Why has my service gone poop since monday?
Right, you might have seen my thread from monday, the broadband went mad, the speed went down from 50meg to between 10 and 20, and pings were erratic. I think my upstream modulation changed on monday, but hasnt changed back, or is it just a network problem?
http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/8650/usstats.png http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/4346/downstream.png http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/3507/upstream.png ---------- Post added at 20:28 ---------- Previous post was at 20:26 ---------- ...meant to add this as well, please observe the spikes at peak times, as well as the packet loss nearly 100% without a re-start of either the modem or the router, and nothing in the log to suggest why https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...011/06/120.png |
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
Seriously couldn't you have posted this in the existing thread you created earlier in the week ?

For years where i live i've always has a solid connection but browsing is very slow tonight so i did a speed check and i'm not surprised browsing was slow just look at that it's not even 1Mb. It's either VM doing something or everyone being online over the holiday period. |

It's the same issue, you need to speak to VM.

But there's nothing wrong with the modulation you've posted, power levels are pretty much spot on etc. |
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
The is no real issue there and the upstream is still within spec at 4Mb, it could be anything and it may just resolve itself.
|
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
It *does* seem as though VM are heading towards another rocky time for me too. I haven't seen >60meg on downstream and >6meg on upstream for a few weeks (100meg service).
When I called them yesterday they said there some utilisation issues that 'hadn't been reported' yet. No link monitoring systems then, yet? |

What if they take you up on your offer to leave?
|
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
From experience, it's best just to put up with it and hope they fix it soon. From day one on 100meg I was only getting ~8.8meg upload but I remember the 768k days and feel humbly grateful :-)

Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
Anyone that expects their internet performance to be absolutely perfect all the time needs to take a good look at themselves, as regardless of ISP the can never be a guarantee of perfect performance.
Also all ISP's can only ever offer up to performance nothing more, maybe Korea with its Fibre to the door may offer near to that performance but here. |

The only other alternative is 3mb adsl, as thats the max speed in my area, there is no infinity, only adsl and cable, so 50mb cable it is ;) There is definitley a utilisation issue at the moment, it affecting everything from speed to ping |

off peak I am sorted, on peak is the issue. Now maybe I am overly fussy about my own situation as after all 1 or so hour each day of dodgy latency isnt too bad, the reason I am complaining now is I know soon my area is getting uplifted speeds so I really shouldnt be seeing any issue whilst my area is supposedbly over provisioned at the moment. Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
well my area will be 100meg enabled in september, and im not waiting until then for a network capacity upgrade, at the moment im not sure whether its network end, i will need someone who knows what they are talking about to let me know about this:
in the street cabinet, I think my cable is wired into the tap through a splitter, i.e. i am sharing my tap with someone else. Would this affect my connection at all? by the way, i know this becuase the cabinet was open the other week. and i presume its mine in the splitter, as i only got my cable installed a couple of months ago, and i presume they ran out of taps and put a splitter on another one to get me connected, although im a bit nooby in this area and will need someone to confirm |
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
if you look at my first post, you can see that my connection has been fine today, must have been whatever happened at 2AM that re-started my connection 3 times, maybe work on the network side, either way, the connection has been solid speed and usual ping

So how about IF you must rant everyday here about your speed issue that you post ONLY in this thread because you will find any further duplicates will be merged with this one. |

Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
could someone with technical knowledge (probably ignition (lol)) please let me know about this: when my connection was installed, it was put into the street cabinet through a splitter like this one:
http://fl1.shopmania.org/files/photo...y~11413432.jpg Could this be why my service seems like its over utilised, because I am sharing a tap with another user, directly contending the service? for example if they are downloading something, it will slow my connection? and if so, will I be able to get it fixed? i know that offshore wont have a clue what a street cabinet is, but will i be able to report this properly to a tech support agent? |
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
no that would not have any effect on your connection.
|
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
if taps have no affect then why do they have operations every so often to remove them?
|

Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
The only effect would be on power levels. It's not ideal but so long as power levels are within spec it's a non-issue.
Just remember that you are 'sharing' the signals with everyone else on the coaxial segment you are with anyway. The splitter drops the downstream power about 3.5dBmV and raises upstream transmit power about 3.5dBmV. So long as the splitter is working properly there will be no impact on SNR or anything else, as any interference from the other home on the splitter would munt you anyway. The RF network is very, very basic. It delivers radio frequency at a certain power, that's all it does. It can cause problems only through the RF power being off or the quality of the RF signal being unacceptable, that's about all. There is actually absolutely no intelligence on the network at all until you get to a hub site. |
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
fair enough, thanks for explanation.
|
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
It would be no different to having a splitter in your home.

---------- Post added at 22:08 ---------- Previous post was at 22:06 ---------- i was just interested as to whether i was effectively sharing my connection with someone by using the same tap, at least it would be a reason for the drops in speed and spikes in ping. I have been in contact with the CEO office so hopefully ill get somewhere, thanks for clearing this up ignition btw ;) |
Re: Why has my service gone poop since monday?
I've had a splitter in my home with two 50MB connections coming off it and full speeds on both. So a splitter in the cab wouldn't have any effect either.
