BT to remove 300GB FUP

Cant find the report online, but in the Times (business section), BT are rumoured to be removing the 300GB FUP from next month.

BT Total Broadband and BT Infinity customers will benefit from the removal of Fair Usage Policy (FUP) controls when they begin to be removed from April 2011. Once removed, heavy user customers will be able to download/stream as much as they wish without having their speeds restricted.

BT will remove the FUP controls currently applied to customers with ‘atypical’ usage. Today atypical users are restricted at 300GB usage and account for less than 0.5% of the BT customer base. BT will not target any individuals with restrictions based on usage levels. However, we still have traffic management policies that will restrict certain applications / protocols, such as P2P, when the network is busy.

As BT continues to invest in the network and network bandwidth we can now remove these restrictions and ensure the experience of the wider customer base.
Well done BT.

I'm surprised anyone is able to download 300gb with the heavy restrictions they put in place, hehe.

BT's Total Broadband and Infinity offerings just got considerably more attractive to those concerned about falling foul of VM's AUP / DUP / FUP.

If you're being forced to end automatically recurring 18 month contracts I suppose you have to try to appear nicer to your customers. ;)

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. YES.

Excellent move BT.

Wonder what VM's PR folk will have to say about this... "Speed honesty" + "unlimited" ≠ "opaque variable usage limits" and FUPs

Post out in the wide world - http://www.techradar.com/news/intern...s&attr=newsall

This only affects BT's top tier of Infinity and Total broadband products, so it doesn't make it that different to Virgins current offerings from what I see.

Virgin's marketing and sales are no doubt on the case as we speak :)

*ahem*

However, BT confirms that a "traffic management" policy will remain "that will restrict certain applications / protocols, such as P2P, when the network is busy."

It should be pointed out that people on BT Total Broadband Options 1 and 2 and BT Infinity Option One will still be charged for going over their data limits – but will not have their traffic managed.
So, while they no longer have a cap, they *will* traffic manage at peak times (which could be argued that they are not being honest on the speed) and they will charge those on some tariffs who go over the limit.

Re: BT to remove 300GB FUP

Could be worse Stuart. They could be claiming to be unlimited while slowing people down on 5 of 6 packages for using too much bandwidth at the wrong times, managing traffic at peak times and even with all this sending letters to customers for breaking an undisclosed limit - all operational simultaneously.

BT can now claim the moral high ground over VM as far as limits go, VM's service having multiple limits both open and hidden while their unlimited packages have application shaping only.

Re: BT to remove 300GB FUP

I am not saying I think VM have the moral high ground. In fact, I agree that compared to Virgin, this is a good thing. I personally don't think either ISP is entirely honest.

Re: BT to remove 300GB FUP

I'd say part of the reason BT have done this is down to Virgins campaign to make ISPs more honest about claiming they're Unlimited when they're not. sort of thing.

Well done to Virgin Media.
I wonder if they'll do the same now?

Re: BT to remove 300GB FUP

Wasn't aware VM were doing a campaign about ISPs claiming to be unlimited when they aren't, that wouldn't just be throwing stones in glass houses it'd be letting off nukes in glass houses as they're among the most misleading in that regard.

The campaign was about honest advertising of speeds and largely a waste of time and a pure PR effort by VM as most suppliers follow Ofcom's code of conduct and give an estimated speed at time of order.

Advertising 20Mb ADSL then advising at the point of sale are two different things though, A customer would have already made up their mind by the time they are told what speed they should expect. And the vast majority of customers dont care/dont understand what it all means anyway.

Just as well they advertise 'Up to' and note restrictions due to line length and other factors within the advertisements as a general rule.

See attachment 1 for caveats on speed, number 2 for information. Seems quite clear.

Bit like advertising unlimited downloads, download as much as you like, then noting in the small print that Traffic Management, Application Management and Detrimental User Policy applies really.

In any event it's all getting tidied up.

Good to see you've your finger on the consumer pulse and know what people consider when buying a service, you're wasted in New Build.
