95, all inclusive of lifetime maintenance, the small TiVo is a snip.

Here it is:

Quote:

We are premium-positioning,” Rose says, whilst demoing the box for paidContent:UK at Virgin’s London HQ. “We’re initially positioning this as a high-end product as a tier on top of TV XL - £3 more expensive than the standard TV XL subscription. However, we intend to migrate our entire television customer base over to TiVo as our standard product within a matter of years, and not many years. That means, undoubtedly, we will course-correct, refine and review packaging and pricing decisions as we go to make that happen.”

So long as you are happy with what you are getting that is all that matters and ffffffffff what the other people think? Think about what you are able to afford and if you are unable then do not bother with it?

The good thing is that you can try it out and then decide whether it is worth the money to you. If you don't like it you can always go back to what you had with no charge. I'm still evaluating mine as I have had it less than a fortnight but I have had no problems and the drive is already 28% full.

I have a V+ and a Standard Box and wonder what the options are with a 500gb Tivo.

Would it replace the V+ Box or could I replace the standard box with one.

Are there extra charges with the 2nd option and would I then not have to pay the £5 Monthly charge I already pay.

BenMcr 15-05-2011 20:53

Re: 500GB tivo

You could choose to replace whichever box you wanted.

If you kept your V+ box then any appropriate fees for that box would apply along with the approrpriate TiVo fee

Yes you could also mention that when it is up and running you will be able to start to watch a recording downstairs and the be able to take it up from where you left off upstairs. Just need to wait for this to be activated:D

Won't that have to be 2 TiVo boxes though?

I like the idea of keeping one of my V+ boxes until the SS red button and music on demand issues are sorted out.

You would pay an additional box fee of £6.50 as you would three boxes and the TiVo fee. You would also need to make sure you made it clear that's what you wanted doing at order, otherwise it wouldn't happen

It's not just £89.95 though is it! It's also an additional £36pa, not including the additional yearly cost of the TV package you have.

Freeview HD recorders may initially be expensive, but they all have two tuners, with one of them (Digistream) allowing you record 2 and watch live tv at the same time.

OK - you can argue that there isn't as much choice with regards to channels, but to be honest, the amount of American TV series that get canned after only one or two seasons I'm starting to wonder whats the point with the extra channels anyway!

I'm still on the sidelines as what to do with regards to my Virgin TV.

Must say though, I'm still very happy with both the broadband and telephone service.

You make it sound like tivo in it's current state is buggy and lacking serious features?

That's not my experience. Although I would like some changes, if they changed nothing, I'd still be happy with Tivo.

I know people want the Red button, so I accept that, even though it's not an issue for me as I rarely use it and can get it from the Freeview on the TV if needed.

One of the fun things about Tivo, like the TVDrive/V+ when they first came out, is it gives us TV Gadget nerds something to chat about on the forums.
If they came out perfect, there would be nothing for us to talk about.
We would have to watch the TV.
I am very happy with my Tivo, and actually enjoy the anticipation of upgrades and fixes.

Do you have to ring the 0845 number to order as an existing customer seems a money maker if so as no alternative on saynoto0870

You have Virgin Media phone in your profile so you can phone 150 at no cost.

Surprised as given an installation date of this Thursday and expected much longer. Nice one Virgin.
