Dilemma

Well, what do I do now?

I’ve been waiting patiently for the Red button for so long, and now it seems to be finally getting near, and I was feeling positive, guess what happened?

I came home yesterday to find my wife signing up for Sky. I asked all the questions, most notably Broadband Speed, and was told I can receive “up to 20Mb” I didn’t feel too confident questioning him, but my wife was really keen on moving from VM, as she really feels we pay far too much for our services (we get the lot)

Anyway, what it has come down to, is that we are getting the full Sky hit, TV, phone & Broadband, for a lot less than we are paying VM.

It seems we get a lot more channels, cheaper calls, sky player & more HD channels.

Now I’m sure there must be a catch, anyone care to educate me (and my wife) while we have a chance to reconsider?

Thanks

Re: Dilemma

I think the clue is in the up to 20Mb. Sky use copper cable so you may get a lot less than 20Mb. It depends how close you are to the exchange. Virgin has Tivo while the Sky box is nowhere near as good. Sky has more channels but Virgin are promising more in the future. Also if the Sky box fails outside the warranty period you have to pay for an engineer. While with Virgin although you do not own the box engineer visits are free.

Sky has no Catch Up TV for BBC/ITV/channel4 / channel 5

Vm have free repairs for faulty equipment where as you have to pay Sky for repairs/replacements after the 1st year.

Yes, this is an area that bothers me, I have considered this.

What's "a lot less"?

Re: Dilemma

That's a great saving - well done (depending on the BB speed).

Re: Dilemma

Distance from the exchange is key, I've just moved from Vm (30 Meg) to Sky and my broadband speed is just 4 Meg down and 0.5 up as I live quite a way from the exchange, compared to Vm's much higher speed service.

However it's not always about speed and I find the quality (jitter) is a lot better with Sky (for gaming) so I would say it depends also on what you do with your broadband, or more importantly how much bandwidth you consume.

If you are perfectly happy with the services Vm supply (apart from the price), you could have rang Vm retentions to see what they were willing to offer you to keep you with them, or trimmed down your package to suit your budget.

Either way you will probably get a call from Vm sales to temp you to stay, who may be able to match the price Sky have offered.

Just food for thought

Re: Dilemma

Make sure the sky deal is including the higher broadband, not the free one, as the quota on that is small AND the anytime plus comes out of it as well.

And anytime plus has a selection of things, but not the main channels catchup, so to get that back, you'll need a PC to access BBC Iplayer, ITV Player, 4OD etc. - or an Internet TV.

I phoned virgin to cancel and they offerd me nothing so i signed up to sky. a week later Virgin called offering me the same as i would have got on sky but at a cheaper price! phoned sky to cancel the install and they made me a better offer...

But ended up staying with virgin as they where cheaper overall than Sky (after i tried to leave) and i know you will always get better broadband from Virgin than Sky, because of how it works... :p:

The only reason (and I mean the only reason) I am still with VM is the broadband,IMO Sky HD is far superior than VM in the television department and Customer Service,as for the landline phone service they are both on a par with each other.........before I get hounded this is MY OPINION ONLY!!

It is all personal choice as many people have Virginmedia broadband and SKY for the television and nothing to be hounded about.:)

It is unlimited, and fee calls after 7pm and all weekend.

Seems quite good

it is actually £35pm cheaper than I am currently paying to VM, i'd be daft not to give it a go!

Mate, i'm with you.

I hate that dish, and much prefer VM and my cable.

I have many personal reasons to hate some certain people associated with SKy

Clue.. JFT96, I was there, lost family, So the thought of moving back to Sky is not good in my book.

But being in Local Gov't, wages cut, I really have to look beyhond my personal predjudices and look to what deal is best for me.

On a personal note, our Peter who died at Hillsborough, would have been 37 today, but he will be forever 15

God Bless you Pee~Wac :)

I feel the same way about anything to do with News International and would never even use one of their rags for toilet paper as I would feel even more soiled.:mad:

Sorry for your loss as the pain will never go away.

On a separate note have you called Virginmedia and asked them to match the price at all it could be worth your while.

I thought I had good reasons to boycott Murdoch (which I do as much as I can, if it wasn't for Sky basics on VM I'd be 100% ******* free) but not a patch on you two, not after that 'The Truth' article that horrible papper published.

You really have to decide what's best for you , I have both and here's my thoughts

VM wins on Broadband speeds , Catchup Service , Free service calls ( replacement box ) , Free ESPN included with XL and free HD channels included in XL.

Sky Wins on better channel range , more HD content available and cheaper phone service.

Rubbish is a bit harsh , however it is dependant on the length of your line the same as all ADSL providers.

I agree mate ADSL is outdated technology , however it depends what the OP does with his BB and how close he lives to the Exchange , a short line could see speeds of 14mb - 20mb however some people with long lines only see speeds of less than 1mb , simply not good enough in 2011.

I believe the average on Sky BB is between 6mb -8MB.

Yes I can believe that , its a case of what you use the internet for , if its mainly web browsing and email with occasional video , them speeds are more than enough if your a big downloader , movie streamer etc your probably going to want more.

It also depends how many people are using the same internet connection at the same time. Children etc.:D

Well friends, i have had Sky now for 4 days and I really have to say i'm impressed.

The picture quality seems so much better, which I found surprising. The number of channels is fantastic, and the red button works, but funnily now I have it, I'm not really bothered about it.

The Skyplayer is really good, just the Broadband to go, which is getting installed next Tuesday. I guess it is hen, that the honeymooon ends!!

No but your TV sub increases if you don't take a VM landline , however still probably cheaper if you don't need a phone line , I have one so its not a big issue for me.

All I would say if you ever think of changing is look into what you want , remember ESPN is free with XL on VM and you have catchup , Sky has more channels and better HD range but they charge you 10.25 a month for it.

VM also have TiVo. Even with the little bugs and problems that are discussed on here, it is the best set top box I have ever used. I had Sky+HD until December and I preferred that box over the V+, but TiVo blows it away. Will be incredible as it improves and new apps get added etc.
