1TB well worth it as you never have to worry about space again even if you dont use it all and free install for april is a bonus

If you record a lot of HD or like to keep whole series' recorded for when you want them, then 1TB is for you.

The 500gb is still a good option for most though :)

Will the recording time be around 60hrs HD for the 500gb , brings the offering in line recording time wise with standard Sky HD box.

I think the 500gb will be a popular choice for people going pay TV from free view and a consideration for switchers from other platforms , will the V+ still be available to new customers ?

at the moment, yes.

I can't see it being too long before VM have a comprehensive HD channel catalogue. In the next couple of years 500GB just won't be enough. If it was me I would just get the 1tb now and avoid having to upgrade again in the near future.

Re: 500GB or 1TB option

I'd say 500Gb for the average user and 1Tb if you like me you record a lot in HD, to the point of if it is in SD then I am loath to watch it.

With Cindy rose saying that all customers will be moved over to tivo in the coming years (and I think she said something like, "not that many years", 'At the moment' seems an appropriate answer to me.

A 500 gig box, so soon was a bit of a surprise to me, especially the price and a sign of tbings to come?

Considering that the are over 1 million V+ boxes presently in circulation and they are by no means in the majority I would say replacing all Vboxes with TiVo boxes will be ongoing for many years.

Especially when you consider that the are still customers using old 3Com, Terayon and even NTL100 modems just on the NTL side plus DPX100/110, Surfboard 3100/4100 modems on the Telewest side it will be a while.

I was just quoting one of your VM bosses :D

You can see why they will stop issuing V+ as an option as soon as it's practical though.

I have seen the quote and can see where she is coming from but the cost to replace that many Vboxes would be horrendous, a nice thought but a very expensive one but I expect over a period of years they will be replaced when they develop a fault.

Re: 500GB or 1TB option

I'm sure it was also the plan to replace all the boxes with the TV Drive/V+ "in the coming years" too when that was launched.
It's just marketing spiel, and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Besides, as long as they can get away with charging a phantom 'activation fee' for a new box that for all purposes is rented, there's no way they'd swap every exisiting cutomers box for free

The difference now is that TiVo is the new platform. V-HD will be the box for people who don't want PVR and that will at some point get TiVo'd.

I can say the the 1TB box gives you 536 hours of SD and 121 hours of HD, so you will just need to divide the times.

The bit rates of channels vary widely (especially for SD), so exact time isn't predictable.

Thats correct and a switch to mpeg4 for VM down the line would bring the box to similar times as the Sky 1TB box which is 240 hrs HD.

OK, now go into My Shows, select a recording, and press Info. It'll show you how much space it occupies

First two in my list:
40 minute recording from BBC1 (SD): 1.25GB
70 minute recording from Quest : 1.13GB

Re: 500GB or 1TB option

Hi guys,

Having read these forums with interest re: TiVo, I think the 500GB version will be adequate for my needs. Although I pre-registered, I am yet to receive an email with the details but from these forums it looks like there will be the £49 activation, £3 TiVo fee plus £40 install.

Is any of the VM staffers on here able to comment on whether they will do a free installation offer on the 500GB box like they have for the 1TB box during April?

Thanks

It is priced at £49 with a £40 installation fee.

Crazy difference in price between the two boxes, if indeed the only difference is the hard drive size.

Be more than happy with the 500GB given the prices I think.

Re: 500GB or 1TB option

One thing perhaps to remember, is that TiVo isnt just recording the things you've asked it to, it will be gathering content for stuff you might like and stuff that matches your wish lists. So if you think you'll record up to 60 hours yourself, that won't be enough space for TiVo 500mb, and you'll miss out on one of the key reasons for TiVo.

Otherwise your £3 per month is kind of being wasted.

Have to admit that I will certainly be thinking about getting the 500gb Tivo. My main reason for upgrading would be the extra disc space. I realise what you are saying with regards to the wishlist function, but this is something that I don't see my self using anyway. And although the wishlist is one of the main features of the box, I'm hoping that I will be getting good value for the extra £3pm charge :erm:

It's just a shame Virgin can't waver the install fee, but I'm still OK to pay current 500gb Tivo asking price.

My question is though, will the £3 a month be dropped for VIP50/100 subs with the smaller box.

just got my email from VM re getting the TiVo before the rush

it appears to say the 1TB version has 2 tuners for recording and a 3rd one for watching

is that correct or have I miss-read that - recall seeing somewhere you could only watch on 1 and record on a second tuner ??

When it initally launched only two tuners were switched on. Now all three are

In fact you can record on all three at the same time (but you have to watch something recorded or via the BBI connection)

Re: 500GB or 1TB option

thanks -

does the TiVo have a transfer prog to DVD recorder option like the V+ box

I see you can't transfer what you have recorded on the V+ box & if you want to keep it as well you have to pay £6.50 pm but is there an option to keep the V+ box but not connected for £0 - ie just so I can view the recorded progs &/or record to DVD over time

I have gone with the bigger version as it sounds suitable for films arts and sport in HD which take up space. Also the installation fee being dropped made my mind up to go with it now.

RamJet 12-04-2011 12:25

Re: 500GB or 1TB option

yes the £0 installation fee makes the difference

still making my mind up - I've got the V+ box pumped to bedroom using the spare RF output on the back of V+ - does the TiVo have a RF / spare output that could be used

As I understand it, initially, the 500gig drive won't be available to new customers, so the only comparison is £149 as against £49.

500 gig will always have the install cost; iTB, if ordered in April by any current customer, will be free for installation

does this mean that if I HDMI cable into my HD-ready-TV I will be able to use the scart to connect out to my bedroom

and er if the scart is always active can I use that to connect to my ordinary DVD-Recorder if I really wanted to eg

(a) copy to DVD disk what I'm actually watching

(b) copy to DVD disk what I've recorded onto the hard-drive

You can do both, but you'll have to be playing back the recording on Tivo to record it.

I think with the current pricing for existing customers the 1TB seems better value. HD recordings are a must and I think for an extra £60 one off the 1TB is worth it.

I would say that though as we have a 1TB in the living room and are replacing our bedroom V+ with a 1TB Tivo and have a VHD box in the kids' room.
