State multiculturalism has "failed", says Cameron

David Cameron has criticised "state multiculturalism" in his first speech on radicalisation and the causes of terrorism as prime minister.

Mr Cameron suggested there would be greater scrutiny of some Muslim groups that get public money but do little to tackle extremism.

Ministers should refuse to share platforms or engage with such groups, which should be denied access to public funds and barred from spreading their message in universities and prisons, he argued.

At a security conference in Germany, he argued the UK needed a stronger national identity to prevent people turning to all kinds of extremism.
Now this makes much more sense. If we felt we had a strong united identity that everyone can sign up to and be part of I think it might work to unite all groups together. But does he mean the UK or does he mean England?:erm:

This statement from the muslim council of britain i find perplexing .The muslim community is part of the problem just as much as part of the solution .

To make this work though the muslim community ,or more accurately , sections of it must stop isolating themselves from the rest of the country

Well I believe that was in part what he was saying.

Quote:

"Let's properly judge these organisations: Do they believe in universal human rights - including for women and people of other faiths? Do they believe in equality of all before the law? Do they believe in democracy and the right of people to elect their own government? Do they encourage integration or separatism?

Given the way these topics usually go on this forum, I think a slightly more accurate thread title is a good idea. I have altered it.

quite ,but how is he going to acomplish this without bringing the wrath of these groups down on him ,he needs groups like the MCB to get firmly behind him and speak out publicly against such groups but unfortunately i think that the MCB is one of the groups that cameron needs to look at

Until we hear of groups of radical Sikhs, or extreme Buddhists etc detonating themselves on tube trains one would venture to suggest that the Islamic community is rather more than just "part of the problem".

You appeared to have accidently missed the part of the article where David Cameron states "Islam is not the problem - extremism is the problem".

What about the 10 terrorist incidents* that occurred on UK soil last year? - I haven't seen anyone on this forum stating that "the Christian community is rather more than "part of the problem".

*January 8 Randalstown, Northern Ireland
June 17 Aughnacloy, Northern Ireland
June 22 Keady, Northern Ireland
July 10 Belleeks, Northern Ireland
August 3 Derry, Northern Ireland
August 4 Bangor, Northern Ireland
August 10 Cookstown, Northern Ireland
August 14 Lurgan, Northern Ireland

He is, IMHO, absolutely spot on. Without some kind of identity binding us together we are no longer a nation and no-one can feel that they belong to a piece of land.

Thorny subject though and I've no doubt all kinds of people previously used to being deferred to will crawl out of the woodwork to complain about it.

State multiculturalism has indeed been a disaster. An absolute unmitigated disaster.

Shored up the Labour vote quite nicely though, so mission accomplished.

The Northern Ireland problems have long since moved in from being down to Christianity. It's more about tribalism these days.

Fury as Labour ‘smears’ David Cameron after he attacks multiculturalism

Mr Khan, the Shadow Justice Secretary, infuriated Downing Street by claiming that Mr Cameron was ‘writing propaganda for the English Defence League’. The EDL is an anti-Islamist street protest movement that numbers BNP supporters among its members.

No surprise that the architects of the policy sanctimoniously defend it and its fallout.

Even less of a surprise that someone as corrupt and unfit for office as Khan would make comments like that, if that was a direct quote.

http://order-order.com/2011/02/05/the-wrath-of-khan/

What he said - accusing people making that kind of comment as writing extremist propaganda puts into very clear focus how extreme the views are in the other direction. Socially and politically a remarkably stupid move, but just what Ed deserves for appointing an unsuitable sycophant of his to such an office.

I think the timing couldn't have been better assuming of course that his intention was to release the speech on the day of a big EDL march ,lets not forget that groups like the BNP and EDL are also extreme groups of the same ilk as some islamist extremists ,would the same criticism have been levelled at him if he had said the same thing at the time of the "poppy burning" episode last year .

Having just read the article there is one thing that is clear ,our friend MR Griffin has completely mis-understood Camerons meaning behind the speech .He says that cameron has declared war on multiculturism ...no he hasn't ,he has critisised labours way of introducing immigrants into this country and funding every group under the sun.
Griffin seems to be under the illusion that Cameron is supporting the bnps' views on immigration and multiculturism, legitimising what the bnp have been saying for 30 years ,i.e shut the doors and ship them home,he is not ,he is calling for a more a natural multiculturism ,the mixing of cultures more freely instead of all living together on a council estate .

One thing that Griffin has got right is that it is pointless making speeches like that without following through with action ,and that action must be well thought out not knee jerk reactions which was labours trade mark

1) Maybe, should be considered, carefully.
2) No - deal with the Imams themselves, don't punish the worshippers.
3) Not until she does something genuinely worth being fired over. Shouldn't take her too long based on past.

I doubt he's misunderstood anything, probably just hopes that other people will misunderstand it and is trying to hijack the speech for his own purposes.

We'll see if action genuinely does follow the words.

I agree with you ,as leaders if you will, the Imams are the ones with influence and sometimes are responsible for extremism ,exactly the same as other religions .After all we aren't about to shut down catholic churches because a few bishops are child abusers

Re: State multiculturalism has "failed", says Cameron

Common sense at last.

I still have high hopes for Cameron.

Multiculturalism is a nonsense.

Let's not confuse it with Multiracialism, we can all live very happily in a Multiracial country and for the most part we do.

But Multiculturalism doesn't work. I like being British and I like our freedoms and values. The best thing about the British is that we embrace the parts of other cultures that we like - but we shouldn't have to "put up with" or even "respect" parts of other cultures that we do not agree with or does not fit with our way of life.

IMO One of the problem is numbers. Where the number of an incoming 'type'(race, country, religion etc) are few in an area, they mix well with the residents. It's when there is a large enough number of them(critical mass), they separate into their own groups, open their community centres, rather than attend the community centre which is for everyone.

Maggy 08-02-2011 13:37

Re: State multiculturalism has "failed", says Cameron

I still don't know if he means is a part of the UK or as part of England.

After all the Scots,Welsh and Irish all pretty much seem to have a clear sense of identity(i.e. not English) but us English really do seem to have some confusion as to what being English really means or just what our cultural heritage is anyway.

techguyone 08-02-2011 15:14

Re: State multiculturalism has "failed", says Cameron

This may be part of the problem with identity, compare the two statements:

I'm English & I happen to be Christian

I'm Muslim...

------------

Whilst people regard their identity to be solely their religion, you'll never get past that to a sense of identity, because to them, that IS their identity, anything else is secondary.

How do I know what I'm saying?

I've worked alongside these people for a long time (20 years) and in my experience, over that length of time, even really quite moderate Muslims have taken a much harder line for their religion now.

I won't even mention the 'israeli' word as that seems to transform every single Muslim I've met into a foaming at the mouth frenzy if you mention it.

no agenda, just what I've observed. I can't say I know what the solution is, except whatever we've been doing as a nation for the last 20+ years, obviously isn't it.

Hugh 08-02-2011 16:22

Re: State multiculturalism has "failed", says Cameron

Depends on the question you ask?

If you asked someone their nationality, I doubt they would answer Christian/Muslim.

If you ask their religion, I also doubt they would answer "English & Christian".

This is true I think, BNP have a fair bit of support in my city, which widened my eyes, as my city has a large ethnic minority population, I then checked birmingham and same pattern there, I think with both cities having the same pattern it is more than a coincidence.

I then seen a show on channel 5 where they go after cowboy builders and a asian family from leicester was on it, the story was they trusted the builder based on him been asian as they thought asians wouldnt do that kind of thing to each other That to me seemed off and wrong.

On this note, someone i know was trying to move his car and an Asian was blocking his way, so an argument broke out but the other Asian (the one blocking) said 'we're the same, lets not argue, but if you were white I'd have knocked you out' Not surprising in the least but why do Muslims treat their own with respect ( to a degree ) but others not!?
