Tivo has just had a update but what update is it?

About 10 mins ago my Tivo box just turned itself off and is doing a update but does anyone know what the update is?

its taking a while to do.

The update is done now and i can see a new thing

on the Channel strap at bottom of screen that tells you what you are watching and what channel you are watching well now the channel logo is on the left hand side.

Mine are both showing that version now too. Will be interesting to see what the official changelog is. They usually post something on the Virgin Media Community forum so I shall be keeping my eye on that forum.

Re: Tivo has just had a update but what update is it?

Does it have anything to do with being able to scroll up and down by a whole page at a time? I was moaning yesterday that I couldn't do it on Tivo but this morning I'm getting a Tivo tip along the top of the screen telling me to use the Channel up and down buttons, which sure enough works. I don't know why they haven't added these icons to the bottom of the TV Guide to tell people though.

My TiVo's always had that - channel up/down for page up/down.

That feature has been there from the start. It is only referenced in the instruction pdf online but I do agree that it would be handy to have it on screen like the V+ does

Re: Tivo has just had a update but what update is it?

Mine randomly did this on Satuday evening. In the middle of watching TV, suddenly came up "there is a problem with this channel" (BBC1 HD) - I switched to BBC1 SD which briefly appeared, followed by the same message. Other channels were OK but the box rebooted itself. When it came back on I noticed the channel logo's appeared in the now and next bar so guessed there had been some kind of update. Not at home so I can't post any version numbers.

Yes major problems see here :(

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/11...with-tivo.html

I came within 1 hr of asking for it to be taken back and my V+ installed again

The help I got from the forum was first class, helped me tweak my PQ,

This update seems to have helped PQ, and trust me I would now that after the past few days

Perfect Choice 10-05-2011 09:47

Re: Tivo has just had a update but what update is it?

Interesting to see what the update release note says then when issued, good to hear those who have had PQ issues seeing an improvement. I'll check mine when I get home tonight.

I've seen a post elsewhere that somebody with a Pace box said they had a PQ issue in its early days but an update improved that. Fingers crossed then that the same has happened here.

It's bug fixes. The most important ones are to fix some random reboots, picture freezes, and loss of the PIN. I'll let you find the UI changes.

I thought the red ring of death was exclusive to xbox but after watching a recorded programme this monring going back to the menu my Tivo locked up and wouldn't play. Had to switch off. Maybe the update caused it.

When exiting a recording on the odd occasion all audio (about once every 2-3 days) will drop out. No audio on live TV/Recordings, if something is recording at the time the audio DOES NOT drop out of the recording. The only ways to get the audio back is to 1) Reboot the box. 2) Play a youtube video. My audio is hooked up via TOSLINK to a AV receiver.

The logos do not appear until you decide to reboot your Tivo, so the update must have done that.

I didn't have the logos for weeks until I got around to invoking a reboot myself.

I've not heard of that one before. Next time it happens, please can you try the following:
1) If possible, check whether audio is still present on the HDMI.
2) If possible, check whether audio is still present on the SCART.
3) Try changing Settings->Audio->Dolby
4) Try unplugging and reconnecting the TOSLINK.

Has anyone else had this problem?

The audio issue, is a known issue, and is hoped to be fixed in the next update, or so I have been told by the Tivo team, as I have the issue also. I am having my boxed repalced today due to the random reboots, maybe now I dont need to. Would love to see if they have addressed them officially in this update.

I have the audio problem. I presume people are talking about when navigating through different menus and the mini window is playing back live TV and the sound stops when moving from say, Home, to My Shows. Very irritating!

There's a known issue when changing from SD to HD channels which is fixed in this build. Thinking about it, this might be clinteastman's problem, if stopping a SD recording and returning to HD live TV. Though it has been previously reported as a video freeze rather than loss of audio. Anyway, as I said it's fixed now so see how it goes.

Re: Tivo has just had a update but what update is it?

Performance and reliability issues I suspect.

They are about to launch the 500GB Tivo box which will accelerate volumes so suspect they wanted to improve stability as much as possible before volume supply really takes off?

The next release needs to focus on feature chnages then and the user issues reported back.

Those will be changed and improved over time when there is a big update. This one was just to improve stability and sort a few small bugs.

I don't know if or when TiVo will update the remaining SD screens. Customers in the USA have been asking for it for over a year now.

The Music on Demand search isn't broken as such. It was added to TiVo which never had On Demand before so its still a work in progress and will be improved over time. I have reported the need to add a search and a better A-Z listing.

Some causes of rebooting are fixed, but others remain. If your box reboots frequently you should report it to VM.

Today, my TiVo is slower than it was before the update. I'm not saying the update has caused this, before certain people shoot me down in flames. But when I first pressed the home button I had a completely black screen for about 5 or 6 seconds. All the menus are really slow in loading up since then.

Could the update/reboot mean that everything will take 24 hours or so to fully load up again, like after the first install?

Correct, and I can't. Just hooked up my Tivo box to my LAN via the ethernet socket in the back and rebooted. Trying to see if it gets an IP address.

Tink it's something to do with TiVo accounts in the US. If you create a TiVo account in US, you link you box to it, and I think that key is ... the key.

Also, some Apple iOS apps that support TiVo suggest they need this key to work, but not for UK customers :-(

What's the UI trick, first I've heard of that one? Sounds useful as I had to reboot for this very issue earlier.

Well, all this explains why I experienced some bizarre behaviour earlier on today. At least they are working on improvements.:)

It's supposed to be "Press 0 while on the HOME screen" but I can't get it to work anymore  The theoiy is that it resets the UI.

It allows another box to access the programmes recorded on that particular box. I suspect for VM it will allow other boxes on your local network to access recordings on other boxes on your local network, that you feed in the media access key for.

In the states it allows pcs as well as set top boxes to access and play those recordings. It looks like VM havnt got permission for the PC access part, as yet.

John.

I have found the Tivo far slower to change channel than the V+ ever was.

Have you got multiple output resolution settings for your TV? I had my TiVo set for 720p for SD and 1080i for HD, which made switching between the two painfully slow as the TV would "ping" and adjust each time. I've now switched back to 720p for both and it's as quick as the Samsung V+ ever was.

Just read your blog about this to Nialli. I leave mine on 1080i only. To my eyes I find the HD picture is sharper on that than at 720p although SD is slightly more blurry. But to be honest, since having Tivo, recording something is SD is a rarity.

Perhaps one other thing about the SD PQ from my point of view is that because pretty much all my viewing is in HD, when I do watch an SD programme I think the difference is exaggerated.

For me PQ isn't an issue and I love my Tivo!

Is this for pictures that would normally be stretched to wide? There is a setting in picture settings called 'panel' which means that 4:3 photos show in 4:3 with sidebars rather than being stretched and looking like something out of a funhouse (sorry I can't bear watching wrongly formatted picture).

According to one of the Forum Team on the VM Tivo help forum, yesterday's update included a fix for direct access to VOD material form the EPG history.

Since the update I've noticed that access to You Tube appears in the Search & Browse menu and in My Shows. Was this part of the update, or have I just never noticed it before?

Perhaps my box needed a reboot to show it, like the channel logos. Until the update, my TiVo had never been rebooted.

Probably yes. Should we be rebooting our boxes manually every now and again just to keep it running smoothly. I know it isn't running a Microsoft OS so shouldn't need it, but is it still worthwhile to do?!

Just remember to do it via "Home->Help & Settings->Clear or Reset Set Top Box" so that it shuts down cleanly. :tu:

Not if you select the first option "Restart the TiVo box".

BenJSmyth 11-05-2011 15:43

Re: Tivo has just had a update but what update is it?

Yes, don't touch the other options of you're knackered!

You have to do three thumbs down and then press last channel to confirm you want to do anything anyway, so you are pretty safe.
