Virgins marketing department is not exactly the quickest in the world.

That is true, I wonder if it will be through email or the post? I'm just hoping for free installation.

Exactly what i am hoping for. Installation is a rip off, all they have to do is swap boxes, no extra cables. Although it does take a while to download and setup all data to box which is time consuming, but on the whole a easy job.

Yes installation is a rip off as far as l am concerned but if we have to pay then we will have to pay it.

That's the main thing i'm hoping for, although surely there isn't anything else this 'special offer' could offer us apart from the free installation?

Its the only thing they can offer, the box is Tivo's so we will have to pay for that and the £3 subscription, can't see those been given away.

Why the issue with the install? VM have to send out a tech to install the box so the charge is to cover that.

There are many customers who resent having to pay for installation as they do not even own the box as well.

chunkymonkey 12-05-2011 15:16

Re: Anyone received a offer from Virgin regarding the 500gb box

Well I was told that CS were going to start selling the box on Monday, as opposed to the TiVo Sales Line who started selling them from yesterday so maybe we will see an offer appear on Monday?

Whats the issue over owning the box got to do with the cost of getting it installed?

VM take a small charge for the box yes but that gives you a warranty essentially for the time you are with VM for free replacements and call outs for faults.

Can't see why you should have to pay install when the cable is already installed, just a case of swapping boxes. If cost covers engineers too then no engineer is on £40 per job.

Cost of the engineers wages, cost of fuel for the van etc.........

VM is a business and needs to make money/pay its staff so they have to charge for things.

I also got the above letter so I rang on 11th and was told there is no reference to any "offer" on their system,I would have to pay £49.95 and £40 for the install for the 500gb TiVo Box,I opted for the 1tb TiVo box because it is £149.95 and "free" install,I even read the Sales Rep the letter I recieved but he said there was no forth comming offers for the box so as they say "Don't hold your breath".................

I think the point is, Virginmedia don't even offer the choice of a self install for Tivo for the £20 or so it would take for delivery

TiVo is their premium product and VM want them done with a full tech visit to make sure the signal levels and everything are good. If they were done self install I think there would be lots of issues.

Maybe the special offer for the 500gig box is that as a current customer, you can have it now? New customers can't get it until later in the year.

To be fair, the majority of channels removed have been +1 channels which have been replaced with much better channels eg. Animal Planet +1 in favour of Quest and History +1 in favour of Military History. And some channels such as Men and Motors have been closed on all digital platforms.

That's not an answer to my question. The channels you mention are no longer available to ANYONE because Sky cancelled them.

If you are unhappy that your bills are increasing and you perceive that you are getting less for your money then you have an option. CANCEL. GO ELSEWHERE.

Oh dear, DF. You've let me down so badly by providing incorrect information.

The most recent tranche of increases did indeed increase the price of TV XL by £1.

If you do not like the channel line-up and are able to get SKY (As I know some are unable to), Why do you not all jump ship. I jumped ship after 13 years from SKY to VM and I for one is very happy with the channels that we get on VM?

Just my thoughts as I did not like all the Talk show, Shopping channels that SKY had.

This is all IMHO, It may be way off the mark of other people but:confused:

Them channels you listed were closed by BSKYB Den and the content was put on other channels for example Hawaii Five O was meant to be aired on Bravo and was transferred onto Sky One , Chuck was on Virgin One and was transferred to Living.

Someone has to pay though, so the only other thing is putting the monthly subs up or charging for callouts? VM is a business, not a registered charity :D

So charge for delivery ( I can get the box delivered for £6.50 by courier).Or allow customer to collect. You have shops & local depots

But I still go back to all these costs should & my guess is ,were part of the business plan.

Call outs:- The whole point of renting is that if it goes wrong its down to the supplier. So if its a fault no charge. That should be part of the business model. If not SACK the people whom worked it out, as clearly they are not up to the job .

I surpect that it is more along these lines ( Well every business will try this) . How to increase our revenue stream.

We have costed for supply & fit BUT lets see if some "silly" people will pay AGAIN for delivery & setup. OMG there are lots ( including me for V+ at the special offer rate at the time:dozey:). Ok Do it again. :erm: and look it works. Even if the product ( & I cannot judge on this) is not the next holy grail of TV viewing.

You can't self install TiVo, no way... are you going to go to the DP to adjust signal levels etc?

Have you not actually read about the TiVo installations in the very many posts talking about it, they take at least 40 minutes and during the install the technician has to get the power levels adjusted correctly and various firmware downloaded and installed, so it will always remain a manned install.

Received email on the 18th April ,but had not had the exclusive deal letter with my unique offer code yet.

Just checked VM help & support forum NickO says the letters will be sent out in next couple of weeks

Re: Anyone received a offer from Virgin regarding the 500gb box

Just checked this blog : http://vmhd.blogspot.com/2011/05/virgin-media-launches-500gb-box.html?showComment=1305211768867#c72832923810492 17479

which states : " Just got this from Virgin Media:

Great news, we've launched our new Virgin Media TV powered by TiVo 500GB box early for existing customers. From today M+, L and XL TV customers will be able to get their hands on Virgin Media's next-generation entertainment service, packing all of the same power and great functionality of its bigger brother but for just £49.95 plus standard installation charges.

Existing XL TV customers can enjoy the TiVo service for an additional £3 per month and now M+ and L TV customers will be able to experience the power of TiVo for an additional £8 per month, all they need to do is call to upgrade on 0845 650 7777.

We'll be making our TiVo 500GB box available for new customers this summer, watch out for more news!
"

So it looks like the special offer for VIP50 XL customers is simply to be allowed to pay £3 per month rather than the £8 for L & M customers . Totally underwhelming if that is the case & another in a growing list of overhyped announcements with underwhelming outcomes from VM. Contract up for renewal soon & seriously considering my options now.:td:

Presumably, the £8 p/m for M+ and L customers is made up of the £5 you would pay for PVR functionality on a V+, plus the £3 tivo charge?

I think the special offer is that you can get it now, wheras new customers have to wait.

Presumably on VIP50, the £3 charge is dropped?

AFK Sorry Masque, but I still say that as customers "rent" virgins TV services. The cost should be part of the rent stream. The use of up front extra charges, only serves to upset a lot of people. It would have been far simplier to say that The Tivo is an extra £5 per month ( or what ever figure you care to work it out too). I guess Virgin are too short of cash to go down that route.
Anyway should it all fail within say eleven months( given thats its a twelve month contract) of a customer signing up. Would the get the fees back? I think not. & again as its a rental a refund on returned boxes- of cause not.

I am old enough to remember when Radio Rentals did just that. They didn`t charge to set what ever you rented up . It was part of the cost.

I am not saying dont charge just build it in.

Totally off subject- adding p&p to an items cost (with no option but to pay it ) is another bug of mine. Thinking of QVC - as in -the new multi plug hole cleaner is only 15p + £25 p&p !! so the price £25.15p way not just say so!!:D

!

It is quite simple if you want the service you pay the charge as otherwise you do not get the service, it is nothing new and has been a part of what Virginmedia have done for years with many happy customers.

Also try reading this and maybe you will understand why it is a technician install only.

I have never, ever paid for installation, right back to the days when i first joined Cable North West, through to moving, upgrading of services, 50 MB broadband, never paid for V+ boxes , never ever paid install fee that i can remember, i've always been able to get them free eventually, and i bet if i wait long enough for TiVO then threaten to leave i will get that for free too.

I imagine it will be free eventually. I also imagine there will be self installs soon after this point where VM will accept some call outs but I imagine a lot will just work. I am sure with a nice instruction sheet Joe pulic can make sure the box updates its firmwares

They should just call peoples bluff and let them leave.

Regardless of cost TiVo will still require a manned install as the is no way around it.

I agree with Masque on this one; if people use threats to try to get something, VM should let them leave.

People who pay full price are subsidising prople who obtain discounts by threats. Something very wrong with that IMHO.

Very true if you want to leave then leave. I think that they should do the same as Orange and offer customers 10% If they decided to stay with them and then everybody would know what to expect. IMHO

everthing is Tivo or 3d, its just that a lot of people cant afford this due to current climate, so think it would be nice if VM just pushed something towards other VM customers ( dont know what tho lol )

I believe that if you threaten to leave then they should let you as the subscribers should not have to pay for your greed, if you want the same services as another customer then you should pay to receive them, no Ifs and no Buts.

What else have they got at their disposal, in order to get a better deal whether it be Gas , Electricity, or Tv you have got to tell the company some hard facts about pricing and if they are not prepared to budge then you leave but on a personal level l will not be leaving Virgin in which l have been with for 12 years even though l am a bit unhappy with certain things.:(:(

That's a rather simplistic viewpoint & I think it is rather insulting to accuse anyone of being greedy if they decide to attempt to negotiate a better deal especially as the Virgin Media web site actually encourages existing customers to do so ! I can't understand why anyone would not look to drive down costs in the current financial climate.
