Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

How do people feel on this issue?

We all know that there are people out there bleeding the system with false claims but they are only really small in number in the grand scheme of things.

Now this Goverment, and the Daily Mail have taken it upon themselves to brand everyone as Benefit cheats on Incapacity benefit. And with newspapers like the Daily Mail making false headlines with next to no research saying 2 million disabled on incapacity benefit are faking it, is absolutely disgusting.

How in the world does the Daily Mail get away with writing such garbage on this issue? Do they not give a damn about people with disabilitys, do they not think disabled people exist? How can they write articles saying 94 percent of claimants are faking it?

No idea how many people are following this but ATOS the people who do these medicals are frauds, hundreds of thosands people are having to go to tribunals because these clowns are falsely declaring them fit for work with 70 percent of these cases being won if they have representation.(i.e help from Citizens advice).

The appeals system is currently in a huge backlog, with people waiting up to 6 months to get an appeal heard, and in this time they have to live on reduced benefits(As much as 30 pounds a week less). These appeals are costly to the taxpayer, yet so many are being won, which proves that these *Medicals* Are a farse.

Yet it seems as anyone on Incapacity Benefit has been demonised by the Goverment and Daily Mail, we all have to get *Re tested* i.e *Kicked off* regardless of condition.

This isn't a way to help the legitimately disabled, this is just kicking the people who NEED to benefit off the benefit to save a few quid because the disabled are an easy target for them.

You may want to pay attention to your newspapers/news sites, although none of them report on the high amount of successful appeals on ESA, as they spout Goverment propaganda. It will be an interesting read from April.

Basically from April they want to *Re assess* 2.6 million on the benefit. This is where the system collapses, with tens of thosands of appeals left to be heard every month, it's going to be chaos.

Anyway, why does no one care about the Disabled in society anymore? It's like the Daily Mail, and it's staff have no morals, or anyone disabled in their families. The way they've demonised benefit claimants with badly written articles saying everyone on the benefit is cheating the system is so. Morally wrong.

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

It's just like some of the other stuff they write about, they'd like us to believe that nearly all Muslims are terrorists, all BNP/EDL members are racist thugs, and that nearly everyone on benefits are cheating ****. The sad thing is, there are many, many people that believe it. What we should believe is, some of the media are just a bunch of **** stirrers.

I've been through an appeal for my benefits some years back, it took more than 6 months to finally have my appeal heard, but I won the appeal and got the benefits that I was rightly entitled to. I advise everyone who has had their benefits stopped or reduced for no realistic reason i.e nothing about your claim has changed for the better, to go straight to their local CAB for advice. Don't let the *******s get to you! (Easier said than done) because those 6+ months without my proper benefits were really bad.

Virtually all of the pilot schemes have found the majority of claimants were fit for work.

No system is ever ideal but I'd rather people were given the chance to work rather than parking them on disability.

The Government WANT to save money, so they will hit everyone they think won't argue with them.

What theyn have to do, is decide who is in that ' category' can they walk, can they run, can they jump, do they need assistance etc, if you can, to them you don't need benefit.

My brother in law is crippled with arithus and he goes for a medical each year to assess him for benefit, he cannot work, but he has been told that if he can walk properly, they WILL make him find a job.

This government has to start somewhere else, like stopping benefits from immagrants who ponce on our system and getting benefits by living in a 1.5 million pound house that was recently in the news, instead of picking on people who cannot depend on themself.:(

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

I stopped reading the daily mail years ago, they are a disgusting paper even worse than rubbish like the sun. It often prints rubbish with no backing of facts. What is disgusting is if someone prints something about a individiual or company they have to be more careful else they done for it without proof (libel), yet on a regular basis benefit claimants are called all sorts of names and lied about by papers.

Not going to go into the ins and outs of the medical other than to say the new medical has been deemed unfit for purpose by various people (including the guy who designed it) however that has been ignored by the current and past governments so as such its clear what the agenda is.

The paper's should only be printing facts and need a tough watchdog to enforce this.

Thats because they designed to do just that, they simply moved the goalposts until they got the result they wanted. These pilot schemes have told terminal cancer patients to go look for work. Want to help people work? then they need specialist work environments and employers who are willing to accept crippled workers who will have a poor attendance record. Employers like remploy which got scrapped. Removing people's benefit and telling them to queue up for jobs with healthy people is not helping them.

I see the universal credit is starting to hit the news now.

more rubbish really, he talks as if everyone on benefits is doing it out of choice. Very out of touch.

Doesn't change that more people than ever before are on benefits out of choice Chrysalis, which must be addressed.

The balance is the rub though, of course.

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

You cannot solve the problem by placing ALL disabled on the same list.

I pay my taxes to not just provide funding for the infrastructure but I also expect there to be a safety net involved for the most vulnerable of society whom don't have family to take care of them.

Yes I expect everyone including the genuinely incapacitated to be able to work if they can and want to BUT the reality is that no amount of heavy handed persuasion to get them off benefit will help to do so UNLESS there are employers prepared to accept them and the extra costs involved in employing them due to funding specialist equipment so they can be in the workplace.

dilli-theclaw 18-02-2011 07:56

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

Yup, my main barrier has been finding someone willing and the cost of specialist equipment.

Still, things are looking up - although I've had to put it all on hold for a couple of months 'till I'm more mobile again.

I do agree something needs to be done to sort it out, I'm just not convinced the govt are going to do enough to help those who need the assitance to look for work.

I hope things to change for the better as I've been turned away multiple times from the job centre and they had nothing to do with me finally getting a job.

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

We can blame HMG for toughening up the system but if there weren't so many people abusing the system (either claiming entirely fraudulently or exagerrating their 'conditions' to qualify for benefits) it probably wouldn't be deemed necessary. As is the case with the abuse of the blue badge scheme, it's these people who are the problem NOT the genuine disabled.

Gary L 18-02-2011 08:48

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

There are real genuine claimants out there, but I think all the fraudulent claims are because most of the benefits are too great to lose.
As a kid I saw people claiming for anything and everything. and at the time they were entitled to it because of the system being how it was.

you have people on DLA and/or Mobility. when the time comes that they are no longer eligible for either, they have to give them up. so obviously they don't want to and maybe start using crutches again. where before they were walking normally and carrying heavy loads without a problem.

the problem with the media is that they do try to make out that every single person today that claims any benefit at all is a fraud or a waste of resources.

and those that don't claim any benefits actually believe it.

you could have someone on benefits that claims full rent, full council tax, a brand new car, free prescriptions and dental etc.. travel costs paid for. and whatever else comes with it.

when you got someone who works full time earning say £250 per week. out of that they have to pay full rent/mortgage, council tax, car costs, prescriptions and dental. and everything else.
you can see why it looks unfair, but that's how it is.

I personally don't have that much of a problem with it really. only if I knew the person or persons were taking the pee.

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

Derek i normally agree with most of your views usually on crime but on this sorry but your totally wrong the medical assessment system currently being used is a complete disgrace and isn't designed to do anything but class everyone as fit for purpose. I recently had an appointment with atos and the person i saw had never even heard of my condition so how the hell can they know what impact it has on me or my daily life or how it limits me and the answer was and ids that they didn't.

If you want to remove the genuinely disabled from the frauds the means to do it exist already most people with a genuine problem will be under the care of a consultant even if the exact problem hasn't been determined they will be seeing a consultant. So instead of handing large cheques to atos to run their usual farce remove all those currently under a consultant because trust me of all the consultants i have seen (sadly quite a few) none of them have been the type to maintain a patient they didn't believe had a genuine problem.

Here's the thing for me everyone wants all these frauds off the benefit system and is supporting the medical reasssessments to supposedly do this but these medicals cost the government more then a years benefit to do and they are neither done well or hold up on close examination with the decision being overturned in i think the current rate is about 74-75% of the time which again costs the government more money so the actual savings here are non existent.

As for the daily mail is there really anything i can say about this complete **** of a paper that hasn't been said before i don't think there is they are the perfect example of the "we will tell you who to be scared of and make some stuff up to scare you with" there is, they are one of the biggest problems in this country and in my mind far more of a problem then the minority of cheats in the benefit system.

I totally agree with all that you've said.

What gets me, is that the genuine people that can't work are being classed as 'Work-shy'. Basically as you stated, everyone that can blink or breath is being taken off sick as if they are miraculously cured off all illnesses then deemed fit for work.

It's all so easy to have an opinion on this subject when you're fit and healthy and pay your taxes.

There's no doubt that the geuniely sick and dsiabled can be stigmatised but I'd have thought removing the malingerers from the lists and putting those who would seek to do likewise from trying in the first place ought to reduce that stigma. If the Blue Badge scheme was such that it was impossible to abuse, then I believe the vast majority of people wouldn't have a problem with those who use it. It's the abuse of the system which hurts the genuinely sick/disabled a) because they're treated with suspicion and sometimes worse by people who don't believe they're genuine and b) because the resources wrongly taken by those defrauding the system are no longer available for the genuinely needy.

IMHO HMG has a duty to reform the system to make it fairer for those who really need it. Sadly, that'll involve reassessing a lot of people but there's no way around that. All we can hope is that common sense prevails and that the real effort is put into sorting out the dubious cases as opposed to those which are clearly in no doubt.

I have to make a confession to enjoying watching the BBC's Saints and Sinners.A show where benefit cheats are revealed and prosecuted and where people whom are genuinely in need are highlighted as are the organisations, most of them charities and non profit, that help such cases.:)

I like it because doesn't imply that everyone on benefits is a cheat but that those who do cheat are the lowest of the low.

Exactly. There ought to be more of this sort of thing in order to better educate the wider public about the problems disabled people face.

Sadly, it's not only the able boided who can be abusive to the disabled either. We've experienced some quite nasty comments and behaviour from other disabled people when taking our youngest into the disabled toilets. They assume because he's able bodied he isn't disabled. It's really very hurtful and you'd think they'd know better about making such assumptions....

This is a somewhat grey area as disabled loos are generally set out to cope with physical disabilities and these are the people they are designed for.

I have never known any of our MH or LD disabled tenants use the disabled loo at our work when they have been there on a visit

Whilst I will say I agree with your sentiments, what you say is pretty much what most people will say, but the real truth behind it all is far from it.

There isn't any common sense here, that's long gone, it's now a case of doom and gloom and the rest that goes with it. The genuine are living in fear when they should be helped, having people say it time and time again, it shouldn't be that way as doesn't make anything any easier.

Every single genuine case will want change, to stop those that are fraudulent etc, they want change that will help their case, to make it easier without jumping through many hoops and without fear that a suit will pass judgement within 10 minutes of meeting you. I don't see the point in these tests as it's not in the benefit of the claimant, it's not to help just to save money only.

Many people won't see the point in living and being a burden on those that are already pushed to their limits.

Our lad can't use non disabled public toilets as he had no concept of personal hygiene, safety etc. and we have to be with him a) to supervise/assist and b) in case he has a seizure. Severe disability comes in many forms and the disabled really ought to appreciate that more than anyone.

Well, as parents of a child who'll need lifelong care, we really do appreciate and share some of your concerns. The less abuse of the system there is, however, the fewer the excuses there will be for the 'suits' of whom you speak and dodgy newspapers to tar everyone with that brush and the more resources there'll be for the genuine.

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

It is harder when there is no obvious sign of disability as many with long term LD or MH problems will testify. These people will be known to local LD & MH teams so some thought should be given to the expertise of these people when care levels are re-assessed.

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

Osem you will not hear me or i believe any genuine claimant ever say the system is perfect or that it doesn't need to be reformed but the blanket way they are doing it is completely ridiculous it really is. There is an easy effective way to cut down the number of assessments needed and saving a very large amount of cash in the process by involving those health professionals that already deal with and are aware of the problems of many genuine claimants. Most fraudsters never see a consultant or if they do try and blag it do not succeed for very long before being found out and kicked off said consultants list so there is the start point.

Atos is a gaping chasm into which millions if not tens of millions of taxpayers money has gone and will continue to go and they are simply incompetent in every way that matters so to save 4-5k a year in benefit on a cheat your willing to pay them at least that amount and sometimes much more to kick someone off it really doesn't make any financial sense at all. This is pandering of the worst kind by this government to a section of our society that will never be happy while there is a single person claiming benefit be it me or your son.

I could probably stomach all of this a little easier if they had announced plans to go after the tax evader's who cost this country as much a year as the entire welfare budget but again we hear nothing on that and the daily hate is also completely silent on that issue. I have said many times in the past i am grateful to every single person who is working and in doing so enables me to be taken care of on the state but there comes a point where i am also sick and tired of being guilty by association with a tiny minority who abuse the system.

I hate and despise them more then taxpayers do because of people like them i have two hurdles to overcome when i look for work i have to overcome my disability and then if i can do that i have to convince an employer that i am not going to get the job have it for a bit and hop back on the sick because i am one of the **** that had to get a job or lose everything. Media like the daily mail do what they do on purpose they exaggerate the problem and in doing so make it virtually impossible for any claimant to get a job because of the stigma they stick on us.

There are things that both need to be done and can be done easily to reform the benefits system but the course this government has chosen is not one of them and i seriously have my doubts about how successful this will be given how incompetent atos is the fraudsters will probably be quite successful in conning them as most of the people doing the assessments will not be fully medically trained. Will be even more limited in their knowledge of many illness's and this will end up costing the country a lot more then benefit fraud truly does and achieve no real change in the numbers of fraudsters but will put many genuine through months of hell.

Some of those people will not live through it because they have simply had enough and just don't want to carry on living like this i know there are times where i feel like that.

You really do have our sincere sympathies. We feel likewise sometimes when coping with our lad almost becomes too much. We all just have to hope and pray that the powers that be ensure that whatever assessments are going to be undertaken are done so with understanding and humanity. The fact that so much has been done so poorly in the past ought to help ensure a fairer system now. We're trying to be positive about all of this as that's the only way we can cope and I won't be assuming the worst about any of this just yet. Of course I appreciate the experience you and others like you have been through may have given you a very different outlook from ours however.

IIRC I heard IDS saying the other day that he was going to make work pay, how do you do that if you aren't going to increase wages, decrease benefits to make work look more attractive perhaps!? We are all in this together alright, it's just some are more in it than others and it'll always be the genuine, honest claimant that gets hit because put simply they aren't lying, crooked, thieves that know all the answers and can stop themselves being manipulated by shysters.

Years ago I was part of the trial for the welfare to work scheme, it went very well and we helped a lot of people that were capable into work after years of being left to rot with no help or support, trouble is we were expensive to employ, knew what we were doing and had no targets to achieve, if the people that followed us running the scheme and its varients could say the same they'd have my support...

I may be wrong and we haven't been through this personally yet, but I thought the basic idea was to ensure that people could earn more in work before their benefits were affected.

Sadly, it's always the honest who get adversely affected by the actions of the dishonest thought isn't it. All our lives and freedoms are impinged upon in some way because of those who're willing to break the law, lie, cheat, etc. etc.

Well can I say that after it took nearly 2 years to get the DLA for my son who has AUTISM, SEVERE GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT DELAY and possible ADHD. That all the system need a overhaul as when me and my partner first started to claim they just threw it out and we had all the consultant letters and also the psychologists letters to say how much care he needed.
We finally got it and have to say that the biggest bug-bear for me is that when you go to the supermarket and you see people parking in the disabled spots and getting out of a 4x4and running about ( nearly most disabled people would need a stair-lift to get in a 4x4 ) SORRY IT IS MY RANT AT THE BLUE BADGE SCHEME.

I can sympathise with the people who have said that it it hard to cope and I am one of them as there seems to be no-where to turn at certain points and it seems that it will only get worse.

Let us get a disabled PM and lets see what will happen in regards to what is happening now and before.

In a perfect world we would have a system that can weed out the cheaters and still be fair to those who need it, however it seems noone can find a method to do this without a sledgehammer, this will and is ultimately kicking off people in genuine need of help. These people I expect simply sign up for JSA instead (without ability to find work), this will be an escalated problem when JSA gets tightened up some more as the lack of work related activity will come to the forefront.

I think you have to have been part of the system (a claimant or ex claimant) or have personally known/dealt with claimants to understand how wrong the changes are, to people who have had no experience of it, the changes may seem perfectly legit but they not, they are deliberatly designed to kick needy people off as to save money and gain public favour. If it were a choice between ensuring everyone who needs the help gets it easily (it shouldnt be too hard to successfully claim, remember these people are ill), but some slip thru illegally and making more scammers caught but some in need get nothing, then the former is far preferable. The former taxpayers pick up the bill whilst the latter the most vulnerable in soicety pay the price.

The medicals for a start are too short and swift and maybe irregular to give a proper accurate result, as said earlier if someone is seeing a consulatant and especially over a period of many months then that is a strong sign something is wrong with them, consultants treat their time very valuably and will discharge patients who are deemed to not need their help, there is cirumstances where someone wont be seeing a consultant so isnt all black and white but certianly if someone is there is no need to waste cash on medicals and appeals for them.

For what its worth medicals are very expensive to supply, atos origin get billions a year to do services for the government, appeals also cost a lot of money and these new assessments as you may guess appeals have gone through the roof with more than half of claimants winning the appeal. If someone ever wins a court case and compensation over these new rules then the government will then potentially lose big time as there would be a domino affect from that. Atos have been using nurses or even admin staff to carry out some medicals as well.

I also note a change of mental thinking on sickness and benefits.

IB had specific long term needs of claimants in mind when it was brought in (by a tory government I should add), it has a long term rate which pays more than JSA, in addition to age addition payments (further top ups for younger people). JSA is deliberatly paid out at a very low level as a way to discourage people from wanting to stay on it, its not really an amount someone can live off on the long term, those who manage it tend to either be living somewhere else where someone else pays the bills or also have children and get more generous child related benefits. IB of course is something that has to let someone survive on it long term so has always paid out more (on the long term rate). This universal credit will treat both benefits the same, and whether you off work between jobs with short term needs or have a chronic condition that will last for life keeping you out of work, you will get the same financial help, the reason been the government now is pushing out the mindset that there is no one who needs long term sickness benefits, they want to believe there is no such situation and that everyone can work with only short term illnesses. This is a worrying path that scares me.

the genuinely disabled ? there is that many fakers i bet they dont know who is who, but for example, if somebody is in a wheelchair what iswrong with a job at a desk ? or a till ? should that be a free meal ticket for say there 80 year life ? things such as autism downs etc rightly so should be excluded but PHYSICAL disability there is always an option.

Can you think of a job for a person with highly impaired or no vision?

Yes i know that but i was questioning about the certain person that he/she was trying to slate. I know blind people can get cars if they are on the higher rate of mobilty for someone else to drive as you say from APRIL.

Also living in the BARNSLEY area we have a lot of really good disabled schools and support groups in the area I.E GREENACRE SCHOOL and ROBERT OGDEN AUTISTIC SCHOOL, Also the EARLY BIRD AUTISTIC CENTRE ( the base for all the other units around the world ). Also the first that i have mentioned i have friends who work or have gone there.

So a comment like the one before really gets on my wick.:mad::mad:

Don't you consider sight problems a physical disability?

After all you state 'but PHYSICAL disability there is always an option'.

Yet above you say something different.

Just out of interest what was your point / question about a car for?

peanut 22-02-2011 18:38

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

He (PeteLockwood) does have a point in what is classed as a disability and what the impact of that disability has within a workplace.

Just by being in a wheelchair seems to be the stereotypical idea of a disabled person, they will get the benefits, the help and the compassion from others, yet that person might feel fine day to day, no pain etc.

I'm more annoyed that the people that don't fit the 'normal' criteria, eg can walk a bit, can pick up a coin, can reach to turn a tap on etc, are being penalised and classed as able bodied. The illness, the psychological problems or whatever they have doesn't matter, as long as they can do those tasks then you are just a work shy scrounging **** of the earth etc etc. (okay slightly ott).

RizzyKing 22-02-2011 19:02

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

Peter in your opinion then should people who are in pain everyday are very limited physically and cannot walk much qualify as worthy or should they also be made to do work. If you say they should be made to do work find an employer that will be able to accomadate them on the days when they are in more pain then normal unable to walk to the job and may find that seasonally are off more then they are on. You need to understand amongst many genuine claimants it isn't a lack of wanting to work it is finding people that will employ us and be able to work around our disabilities not an easy thing to do when they can hire a fully fit person a lot easier.

what i am trying to say, is just because somebody is in a wheelchair does not mean they are incapable of wiping there arse!

i wear glasses, by your logic i am entitled to disability ?

Really, please quote the post where I said that?

I also note you did not answer my question by the way.

I do find it interesting that you consider the wearing of glasses makes you disabled.

Suffice to say I don't get state money to raise my child. At the time (That I had a child) I wasn't disabled and fully expected not to have to claim anything to look after it. Pardon me for going blind and all that, by your argument I should have not had a child just in case.

He no longer lives with me and both his mother and step dad work.

Well if you are unwilling to discuss anything then that's fine as I didn't expect you to be able to, I'd love to know why you had to put disabled in quotes. Perhaps you think I'm not? By the way I'm not on the dole and thus far have not had anything taken off me.

pete, dilli uses tech aids that magnify the screen and/or read the screen out to him - we use these to help partially sighted/blind students.

Someone has to hire him first - a lot of employers won't spend the money/provide the facilities to support disabled people in the workplace.

When you've done your research into what DLA is FOR then I will answer your question.

The mere fact you just asked shows you don't know what it is and are clearly not really in possession of the facts.

Lack of sight is not a show stopper for using a computer, it just makes it a bit harder.

You have been on this forum since May 2010 and you have failed dismally to see any of Dilli's posts regarding his work station or his visits to the hospital over his sight and one of his most recent post stated that he had been accepted on the Dogs for the blind scheme.

I think that it is brilliant that he continues to lead a productive life and has not let his disability hold him back.

A Disability is not a reason to hold yourself back in the shadows as that is what people expected you to do in the past, think positive and you can be a better person.

Why do people think helping the disabled with benefits is the same as telling them to not work? Its a weird way of thinking that if offering benefits is telling them to not work and removing benefits is helping them, that is a really strange one :)

Unfortenatly there is many people like petelockwood who think if someone can use a computer at home for a few minutes (with unknown aids) they suddenly fit to use one in the workplace, and if they see someone walking out the front door it must mean they fiddling benefits.

Plus the sheer ignorance of not actually conversing with said people in wheelchairs/wearing deaf aids/carrying a white stick or using a guide dog and discovering what their circumstances actually are and what their employment history is.

I know because I talk to these people and some are friends and family.I know that certain conditions such as diabetes can lead to sight and mobility issues as the condition advances.Indeed my sister is registered as being incapacitated due to a heart problem.

Then there are those like my nephew for whom their incapacity is not apparent at first sight because it is a mental one. Yes the one everyone thinks is easy to fake and don't hesitate to say so.My nephew has such low self esteem that he cannot function in any workplace and wants desperately to be part of society on the same terms as the rest of his mentally fit peers.

Re: Goverments Attack on the Disabled?

While it is easy to mock Pete and have a go are we dealing here with complete ignorance of an issue where a little education might be better then buckets of scorn. Pete this week for me so far monday i wake up at 05:30 severe pain right knee i hobble downstairs make myself a coffee and sit for a couple of hours till the pain wears off had it many times before and it's a pain nothing seems to impact not the morphine i take or any of the other meds i am on weird pain in that regard.

I then spend that day tired, snappy towards those around me because i am tired and in pain i spend everyday in some degree of pain until mid afternoon when i can feel the damp in the air increase mainly because i get significantly stiffer and the pain i was already in increases as well evening is not fun for me. Tuesday i didn't sllep too well through the night but maybe caught 3-4 hours of naps between periods of discomfort i wake up stiff and in pain again i can walk a bit better and despite what to most is not a lot of sleep it's ok for me i have gotten used to it so am in a relatively good mood.

Morning is relatively ok pain isn't too bad but then i am not moving around much afternoon it starts to rain stiffness increases pain increases starting to get uncomfortable (when i say uncomfortable Pete i mean by my standards which is years of having high degree's of pain that i have now by and large gotten used too not the usual definition) and movement even in small amounts is now pain inducing on a nasty scale.

I woke up this morning after little sleep and my right arm hurts like hell my hips feel like they are on fire and i have a headache more like a migraine then anything i can describe which probably means my spine has stretched and my spinal cord is straining that will die down more or less in a few hours but till then i am not a happy person or a person anyone wants to be round.

Now here's the thing Pete on my best day i can walk maybe 50 metres before i start feeling severe pain which increases the further i go, where i live i am approx 325 metres from the town centre and i sometimes will walk with my wife to get out of the house and pay for it for the next three to four days in terms of not being able to walk much at all. Nearest industrial area with a decent chance of a job to me is approx 550 metres away so i am pretty sure i can make it there and back but for only one day a week and if weather is bad or i am having a bad day being honest and much as i hate it i don't think i could even make it there before the pain was too much.

It isn't a lack of will to work it is the fact i am disabled my condition is incurable and will only get worse as i get older i am in employment terms unreliable and easy as that is to type it is still extremely hard for me personally to accept that. I am ex force's as well before i was injured and my condition was allowed to take hold i used to walk 15-20 miles a day for fun i loved walking but not anymore.

My case is more widespread then i think you realise and affects many many people most of whom each and everyday in casual encounters with strangers will bust a gut to hide the true extent of how bad life can be only those closest to them truly know. It's an act we learn to put on to try and retain some pride and dignity and sometimes the act becomes so ingrained even when we meet people like the wonderful moron's from atos we don't let the act slip as we should.

I don't actually blame you for your attitude Pete being honest it's the attitude a whole lot of powerful people want more and more in this country to have and you may well be part of a much larger group in the UK then some on here realise. What is really ironic of course is that in having the attitude you have to people like me and dili (who i do not know well on this forum but am aware of his condition and what he has done to make the best of it and have a lot of respect for him) you are the cause of the problem your complaining about because if you were to meet me in a job interview you would put that attitude onto me and apply it to me and not employ me.

Thats what some want they want a scapegoat too vulnerable to be able to oppose them but easy enough to lay all the blame for society's ills and the only thing stopping that happening is that by and large we in the UK are fair and we are tolerent and believe that we should look after those who for whatever reason beyond their control are unable to fully look after themselves that is a priceless attitude and it's a fantastic one that we shouldn't let anyone take from us.

Sorry for the long post folks but lets try this approach and see how we go :).

Rizzy, very informative post - thanks for that.

btw, we weren't mocking pete's ignorance, more his attitude (which is informed by his ignorance) - ignorance is nothing to be ashamed of, but it's not something to be proud of, either.

I am with Hugh on this as ignorance of how disability can affect people is a sorry state of affairs in this day and age.

There is also the fact that some people hug their ignorance to themselves and delight in it, when to actually find out the truth is actually a very easy step to take BUT they prefer the notions and opinions they have already formed about another group of people and so just don't bother.

In other words before you place your opinions in a public forum as fact, do some research first. If you don't then you are in danger of being labelled ignorant.

And like the government assessors their opinions are as crude and ill informed.
