No more cheap insurance, ladies.

Quote:

young women now facing paying up to £1,000 a year extra for car insurance, like men of the same age.

The news is expected to follow a ruling by European judges next month that insurance companies cannot discriminate between customers on gender.
Quote:

The European Court of Justice in Strasbourg is expected to rule that giving young women cheaper deals is unlawful. Experts say that young women's premiums could almost double as a result, while young men's could drop slightly.
Isn't life getting expensive?

Unfortunately this works both ways. Take pensions. Blokes have done quite well as our life expectancy is shorter so we get a greater monthly payout from our pot than the ladies would. Now we would loose that.

Re: No more cheap insurance, ladies.

Don't men pay higher life insurance premiums than women due to their shorter life expectancy? Is this now going to be illegal? If it is, what's the betting both sexes will wind up paying more?

Beyond comedy. Typical Europe really :)

We get to pay in taxes for their hair brained regulation, then again to pay the extra costs their regulation causes.

V strange - young women are statistically less likely to have an accident or be charged with a driving offence; since insurance is usually based on actuarial evidence, changing this seems counter-intuitive.

About damn time too. Why should men be penalised for some half brained chavs.

All first time drivers should be treated as equal. As you go along the road, the more NCB's you build up the more discount you should earn!

Maggy 17-02-2011 19:33

Re: No more cheap insurance, ladies.

It will teach those who have manked about it for ages as a lot of men were putting their insurance in their wives name or in the case of youngsters in their mother's name. Now in the name of equality everyone gets penalised.

Well done..

That's exactly why women get cheaper car insurance ,insurance is based on risk and probability not gender so they could still be able to get away with giving cheaper insurance .Having said that and knowing how greedy some insurance companies are they will be lapping this up as not only do people have to have insurance by law ,companies won't have to take risk into concideration .Complete money spinner for the insurance companies

But young men have more accidents - why should they be treated equally when they are more at fault?

Once both sexes are over 25, the costs tend to be the same (well, in my experience they do), unless, of course, there is a history of claims/accidents.

Do they? Can you provide me with any credible links to backup your comment?

I've being driving over 5yrs now, not one accident (touch wood) yet a lady down the road from me, much younger, new driver, able to drive a newer car than me, pays half what I pay. Surely, you see where I am coming from?

I'm being penalised for someone else's mistake!

If ALL 1st time drivers were charged with zero history, it would be much fairer!

If the statistics prove that young women are less likely to be involved in a motor accident than young men which they apparently do, then its common sense that their premiums are going to be lower, it has nothing to do with equal rights or favouring women over men the insurance companies have obviously seen that young men are a higher risk than young women...simples really.:)

Of course there is the Saudi way of solving this problem.;)

I think insurance should be based on individual basis, rather than stereotyping.

and she still gets cheap insurance.

Well on April the 18th I will have been driving for 23 years, and pay more now than I did when I first started driving.

We need to stop discriminating against single people without kids.

What is even more anoying is that back in November a car hit my stationary car, when my quote was due I shopped around, and was angry to find that I have to pay £40 more for being a victim, and I did shop around.

Today we are getting shafted by insureance companies as they know they have got us by the short and curlies, and if we don't pay we get a criminal record.

Statistics may show women are less likely to have accidents but all one has to do especially here in Swansea is look out on the roads and girls can be just as bad as boys.

Before they did the road changes in Swansea for the bendy busses the Kingsway in Swansea was nutorious for racers as it was just a long stretch of road both directions with a roundabout at both ends so they would go up and down. Gangs of Girls in cars were just as likely to congregate in the bus stops along this road on Friday and Saturday nights to race up and down.

See I knew there would be one person who would decry the national stats with a personalised view from their window without a link to prove their case.

There maybe girls who race in this manner but they are still a tiny proportion of the entire female driving population and I bet there are far more 18-25 year old males involved in this activity as a comparison.

Actually your premiums go up if you have young children - as they are considered to be a distraction with their noise, and more likely to cause an accident.

What if a black man is more likely than a white man to have an accident? Can we charge him more? what about charging a white woman more than an asian woman?
I think there would be an outcry if we did this and I really dont see the difference between descriminating over race, gender or social standing.
Equality cuts both ways.
Typical that the insurance companies will react to this by just increasing everyones premiums but i would argue that I have paid the higher premiums since i could drive so they still wont be paying as much as i have.

The only important statistic for car insurance is the odds of a driver having an accident. And not where said driver keeps their dangly bits. I really don't see how a car insurance company can count one irrelevant piece of data like gender of a driver and then not count an other equally irrelevant one like drivers race. The reason they don't count the racial data is because if they did charge someone differently based on that they would be racist or racially discriminating. How is that any different based on gender?

EDIT: And just to answer your question directly, I think they should either count them all or none of them. Because their results are equally skewed by being selective. Though sexuality would be a difficult and rather pointless one to add to that list :)

Irrelevant. I notice you snipped and ignored the rest of my post. How is gender any more relevant than race?

Hugh 18-02-2011 19:00

Re: No more cheap insurance, ladies.

It's irrelevant that young women have less accidents than young men, which lessens the risk of payout, therefore their payment for the insurance reflect this - how can it be irrelevant?

I have window locks, approved locks on the doors, and an alarm - this lessens the risk of a burglary compared to a house without these things, so the likelyhood of being burgled is less, so I pay lower premiums - or should I pay the same as someone who has a higher risk of burglary?

You appear to be ignoring the fact that most insurance premiums are based on actuarial statistics, which evaluate (to a reasonably high level of accuracy) the likelyhood of an incident - why should someone who is less likely to have an incident subsidise those who do?

race has nothing to do with it (although i daresay that there will statistics somewhere)Insurance companies could go on forever proving that Chinese women over 30 and are left handed are safer drivers than scottish men under 50 with a ginger beard ,all they can realistically do is use data regarding age and sex regardless of race

You twisted my words to try and make them say the opposite of the point you know I was trying to make, and the point you made was irrelevant.
Race wouldn't complicate it anymore than it is now, yet that's overlooked because it would be classed as discrimination. Yet somehow sex discrimination is ignored or should I say was ignored.

And Hugh, the things you list for home insurance are all things you can change, just as parking on a driveway, installing an alarm and immobiliser would for a car. Can you change your gender? Yes, lol. But should you have to to get cheaper car insurance? :D (actually do transgenders get cheaper or more expensive car insurance? because they shouldn't).
Would you agree to paying more for your home insurance because of your gender?
Do you really think this would even still be around now if men had cheaper premiums? The activist groups would have had that practice shut down years ago.
While we're at it lets increase male wages above female again as cost of living is clearly higher for us.
And I'm not ignoring the fact that most insurance premiums are based on statistics, quite the opposite. What I am arguing about is that they conveniently ignore statistics when it suits them. Which in my opinion leaves your point about accuracy in question.

Also I feel I should point out that it is measured based on in car fatalities rather than just drivers. So all this gender argument really proves is that there are more men travelling in cars.

On an interesting side note, My insurance came out only £5 more than my partners this year. Though hers was half mine just 2 years ago.

Hugh 18-02-2011 21:37

Re: No more cheap insurance, ladies.

Males under 25 don't get higher insurance because they are male - they get higher insurance because they have more accidents.....

And 2 years ago, did you both have a clean driving licence and equal no claims bonus?

Also, looking at your age, 2 years ago, you would have been under 25, which is the upper boundary of the high risk group for males, which explains why it has dropped (unless you are stating that her's has increased to match yours).

Why is the male cost of living higher than that for women? There appear to be some straw men being built around here.....

Damien 18-02-2011 21:48

Re: No more cheap insurance, ladies.

I don't see the problem with women playing less, if they statistically make fewer and smaller claims then it's logically less risky to insure them and do so with smaller premiums. All this ruling will do to pass the savings onto the insurance company rather than the driver.

Yes but the assumption is because I am male I WILL have more accidents. Ergo higher insurance because I am male. Not had one yet, although I do regret typing that as you know I will on the way to work tomorrow now.

She is 9 days older than me and we have been on the road for roughly the same amount of time (She has had her licence about 2 months longer than me). And clean licences with equal no claims. We where also going for renewal at the same time on the same car (seeing who was cheaper since we use it equally).
And to be a little pedantic I was over 25, well 25 and 5 months to be exact. Which counts ;)

But it's not an assumption - males (especially those under 25) do have more accidents (over five times), and the insurance rates reflect that - I am unclear why you find that fact so hard to accept.

Insurance premiums to change after ECJ gender ruling

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12606610
Quote:

Insurers cannot charge different premiums to men and women because of their gender, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled.
Quote:

The ECJ decision will also affect the cost of buying an annuity - an annual pension - as women live for longer than men and so receive a smaller annual pension for the same pot of money.
The insurance industry has warned that the change will lead to men receiving a smaller annuity income than they do now when their benefits are brought into line with those for women.
Equality may work in both directions but it doesn't always work out how we would like.

Equality may work in both directions but it doesn't always work out how we would like.

Isn't that part of the reason for equality to be legislated for?

IIRC the much misquoted driving report found that men had more and bigger accidents merely because of the type of driving that they did(ie for longer periods and distances). Men were found to lose concentration after driving for long periods whereas women just didn't have the full ability to drive(eg park) in the first place.

If a particular person(female or male) is accident free then that will be already reflected in any no claims bonus.

:banghead:

It's blatantly obvious to anyone with a hint of common sense men, especially young ones are at fault for the more expensive and destructive crashes.

Still just another reason to ignore all the decisions coming from Europe.

IIRC the much misquoted driving report found that men had more and bigger accidents merely because of the type of driving that they did(ie for longer periods and distances). Men were found to lose concentration after driving for long periods whereas women just didn't have the full ability to drive(eg park) in the first place.

The reasons why men have more and bigger accidents is irrelevant. The fact is, they have more and bigger accidents. They are a bigger insurance risk and an insurer ought to be able to factor that in to any premium.

If a woman who drives for long times and distances will be as big a risk as a man, then shouldn't she pay bigger premiums and shouldn't a man who only drives short distances pay lower premiums. A past record of actual accidents is already factored into the premiums somebody pays.

Don't they factor in driving distances by asking for the annual mileage?

I believe so.

I think because of this 'ruling' insurance is no longer based on risk.
it was actually discrimination where if you're a bad driver you get charged more. it needed discrimination for it to be able to work properly.

but discrimination is bad so we got rid of it.

I'm sure they'll come up with something to sort it out.

After they've sorted out the 'age discrimination' part of it.

I'm now waiting for the person in a run down crime ridden housing estate with ten times vehicle theft of anywhere else to take the "I pay more because I'm poor" argument to the ECHR

Or people on benefits should get cheap car insurance anyway?

They do but it means squat.

When I was made redundant back in 2005 my insurance went up as I was out of work and using my car less:mad:, when I got a job and did 10k a year my insurance went up:mad:, when I was made redundant again in 2009 my insurance went up:mad:.

The last accident I had that I was to blame was back in 1991, since then I had no accidents, speeding tickets, parking fines, stopped by police etc.

Lastly when my stationary vehicle was hit (2010), my insurance went up (£40)

I'm sure they pluck a number out of the air, and times it by another.

I fed up of being discriminated. Perhaps this will now balance out the good drivers from the bad.

Re: No more cheap insurance, ladies.

I have just renewed my car insurance and the premiums this year have sky rocketed. The broker I have used for years could do no better than a 33% rise on last year. Needless to say I have a different broker now but the increase is still 20%.

The industry has taken a quantum shift from risk based on individuals. location etc. to a collective risk whereby everyone who pays for legality accepts the losses encountered by fraud and law breakers.

Personal injury claims both real and fraudulently claimed are partly to blame with fraud estimated as being a cost of £40 per premium to every legitimate purchaser. Uninsured drivers and those with insurance on impossible to claim from foreign insurance are reckoned to be responsible for another £30.

Per individual there is an increase of £70 per head to cover mainly criminal activity with even more added because the industry claims low or no profitability.

The real discrimination is against law abiding individuals whether male or female and IMO the trend towards low premiums is over. This female choice is nothing more than part of a trend which will see premiums heading back to historic higher levels to pay for poor law enforcement and give big profits back to insurers.

All of the arguments as to the reality of female drivers being a lower risk which although true is irrelevant when all payers are seen as a collective pool of income irrespective of individual circumstances.

You mean when they can't discriminate against someone taking out life insurance at 55+ without having to pay through the nose in premiums.

This ruling could bring down the whole insurance structure as we know it.. Once they say no to one criteria then they have to say no to the rest..

Age, location, experience, type of car owned, previous accident, points are all now fair game to anyone willing to take it to the ECHR

Well with car insurance there's 'sex' discrimination where if you were a woman you get cheaper insurance.

there's also 'age' discrimination where if you're young you usually pay more.

this ruling is based on 'sex' discrimination. so the next thing would be to do away with all discrimination.

But if a young person takes out life insurance he/she can get it at the lowest premium possible.

No we're discussing gender being denied as a reason for different premiums and the implications that will have for insurance as a whole.

Re: No more cheap insurance, ladies.

Something to think about

Because I too have experienced massive upward shifts in policy costs (and I have a gazzilion years of no claims, I'm 45, not in a 'risky' profession, low crime postcode, own drive etc etc)

I'm failing to understand why:
Theres more cars on the roads (more premiums paid)
The roads are safer than ever (statisticly less accidents, 'safety cameras' etc etc
ANPR cameras monitor all traffic and it's relatively easy to see who's not got tax, insurance etc.

In conclusion, more cars, more premiums paid, less pay outs.

So why the heck is my (and everyone elses premiums going up???

And while I'm on the subject, what's with this persvasive 'creep' of privacy invasion.
Now all the policies say 'do you have a criminal record' no, not traffic violations which is a fair question, but *any* criminal offence.

I'm a believer in that; If a product or service is relevant to that kind of vetting, that's fair enough. e.g. you wouldn't want a paedophile working in a school say. I fail to see why an insurance company needs to know if you have a criminal record or not beyond traffic violations. (I don't incidently)

Actually, I wish there was a regulator for insurances like the Off's for other industries. OffInsure or something, because I believe these people are just blatently profiteering. Unless anyone has any evidence to disprove that.

More cars, more crashes.

That and the cost per crash goes up as everyone involved in a bump seems to have 'whiplash' which mysteriously only manifests itself after they get home and see a no-win, no-fee ambulance chaser advert on TV.

Starting a new thread is not the option you should be considering

They probably are but I would think a fatal crash is cheaper for the insurance company to deal with than a non-fatal, serious injury crash.

Taf 01-03-2011 11:06

Re: No more cheap insurance, ladies.

More people survive crashes these days, maybe because modern cars crumple so easily to take the shock.

People saved, cars written off... still a big bill for the insurers.

Does the ECJ realise that they have created discrimination with this ruling .It also covers pension annuities so because of this ruling men will have to have more money in the pension pot to get the same as women out because womens life expectancy is longer

And young drivers cannot be charged more because they are young.

Being cynical I'd expect simply that female drivers will now pay the same as men, and no one will benefit. I suppose its *just* possible that mens may come down slightly, I'll bet dollars to doughnuts though, that the Insurers will benefit from more money coming in regardless.

I think at the moment the ruling only applies to gender discrimination but i would suspect that age and disability will follow suit as insurance companies ask the EU commision to clarify the descision

Quote:

Ashley Prebble, insurance partner, Norton Rose: “There is going to be uncertainty in the insurance market for some time as a result of this decision. It is likely that the decision will require the European Commission to clarify the position with regards to other potential areas of discrimination, particularly age and disability. This might be done through a Protocol setting out exactly what insurers will be able to do in terms of differentiating the risks posed by different categories of policyholders”.

Without a doubt ,no way will the insurance companies lower mens premiums down to womens levels ,indeed the AA have said that they expect womens premiums for under 30's to rise by 25-30% ,i seriously doubt that the insurance companies will set the rates at a mid point between the 2 levels

This is fantastic.....I have been worried whether insurance companies were going to have an excuse to charge people more money, and the EU hands it to them!

So glad they are working in all our interests!

We are both over 65 and the my insurance premium for our car is slightly lower than what my wife would pay for the same car. What we used to do now that we don't have a car each is insure this one in my wifes name for 2 years and then in my name for 2 years, this means we keep our current no claims bonus should we ever get another vehicle.

Jeez why be surprised that politicians tell lies.
They say and promise what ever it takes to get elected.

After that they forget any promises until the next election because they had no opportunity to carry out said promises because they had to deal with the mess the last government left first and now there is no time left to carry out the promises they made during the election..;)
