The Royal Wedding 2011

The big day draws closer for Will's & Kate. Have you got your royal wedding sick bag at the ready?

Neighbours are planning a street party. Knowing our neighbours, sick bags might well come in useful.

Surprisingly - I've yet to receive my invite. I wonder if it's got lost in the post?

Just to mention, I was referring to The Royal Wedding™, not Daniel's street binge-fest. :D

Now now Maggy you should have expected this and quite frankly I am surprised it took this long, in fact, with a forum comprised of so many Royalists, I am surprised this thread wasn't started the day the engagement was announced. :D

I may well be working that day, but regardless I will avoid it like the plague as I have every other royal event in living memory.

For those who like to protest without violence, there are better ways. For example http://www.mygoldmusic.co.uk/ on Virgin cable (959) is running a competition for the greatest hit of all time. Here is a few to select from 1. God Save The Queen by the Sex Pistols, 2. Hurricane by Bob Dylan, 3. Money by Pink Floyd, 4. 99 Red Balloons by Nena, 5. AutoBahn by KraftWork, 6. Oh So Quiet by Bjork, 7. Sunday Girl by Blondie (personal reasons), 8. Riders on the Storm by The Doors, 9. Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana and 10. Solitare by the Carpenters (if I have chosen the above it must be the only song for me). In a parallel universe, if I understand curvi-linear space, quantam mechanics and the Dirac Equation, there is a royal wedding taking place with the above song list. There is a side of me that would prefer this music. The washed and the great unwashed joining together in the Big Society for knees up, a bit of a laugh and a touch of bovver when the lights go down. Being disabled, it a case of the Dickension child chimmney sweep pressing his cold nose of the window of the sweetshop. I must take another hit of Vallium or I might get maudlin.

What ever the Tax payer has to pay will be far out weighed by the money bought into the economy due to the wedding.
Bit of a boring argument really since they have always bought in more that it's cost's to run the Royal's.

Well all those souvenirs of the day and event will be helping to employ someone, lots of someones and hopefully a fair few will be from this country.I get an extra holiday(and anyone who has to work will hopefully get paid a little extra for doing so) which is a good thing in my list of good and nice things that can happen this month.

In a time of cutbacks and a huge worldwide recession this is an event that can take off the edge for one short day.Why not just take it as a bonus day off and chill?

oh come on be fair Masque ,most of those jolly jaunts are paid for out the royal purse not the tax payer .The state will only pay for state occasions ,and don't forget the royal estates contribute millions of £'s towards the cost of running the whole household

Quote:

Head of State expenditure is the official expenditure relating to The Queen's duties as Head of State and Head of the Commonwealth.

Head of State expenditure has reduced significantly over the past decade, from £87.3 million in 1991-92 (expressed in current pounds) to £38.2 million in 2009-10. In the year 2009-10 The Queen cost the taxpayer just 62 pence per person.
Head of State expenditure is met from public funds in exchange for the surrender by The Queen of the revenue from the Crown Estate. In 2008-09 the Treasury’s gross receipts in respect of the Crown Estate were £230 million
basically the treasury earned £230m for an outlay of £38.2m ,not a bad return

Remember we are talking about Mr deadwood himself Andrew who will do anything for a game of golf and is to stupid to do anything constructive for the country, he is on par with his ex wife.

Who pays for the use of military aircraft especially ones that land in private gardens.

More fun and games from the highly tolerant and not at all childish West of Scotland.

Quote:

BOSSES at royal wedding cake makers McVitie's have banned their Scots staff from putting up a union Flag to celebrate the marriage.
They said the flag was not acceptable because of "direct connotations with football and sectarianism".
Staff at the McVitie's factory in Glasgow put up a British flag yesterday as they decorated their works canteen for the big day on Friday.
But management ordered it taken down after other employees complained that it was "offensive" and a threat to their "dignity at work".

It's not that this has just happened in the last couple of weeks - it has been the case in some places for many, many, years.

Regrettable and unfortunate yes, but it's not simply "ridiculous" when you look at the reasons behind some of the stated positions.

Gary L 27-04-2011 07:55

Re: The Royal Wedding 2011

It's because it's became widely accepted that if you want to be offended by something then someone will take notice of your objection.

we've allowed it to get to that stage, and there's no turning back.
other than to say get stuffed with your being offended.

No, actually, it isn't that simplistic - it's something far deeper. People have been capable of being offended for thousands of years, it's nothing new.

To address instances of offence being caused as a result of overt showings of nationalism one answer (at least one which has had a positive effect of reducing offence caused and offence taken) has been the enforcement of the Flags and Emblems Act which had dramatic positive effects here in Northern Ireland (at that time the most sectarian divided civilization in the West) when it banned the display of national flags (whether British or Irish) in workplaces and other certain public areas.

On that basis alone nobody can deny that the removal of national flags from workplaces where there are mixed denominations / religions and creeds has worked.

Oh I do love a wedding, I am not a royalist/ anti royalist, but I shall be watching tomorrow. I think Kate will make a very beautiful bride, I can visualise her wearing a fitted gown with with long train (she has a beautiful figure). They are very much in love that is obvious, and I for one will be raising a toast for their future happiness together! Bearing in mind also that this is a very historic occasion as Wills is going to be our future King. Will you be watching also I wonder? :)

Mini cabs are standard rate today in my essex town, but if its black cabs you are talking about not sure.I suppose as to them running it depends on how many drivers want to work probably.

Re: The Royal Wedding 2011

A bit of useless trivia :D

The stage manager of The X Factor will oversee television coverage. Diccon Ramsay, 27, will “cue” Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey.

Prince Harry is considered a safe pair of hands by bookmakers, with Ladbrokes offering odds as long as 100/1 that he will drop the ring.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, will give Prince William and Kate Middleton a tandem “Boris bike”

An unidentified gambler has bet £6,000 that Kate Middleton will wear a Russian fringe tiara borrowed from the Queen. A £6,000 bet at odds of 12-1 was placed at Ladbrokes in Ascot, Berks, on the tiara, which was made in 1919 for Queen Mary.

The country’s largest rail union, the RMT, will keep its head office in London open during Friday’s bank holiday because it opposes the monarchy. The staff could choose whether or not to work, a union spokesman added.

The odds on the Duke of Edinburgh falling asleep at the service were cut to 8/1 by William Hill. It is one of the firm’s most popular bets.

It's all a bit sickening, bombastic and pretentious really.

Ah well, if it makes people happy. I'm sure our street party later will be fun :)

I think the wedding was lovely (if not a bit long!) and Kate's dress was classy as expected, although a little daring (Madonna like across the bust) and famously see-through across the shoulders. Her sister looked like she'd spent too long in the fake bake booth, but her dress was amazing and very flattering to her shape.

I was a little disappointed they didn't jump on a harley and drive off in the sunset, but the aston martin was a nice touch :)

Well, I think we can safely say there isn't another nation on Earth that can put on a show as well as that. Hollywood would spend millions on a thousand takes and still not end up with anything that looked as good.

Even if you have absolutely no affection whatsoever for the royal family and our constitution, you have to admit, you can't buy the sort of positive publicity for our great country that today's events have brought.

And, to top it all, a couple that are obviously very much in love have tied the knot and are starting life together. Wonderful. :)

Yes, very well organised and I'd like to give the police and security services a big  To control those numbers of people as well as they did was a complete success.

AN unofficial street party in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Park was descending into violence tonight as police stuggled to cope with a crowd of thousands of revellers.

Hundreds of thugs threw missiles at officers and at least three cops were injured.

Many of the 4000-strong crowd at the bash were boozing heavily and attacked officers as they tried to split up a fight.

I'm glad to see the day went well and they both looked very happy.

That said I think its important that the behind the scenes work that went on to make sure the day passed off incident free for the royals and the visting dignitaries should not be understated.

The task was a thankless one but Britain has its heroes such as Craig Phillips to thank for the smooth running of the day. The UK owes him, in particular, an incredible debt of gratitude for his selfless bravery.

:(

That'll be Camerons fault then

Quote:

The event was organised after David Cameron attacked "pen pushers and busybodies" for thwarting royal wedding celebrations.

The PM said : "They have no right to stop you from having fun. I am the Prime Minister and I am telling you if you want to have a street party, you go ahead and have one."
