'Gay cure' Apple iPhone app: more than 80,000 complain

Quote:

Apple deemed the app to have 'no objectionable content'

Apple is under fire from gay rights activists after it approved an iPhone and iPad app targeting "homosexual strugglers".

More than 80,000 people have signed a petition against the so-called "gay cure" app, which Apple deemed to have "no objectionable content".

Exodus International, the pro-Christian group behind the app, promotes the "ex-gay" movement, encouraging people to change their sexuality. The app gives users "freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus", according to the group.

Apple had not returned a request for comment at the time of publication.

Ben Summerskill, chief executive of gay rights group Stonewall, said: "At Stonewall, we've all been on this app since 8am and we can assure your readers it's having absolutely no effect.

You could describe a lot of stuff on TV in exactly the same way. At least nobody is likely to stumble across this app - they would need to choose to search for and download it first.

Which would imply perhaps they want help to change. Therefore, if it works for them and makes them happy, why is it so bad?

That's a far bigger issue than an iOS app though Stu.

Stonewall's objection to this is deeply ironic. They say that young gay people who are confused about ther sexuality should not be exposed, basically, to the wrong opinions (ones that Stonewall disagrees with). The irony is that Stonewall campaigned fiercely against laws which were designed to prevent young people who may be confused about their sexuality from having a homosexual lifestyle promoted to them by local government, and they campaigned for equalisation of the age of consent on the basis that 16 year olds are quite capable of knowing their sexuality and making mature decisions about it.

I would have to say that I would be surprised if people were unsure of their sexuality at 16. I think it's naive to think that someones sexual preferences can be changed and the idea that homosexuality can be 'cured'.

Maybe, maybe not. The point is, people should be free to try if they wish, and others should be free to offer to help them try.

People are free to do as they wish. Doesn't mean we have to approve of it though. I worry about the mental state of someone who wants to 'change' their sexuality, I worry about their motivations for doing so and if the change is real or simply causing people to surpress their preferences and the damage that could do.

I am straight but it seems to me that what your attracted too is biological. It's certainly not something you control.

Better put: I worry about the claims people make that it can be cured. I think it implies it is something that can be cured, without much scientific basis, and perpetuates the idea something is wrong.

Chris 21-03-2011 20:51

Re: 'Gay cure' Apple iPhone app: more than 80,000 complain

But you don't have to approve of it for the app to exist on the app store. Stonewall doesn't have to approve of it. They just have to accept that there are people out there who view things differently. It's called tolerance - something Stonewall is supposed to believe in.

I don't care too much about the app. The problem is that Apple have a policy of screening applications and this time it's come back to bite them. They have rejected quite a few applications that might be deemed controversial and they have left themselves open to being asked why they let this one though. I think it was a mistake, and the app will be pulled.

Being Gay myself i remember how hard it was for me to come to terms with my sexuality, also having a gay brother it was harder for me for a number of reasons
1. I have always wanted kids.
2. I thought i was letting my family down by not having kids.
3. When my brother came out my mother was less than accepting at first.

Some people think that its a choice and u somehow decide one day in the same way u chose what car u want or what clothes to buy, u dont decide in the same way people dont suddenly decide they are str8.

i know of people who are unsure of their sexuality well into late teens and early 20s. It certainly does happen especially in bisexuals.

there's another one coming out called "how to stop suffering and dying, and causing misery to your family" that's through the power of Jesus too.

Be interesting to know whether the person who started the petition is actually gay themselves.

I think it could be the case that because Jesus is involved then it's seen as a sin to be gay. and there is a cure for it.

I have just this to say..

The app should be removed purely as it suggests that there is a cure for a predisposition.

Freedom of choice yes but in this case there isn't a choice as to if you are GLB or not. The only choice is are either a GLB who abstains from a relationship or one that embraces a relationship and as such the app is misleading and preys on misunderstanding and Apple should remove it based on that.

What next an app to cure yourself of being British??

It might be wrong, but who are Stonewall to tell people they're not allowed to be wrong? If people want to live in glorious ignorance, that's their choice, surely?

Stonewall have been too far up their own "you know where" since they had a their part in the riots of the late '60s. Anyone would think that they were the only group fighting the 'cause'.

Yes Chris you are right in that everyone has a choice to live in ignorance or not but there are rules as to what is promised with items sold and their effectiveness in these claims.

All this will do is make a lot more people unhappy in their lives :(

Not really much of a valid reason, and certainly not one for people to get upset about, any sane person will just dismiss it for the nonsense it is.

If someone wants to create one, then why not. It would be laughed at by the vast majority.

Why is it that when anyone happens to disagree with anything homosexual they suddently get "offended", the source is "Homophobic" and the tolerance they so desperately promote suddenly vanishes.

Well it seems odd that they should tolerate those being intolerant of them. I don't think they are being intolerable towards heterosexuals but they are quite combative against those who express disdain or have a problem with them.

An app that Some Christians made because they think being gay is a sin.

Quote:

Exodus upholds heterosexuality as God’s creative intent for humanity, and subsequently views homosexual expression as outside of God’s will. Exodus cites homosexual tendencies as one of many conditions that beset fallen humanity. Choosing to resolve these tendencies through homosexual behavior, taking on a homosexual identity, and involvement in a homosexual lifestyle is considered destructive, as it distorts God’s intent for the individual and is therefore sinful.
Instead, Christ offers a healing alternative to those with homosexual tendencies. Exodus upholds redemption for the homosexual person as the process whereby sin’s power is broken, and the individual is freed to know and experience their true identity, as discovered in Christ and His Church. That process includes the freedom to grow into heterosexuality.

I do love how tolerance is preached and absolutely right so long as it's in one direction. Zero point in giving these guys free publicity by getting outraged. This is something that has to be actively sought out and downloaded and if not this app there are plenty of other sources of content that will attempt to convince someone to change their sexual orientation.

The best reaction to this nonsense is usually indifference. The same indifference that homosexuality should be treated with.

Well, there's another victory for those who think that only allowing correct thinking is more important than allowing free thinking.

Although, as you say, given that Apple has made itself a hostage to fortune by choosing to vet every iPad app, the outcome is not surprising.

Apple's Store has never been about free thinking. As you say they vet every app and therefore choose what they associate their platform with. Ultimately suggesting homosexuality is something that can (and should) be cured is not something they wanted to be involved with.

Oh I know that - the App Store is an extension of Apple's corporate brand. But Apple is suffering today because it allowed the app in the first place, which tells all those who object that, in and of itself, Apple didn't think there was anything wrong with it.

Apple is a hostage to fortune because it is known to pre-moderate everything. Therefore everything it allows onto the store has implicit approval and association with the brand.

What I find slightly depressing in all this is not Apple's behaviour, but the intolerant behaviour of the objectors, who have actively moved to suppress the expression of a world view and a way of living that they disagree with. After years of campaigning against that sort of suppression in their own lives you would have thought they would have known better.

But then I've never believed that one group of people persecuting another group of people for what they believe is the exclusive preserve of religion, so while it's depressing, it's not surprising.

I believe there is a higher plain of life, wheather a God? Well thats something up for discussion, if there was such a thing why now is he letting so many bad things happen? Why does he let so many people suffer? Why is it that 2000 years ago so many magic and and wonderful things occured in the form of miracles. To me the Bible if full of nothing but tales that have been exaggerated more and more over time and was just created to try and get people to follow a certain order.

True.
some will say that was a good thing. but if it's not true, and it was all made up. then how can it be good that you're living a lie in the way that you just want to believe it, and then you base your belief on how you live your life. and expect others that don't believe to live theirs?

it wouldn't be too bad if those that did believe would mind their own business when it comes to telling those that don't believe how they are expected to be.

I think it would be a mistake to think Apple didn't think there is anything wrong with it. Rather someone whose job it is to sit though and approve or reject applications all day had let one slip by. In this case it's likely an error of judgement.

Obviously they represent Apple and it does tarnish their brand. It highlights a flaw in their approval process, that individual members of staff have to make judgement calls which could impact negatively upon Apple's brand. A lot more difficult that simply checking if the application is harmful to the device or breaks one of the technical rules imposed on developers by Apple.

I don't think they are the same thing. Suppression of Homosexuals is not, in my opinion, the same as suppression of those who think that Homosexuality is an illness. People who are homosexuals are not affecting other peoples lives, or certainly don't intend to do so. Whereas those* who are actively opposing homosexuality are certainly seeking to impact upon the lives of others, for something they almost certainly cannot control. I think that opposition to that is justified.

That's not to say I think it should be made illegal but people are certainly entitled to oppose the people who express those views and to protest those who give them a platform to do so.

*'Those' being people who are actively promoting the notion that homosexuality is a illness and can be cured. Not people who are religious, or those who think it is a sin. These groups are not the same thing.

Thats not true at all, there are many groups who are impacting the lives of many other people in the name of homosexuals. You only have to think back to the couple who were taken to court because they didnt want to allow same sex couples in their guest house - and the multitude of other examples.

But Homosexuals are to Stonewall what Christians are to people who promote the idea that Homosexuality is an illness. They are not all response for the actions committed by a few in their name. There is a difference between Homosexuals and those who are more militant about it and all sorts of people in between.

Chris, unless I misunderstood him, said that he is disappointed that those who have experienced intolerance are doing to the same to the people behind it/in favour of this application.

However I am saying that I feel there is a substantial difference between intolerance of homosexuals and intolerance of people who actively encourage the notion that homosexuality is a illness.

Everything in it's context..

Homosexual acts still has a recent past of being illegal in this country up to 1967 and is still illegal in some countries, yet heterosexual intercourse is not yet as we can see both have been around for a long, long time.. So in that respect the law and it's implications is trying to educate others that this is not something that can still be discriminated against.. It's a bit like racism, sexism and other recent changes in acceptable society.. Maybe a century or two later we won't need any of these discrimination laws as everyone will see everyone else as a human being..

We do though live in hope

I think the app is more of a joke than anything, people are too sensative, plus welshchris, homosexuals are not targetted as much as you would think, I know years the case was different but society is alot more accpeting now, people just like to complain because they can, the app should be taken as a joke nothing else.

That would be because race and sexuality are not the same thing ... not that I would condone anyone 'targeting' anyone else for any reason, mind you.

Re: 'Gay cure' Apple iPhone app: more than 80,000 complain

This could be long..

As I see it, the problem is intolerence, particularly of other's views. This is sadly happening on both sides. Stonewall believe they are right to promote Homosexuality and that any attempt to "cure" it is wrong.

The Religious people (I hesitate to use the word Christian as I don't believe for a second that all Christians believe it) say that it is wrong to promote homosexuality and right to attempt to "cure" it.

The thing is, it looks like both groups are actively trying to restrict the rights of people to disagree with them. That is wrong.

People should (IMO) feel free to be what they are (within the law), without any coercion. If they are happy with themselves, whether gay or straight, good. We all deserve to be.

If they are unhappy, organisations (like Stonewall and the Church) should help them get to a situation where they are happy, but should, IMO try and avoid placing any pressure on them to be one way or the other.

I also believe Homosexuality is not something that can be cured, as it isn't actually something wrong. Saying you can cure it is like saying you can cure someone who is ginger. You can't. Being Ginger is a fact of life, as is Homosexuality.

Because it's a Christian group that developed the App?

Btw: One thing that hasn't been mentioned before is that Exodus claims to be a group of 'ex-gays'. Thus, they are gay and struggling with it due to their religious beliefs. The app is (allegedly) for people in the same position. Now whether you like it or not, it does mean that there are people in this position, and as such the app could be said to cater to them rather than just being an attempt to force others to conform to their religious beliefs.

Personally, I think it's very sad if people can't align their sexual orientation with their religious beliefs (I know which one I'd shed), but at the end of the day it's their choice.

I have no problem with people who don't believe, I have lots of issues with those who seek to mock the beliefs of those with faith, and knock us at any opportunity purely because we have beliefs they don't agree with. I'm sure you know such people very very well. These are the ones I consider to be 'rabid atheists'.

This saga just reminds me why having a hardware platform that is hostage to a single arbiter of what you can and can't do with it (ok, you can jailbreak, but that has it's own problems) is a bad idea.

An app which breaks no laws, gets shouted down by a rabble - what price free speech?

Matth, but people who are out to cause problems or belittle minorities always hide behind the free speech rubbish and its tiresome. Im not saying this is the case here but it a guarentee that if pulled up on it they will claim its free speech.

Nothing to do with free speech. A right to free speech, which we don't have by law by the way, doesn't entitle you to a platform.

"Free speech" doesn't give anyone the right to cry "fire" in a crowded cinema - with rights, come responsibilities.

We live with a Common Law system here in Blighty ... Generally that means everything is allowed except for those things that have been specifically forbidden. It is a red herring to say we don't have free speech by law, when we don't need a law in order to grant it. Common Law systems are far more robust in that way. Free speech is restricted in the UK in specific circumstances where it might result in a crime or in damage to personal reputation.

On the specific issue of platform, you are correct that you don't have the right to roll up on someone's private property and say what you want without being able to be moved on, and in that sense the App Store is Apple's private property. However, here in the UK you do have a right to a public platform. There is nothing to stop you standing on a soap box on the high street to share your views on any subject.

Edit

Naturally this issue is complicated by the fact that the app is made in, and distributed from, the USA, not the UK.
