Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?

Phone Rings... VM: Hi, you've been selected for our new 30mb broadband panel, how has you're experience with the SuperHub been? Selected Customer: Well, I'm having some issues with mine like Youtube streaming freezes, issues with usenet, online gaming, no bridge mode, the new R25 firmware....... VM: Click, brrrrrr..... Selected Customer: Hello? Hello? Anyone there? Phone Rings... VM: Hi, you've been selected for our new 30mb broadband panel, how has you're experience with the SuperHub been? Selected Customer: Well, I hardly use mine much just thought the extra speed would make sending and receiving my emails a bit faster and general web broswing faster too. VM: Welcome to our panel! |

"Our brand new 30Mb broadband hasn’t been tested by Ofcom and SamKnows yet. That’s why they’re recruiting their latest speed testing panel and we’d love it if you’d join them."
Like they know if any of their customers are already SamKnows testers or not! |
Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
Joining will at least bare out any problems you are having.
I have been on the testers list since day one. Any complaints on your system can be reinforced by graphs which can be printed out. |

hopefully this will indirectly give ofcom a heads up on the pooperhub and maybe they'll be able to influence VM in a way we might not expect (keeping fingers crossed for pooperhub bring withdrawn and stand alone modems coming back)

Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
SamKnows are after quite a few new testers/monitors, not just for a VM connection.
Go here don't worry about having filled 2 forms in. |
Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
I've already filled that exact same form in though?
|
Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
Does anyone know what this device is they want you to use? Does it have camera/mic bulit in so they can see/hear your frustration as your SuperHub doesn't do what it's supposed to do :D
|
Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
As I understand it, it's basically just a cut-down wireless router that they have programmed to do all sorts of tests when you're not using your connection.

Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
I couldn't anyway as my monitor (modded cisco modem) is recording my BT traffic.
Our brand new 30Mb broadband hasn’t been tested by Ofcom and SamKnows yet. As usual from VM, incorrect as they "don't know!". Any SamKnows tester who was on either 20Mb or 50Mb service and upgraded/downgraded to 30Mb would still be running their equipment and SamKnows would detect the service change automatically. SamKnows can and will run specific tests for VM 30Mb service if VM care to pay for the same. Rather than making it look like a VM initiative they could've been a bit more open and truthful and perhaps sent a copy of this "SamKnows & Ofcom UK broadband performance testing Way back in 2008 SamKnows partnered with Ofcom to carry out a comprehensive study of broadband provider performance, a follow-up from our own study completed in August of that year. In both cases SamKnows defined and funded the technical solution with the objective of creating a data set which would enable consumers to have the best possible understanding of the broadband performance delivered by the UK's leading ISPs. We're quite frankly delighted to announce that we're embarking on another project for 2010 this time as part of a two-year study taking us through to April 2012 - a period during which we believe consumers can expect significant changes in broadband performance as faster next-generation services are launched. We're on the lookout for UK broadband consumers to join our community, if you're interested please click here and fill out our short registration form." http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ofcom_and_samknows |
Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
@Carl: It only does tests when your not using your connection? Seems strange, does it not still monitor your connection when you're actually using it to get 'real' usage stats and performance?
|
Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
Obviously Carl know what it does so I'm saying nothing!

Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
Use an old web page by all means.
"SamKnows has been appointed by a number of ISPs, around the world, to provide our performance measurement solutions. One of these is Virgin Media, who, following an extensive six-month competitive review where Virgin tested the SamKnows Performance Monitoring solution against other competitor products. " After which they continued with funding the SamKnows/Ofcom tests as all other ISP's did. They no longer did nor do, their own testing via SamKnows. |

This is the bit I meant to take issue with. Quote:

They, as all ISP's who support them, get the results of the testing as do Ofcom. They do not have nor pay for dedicated results for any partcular tier of service. All they get is the same report as the other ISP's. |
Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
It says not to bother if you are a "heavy downloader" which they say is "over 30Gb per month".
That's me out then.... they obviously don't want users who are being traffic shaped or whatever as it may screw their findings... and let the cat out of the bag. |

From reading the SamKnows site they use a Netgear router with custom firmware, see last paragraph:

Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
Well they used to use Linksys ;) (Or possibly both, randomly!)

Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
Maybe that page hasn't been updated in a while? It does state they are working with other manufacturers so the magic boxes might well come in various flavours!

So if you only have a VM BB connection could it ever monitor any other ISP? |

Anyway, back to the thread topic.
I have received one, rx'd the confirmation email with the speedtest, and signed up for it. |
Re: Anyone had a 'Keeping Broadband Fast and Fair' email?
Haven't had anything yet. Maybe it's because I'm a heavy downloader or my area is just over utilised...

@Carl - any credibility you think you may have as a network/ISP expert is disappearing with each post you make, you may want to reconsider your approach. Might I suggest rejoining with a new username and maybe being a little less arrogant.

Also.... that's hundreds. Where's the "thousands"? You see... the thing about forums such as these and VMs Official ones is that people will complain but they will rarely compliment. In other words, you don't see the thousands of customers who are perfectly happy with their services posting as such. Which is fair enough. But that also does not mean that problems are as widespread as they may appear. Don't get me wrong. One un-happy customer is one too many! That's not the point though. |

As stated previously, the VM trial lasted 6 mths and was extended by SamKnows as General ISP monitoting ibn conjunction with OFCOM and not solely as a VM one. The link I gave tells you that it is in conjunction with Ofcom, in case you missed it here it is again.http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ofcom_and_samknows https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/04/14.jpg Why you would want to obscure the results is a mystery as well as there is no confidentiality clause attached to it either. |

second line.... you just admitted that THERE IS a problem third....i said hundreds IF not thousands...the word IF is the point fourth.... if there was thousands of happy customers why havnt they posted in the forum???????? in the last week ive seen one....yes ONE fifth.... you are quite correct in that one unhappy customer is one too many.....so how come the THOUSANDS of posters on the forums ARE UNHAPPY???? sixth...not the point though????? im sorry but to use an case study....out of thousands of car buyers there was only ONE person happy...that car company would either go bust or FIX THE PROBLEM seventh...not the point???? that just shows how arrogant you are of other peoples woes with VM lastly...if u draw a little moustache on you pic you would look like hitler :dozey::dozey: |

Some faults, especially intermittent ones (ie that don't affect everyone) can be hard to trace. Parts may be needed that might take some time. Any number of things really. |

and where did i mention anything about the internet killing anyone?? They had to recall all the cars because a fault one could possibly be fatal. You signed up to the 6 month trial testing VM that VM advertised. I didn't. I signed up with SamKnows direct before that so I cannot contact the VM support team you speak of. My SamKnows equipment is also now monotoring my BT connection as the change in my ISP was automatically picked up by it. You obviously need to read up on how SamKnows monitoring works and what it does before stating you've proved your case and don't want to be contradicted. The link I've given you is a good start. I suggest you read fully before commenting further. |

(PS. You don't think I actually knew that? :p:) Just wanted to apologise. I didn't mean for this thread to go so OT or get out of control. I just don't see why I should put up with someone telling me I'm wrong when I'm actually not; as Pip did originally. Now it turns-out that he is actually on a different Broadband monitoring programme than I am; and therefore I was right. Anyway... we can now get back to our standard, regular flame-throwing :D |
