Tivo Recording

Hi

Seems like with the Tivo you can't watch another live TV channel whilst recording.
This seems like a step back - certainly the V+ box doesn't have this restriction.

Is this going to change - seems strange - as the purpose of recording is so that you don't have to watch the programme at the time.

Thanks

Thats incorrect. At present you can watch one live channel and record a second. Or you can record two channels and watch a previously recorded show. By april you will be able to watch live tv and record two channels or record three channels and watch a previously recorded show. Where did you get your info from?

regards

John.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Your info is incorrect. The TiVo has 3 tuners in it and at present only two are active, this means you can either record something and watch another live channel or record two shows and watch back a recording just like Sky+

However once the software update is rolled out TiVo will be able to record 2 live channels and watch a third live channel. Or record 3 live channels and watch back a recording.

Hi
The user guide says you can watch a previously recorded programme and record 2 others. When I tried to navigate away from the T V programme being recorded the message came up that this would cancel the recording.
From what you day it looks like this will be sorted in April

Cheers

Yes that is what I mentioned in my post about activating the third tuner via a software update.

Currently you can record 1 and watch something else or record 2 and watch one of them.

Out of interest Stephen, why is this? Is there a reason that the 3rd tuner wasn't activated at launch time?

Also on a similar subject. Does anyone know if the Scart connector can be used to archive recordings to an external DVD recorder in a similar way to the V+ box. In other words, is output available both on HDMI and Scart simultaniously or does the Tivo have an archive function, or is this not possible?

This would be a deal make/breaker for me.

Thanks.

Hi, it's been mentioned a few times on the forum but I see you have just joined.

TiVo as it is has never had three tuners. It's only ever had two, so in order for VM TiVo to have three tuners TiVo have had to re write the system code to allow three tuners so it's taken them a while to do so.

TiVo currently doesn't have an archive feature but we may I the future have access to stream/transfer recordings around the home.

Oh crap that's something I wasn't aware of. So I won't be able to back films up onto my HDD? Would have thought that would be a standard feature.

A much more smarter feature is planned. ;)

On the VM/Cisco TIVO box would it be possible to stream your recordings to iPad like they are considering in the USA ?

Does seem a good feature for iPad users. So am I right in thinking if your box was on that if it was introduced at a later date that you could watch your DVR recordings over the Internet while away.

My understanding (I don't have one but have been reading the threads for weeks now in anticipation) is that you can do it, but it would have to be manually and would have to be on the current tuner. Apparently there's no archive feature like the V+ but you could set the programme to play and record it to your external drive. Bit of a pain, but possible.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I've picked up from the other threads.

This is correct :)

Once we get streaming sorted, then it'll make this better than V+ for transfering programmes.

Won't that have DRM/copyright implications?

Sorry to be dumb. Can I clarify this? Are you saying that although the Tivo box doesn't have a 'Copy to VCR/DVD' function like the V+ box, it does allow you to play back a recording from it's HDD and record it to your DVD recorder via Scart whilst watching it via HDMI?

In other words it outputs via both connectors simultaniously rather than turning the Scart off?

If this is the case, does it do this for HD recordings too? Outputing SD via Scrart obviously.

Many thanks.

It's been reported on foruums that both are active at the same time, so, yes.

I've copied HD recordings via the V+, which is scart, so I don't see why the tivo cant; the copied recording will be SD of course.

I think I've read that the scart is RGB capable, so that will be better quality than the composite of the VCR scart output on the V+; not sure if it is RGB, but it ought to be.
