Andy Gray sacked by Sky

Quote:

Sky Sports said it had sacked Gray "in response to new evidence of unacceptable and offensive behaviour".
Sky's statement continued: "The new evidence, relating to an off-air incident that took place in December, 2010, came to light after Andy Gray had already been subjected to disciplinary action for his comments of 22 January, 2011."

If this stupidity carries on we may as well start lobotomising the newborn, or why not sterilise everyone and have done with it? The world would be a better place without us.

Is there really more to life than this silly immature pettiness. It's all so pointless.

They had a discussion on London LBC the other day, the discussion was entitled "Have you got an Andy Gray in your office?" The idea was to hear about sexism in the office.

One caller phoned up and said, "Well, if you mean do I have a professional footballer, Legend, millionaire, and seasoned charity worker, then no I don't have one of those in my office."

How would CF'ers feel if he had made those comments ("Can you tuck this down here for me?") to your sister/wife/daughter?

Would it still be "banter" then?

My sister/wife/daughter would have said a funny put down, for example, told him to stick it up his ass!

And I would have laughed when told about it - and nothing more would have become of it because it's all OTT.

More importantly, I haven't seen a newspaper this week, have the sun asked Peta, 23 from Essex, her opinion on this yet?

Slightly more difficult if they the man has some sort of seniority though. Anyway, as mentioned, if you were to do that at a lot of companies you would probably find yourself in trouble. You can't go around making sexual remarks/gestures directed towards co-workers.

Or is this why the massive growth in the online dating sites...because no one is allowed to talk to each other anymore?

Well, he is getting a bit past his best.

They use a different excuse for getting rid of female newsreaders/presenters at the BBC when it happens to them....

But, then again, wasn't he suing the NotW over phone tapping or something? :erm:

This is not about asking someone out who happens to be a co-worker, this is about sexual behaviour towards a co-worker in the office. Your point about dating sites is utterly irrelevant as well.

What he did in the wolves video was fine, when he did in the video with the female news reporter was out of line.

Someone clearly from inside sky wanted him out, all the leaked videos show that, however regardless what he did was out of line to the female reporter.

A guy in his 50s acting like a teenager.

"PC gone mad" ...not necessarily it all depends on the meaning behind the words ,were they meant as a "can you tuck it down my trousers because your a woman and that's all your good for" sort of thing or was it part of a good natured bit of banter between gray and the woman that has been taken out of context .This is the problem with having all encompassing rules to govern things of this nature getting the context right is very hard ,past history has to be looked at and most importantly only the person who the comments were directed at should be allowed to complain

I agree wholeheartedly Hugh, its all very well posters making comments like "my daughters got a sense of humour" or "I'd have smacked him one", its easy to see this as just one distasteful comment instead of what appears to be a culture of crude boorish behavior by Keys and Gray.
If on the other hand some folks wouldn't have a problem with their daughter, sister or wife being subjected to this type of behaviour in the modern workplace then to me that beggars belief, there is a world of difference between a bit of harmless banter and what these two bullies have been doing.
Then again I suppose in some circles the likes of Jim Davidson and Bernard Mannings "humour" is considered hilarious.

So people get asked out at work without anyone testing the water or acting in a flirtatious manner at all?

It is completely relevant. People are arguing that there should be no sexual behaviour at work at all - so asking someone out is sexual behaviour - flirting is sexual behaviour - and this is human nature - otherwise how do people get together?

There is asking people out, then there is sexual harassment or making people feel uncomfortable. I do not believe that you are really unclear into the differences, that you cannot distinguish between asking someone/testing the water and sexual gestures directed at members of the oppersite sex while your in the workplace.

Believe it or not people manage to get together without making crude gestures at their colleagues.

Did this woman feel uncomfortable then? I must have missed the interview with her condemning this guy? Watching the film of the incident - she was laughing!

Are innuendos a sackable offence now then? Have people really had a humour bypass? It's not like the guy pulled down his trousers and flashed it at her is it? How come there is not more of a recording...for all you know she said she would put it there before he said it?

No she wasn't. It doesn't show her face until it cuts to her checking her own mic looking at some production staff.

So your saying that it's simply harmless innuendo until you start exposing yourself to people? That's where the 'line' is drawn? Anything else is a humor bypass? I don't know know where there is more of a recording but it clearly shows no retort.

That is my point "where is the line drawn"? It seems to me that the line is drawn before considering the fact we are sexual beings. I bet you have never worked in a sales office! You would be surprised what the women say to blokes in there!

This is slowly becoming an episode of The Office.

I don't know what happens in sales office but I do know, that despite humans being 'sexual beings', there is an expected level of professionalism in most workplaces. I also know there are sexual harassment laws. Most people do know where the draw the line to be honest.

My take on it is this. If it was banter down the pub then yeah fine - it's banter.

The difference being messrs Gray and Keys were in the workplace. Regardless of whether they were 'broadcasting' or not it doesn't matter. They were in the workplace and that sort of talk is not productive in a professional environemnt.

I know damn well if I said some of the things they said in my workplace I would be up in front of the HR department getting severe warnings. Maybe not sacked but the difference between me and them is the pay gulf. They are in a privileged position and they know it. They need to be extra careful of what they say and where.

No sympathy for either of them.

And not far from this workplace - the footballers. The double standards of "the beautiful game". Watch 22 men gob and spit, shout and swear at the ref and each other, fake fouls, try to con the ref on every decision even obvious ones (everyones hand goes up for every throw in!), lies, deceipt.........and lets face it, this IS being passed on to todays kids - and society is showing the same "footballer" mentatlity on the streets and in schools.

But you say one crude remark and you are the devils brood!

I agree. From a big follower of football I really have very little interest in it now for a number of reasons, not least what you said above.

But 'one crude remark' and Andy Gray was formally warned. A second and third crude remark then came to light and it was no longer a single instance - I really don't think Sky had any option (even if it was a desire of theirs to find an excuse for a sacking already). Like all organisations they have rules and they can't seem to bend these rules regardless of who for.
