How to make a tax payer weep

As some of the CF members may know i work for local authorities fitting doors and windows for council house refurbishments ,as you can imagine i come accross some pretty scummy people but today i was fitting in a house in Newcastle were a 19yr old girl was visiting her sister to use the laptop for facebook .She struck up conversation by talking about her "terrible" life because the social had stopped her money because she hadn't been looking for a job ,and now only gets enough to support her 2yr child who is in daycare/preschool or whatever .I replied that "yes the government are cracking down now so you will have to get a job" she replied "nah ,i knew they would stop it so i got pregnant again now they will have to give me my dole back,i'll have about 4 bairns by the time i'm 25"

I think Cameron et al have their work cut out for them changing attitudes like that ,it makes me feel like giving up now and just not bothering

Felt like it ;)

I know it's been going on forever ,but i was under the impression that this and past governments had been clamping down to put a stop to it .It's obviously a tougher problem than the governments that have tried to tackle it care to admit because they are trying to reconcile making sure that young children don't suffer and older children ,like her ,don't take advantage of the system

problem is that in that family they'll never get out of that life style. And biggest problem for us the taxpayer is that it'll continue to happen

Re: How to make a tax payer weep

I'll have to start another thread really, but I was wondering with all these stopping of benefits for not looking for work now. people will be going without benefits for weeks/months/years.

how we will as a nation be towards these people that in real life will be homeless and hungry. if all goes according to plan the figures could and should be thousands.

thousands that will have had their benefits stopped and on the what was once a 'poverty' status. one where nearly everybody would say we shouldn't let there be poverty in this generation.

what if someone or even a family die as a result of 'benefit sanctions'?
it may and will happen further down the line where this may well happen, and the government has to reverse everything so this doesn't happen again.

maybe?

All he has to do is bring out a law that says you can have benefits and allowances etc for the first child.

Any offspring you produce after that you pay for yourself.

If you can't afford to have children then don't, there's loads of childless couples would gladly take them off your hands.

But that will turn out the same as saying if you have another child. it'll have to starve. and we can't and won't allow that to happen.

We'll give the child food to eat and clothes to wear by way of benefits to their mum.

but the problem is though how can we as a society do what you said ie benefits for the first child only and then sit back and watch subsequent children suffer ,bear in mind that not all children are planned .It is the attitude i found maddening ,"it's the governments money so it doesn't matter" that is what really has to change unfortunately it is the hardest thing to change

Re: How to make a tax payer weep

The law states that she must have enough benefits to live on, the law states that if she has more children they will be provided for. Until the law changes in your favour, there's not much you can do about it.

If only the government stopped giving billions of tax payers ££'s away, in aid to other countries such as India, and instead started investing in this country, then maybe this wouldn't be so much of a problem?

Let's tend to the crumbling foundations of our own home, before trying to prop up someone elses.

That's a thought. has the law actually changed for the requirement of actively seeking work to receive benefits. and has this overridden the once 'the law states this is the minimum you need to live on' thing?

Jimmy-J 21-02-2011 19:35

Re: How to make a tax payer weep

If she doesn't provide proof of seeking employment, then they can only stop part of her benefit, not all of it. And the children will still be provided for... As far as I know?

I don't think the law needed to change ,as far as i understood it you only got benefits(job seekers) as long as you were available for work ,if you are not looking for work or unable to work then you don't get anything ,that has always been the case as far as i know .In the case i have posted about she will still get money for the 2 yr old but nothing for herself untill she proves she is looking for work ,or becomes pregnant again ,i believe the latter will put her on a different benefit i think

I have very little knowledge of the benefit system so am willing to be corrected ;)

pregnancy they will get income support, the same as JSA but no work required.

im expecting my second child in april i am currently unemployed (lost job end december) but my girlfriend works 16 hours (going on maternity in 4 weeks) and earns about £100 per week.. the job centre LAUGHED in my face when i tryed to claim JSA they would not even pay MY STAMP... how about that..

Hugh 22-02-2011 16:26

Re: How to make a tax payer weep

Did they give a reason why they wouldn't pay your stamp.

When I was made redundant, and given pay in lieu of notice, I still signed on to get my NI paid.

PeteLockwood 22-02-2011 17:08

Re: How to make a tax payer weep

they said i hadnt payed enough NI apparently however they said the year 06 and 07 (both years i was at college and also had a weekend job earning around £130 per week) and since leaving college i have been in constant employment too (except since december 10 - current), believe it or not they actually ADVISE me NOT to appeal

Hugh 22-02-2011 17:15

Re: How to make a tax payer weep

I would appeal, or at least gain some more clarity from them - I have been made redundant a couple of times (with pay in lieu of notice), and have always been able to sign on just for the NI payment (no other benefit).

Re: How to make a tax payer weep

i guess il give them a ring tomorow then (il have to make a new claim i think) and see what is what, thanks hugh

Appeal definately that is bang out of order and as for the pregger's girl i am not surprised it is a common attitude amongst a small group of people these days and sickens me as well. I think the government has the right to say that if someone claims benefit they must accept they cannot keep knocking kids out and have to act responsibly while in reciept of benefit sadly though you would have to get some in a classroom and explain responsibility before that could happen.

exact same thing happened to my son , he was beside himself with worry about how to survive so i pointed him in the direction of the black economy ,good wages no tax and no questions.. as far as i am concerned the government had their chance to help ,and a man has a duty to provide for his family whatever it takes .
