Any free Adult site filtering software?
Someones asked me about blocking adult sites as their 'young un' as managed to get onto a few. Is there any free software that's good for blocking adult content?
I know you can't stop them getting on every adult site but is there a good program to block out most sites? |

Microsoft have an offering too.
I'd recommend it and use it on our family laptop to stop kids seeing and searching for adult sites. http://explore.live.com/windows-live...tials?os=other |
Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
The other option the to do it at the gateway but that requires you to use something like a PC as the router.

OpenDNS ;)

Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
Highly recommend opendns aswell. Been using it on my kids laptops for the last few years. Very easy to setup too

Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
The main criteria is it's 'fire and forget' as the person who wants it hasn't a clue how to configure white/black lists etc and I won't be administering it.
M$ has similar stuff in the browser, Content > Parental Controls, but means faffing about setting it up. Open DNS seems a better option as I guess it's either a new DNS address and/or a proxy server. Do you guys use the Free version or the paid? |
Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
OpenDNS is free ... I wasn't aware of there being any paid version. They make their money by selling anonymized, aggregated web browsing data to marketing companies.

Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
Just tried the free OpenDNS and once configured (must remember to alter settings in ROUTER not Browser :dunce: ) I couldn't post to any forum or go to my fave pr0n sites :D
So I'm going to recommend they sign up for the free OpenDNS option, once web filtering is enabled it should be enough. |
Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
The thing to remember with OpenDNS is, unless your internet connection comes with a static IP, you really do need to keep the OpenDNS Updater app running on the main PC in the household (the one that is switched on all or most of the time).
If your IP address changes, OpenDNS needs to know this so it can continue screening what is sent to you. This is more of an issue on ADSL connections where dynamic IPs can change quite frequently ... on VM cable the 'dynamic' IP addresses are actually pretty static. If OpenDNS updater isn't running, it's very, very easy to circumvent the protection the service provides, even without admin access to the router. Common sense prevents me from posting how. |
Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
I think the person concerned only uses laptops so I guess it needs to be installed and run on each laptop just in case!!
|
Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
Ideally, yes - but are they on VM cable broadband? If they are it's not so critical because the IP address allocated to each subscriber doesn't change very often.

Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
Not sure, I'll have to enquire on that one!

Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
If you want preconfigured adult filtering, then the "Familyshield" openDNS may be better
http://www.opendns.com/familyshield It uses different server addresses, and actually tends to test as being faster than ordinary opendns. Also, no need for it to track YOUR settings, since the filter options apply to the server, for everyone. FS addresses

Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
Thanks, I'll try both 'when' they decide to get back to me.

Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
OK, said person has now brought the laptop round but didn't wan't the router touching as it's 'working' and didn't want to mess about with it, FFS!! They are on O2 broadband btw.
Ended up using IE's Parental Controls (tried explaining the software options but may as well been speeking to the table!) had to give their account a password as they had admin rights and demote the account they want monitor to a Standard User as that had admin rights as well! So that's all I could do, IE's Family Safety filtering is now enabled in the Standard User account and they've fecked off happy! Cheers for all your suggestions, rep on the way!! |
Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
You could just set the Open DNS address on the particular machine, it'll override the defaults sent by the gateway
|
Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
It's a shared laptop so don't think that would have worked and I don't think you can have per user DNS settings? They seemed reluctant to install software or fiddle with the router, tried showing them OpenDNS but for whatever reason they preferred the Parental Controls option.
Their loss though! |
Re: Any free Adult site filtering software?
yep certainly is their loss, openDNS is great, means I can quite happily let my 7 yr old daughter and her friends play on her PC in her room as i know the whole lot is locked down tight.
Oh, and you can get round openDNS by setting the DNS manually on an individual PC as I have done with my work one in my home office, all others in the house use dynamic settings from the router so go through openDNS. |

If you have a DD-WRT/Tomato or other router that supports configuration of it's outbound NAT you DST-NAT port 53 to openDNS. Then it doesn't matter what DNS servers are set on the client device as that request is going to goto openDNS regardless. Then the user would have to do something like use a VPN/Proxy to get around it |
