BT Infinity Speed Checker

Is it accurate?

The standard BT broadband speed checker tells me I can get up to 4.4mb but I barely get 2mb.

The Infinity checker tells me i can get 27.1mb, is this accurate or am I likely to get less?

MadGamer 08-03-2011 11:44

Re: BT Infinity Speed Checker

The 27.1mb is an estimate, you will likely receive a higher speed. For example, I checked the other day, (even though I have the service and it states I should get 25mb, but I actually get just over 30mb).

Re: BT Infinity Speed Checker

I find the BT checker to be generally accurate (and a conservative underestimate in most cases) but obviously it varies and it doesn't seem to be that way for you.

when my mate was testing it for BT before it was rolled out he was one of the lucky ones in Whitchurch in Cardiff. He was getting around 36mb down and around 6mb up.

BT Infinity is going to be avilable in my area for ages yet but I love my VM 30Mb/3Mb

Haha, although not quite as good as both my 50Mb's running on a load balancing router :-)

Infinity is a solid product if you live enar a nodal cabinet, but if you live near the end of the line then its really not a massive speed increase over ADSL2+. My DSL line pumps out 9Mb so not a massive difference.

Re: BT Infinity Speed Checker

Before Infinity I was getting around 1 to 1.5mb, I now get 30mb down and 7.5/8mb up

Re: BT Infinity Speed Checker

Well a swift and painless install and a pretty large speed increase

It would be interesting to see how it performs on the TBB ping monitor

There's only one way to find out, but there doesn't appear to be any takers.

Re: BT Infinity Speed Checker

someone posted a ttb ping monitor onto the thread in the internet service forum

it was green with a nearly smooth top

Re: BT Infinity Speed Checker

I signed up to the think broadband monitor but I can't find anyway on the new home hub to get it to respond to pings without disabling the whole firewall which I don't want to do.

Hi I have just been sent a super hub modem at 30Meg.
Had to update my laptop wireless, PC plugs into hub
getting the speeds at 30 in the UK, drops of to 50% in the USA.
If the bt infinity arrives in Bradford, I would change to that, a saving of £40 PM.

Re: BT Infinity Speed Checker

This might be a stupid question, but can someone confirm something for me. Is this "Infinity" product the FTTC thing that BT promised as part of the C21 upgrades some time ago, or something different?

I ask only out of pure interest as my local BT exchange here in Knaresborough was supposed to be C21-enabled last month but I don't think it's happened yet.

Thanks.

Re: BT Infinity Speed Checker

Not sure, If it as good as people say, it is well worth investigating.
I am happy with VM services.
It's the prices for old customer that I don't like.

BT never promised FTTC as part of 21CN.

WBC 21CN means services go from maxing out at 8Mbps to going to 20Mbps - ADSL to ADSL2+, this through connection to new equipment at the exchange and backhaul via an all IP network rather than ATM for the first leg.

The whole package . 30 Meg BB, TV XL and Phone XL costs me £92.50 from VM
the same package from BT is £52.00 with an 10 Meg increase.
that is what BT Infinity website quotes. that as to be worth looking into

Just got my monthly SamKnows report for my Infinity connection.

39.39Mbps
Average downstream.

8.77Mbps
Average upstream.

Both higher than I was told to expect by the BT speed checker.

TBB graph.

My bad, my IP changed so I deleted the existing one on TBB not realing it would also deleted the graph I posted here.

I'll post a live one when it's been given time to plot a little bit. Bear with me.

You'll have to give it time to populate results.

Actually it's a good time to start a graph as I'll be swiching files between servers at about 8 tonight which will put the connection under a bit of load.
