Thanks for the new thread as planned. :)

Lets hope we get more stuff coming soon in this period of the year.

Now that Sky News has been bought (I think), Would it be likely that we would get the HD version very soon?

News Corp will continue to own the exact same percentage of NewCo (the planned new holding company of Sky News) as they do of BSkyB now so effectively Murdoch's ownership of Sky News won't change at all. It will certainly be a separate operation outside of BSkyB but I expect he will still have plenty to say about it, even if not publicly.

I personally doubt Sky News HD would be that high up on the much anticipated 'HD shopping spree' list purely on cost grounds but time will tell.

28th April seems an odd date for a launch (between the two 4 day bank holiday weekends). Would think they'd be minimising changes over this period.

Perhaps but MB can only report what he is told, there were supposedly HD and SD channels launching on 1 April but it didn't happen.

Maybe the dates are a good time to launch as more people will be at home to see it?

I was given an launch date that Virgin Media are ''working on'' weeks ago but my insider told me NOT to give out that date but they give me the go-head to say the Sky Sports Red Button will launch sometime in the 18th till 24th of April for non TiVo users.

Did everyone noted that Virgin Media added 14 channels to the ''Total Channels'' over night?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. II.

Is the wait nearly over for new channels the number of services has jumped from 342 upto 356 on my v+ box, So is a launch soon on the cards. Only time will tell

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. II.

Even though I said I would be checking for tests on my cable tuner equipped TV I thought it selfish not to given the jump in channels today.

I can confirm that 14 new encrypted streams have been added and are no doubt interactive feeds related to Sky Sports Red Button.

They are flagged as SptsETV 1 - 14

Nothing else had been added as far as I can see.

It seems strange as my V+ is now saying total services of 373 and I am sure that it was saying 357 before?

Your area is an old Telewest one and it was saying 359 last night on my box (Ex-Telewest).

Cheers!

The good news is as VM have added 14 streams then that (to me at least) would suggest customers can expect a pretty comprehensive if not full Red Button service when it fully launches.

It will only be a watered down version.

Told not to expect CL Games next season

Part of me can understand this. Investment in their product ought to count for something I guess.

I wonder if the VM team realised what we would/wouldn't get when they signed the deal.

What I also believe is that the full RB experience will come in time....just like Sky Atlantic et al....

The website says UEFA Champions League will have red button coverage, it dosen't say what it will include but it's only a general insight of what to expect.

Click 'exciting developments' and then 'there's more to come', it's on the right hand side of the page about red button.

I couldn't provide a direct link.

It does count for something, £30 worth of something they get from me every month.

Withholding features of a channel on a rival platform when customers of that platform are paying the same for it is inexcusable.

Sky sports should get it's return from investment on subs to Sky sports, not on forcing people to take it on Sky over VM.

Hidden 30 appears to be a data stream, it isn't a video stream like the 14 that popped up yesterday.

Perhaps it's the data information for SSP red button but it definitely isn't a video channel testing.

Indeed but that's the economic situation we all find oursleves in.

I read the BBC confirmed they were unable to put together a competitive bid this time around, I have not read anything about ESPN bidding, or not for that matter.

I wonder how the BBC can complain of lack of funds. They take the same amount every year off each person who has a TV. Technically their "pot" shouldn't be suffering!

And probably a further downturn in people's interest of the Carling Cup now that none of it will be live on terrestrial TV.

They would say because the licence fee has been frozen and inflation is going through the roof.

And they (actually WE) have to pay for S4C and the World Service from the Licence Fee pot soon.

But I agree they are always crying poverty, I still like the beeb though but given the financial situation there's probably better things they could spend their money on than live football in my opinion but that's for another thread.

Hopefully they will get a highlights package though.

There are a couple of things at play here, one is inflation, things cost more and the second is the BBC Trust putting pressure on the BBC about just such spending.

Personally as I'm not very interested in football I for one don't mind that money going elsewhere but I can see if you are a football fan it's not good.

I think it's a genuine worry that Sky are ending up owning so much. But in once sense they are not doing themselves any favours. The more they own, the more competition laws will come back to bight them in the ass...

IMO many more events (and i mean the semis and finals) ought to be in the "Crown Jewels" list. It's pretty criminal anyone without Sky will not be able to watch the Carling Cup finals and the ashes to name but two...

Well Media Boy, Digital Fanatic has thrown the gauntlet down. Following his great bit of news regarding the TiVo install fee waiver, we're waiting for your big announcement about more HD channels... :D :D :D

IMO many more events (and i mean the semis and finals) ought to be in the "Crown Jewels" list. It's pretty criminal anyone without Sky will not be able to watch the Carling Cup finals and the ashes to name but two...

Maybe Sky were the only company to bid on this occasion? The Guardian says they were (so it must be true!)

Who knows.

As far as I know Virgin are busy right now getting TiVo up and running for April 11th launch.

And also busy getting the Sky Sports Red Button launch starting the week of April 18th.

I think we will not see any announcement on new channels launches this month.

Really thought they would have had some new channels for tivo launch day,Really messed up there.Think thats the game changer that might have tempted peeps from sky,Dont think tivo will manage it on its own.

With the red button for SKY Sports coming are we still a million miles away from HD PPV events. I feel like a second class citizen paying £15 for SD and SKY customers get HD version for the same price!

Over the coming few years, everyone will be moved to Tivo, so all will have the new interface.

The tivo software can't run on the V+ box.

I think we are talking about a process

1. V+ will not be available to new customers, only TiVo will be with a number of different models
2. eventually all replacement standard boxes will be replace with VHD boxes, through upgrades of service or faulty box replacement
3. Same as to 2 for V+ customers

new channels would be nice ! also like the idea of everyone having tivo but i think that will be a long way off yet, i had a look at it the other day and i liked what isaw but as things the way they are money and jobs etc its the activation fee putting me off signing up for one.

This sounds viable and would be a very smart move.
Once customers are happy with content, "believe in better" will mean Virgin, rather than Sky ;)

The sooner the better, VM could then switch to using MPEG 4 for HD instead of MPEG 2, that would free up bandwidth for more channels, faster broadband etc.

Not for me either.

Having said that we went the Odeon recently and 2 tickets cost nearly £17, add onto that travel and the obligatory snacks and it must have cost almost £30 all in.

Didn't Virgin offer a service recently were you could order the movie on demand for £15.00 before the general DVD release date, and you received a copy of the movie in either DVD or Blu-Ray format through the post shortly after? I'm sure this was done with Clash Of The Titans and Alice In Wonderland.

The future for cinema isn't looking too good. I went to see Hall Pass recently on a Friday afternoon, I was genuinely the only person at the screening! There is a demand to see new movies at home quickly. Essentially I'm paying almost £30.00 per month for SKY Movies in HD. If Virgin offered a Picturebox type service for around the same figure, but showing movies shortly after their cinema release I'd well jump on it. Guess we need Ofcom to give SKY's monopoly on movies a good shake before we see this type of service.

Sorry to go off topic, but it's a service I'd like to see coming soon:)

I think there's definitely a market for it, especially for families. I just like the occasional cinema night out and that's the only reason it wouldn't be for me, i'm usually happy to wait for the DVD release otherwise.

In the heady days of the 80's BSB anticipated that with their technology they would be offering something similar within a few years of launch.

Hmmmm!

Were VM have a distinct advantage in the VOD war isn't just technology its also the fact that at the moment Anytime+ is only available to Sky BB customers.

Reading the article and the link to the article in Variety, that's how they've come to that price; £18 is almost half the price it cost you to go to the cinema. With a big screen TVs and a good home cinema sound system, watching at home has a lot going for it.

Sky's VOD rights situation just needs sorting out, and as quickly as possible.

Indeed.

Of course from most end users points of view it matters little how content is delivered.

It's what content ends up on the screen that matters.

Sorry to digress, what does that equate to storage of HD on a V+ box as mpeg2 HD is about 21+ hours record time on the 160GB hard drive?
